Hand and Power Tool Safety

Hand and power tools are a common part of our everyday lives and are present in nearly every industry. These tools help us to easily perform tasks that otherwise would be difficult or impossible. However, these simple tools can be hazardous and have the potential for causing severe injuries when used or maintained improperly. Special attention toward hand and power tool safety is necessary in order to reduce or eliminate these hazards.

Hand and power tool hazards are addressed in specific standards for the general industry, shipyard employment, marine terminals, longshoring, and the construction industry.

OSHA Standards

This section highlights OSHA standards, directives (instructions for compliance officers), and standard interpretations (official letters of interpretation of the standards) related to hand and power tools in the workplace.

Note: Twenty-five states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands have OSHA-approved State Plans and have adopted their own standards and enforcement policies. For the most part, these States adopt standards that are identical to Federal OSHA. However, some States have adopted different standards applicable to this topic or may have different enforcement policies.

    For the Christmas season in 2005 I was bouncing around Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan. The Sailors I was responsible for worked hard unloading and reloading ships, acting as Customs Inspectors and training Iraqi and Afghani forces. When the holidays approached, they looked forward to some well-deserved downtime.

    Alas, it was not to be.

    When the holidays come, so do FOGOs – Flag Officers (Admirals) and General Officers (Generals). Instead of a day to catch up on some shuteye, read a book, relax or whatever, the Sailors (as well as their Army, Marine, Air Force and Coast Guard compatriots) had to put on a clean, pressed uniform and spend half a day at the DFAC (Dining Facility) while a FOGO they’d never met carved the turkey or dished up mashed potatoes on the food line and then sat and “chatted” with the service members.

    All well-intentioned, but not exactly a bull’s-eye.

    This Christmas, may I suggest that whatever you’re planning on doing to entertain or support others, please – keep your audience in mind. If you give them what they want, it’s so much better than if you give them what you want to give.

    Just a thought.

    We recently saw Tom Cruise explore an eradicated Earth in the cool trailer for ‘Oblivion’, the Star Trek lads face bitter turmoil on their home world, and now from hit and miss director M. Night Shyamalan, comes another new sci-fi adventure film called, ‘After Earth’.

    The film stars father and son duo, Will Smith and Jaden Smith, and sees them crash land on a dangerous desolate world, that turns out to be the once deserted planet, Earth.

    The trailer gives us a glimpse of some pretty cool special effects and visuals, along an interesting scene of big alien looking space-crafts blasting the crap out of some fleeing humans.

    Here’s the synopsis, followed by the trailer:

    One thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

    “I saw that you were reflecting earlier on the effects of indoctrination when it is practiced on a grand scale.”
     “I fear that when we are deprived of freedom of thought, it will be impossible to maintain a critical mind.” Nathan answered.
    “And, according to you, what are the consequences?” Songo asked.
    Nathan recognized his father’s style of questioning in the way Songo was posing the questions. This approach had permitted him to greatly develop his thinking and discover great truths. It also told him that what Songo wanted him to understand was of great importance. He took his time to reflect on his answer.
    “The consequences are that people will no longer be able to think for themselves as to what is good for them. They will behave and live in the way that is expected of them by others, and they will justify this attitude by studied arguments.”
    “Nathan,” Songo said in a grave tone, “What you are affirming is the basis for the lack of harmony on earth!”
    There was a moment of silence, than Songo said softly:
    “What feeling does that bring out in you, Nathan?”
    “A feeling of injustice towards the victims of these charlatans, and the victims they will in turn make.”
    “Nothing else?” Songo asked.
    “What I always feel in cases of injustice; the desire to put an end to it!” Nathan stated firmly.
    Songo put his hand on Nathan’s arm and spoke again in a grave tone, cue that he was about to say something very personal.
    “When you go against the main current of acceptable opinions, you must always arm yourself with courage. Courage consists of resistance, hope and unlimited faith in the success of your undertakings.” 
     

    Example, if you listen to political speeches, how some individuals articulate their words, emphasizing some, using pauses at particular moments…using different pitches for certain words… what do you think they are doing?  Just thoughts to ponder…. It most certainly takes courage to stand up for the truth, because most don’t see it–truth– and will try to ridicule you or your ideas. But courage is an amazing thing; once you give in to it, a tremendous strength develops, and with courage and strength for what’s right, Love and Truth always prevail…  Grace
