I haven’t read the book by Jon Ronson on which this film is based, but I knew enough about it

I haven’t read the book by Jon Ronson on which this film is based, but I knew enough about it to wonder how it would translate into a film. The answer is, sadly, not very well. The film is a waste of an interesting story (the authenticity of which is deliberately left unclear: the opening caption says “more of this is true than you would believe”, but the film doesn’t make any effort to separate fact from fiction) and a cast of talented actors.

The Men Who Stare at Goats tells the story of an army unit specialising in psychic warfare, the history of which is uncovered by Ewan McGregor’s small-town journalist, on a quest to find himself, and revealed through a series of flashbacks. And that’s pretty much it. It’s not a war film; it’s not an anti-war film; it’s not really a film. There is no real plot to speak of, just a series of loosely connected episodes which don’t really add up to anything. The timing of its release is also somewhat unfortunate as there is a sequence in which a soldier on an acid trip goes postal and opens fire in a military base.

Preposterous wigs

The performances are all good, with the possible exception of McGregor, who doesn’t really have anything much to do except stand around and look incredulous, occasionally interjecting in a slightly dodgy American accent. Perhaps it’s because he’s the only one who hasn’t been supplied with implausible facial hair. George Clooney, despite his usual swoonworthiness being disguised by the aforementioned ‘tache, manages to make the character of Lyn Cassady credible enough that it is possible to believe he is able to stop a goat’s heart just by staring at it. Jeff Bridges gets all the laughs as his mentor, Bill Django, but Kevin Spacey is reduced to the status of pantomime villain as his arch rival Larry Cooper (and is also saddled with a preposterous wig in the flashback sequences).

I wanted to like this, I really did, but I left the cinema feeling decidedly nonplussed. There are some funny moments, especially in the flashbacks to the 1970s, and it ends on a feel-good note, but it just isn’t very engaging. Like The Boat That Rocked, which I couldn’t have hated more if it had had Keira Knightley in it, it looks like it was considerably more fun to make than it is to watch. I hope that when these fine actors work together again, they are given material which is more worthy of their collective talents.

As we discussed in a previous article about Different Types of Jacket Lapels, there are three types

As we discussed in a previous article about Different Types of Jacket Lapels, there are three types that are most common: Notched, Peaked, and Shawl. What we didn’t discuss in that article was when to wear each of these jacket types. In this article, we’ll analyze briefly the differences between the three types of lapels to give you an idea of how you can go about making your choices.

Shawl Lapel

The shawl lapel is mostly seen with dinner jackets. This type of lapel was originally designed to fit men with wide shoulders. This type of jacket is associated James Bond by a few circles. The shawl lapel is mostly considered to be the most formal of the 3 jacket lapels and is probably is observed less than the other two as well. As of late, some fashion labels such as Dolce & Gabbana have been pushing this look in recent times:

Peaked Lapel

The peaked lapel is more formal than the notched lapel and less common. Furthermore, this lapel is less formal than the shawl lapel and more common. Wearing a tuxedo with a peaked lapel is very desirable. This jacket was originally designed to give men with smaller frames a frame boost (makes your shoulders look wider). You can see Tom Cruise Wearing a Peaked Lapel Below:

Notched Lapel

The notched lapel is the most common type of lapel and is also the least formal of the 3 types of lapels (however, this doesn’t mean that if wear a notched lapel that your suit is not formal). You’ll typically see George Clooney wearing this type of lapel quite well:

George Clooney isn’t happy just being rich and handsome. He also wants to stop the Iraq War and prevent genocide in Darfur. Sharon Stone, who became famous for wearing no knickers in 1992’s Basic Instinct, can now be found wearing sensible trousers and visiting Israel to promote peace.

But these people are actors, not politicians. They’re paid a truckload of money to look good under strong light. Why are they lecturing us on social issues?

Of course, Hollywood actors live in a democracy and have the right to speak their mind. It’s just that some actors are flakes, and there’s a suspicion they’re just adopting fashionable causes to appear smarter.

And let’s face it. Some actors seem as thick as bricks. For every scholarly type like John Malkovich, who gives the impression he’s wandered onto a movie set on his way back from a Mensa conference, there’s a knucklehead like Ashton Kutcher.

Director and producer Grant Heslov brings a psychedelic, drug-induced comedic outlook at life with “

Director and producer Grant Heslov brings a psychedelic, drug-induced comedic outlook at life with “Men Who Stare at Goats.”

The film is about reporter Bob Wilton(Ewan McGregor) at a ho-hum newspaper and who is fed up with the dullness of his life. After interviewing a local man claiming to be a former “psychic soldier” and his wife leaving him for an one-armed man, Wilton jets off to the Middle East in search of his next big story. Wilton is convinced he should produce stories as a war correspondent, but is often left behind. One evening at a hotel restaurant he encounters Lyn Cassady(George Clooney), a strange figure who says he’s part of a secret U.S. military wing called the New Earth Army. This unit is described as “warrior monks” who fight war with their minds by using psychic abilities, can pass through solid walls and stop goats heartbeats by staring at them. Are you lost yet?

Wilton is intrigued and follows Cassady into the desert on a mission that Cassady isn’t even sure of. It is slowly revealed to the audience the two are tracking Cassady’s former psychic teacher Bill Django(Jeff Bridges). They must also battle the psychic warrior who made the entire unit fall apart, Larry Hooper(Kevin Spacey).

Viewing the trailer at another film, I thought this film looked really intriguing. It has a great assortment of cast (McGregor, Clooney and Spacey). After watching it, it seemed like two hours of torture. The storyline started out normal enough until Wilton met Cassady. The events of the duo seem too strange to believe, or even comprehend at times. In one scene, Wilton and Cassady are driving through the desert when Cassady says he is “cloud bursting” to keep himself in shape. He stares at a large, puffy cloud and it disburses before his eyes. A few second later, Cassady hits a large rock along the highway when there was nothing else to hit. Another instance is when Django promotes the use of LSD and marijuana so the New Army can “free themselves” from the world. A lot of people have used LSD, but really?

I had trouble engaging with the story and keeping my attention focused on the film. The plot was very jerky and disconnected.

The difficulty of turning non-fiction into a convincing and enjoyable fictional narrative has defeat

The difficulty of turning non-fiction into a convincing and enjoyable fictional narrative has defeated many a director including most recently Richard Linklater with the inexorable Fast Food Nation, so an adaptation of Jon Ronson’s book The Men Who Stare At Goats was always going to be hard work for first time director Grant Heslov, who previously co-wrote George Clooney’s Good Night and Good Luck.

This film starts with the disclaimer that more of this story than you would think and goes on to tell the story of hapless Ann Arbor journalist Bob Wilton who uses the break-up of his marriage as the catalyst to become a war correspondent on the War on Terror. Frustrated and humiliated in a Kuwaiti hotel, Wilton stumbles across George Clooney’s Lyn Cassady, a name he recognises from his days interviewing in Ann Arbor. What follows is part-road movie and part-madcap comedy exploring the antics of the so-called “New Earth Army” – a black op exploring the possibilities of the mind in combat led by Jeff Bridges’ Bill Django.

There are a number of problems with this film, most notably with the film’s structure. The road movie sections are present day which leaves much of the antics of the army in flashback narrated by McGregor. As a device, this doesn’t work and takes the audience in and out of the movie. The other problem is that I just didn’t find a lot of this film to be particularly funny. A lot of the jokes fell flat, particularly between McGregor and Clooney and this is symptomatic of performances which feel “phoned in” and unremarkable. With no-one is this more apparent than with Jeff Bridges who could play the drugged-up hippy role in his sleep. In the case of Clooney, McGregor, Bridges and Spacey, all of them have played similar roles better in better films.

The book is a fun interesting book and whilst some of that fun makes it onto the screen, once again this film is just another illustration that adapting non-fiction is tricky.

For some random reason (which is becoming the mantra of my life), I was thinking about some of the stupid things I’ve said over the years. There have been some doozies, make no mistake. But I’m quite proud of this little bit of drivel from waaaay back when, typed out during an IM chat with a friend.

“Well, crannies sounds like grannies and you know how I feel about old people, so I stay away from crannies…they might have grannies in them. Nooks have crooks, but crooks can be hot…like George Clooney in Out of Sight.” — Deanna Decker on waffles.

“I got my salad too big. I am already bored eating it.” — Deanna Decker on lunch.

In reading these over, I sound like I have about two brain cells bouncing around in my head with scant else. But they make me laugh; the stupidity of these little sarcastic gems that I lovingly call “Deanna Logic”. So HA! I can laugh at myself and that’s all that should count. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries.

En el año 2000 realizan otra obra maestra, O brother where are thou?

Estrenan The man who wasn´t there (El hombre que no estuvo allí).

No country for old men

Ladies’ man George Clooney isn’t short on romance pointers – even if they’re for a younger, female costar.

“He had rules for me about dating and stuff. It was really sweet,” Anna Kendrick said at Saturday’s press day for their new comedy/drama Up in the Air, out Dec. 4. “It’s funny, actually. A friend of his that was his age [48] was dating somebody younger than me. He thought that was fine. I was like, ‘What would you say to me if I were dating somebody your age?’ He said, ‘Oh no, absolutely not.’ “

The 24-year-old admits, “He had this kind of older brother thing with me.” And, her character, who has argumentative romantic tension with Clooney in the film, jokes, “Is he too old for me? Yes. George Clooney is too old for me.”

Good thing, too, since Clooney is dating MTV Italy host Elisabetta Canalis.

Kendrick, who also currently stars in The Twilight Saga: New Moon, says she’s happy just to spar with him.

“I loved yelling at George. I loved telling George off. I loved telling George that he was a 12-year-old. I was so looking forward to that scene almost to the extent that I was concerned that it was going to be a kind of indulgent thing … It’s like every ex-boyfriend I have ever had in the form of George Clooney on a boardwalk. [It] was a lot of fun.”

Not.

Mas ontem fui no show do cara e aí ficou foda.

If you read this blog regularly, you know I’ve been reviewing a string of movies that, though

If you read this blog regularly, you know I’ve been reviewing a string of movies that, though well-crafted, are so depressing you need to down a fistful of Xanax after watching. Imagine my relief, then, when I got to see Jason Reitman’s wonderful Up in the Air (opening Dec. 4), which is moving and thought-provoking but also entertaining in the purest sense of the word.

George Clooney plays Ryan Bingham, a man who flies all over the country to fire people when in-house managers don’t have the stones to do it themselves. Theoretically, this third-party method also protects company personnel from retaliation by pink-slipped employees. (Be sure and read my notes below from the Q & A; Reitman told amazing stories about using non-actors who’d really lost their jobs.)

© DW Studs./Cold Spring Pics./Dale Robinette

It’s a tough line of work but Bingham loves it. He’s got his firing technique honed to a science, has no problem staying disconnected from people’s emotional reactions, and is more comfortable on the road than in his apartment, which looks less homey than his hotel rooms. He also has Alex (Vera Farmiga), a fellow frequent flyer and bed partner whenever they’re in the same city. No strings, no responsibilities— just the way Bingham likes it.

© DW Studs./Cold Spring Pics./Dale Robinette

His existence is threatened when his boss (Jason Bateman) hires a precocious upstart, Natalie (Anna Kendrick), who suggests that firings can be done via teleconference to save travel costs. When Bingham protests, his boss tells him to take her on the road to see which method is better. Though high-strung and ambitious, Natalie helps Bingham realize that being grounded, literally and emotionally, might be a good thing.

Clooney’s performance here is his most vulnerable yet. There are times when Bingham is looking at Alex and Clooney just strips his face naked—eyes softened, completely defenseless—making you think, if you didn’t know better, that you’re watching him fall in love with Farmiga right there on screen. Sometimes his gaze is so intimate, I felt like a perv stealing his private moments.

© DW Studs./Cold Spring Pics./Dale Robinette

Farmiga matches Clooney note for note and the heat between them is potent. She’s been consistently strong in little-seen films like Down to the Bone and Breaking and Entering; here’s hoping Air will take her career higher.

Kendrick is having a moment right now with this movie and New Moon, in which she plays Bella’s friend Jessica. She deserves the attention; her work here is infused with maturity and smarts. (Can’t comment on her Moon performance since I probably won’t see it.)

© DW Studs./Cold Spring Pics./Dale Robinette

As for director, producer and co-writer Reitman (the movie is based on a novel by Walter Kirn), he’s proven beyond a doubt he’s no Tori Spelling. I’ll go further to say this movie is better than anything his father, Ivan, ever directed. Jason includes social commentary and emotional resonance with the humor; I can’t say the same for Meatballs, Twins or Kindergarten Cop. (OK, Ghostbusters was good but not Oscar material.) When Air is up for Best Picture—I think it has an excellent chance of winning —you’ll root for it, not roll your eyes like you do at elitist films that leave you wondering, “What the hell?”

After the Variety screening I attended, Reitman, Farmiga and Kendrick participated in a Q & A. Interesting tidbits revealed:

The film’s St. Louis casting director, Joni Tackette, placed an ad looking for people who had recently lost their jobs and were willing to share their experiences on camera. Though actors (J.K. Simmons and Zach Galifianakis among them) play some of the laid-off workers, twenty-two respondents ended up in the firing sequences, using their own words. Reitman said they talked about things he’d never think to write, in a way he’d never think to direct them. [This made for incredibly affecting scenes. When I was watching them, I kept thinking, "Who are all these actors? They're so real."]

After a speaking engagement in St. Louis, Reitman was approached by a 50-year-old man named Kevin with a cassette tape. On it, Kevin explained he’d just lost his job and had written a song about what it means to try and find purpose in the world. Reitman said “what follows isn’t the most beautiful song but [it's] incredibly authentic.” He put it over the end credits, complete with Kevin’s intro about his situation.

The movie was mostly shot in St. Louis and Detroit, which were among the cities hardest hit by the recession. Cast and crew filmed in office buildings that were cleared out and abandoned like they were supposed to be in the movie.

Alex and Natalie aren’t in the book. Reitman wrote those roles specifically for Farmiga and Kendrick.

Farmiga said she confided in Clooney that if she could cuddle up to any cinematic character, she’d choose Karl from Sling Blade. This made Clooney repeatedly do Karl imitations between takes.

Clooney never goes to his trailer and never wears any makeup. Ever.

Too bad he doesn’t have his paycheck, and I’m not his manager.

Me? The baldness gene….

(No offense, Dad.)

For the people who don’t get the title.

Much of “The Men Who Stare At Goats” follows dumb-struck reporter Bob Wilton (Ewan MacGregor) and straight-faced former psychic spy Lyn Cassidy (George Clooney) meandering through the Iraqi desert. Sadly, the movie follows suit, heading in several different directions at once, none of which with confidence. It is satirical but never makes the target inherently clear. It is farcical yet it continues to persist that what we are watching really happened. Thankfully, the movie manages to give the audience some good belly laughs while they scratch their heads trying to figure out the direction it is heading.

The main plot arc follows Wilton and Cassidy as they traverse through Iraq on a mission to find the remnants of the New Earth Army, a battalion using New Age tactics to gain such powers as invisibility, remote viewing, and walking through walls. Strangely, it is Wilton who tells us the history of the group informally known as the “Jedi Warriors.” It is curious that the filmmakers chose him to narrate the story through fragments in the principal narrative, seeing as Wilton would have no idea of what happened. These segments are the best and most uproarious parts of the movie, but they are thrown into the story so haphazardly that it becomes difficult to remember what is happening to Wilton and Cassidy. Both were story lines crucial to a full movie, but with a little discretion and some more mapping, a more cogent and enjoyable experience could have been easily possible.

“The Men Who Stare At Goats” really shines in its moments of pure absurdity, which could be exactly what the filmmakers didn’t want since they want us to believe that much of what is portrayed actually occurred. They aim for bizarrely plausible, but they wind up with laughably ridiculous. It is certainly enjoyable to see George Clooney in a role where he isn’t quite so staid and upright, and one can get a hearty chuckle out of seeing him with longer locks and putting on his boogie shoes. Ewan MacGregor, possibly cast just for added irony on all the Jedi jokes, performs almost a straight man-straight man routine with Clooney, yet somehow the combination yields a great deal of laughs. Jeff Bridges channels a bit of “The Dude” and Kevin Spacey brings an antagonistic smugness to his role, but neither seem entirely committed. In the end, “The Men Who Stare At Goats” provides you some of what you want but definitely not in the way that you want it. B /
