It’s been a few weeks but it’s never too late for an update.

Here are a few images showing how we produced a border using the Rumi pattern with Adam Williamson in the saturday workshops. My instructions are probably not fit to be followed so please ignore anything that sounds odd:

Creating a square using geometric construction of circles

Add rumi style shapes along central horizontal and vertical lines and add spirals in each division

next stage add smaller Rumi shapes on top of the larger ones - using their outline as a guide for placement

Starting to fill in spaces in and around the main shapes and the spirals with petal like shapes

Here are two similar versions of the same pattern but doubling the line to make it look more 3D. I considered cutting it out but haven't got the time at the moment

Using just the top half of the assembled pattern - we extended the square by half and using the same spiral forms we continued the pattern to create a corner. I used the one at the bottom as my final choice

And here is my final version. Using the tracing paper it's easier to keep drawing on to another sheet especially as you flip it over from one side to the other, that way there is always pencil on each side to transfer on to the sheet below. The lighter shading was initially due to the fact that my rubber would erase some of the colouring from the card too (which was from the inside of high street paper bag as I had no A2 size paper/card at home). I then decided to continue erasing the colour as a kind of effect and it didn't look so bad.

Detail of border pattern

I now want to apply this pattern on other materials. It would look really good as a border for a mirror or as a frame for something. But I’ll have to shelve that idea for now as there is too much to doooo…

Morris Louis was perhaps the greatest exponent of Colour Field painting. He was a notorious perfectionist with many paintings being destroyed that did not meet his exacting standards.

Born Morris Louis Bernstein in 1912 to Russian-Jewish immigrants, he was raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He studied at the Maryland Institute of Fine and Applied Arts from 1929 to 1933, moved to New York for six years to work on the Federal Art Project then returned to Baltimore in 1940. After seven years there he moved to Washington, first to the suburb of Silver Spring then in 1952 to the city itself.

Although keeping himself detached from the New York art scene it was a trip to the city in 1953 that led him to appropriate the technique he first saw used in the work of Helen Frankenthaler. She applied liquid paint onto unprimed canvas, it was then allowed to flow across and soak into the canvas, the result being a stain of paint as opposed to a layer of paint applied on the surface. Louis experimented on this basis creating paintings of extraordinary vibrancy.

Many of the leading American abstract painters of the 1950s and 60s, Louis included, were exponents of Colour Field painting, where whole works consisted of large expanses of more or less unmodulated colour. Louis painted a number of pictures using this technique beginning with ‘Veils’ (1954). In ‘Where’ (1960) his style moved towards colours positioned in rainbow-like bands on a bare canvas.

By the end of the Fifties his reputation was confirmed. He had his first foreign exhibition in 1960 at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London. Sadly, however, he died of lung cancer just two years later. His paintings remain widely exhibited.

“With Louis, fully autonomous abstract painting came into its own for really the first time, and did so in paintings of a quality that matches the level of their abstraction.” John Elderfield (from the introduction to the Art Council’s Exhibition of Louis’ work in 1974).

And since there’s still 50 percent of Dutch blood flowing trough my veins I thought it should be about Viktor & Rolf. In their ready-to- wear collection for the Fall 2009 have those neutral colors that can be seen on almost every runway this season. But we’re still talking about Viktor & Rolf and who are they when they don’t add a little crazy touch to them. I see alot of geometric shapes that come in small details but also draped garments and neutrals (as I’ve said before in this post). Personally I think the main focus in these garments is in the overall shape of them. The details look magnificent, big bold and beautiful mixed with minimalism. The Greek sculptures that were on the runway kind of showed were they got their inspiration from.

Johann Heinrich Lambert was born on August 26, 1728 at Mulhausen, Alsace, now Mulhouse, France. He died on September 25, 1777 at Berlin. Swiss-German mathematician, astronomer, physicist, and philosopher who provided the first rigorous proof than π (the ration of a circle’s circumference to its diameter) is irrational, meaning it cannot be expressed as the quotient of two integers.

The son of tailor, Lambert was largely self-educated and early began geometric and astronomical investigations by means of instruments he designed and built himself. He worked for a time as a bookkeeper, secretary and editor. As a private tutor in 1748, he gained access to a good library, which he utilized for self-improvement until 1759, when he resigned to settle in Augsburg. In 1764 he went to Berlin, where he received the patronage of Frederick the Great. His memoir containing the proof that π is irrational was published in 1768. In 1774 at ‘Berlin, he became editor of Astronomisches Jahrbuch oder Ephemeriden, an astronomical almanac.

Lambert made the first systematic development of hyperbolic functions. He is also responsible for many innovations in the study of heat and light. The lambert, a measurement of light intensity, was named in his honour. Among his most important works are Photometria (1760), Die Theorie der Parallellinien (1766; “The Theory of Parallel Lines”), and Pyrometrie (1779). The Neues Organon (1764; “New Organon”), his principal philosophical work, contains and analysis of a great variety of questions, among them formal logic, probability, and the principles of science.

Volkswagen’s foundry in Hannover, Germany, uses Metris laser scanning to inspect the geometry of sand core parts used in the production of molded aluminum engine parts. A CMM-mounted laser scanner accurately captures the fragile sand grain surfaces of entire sand core parts, a task delivering unsatisfactory results through touch probe measurements. Reports containing graphic geometric deviations help Volkswagen instantly evaluate the quality of the entire sand core surface, providing consistent and more reliable quality monitoring of sand core production equipment. In addition, the laser scanner’s capability to accurately inspect complex free-form parts showed great added value in optimizing sand core geometry, saving time, effort and cost by avoiding design iteration during aluminum part production.

I’m pretty excited to see this amazing Roger Vivier Geometric Shoulder bag just listed–it was released earlier this year and became an instant favorite with the fashion crowd. There’s something so chic and so simple about the shape; it looks a little ’70s vintage but also has a bit of a futuristic vibe. Bag Snob gave it a rave when it was launched in stores.

I’ve noticed a lot of geometric motifs in the news recently. How about Beyoncé’s Atelier Versace dress at the MTV Europe VMAs last month? That’s another winner in my book–I really liked the silver details on the mermaid dress, it took a girly gown and made it fierce.

2010: a new year – a new decade!

In a continuing recession, homeware retailers have looked to maximise the illusion of luxury at crunch-worthy prices. The last year of the noughties has seen a resurgence of rich jewel-toned hues, theatrical textures of velvets and feathers, sequins and shag. In the next decade, we can expect to find even more luxurious finds. At Next’s Spring/Summer 2010 launch, the trend continues to evolve, with a little inspiration from some of the great decades past.

In 2010, the high street retailer wants everyone to feel like they live in a futuristic Kylie Minogue video, and this silver sequined bedding from the artist’s Kylie at home collection will have anyone feeling like a glamourous pop star as they slip in for some chic 21st century beauty sleep.

Feel like a VIP in this hotel-inspired bedroom collection. Shimmering metalics, angular edges, mirrored Venetian style furniture, and white-washed monochromatics evoke a contemporary return of the 1940s Art Deco illusion of affluence and aspiration.

Big bold floral prints and colour-saturated farics will also help your home mimic a a sense of extravagance this spring. Bright optimistic florals of red roses, poppies, and pansies were featured, and wallpapers were reminiscent of the equally bold ’80s era of hedonistic decadence.

Purple, and its various shades, has always been reflective of royalty. I love this deep fuchsia bedding – from deep grape to vibrant magenta, the early ’90s hypercolour variegation creates a sense of depth and opulence.

Earthy oranges and tribal accessories hint at the carefree ’70s. Love the geo-dot and shag cushions – perfect for adding a playful touch to a modern, angularly sculpted sofa, orange is definitely a colour that will be around for a while.

The domestic goddesses of the 1950s were all about creating the perfectly organised, perfectly stylised kitchen. While we’ve come a long way, baby, who says our kitchens have to be boring? These tins are functional, affordable, and just plain fun. And the equally pastiche pastels will make a great addition to that crisp, white kitchen so popular today.

While the recession means we may have to stay at home more in 2010 than initially anticipated, Next prove that staying in really is the new going out by keeping our homes well-styled into the next decade.

After not having a meeting last week due to inclement weather our first speaker today was Joan Brown

After not having a meeting last week due to inclement weather our first speaker today was Joan Brown of JB Decorating – a residential and commercial interior designer. Joan talked today about What’s Hot and What’s Not, drawing on a book by Elaine Griffin called “Design Rules”. Things to keep in mind when redecorating your out of date rooms. Now out are draped throws – now extra blankets and linens should be folded in neat verticals and placed across the back of your couch, chair and the end of your bed. Out is the rolled towel fad – they should be fold into neat squares and stacked. Out are those boring floral and timid patterns – in are bold geometric patterns – especially the herringbone, ikats (large geometric weavings from India and South-East Asia) and bargello (a geometric needle point style started in Florence). Joan pointed out the another out is shabby and shaggy, including those drapes that puddle on the floor and unstructured swags – the new in – is tailoring – one inch pinch pleats and clearing the floor. Another out is the dark woods the wenge and espresso finishes and in is the honey browne walnut and American midtone (blond wood). Out - is the solid colored sisal rugs (unless it is a beach house or the South) – In - is the new patterned sisal rugs with the geometric designs. The other rug that is out is the shag (we all knew that right?) and in its place is the flat woven or dhurrie rugs from Asia. The last out that Joan from JB Decorating gave us was – stuff that looks new – the in for this refurbished heirlooms. Joan went on to say that wallpaper is making a big comeback with some very attractive designs – everything from very elegant to geometric patterns. She passed around a few sample books that showed off the damask patterns and some of the classic designs. A new thing in wall paper this year is wall paper squares – were you can put the pattern together the way you like. The out for wall paper is the infamous wallpaper borders! Look to Joan Brown of JB Decorating for all you interior design needs – she can provide you with a fresh eye on your space!!
