Over the years, Macca’s solo renditions of Beatles’ classics have gotten bigger —

Over the years, Macca’s solo renditions of Beatles’ classics have gotten bigger — bloated really — for stadium shows. All polish, no grit.

But here Paul straps on his guitar and gets after it with his 2009 touring band on the highly underrated Beatles tune “I’ve Got A Feeling.” This performance has all the balls of the original and retains the feel of a barroom blisterer. There’s no sense that this was performed by arena-ready hired guns. It’s as if Paul was back on the roof with the lads.

I’m stunned at how good this rendition is. There’s one major downside: Abe Laboriel, Jr. (badly) singing John’s middle eight. Isn’t there a better singer in Paul’s band?

Blender Gallery in Paddington is hosting a photo exhibition by Patti Boyd, former wife of George Harrison and Eric Clapton. Labeled one of the original 1960’s ‘it girls’—or what we would now call a ‘celebrity’—Boyd was a model, a photographer and a columnist. Having lived in the most creative music period, she is believed to have been the inspiration of a number of classic songs, most notably Harrison’s Something, For You Blue, and Clapton’s Layla, Wonderful Tonight and Bell Bottom Blues.

She married Harrison in 1966 after meeting him on the set of A Hard Day’s Night movie. Many say it was her growing interest in Eastern philosophy, that ispired The Beatles’ subsequent exploration of transcendental meditation and the 1968 visit to the Indian guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Harrison and Boyd divorced in 1977, and two years later, she married Eric Clapton, who had long been in love with Boyd—Layla the ultimate symbol to their unrewarded love. Boyd was with Clapton through his alcohol and heroin addiction, before they split at the end of the 1980’s. The two are still friends, and she also remained close to Harrison until his death in 2001.

Boyd has documented these happenings since the late 1960’s. Through The Eyes Of A Muse—Photographs By Pattie Boyd is an opportunity to take an intimate look at some epoch-making lives and times, seen through the eyes of an ultimate insider. The exhibition is on until Thursday 24 December at the Blender Gallery.

The video quality is pretty lame, but the audio is good and this duet performance of Paul and George

The video quality is pretty lame, but the audio is good and this duet performance of Paul and George on SNL in the late 70’s remains a classic.

Homeward Bound is the second song they do, after Here Comes The Sun, and it’s this Paul Simon song I was first looking for as fitting music for this traveling holiday.

For those with memories that stretch back this far, filmmaker Gary Weiss also made an SNL short film with Homeward Bound as the soundtrack to wonderful montage scenes of family reunions at airports, and train and bus terminals.

Here’s hoping all your travels go well, even if only they’re to and from the convenience store for tampons and tonic water. Happy Thanksgiving!

On Saurday, November 14th, I had one of the greatest nights of my life! I saw thenewno2 and Wolfmother at the State Theater! YAY!!! They were so amazing!

thenewno2 is one of my favoritest bands of all time! There are only two people in the band; Dhani Harrison and Oli Hecks. Dhani is George Harrison’s son. But they add, like, three people when they tour. Yeah! thenewno2 is a blues-elecro alternative band. My favorite song by them is Another John Doe. And the video is pretty wicked too! Check it out! Actually, all the videos that they have are wicked. So check ALL of them out!

I’ve heard off the band Wolfmother and heard three of their songs, but ever since that fatefull day, I can’t stop listening to them! I even went out and bought their first CD! And it’s amazing! Andrew Shockdale is one of the coolest people ever. He’s the singer and lead guitar player for Wolfmother. He went into the crowd twice and people kept giving him drinks when he was on stage! How awesome is that? Now I need a time machine to go back to that night…

BY BRENT JOHNSON

For 20 years, Pete Best barely played the drums.

You could call the former Beatle one of pop music’s greatest casualties. He was the group’s original drummer — until John, Paul and George replaced him with Ringo for reasons that remain a mystery even to Best.

He ditched music a few years later, beginning a two-decade career as a civil servant.

“I still had me drums,” Best, now 66, recalls in his charmingly cheeky Liverpudlian accent, ironically not a far cry from Ringo’s. “I just covered them up in a dustsheet.”

Not anymore. Forty-six years after his famous firing, he and the Pete Best Band have released their first record, a musical biography called Haymans Green. The group — which includes his younger brother Roag, who shares drumming duties with Pete — will play selections from the album at the Record Collector in Bordentown on Sunday.

The title of the album is an allusion the to street where Best’s childhood home sits in Liverpool.

Best Friends: Pete Best sandwiched between Lennon and Harrison.

“There’s so many memories there,” Best says via phone on a recent Monday morning from his hotel room during a tour stop in Ohio. “It was Beatle headquarters for many, many years.”

Best doesn’t harbor bitterness or regret. He already collaborated on a book and documentary about his time with the Beatles. Now, the album, which he co-wrote with his bandmates, is even awash in melodies and
chord progressions that recall Rubber Soul.

“People turn around and say it’s Beatlesque,” Best says. “Other people turn around and say they hear Crowded House. … “I think it’s natural. Simply because of the era, because it deals with my life story. There had to be a certain amount of Beatlesque in it. I mean, like every other band we’re influenced by them. I played with them.”

‘40-Odd Years Ago’

Best’s family was actually instrumental in the Beatles’ beginning. His mother, Mona, turned the basement of their Haymans Green house into the Casbah Coffee Club, a music venue designed for local bands. The Quarrymen — featuring a young John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison — played opening night on Aug. 29, 1959.

Best was a member of a different group, the Blackjacks. But in August 1960, McCartney phoned the 19-year-old Best with an offer: The Beatles were about to begin a tour of Hamburg, Germany, and they needed a drummer.

The result was a legendary trip filled with sex and raucous rock that helped define the group’s attitude and sound. It’s chronicled in a track on Haymans Green called “Around And Around.”

Over the next two years, the Best-era Beatles stormed through sets packed with American R&B and rock songs, donning leather jackets and greaser haircuts. They landed a deal with legendary German producer
Burt Kaempfert that resulted in recordings of a few covers, a few originals and a minor hit, when they backed singer Tony Sheridan on a rocking version of “My Bonnie.”

But in 1962, shortly after auditioning for producer George Martin and EMI Records in Britain, the band decided to oust Best, assigning manager Brian Epstein to break the news. Rumors for the reason were many: that Martin didn’t like his drumming, that McCartney was jealousof the attention women paid to the handsome Best, that the drummer was too introverted.

Best says he doesn’t waste his time speculating.

Pete Best circa 2005

“The drummer theory, which was the one that was given as the dismissal, has never held up water,” he says of the idea that Martin didn’t like his playing. “People laugh at that. … People who saw me play then and people who have seen me play on the road shows now turn around and say, ‘That couldn’t have been the reason.’

“To me, it’s like: Fine, it happened. I’ve lived my life. … I’ve got my health and happiness and a sense of humor. And if I can wake up every morning to that, why the hell have I got to worry about something which happened 40-odd years ago?”

Stepping Outside

1963: The Beatles break big in Britain.
1964: Ed Sullivan, Beatlemania.
1967: “Sgt. Pepper.”

All the while, Best was bouncing around bands, releasing a few minor records.

But in 1968, he took the 9-to-5 route and focused on his family. The first single from Hayman Green, “Step Outside,” is about that period.

“You’re married, you have to basically step outside the business, have a look ’round, see what else was available, you had a family you have to provide security for,” explains Best, who has two daughters with
Kathy, his wife of for more than 40 years. “If you listen to the lyrics, that’s what you do. You’re stepping outside, seeing what’s available and making your own decision, which way you’re gonna go.”

Then, in 1988, Best agreed to play a one-off gig in Liverpool.

“My mother and my wife Kathy were there at the show,” he recalls, “and basically came up afterwards and turned around and said, ‘You don’t know it, Pete, but you’re going to be going back into show business.’
And how right they were.”

The Pete Best Band has been around for the last six years, featuring a revolving set of musicians he’s known from Liverpool. Appropriately, they recorded Haymans Green at a studio built on the first floor of
Best’s family home, right above the Casbah — which is still a tourist attraction in his hometown.

A Laugh And A Joke

As for the Beatles? Best played on a few bills with his former bandmates shortly after his sacking. But he says he hasn’t formally spoken with any of them since he was let go.

“If they want to get in touch with me, they know where I am,” says Best, who still lives in Liverpool. “I’ve tried to get in touch with them — not now, but in the early days. But it was pointless. You have different priorities in life.”

He’s open to the idea of speaking with McCartney or Starr, the only remaining members alive. And he certainly doesn’t plan on finding out what actually happened all those years ago.

“We’re no longer young kids anymore,” Best says. “We’ve matured, we’ve grown, we’re on the latter end of our careers. … It’s like, ‘Well, hang on a minute. Before we leave the planet, let’s get together and
have a laugh and a joke. Not re-open up old wounds again about what happened 40-odd bloody years ago.’ No one’s interested in that. At least I’m not.”

Best says he’s a Beatles fan, though. He has what he calls a “comprehensive album collection” of Fab Four recordings — which he never had to buy, since people often gave him records.

His favorite is The White Album.

The new album from The Pete Best Band

“I think instead if they put it into one album, it would have been slightly better,” he says. “But I think it’s an old favorite of mine. It more or less shows what they were all about.”

A few of the recordings Best played on with the Beatles were released in 1995 as part of the famed “Anthology” series. And Best has made a late-life career touring the U.S. with the Pete Best Band. In addition
to Haymans Green numbers, they mix in Beatles-era covers like “Kansas City,” “Slow Down” and “Besame Mucho.”

His legacy is still growing, too. Best was recently inducted into the Liverpool music hall of fame. And he made a cameo in the recent comedy The Rocker, appropriately about a former hard-rock drummer kicked out a band before it hit stardom.

After the album is released internationally, the Pete Best Band may tour a few other countries, as well. Then, maybe a new record next year.

“If the response continues to be the way it is at the moment, we’ll be back in the recording studio,” he says. “It’s as simple as that.”

No more dustsheets on drum sets.

Have you ever met one of your heroes? As a teenager I was a huge Beatles fan. I knew all the songs, all the lyrics. In fact I was so nerdy I could have told you the track order of every single (British version) album they produced between the years of 1962 and 1970. I was an uber-Fab Four geek. The inspiration of their incredible songwriting led me to write and perform songs of my own. Of the four, John Lennon was my biggest hero but I was well aware that all four of them made the band what it was – take any of them away and I do not believe their career would have been quite as successful.

In 1990 the guitarist in my band, Niall, offered me a ticket to see Paul McCartney play at Wembley Arena. This was his first major tour in some time (possibly his first since having ditched the ‘Wings’ format of his ever-changing backing band) and punters were told to expect plenty of Beatles songs. Niall’s brother-in-law was McCartney’s press agent at the time, which meant that we not only had tickets, we had backstage passes (which explains how I met Donald Sutherland backstage at a McCartney gig).

I spent weeks anticipating the fact that I was going to meet one of my childhood heroes. Yes of course I’d have loved for John Lennon to still be alive and to be able to meet him (meet him? I’d have put super-glue on my palm before shaking hands with him in order to get plenty of time to chat to the guy!). What does one say to such an important, if distant, figure in their lives? “Your music changed my life, Paul.” Hmm, bit corny and probably something he’s heard his whole life. “I love you.” Me and several million other people. I couldn’t work out whether there was anything worth saying and decided to just realize how lucky I was to be able to be in the same room as the guy.

As it turned out, even if I’d had a perfect speech planned to harangue the man with, I wouldn’t have been likely to get it out as when he was suddenly stood in front of me (Linda by his side), my tongue stuck itself to the roof of my mouth and it was all I could do to mumble “Hello” as we shook hands. In my defence, as he entered the room he really did bring that superstar presence into the place. This was one of the most famous people in the world and I guess if I was going to be reduced to a speechless buffoon I’d rather it was by a Beatle than by anyone else in the world.

The gig that evening reduced me to tears of joy so many times. ‘Live and Let Die’ was amazing, as were quite a few of his solo classics (even ‘Ebony and Ivory’ took on a poignancy I’d never credited it with before). But it was hearing Beatle’s songs live that brought the tears to my eyes again and again: ‘The Long and Winding Road’, ‘Hey Jude’, ‘Yesterday’ and then the entire medley from the second half of Abbey Road, concluding with ‘The End’, fittingly the last thing his former band ever recorded. By the end of the night I was practically speechless again and I’d realised something. The middle eight of ‘The Long and Winding Road’, which I’d always felt was ‘mine’ as a teenager, do not apply. ‘Many times I’ve been alone and many times I’ve cried’? Actually, despite the many times I had cried in those formative years, I’d never been alone – I could always stick a Beatles album on the turntable and let their songs chase away my loneliness.

Every so often you come across a CD or LP where you just can’t identify the country it was rel

Every so often you come across a CD or LP where you just can’t identify the country it was released in. Its kind of frustrating because collectors usually like to know this kind of detail…especially when you come across usual or different packaging of a release you think you know well.

That’s the case here with this three-LP set from 1971 of George Harrison’s “Concert for Bangladesh”.

Every copy I’ve seen to date comes in a hard cardboard box, with a lid that lifts off and looks like this:

The usual "Concert for Bangladesh" box

The box contains the three vinyl discs, and the white-covered 64-page book of concert photos, text and credits for the album. The rear of this box is plain and has no writing on it.

However, I have a copy in the collection that’s a bit different. Its a box, but made of soft cardboard that doesn’t have a lid. The front cover looks familiar enough:

Front cover "Concert for Bangladesh"

So far so good. But this release has flaps on the back which you pull out to get access to the records and book inside:

The flaps in the closed position

You flip open these flaps and the “box” looks like this:

"Concert for Bangladesh" open

From what I can tell the US, UK and Australian versions all have the lidded box, and not this top-opening, slide-out style box. Also the US and UK versions have dark khaki brown inner sleeves in which the records sit (the Australian release doesn’t have any paper sleeves).

Inside this box though the LPs are in light yellow colored thin paper sleeves:

The LPs are in yellow paper sleeves

The place you can usually tell the country of origin is in the small print on the labels of the records themselves. This one has no hints – with no mention of a country of origin. However, it does have a lot more copyright information on each disc, located just near the record number information (see top the left-hand side in the pics below as compared to the Australian release):

The label of the "strange" version - with copyright info top left

Compare this to the official Australian release:

The Australian release label - note no copyright info

The final main difference is that the words “Sole Distributors, Gramophone Record Company, Ltd” are written on the labels and prominently across the back of the box. The image below is from the rear of the box:

"Sole Distributors, Gramophone Record Company, Ltd" printed on the rear of the box

So, a weird one.

Being a huge worldwide Apple release, this concert disc set would have been issued in a large number of countries. I have my suspicions that this one here could be either the New Zealand or the Indian release. But I don’t have anything to prove that.

If anyone has any information on this release please let me know by submitting a comment. Cheers for now.

For any fan of the Fab Four, there is always a moment where we are listening to their music (usually

For any fan of the Fab Four, there is always a moment where we are listening to their music (usually a Beatles album) and say to ourselves, ‘I wonder what would have happened if the Beatles never broke up…?’. Sometimes, when listening to a solo Beatles song that is just ok, we wonder what the result would have been if the other Beatles had been involved and collaborated for that song. We hear ‘Beatle-esque’ songs from other artists or groups and say to ourselves, ‘That should have been a Beatles song’.

In other realities on parallel universes anything could happen and even Hillary Clinton could be the first female U.S. President! As shocking as that sounds, maybe even the Beatles stayed together after releasing ‘Abbey Road’ and continued recording as a group between their solo projects. Imagine the Traveling Ono Band or Wings-A-Rama or just a cassette tape with 11 songs pulled from an alternate reality into our reality!

Thanks to James Richards at http://TheBeatlesNeverBrokeUp.com we have a glimpse into this alternate universe and the music off of the Beatles album ‘Everyday Chemistry’. On this tape we hear the music that we have come to know as the Beatles Solo material, but intertwined in a way that is reminiscent of ’I've Got A Feeling’ or ‘A Day In The Life’ with ideas and song fragments swirling around in a musical tapestry that sounds both familiar and new at the same time.

What if Jeff Lynne was to produce the Beatles after George Martin retired? Is this what we would hear? It’s possible. Jeff Lynne has worked with and produced albums for Paul, George and Ringo and he posthumously worked with John on ‘Free As A Bird’ and ‘Real Love’ for the project ‘Anthology’ in our reality and I can hear shades of Jeff Lynne in the contents of the ‘Everyday Chemistry’ album.

Don’t just take my word for it, just suspend disbelief like you would for a 90 minute big screen feature that the local multiplex and go to http://The BeatlesNeverBrokeUp.com and listen for yourself.
