To start I want to explain that I use this software for printing backpacking maps. After doing some research I had narrowed my selection to TOPO 4.0 and Maptech Terrain Navigator because of the graphic detail, but decided to stick with TOPO since I already had an older version of the Utah maps. I own the 3.43 version of the Utah maps and recently purchased the 4.2 version of Wyoming, and until National Geographic released a 4.50 patch, I had some difficulty running this program in Windows Vista. Those issues seem to be resolved with this patch. To start, I installed the Wyoming 4.2 version of TOPO, then downloaded and ran the 4.50 patch from the National Geographic website, after which I installed the Wyoming map disks to my hard drive. Detailed instructions for installing older versions of TOPO are on the National geographic website, and I had no trouble installing my older Utah maps by following these instructions. I have a Garmin Legend HCx gps with maps, and although TOPO maps are NOT compatible with this gps you CAN transfer routes and waypoints. I’ve found that there a number of FREE Garmin compatible maps available for download that are outstanding for a handheld gps, and once you overlay route and waypoint data from TOPO these applications can work nicely together.

using topo – Catherine A. Scott –
I’m sure this is good software but it sure isn’t user friendly. The first program disc downloaded fine but after six hours of messing with it, I still haven’t figured out how to use the other 5 DVDs that came in the package. I haven’t been able to use the 3D feature. There are no useful instructions that came with it. I emailed tech support and they sent 3 pages of instructions on how to fix it but I’m not familiar with any of the procedures they prescribe. There’s no live phone number to call that I can fine. I wish I would have just subribed to My Trails on line.
Don’t be fooled – mrvco – Colorado
Sadly the maps included in the TOPO! state series are NOT the same as the Trails Illustrated maps also sold by National Geographic. I have no idea why, but the TOPO! state series maps do not include trails on them like their TI maps. I’m told that the National Park versions do include trails on them, but only inside the parks.

This might be ok if all you need are topos showing roadways or are willing to trust GPS plots that you download from the Internet, but this package is not very useful otherwise.
Great! If u have the magellan triton gps – C. Coburn – Northern California
These maps are great! It works wonderfully with the magellan triton 1500 and the others in the series. You can download the maps with your own waypoints and routes directly to your triton! Just be sure to download the updates first.

I’ve used TOPO! for eight years and it’s the best there is for mapping software. I own software for 10 of the western states and use the program almost daily. I use the program in my laptop and when hooked up to my GPS, I have what amounts to a super detailed car navigation system with a 17″ screen. As new maps become available, you can download them free into your computer as needed and it’s a very easy procedure. Also, free upgrades are available on-line and that’s an easy procedure too.

To make the state series most useable, you need to add Back Roads Explorer, which gives much more detailed up-to-date street and street name information.

The only caveates with this program is that you need a relatively fast computer and lots of memory so you can copy the whole program to your hard drive so you don’t have to constantly change cd’s. Also, expect to take some time to fully get to know this program.

GPS Compatibility – golden_ – Colorado
GPS Compatibility…

As advertised, TOPO! works well with GPS units. I use it with a Garmin Vista Cx GPS frequently. Other people’s negative reviews concerning GPS compatibility probably stem from their assumption that they should be able to download the maps themselves to a GPS device. No, you can’t do that with just TOPO.

As advertised, you CAN download waypoints or routes before a trip, which becomes extremely helpful when you feel lost. And you CAN upload waypoints and tracks after a trip, which is very interesting to map where you’ve been.

General Comments on the Software…

This is an excellent product which I always use before going exploring or mountain climbing. I discover new features in the software all the time. I don’t think the program has ever crashed on me, and it is not hard to learn. 5 stars!!
Topo for Mac is horrible – A Reader – Northern CA, USA
The PC version works ok but if you own a Mac, you are out of luck. Major glitches of very basic uses (such as unable to upload waypoints from a spreadsheet to your GPS!! Both upload and download buttons and pulldowns send you to a download only option). It is one of the few Mac apps that will lock down your computer and not respond to force quit.

The interface is bizarre. Want to find a place? – go to “Edit”. Want to find a coordinate? – go to “View”. Want to find customer support? – go to the back of the room.
iMac 2.4 ghz OS 10.5.4, Topo 4.5.0
Out of date maps – M. Spasojevic – Capistrano Beach, CA.
I bought this software because I am a grad student and I had to survey alpine sites around the state of Colorado. I thought it would be great. It was not. The biggest problem is that the maps are out of date. For example several hiking trails are missing. I drove up at least ten roads that had locked gates that were not on the map. Many roads are not labeled or not labeled correctly. It was good for putting waypoints in my GPS, but that is all it was good for.

When we look at retail advertising and sales catalogues we see that the two categories are characterised by different styles of tracksuit. Training tracksuits that would be the choice of the sporting fraternity imitate a certain standard style and consist of a hard wearing fabric, normally polyester, with zips etc. that are functional.

The emphasis is on performance and durability though design and colour with sublimated embroidery is now the order of the day. So the training tracksuit could be summarised as attractive durable clothing essential to the football team and other sporting entities. However it is more than just clothing; it is the corporate image of a business where branding and success go hand in hand, therefore the sublimated embroidery on the football jerseys, shorts and sport socks reflecting the Sponsors name and brand image are crucial in promoting the game and team.

Team tracksuits will display team colours, kit design and Sponsor logo. Professional football teams may well have a number of training tracksuits but each will display the same branding and logo that defines the team and their Sponsor. The durable quality of the training tracksuit will be characterised by the fabric, careful seam stitching and design and the ability of the fabric to breathe and stretch without tearing. The common theme in training tracksuits is that they are fit for purpose.

When we talk about walking tracksuits then a somewhat different set of criteria is applied as regards fit for purpose wear. The rigours of everyday training will not apply and we are looking at a product that characterises comfort above all else. The wearer of the walking tracksuit is looking for flexibility in the fabric and more plain colours probably darker rather than bright. Walkers do not generally want to stand out like a sore thumb when hiking in the countryside or anywhere else so they normally opt for plain colours when purchasing a tracksuit. Blending into the environment is preferable to calling out like a siren, where ever we are walking, so subdued colours and designs are preferable to the intricate designs and colour combinations used in training tracksuits. Trouser design can be different where the walking tracksuit has normal or slightly wider leg bottoms to cover walking boots or shoes as opposed to tight or zipped training trouser leg bottoms.

The walking top is usually a little longer than the training top and has a loose waist as opposed to an elasticated tight waist. The fabric can be similar but does not need to be as durable and this provides a wide choice of fabrics for the consumer.

Last weekend was our BIG SURPRISE event after both the 9 and 11 am services. I pray that each of you who was able to went and shared a meal with someone else. Maybe there was a group of you; maybe you knew each other; maybe you found out you were next door neighbors; maybe you learned you work by one another, were from the same hometown, or know similar people; maybe you weren’t able to go last Sunday but you heard all about it and signed up for the next one. Whatever the case may be, we wanted to share with you the ‘why’ behind this idea

First and foremost, we need to be in community with each other and to do that we need to get to know each other. We are called to be ‘like Christ’, transformed into His image, bringing glory to the Father, while being the good news. Church is not a building we go to, it is a people we become. To become something, one has to participate in the process in an ongoing fashion, most often with the help of others: like a pitcher becomes a big league pitcher with practice and a coach, or a parent becomes great parent with the input of friends and family and time on the job. ‘Becoming’ is not a passive, occasional process, it is an intentional process that involves others. So we wanted to help move that along by introducing you to one another and creating an opportunity to connect and with everyone’s busy lives, we though what better time to do that then right after church, and who doesn’t like to go eat on Sunday!

Another reason we did it this way, geographically segmenting the congregation, was because often times when we don’t know what to do, we do what we know so we talk to, connect with or reach out to people like us. We often do this by gravitating towards people, like us, but we wanted to encourage another way of doing this, by connecting with people we live near. Why? Because, you have more of a chance of creating 7 days a week community, accountability and relationships when you live near someone. You might see each other at the store, the pharmacy, the stop light or the parent teach day. This creates a community of believers looking out for each other, at the mail box per se, encouraging one another on, praying for each other and even looking out for the needs of those you live near like a neighbor who lost a job, or a spouse and needs help around the house. Being equipped to be like Christ through bible studies, small groups and shared life experiences as well as being like Christ through serving becomes a part of your community life together.

The first century church functioned like this. It was groups of people who met in a larger gathering to learn about their faith and worship God, and who also lived near one another and met in each others homes, praying for and edifying each other in the faith, meeting the needs of those around them, this was a life of worship in community.

Acts 2:42-47 explains it like this: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

The church being done simply: by living, loving, serving, and worshipping together in both large gatherings and smaller ones, in their neighborhoods and in the ‘church’. Sunday worship is key, but so is getting to know one another in a way that encourages relationships with each other 7 days a week. That is why we did what we did last Sunday, we want you to get to know one another, preferably those you may see throughout the week, so you can grow in the faith together, serve together, live the Christian life, together. We will do it again soon, if you did not make it or need to sign up, please just let me know and we will connect you too!

The greatest number of the famous Chinese terra cotta warriors ever to travel to the United States will be on display beginning Thursday at the National Geographic Museum in Washington.

Terra Cotta Warriors: Guardians of China’s First Emperor, includes 15 life-size terra cotta figures and 100 sets of objects from the tomb of China’s first emperor, Qin Shihuangdi.

In the media preview of the exhibition, Terry Garcia, National Geographic’s executive vice president for mission programs, said that 96,000 tickets had been sold and that he hopes to reach 100,000 by this weekend.

Garcia said this has been an important week for China-U.S. relations, highlighted by President Obama’s visit to China.

Feng Xie, the deputy chief of mission of the Chinese Embassy, who was at the preview, called Obama’s visit a “great success” and indicated that China-U.S. relations have reached a new historic starting point.

“Obama’s visit to China is historic, and so is the Terra Cotta Warriors” exhibition he said.

The terra cotta warriors have been described as the “eighth wonder of the world.” Discovered after being buried for more than 2,000 years, the warriors are said to reveal secrets of the Qin dynasty.

The exhibition began its U.S. tour in California last year and then visited Atlanta and Houston. Washington, where the warriors will on display through March 31, is the final stop.

Let’s view the title here: Who Am I? Well, that pretty much sums up what this is going to be about. Who I am. I’d rather speak of what I’m going to be talking to you guys out there, but let’s start with me.

I live in the country with not much to do, so I find things to do. I’ve got many different hobbies, including writing, which is why I am here. But not just writing – I am several different people jammed into one cold hard shell of a body.

I draw, or sketch, whatever you may call it. Short and sweet, I put pencil to paper. And sometimes I end up putting color to paper, which usually ends in failure. But nonetheless, I draw. I’m hoping on attaining Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 in December, so I can show off my airbrushing techniques, especially on my sketches.

I play music, usually with the clarinet. I search all over the internet for free sheet music because I am a cheap skate, and thankfully for a wonderful website I have found of Zelda themes, I can hand them over to you guys for your personal use.

I read books. Sure, everyone does, but I pursue to read more often than others. I hope to post “book of the week”, or maybe something else that bores you less. I read more fantasy than nonfiction but whenever I read a Nat Geo it makes me interested.

And then we’ll get to my last topic – writing. This is what I’m here for, this is what I like to do, and this is something that I hope to achieve further in life. Sure, I’m pretty positive this post is much more boring than what will be in the future. Don’t worry, the future will arrive soon.

Cycling in Westport, it’s hills and valleys I couldn’t ignore if I tried. Here are some of the most challenging to me as a commuter. That is, those areas that slow me down most consistently.

The Cowtown Bluff

The Cowtown Bluff

Lewis and Clark wrote about this, and they should’ve. When you come through Kansas and approach Kansas City Missouri this is all you can think about. That is, if your burning your lunch to fuel your vehicle. I’d never even been close to being “zonked” until the Cowtown Bluff showed itself after a long ride through Kansas. This is the reason why the Broadway Bomb is such a quick route downtown. It’s basically an obtuse bulge on the face of a huge cliff!

The Broadway Bomb

The Broadway Bomb

This is the fastest route downtown if your coming from anywhere West of Gillham and East of Stateline. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself on the wrong side of either Gillham Valley or the Cowtown Bluff.

Gillham Valley

Gillham Valley

This long rut runs South from the crest of the same hill which the Broadway Bomb shares. It runs downhill that way, the whole length of midtown, until it stops at Brush Creek (about 47th St.). It’s a tossup whether or not to haul up or down it. Frankly, I’ve found it to be faster most times to track a bit farther East or West.

Generally, stay out of valleys. It’s always more comforting to know that you’ve got some thirty or forty feet of potential energy saved up.
