Since I was a young teeny bopper, I dreamed of seeing shows in London. My friends and I found out about new bands from magazines and radio. Shocking! I was the type of kid that once I fell in love with an artist bought singles and when it came to George Michael I would buy them in every single format: 45″, tape (!!!), vinyl remixes with B-sides, even the short lived mini-discs.

Just like the Highlander, there could be only one– 1 super-mega-star that always captivated me above the rest and that remains, the smooth vocals of the uber-talent George Michael. Although in the US, he shied away from spending a lot of time here after his sex scandal in the Will Rogers Park, I think he underestimated how much Americans love a good sex scandel, pretend to be shocked by it, and then embrace (minus violent evidence Mr. Simpson and Mr. Brown) that star again (i.e. Rob Lowe & Hugh Grant.)

I have thus been waiting for a while to see George Michael and love the anticipation that built up to George Michael Week on X Factor.

The newsreporter is actually making it sound like these were new rumors, ones that have been circulating for months on the net and that it wasn’t all planned out carefully. There may have been some back and forth about song choices, but seriously God bless the X Factor for giving George yet another generation to embrace his amazing music.

It is kind of funny Stacey choose a song George covered, “I Can’t Make You Love Me” as her choice for George Michael– X Factor Week. Um, George has written amazing ballads (Father Figure; Kissing A Fool; can I get a Praying For Time anyone?) of his own so why cover a cover?  Stacey does a very decent job singing it but as a long time George fan I wish you had a bit of better direction on that choice.

Nice job Stacey, hope your nerves calmed down. But what could be more entertaining then Simon Cowell’s penchant for young girls with big voices (ala the boring Leona Lewis great chops sick of her fragility)? How about these two over hair-gelled twins that remind me of Bros from yesteryear? Did that reporter from the first clip pique your curiosity for them singing ‘Wham! Rap’?

John & Edward oh my! If I was 13 I would be in love with you, although I would not have seen George and Andy perform the original versions of the songs you combined. There were a lot of dancers and jumps and you wearing shirts that said ‘Choose Life’ which was the styling in the video for “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” — not even on the same albums as either one of the songs chosen a minus ten on the GM fan chart. The teeny bopper matching set started with “I’m Your Man” swapping out the breakdown rap in there for indeed, for the one from “Wham! Rap.”

As much as I love twins, this was a double blunder of stiff choreography, bad timing and Simon agreed with me. His comments are so dead on as the other judges tried not to blatantly laughed in their faces. Poor Dannii Minogue was said they sang in tune but they couldn’t keep the timing of the rap. Aw, Ms. Minogue you looked really pretty even if they put you through vocal hell.

Contestant Danyl Johnson missed a few lyrics, but overall did a decent job singing “Careless Whisper” and he has some very earnest eyes that carried his performance. At the end of this clip, if you are not familiar with X Factor’s format, you will understand that each judge gets to mentor a contestant providing fun banter.

My personal favorite of the bunch was this kid, Joe McElderry who sang “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” –which is actually an Elton John song, later it was a duet with George Michael. Um, funnily enough one of the judges mentioned this, but they didn’t say that for Stacey so the truth is if you are singing well, then the rules don’t apply apparently.

Weihnachtslieder gibt es wie Schneeflocken in einem verschneiten Wintermärchen. Zumal sich in der Vorweihnachtszeit stets Hunderte von Künstlern aus allen Musiksparten dazu berufen fühlen, “Jingle Bells” und “Stille Nacht” in ihrer personifizierten Version für die Nachwelt zu verewigen. Doch zwei Titel aus dem Jahre 1984 stehen so sinnbildlich für das neuzeitliche Weihnachtsliedgut, wie keine weiteren und beide behaupteten sich auch die letzten 25 Jahre lang gegen sämtliche Neuerscheinungen: das eine lautet “Last Christmas” von Wham, welches streng genommen noch nicht mal ein Weihnachtslied ist und seit der Veröffentlichung großzügig die Taschen des einstigen Bandmitglieds George Michael füllt; das andere heißt “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?” von Band Aid – ein Hilfsprojekt britischer Pop-Größen für die Hungerhilfe in Äthiopien. In diesem Wortgeflecht… sorry, Notengeflecht geht es um die Hintergründe zu “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?” sowie um deren Initiatoren Bob Geldof und Midge Ure. Und für die Freunde von “Last Christmas” gibt es auch noch ein paar Zuckerl… oder sollte man zu dieser Jahreszeit sagen: Platzerl!?

Die Story hinter “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?”

Kann ein Lied hungernde Bäuche füllen? Zumindest, wenn dieses Lied zum Hit avanciert und man den Erlös zeitnah in Brot verwandelt. Solche Gedanken schmiedet der irische Sänger Bob Geldof wohl in einer schlaflosen Nacht im Oktober 1984, nach dem ihn die schockierenden Bilder einer Fernsehreportage über die Hungersnot in Äthiopien nicht mehr loslassen. Jedoch: so ein Lied mag schnell geschrieben sein, aber wie wäre garantiert, dass es auch wirklich die Hitparaden stürmt – und zwar am Besten weltweit? Die Idee: Man braucht eine echte Hymne und singen soll sie jeder, der in der britischen Pop-Szene Rang und Namen hat, dann ist für jeden Fan auch sicher etwas dabei.

Bob Geldof übernimmt für seinen Einfall sofort die Initiative. Zunächst sucht sich der Ire einen geeigneten Mitstreiter für dieses Projekt, er findet ihn in Midge Ure, dem Hymnen-erprobten Bandleader der Bombast-Waver Ultravox. Die beiden machen sich sofort an die Arbeit, um den Titel “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time” zu schreiben. Zeitgleich gilt es, möglichst viele Kollegen für dieses Projekt zu begeistern, damit diese dann dem Hilfsprojekt ihre Stimme schenken.

Am 25. November 1984 versammeln sich all diese Stars im SARM-Studio in Notting Hill (London) und spielen unter der Produktion von Midge Ure und Trevor Horn (Produzent u. a. von Robbie Williams, Spandau Ballet, Genesis uvm.) an nur einem einzigen Tag den Titel “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?” ein. Auf den Markt kommt die Single dann am 10. Dezember 1984 und gilt bis heute mit 800.000 verkauften Stück innerhalb einer Woche allein in Großbritannien als die schnellstverkaufteste Single der Musikgeschichte. Selbstredend, dass der Weihnachts-Hit sofort die Spitze der Charts im vereinigten Königreich erklimmt, dies gelingt “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?” noch in zwölf weiteren Ländern, darunter auch in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz. Insgesamt soll allein die Single einen Reinerlös von rund 12 Millionen Euro eingespielt haben. Doch motiviert von diesem phänomenalen Erfolg wird Bob Geldof am 13. Juli 1985 noch eins draufsetzen und das weltumspannende Mammut-Konzert “Live Aid” organisieren – mehr Infos dazu findet Ihr auch in der 420 Jahre Tonträger-Geschichte Teil 2.

Unterdessen ist das britische Hilfs-Projekt eine Initialzündung für Pop- und Rockgrößen vieler weiterer Länder, die daraufhin ebenfalls ein akustisches Hilfspaket für Afrika schnüren, darunter die USA mit “USA for Africa – We are the World”, Deutschland mit “Band für Afrika – Nackt im Wind” und Österreich mit “Austria für Afrika – Kinder”. Anno 1989 und 2004 holen Bob Geldof und Midge Ure das Band-Aid-Projekt unter den Namen “Band Aid II” und “Band Aid 20″ (zum 20-jährigen Jubiläum) nochmals aus der Schublade, um es teils mit Wiederholungstätern der ersten Formation als auch mit neuen Superstars wie etwa Robbie Williams, Katie Melua, Snow Patrol, den Sugarbabes oder Chris Martin von Coldplay erneut gegen den Hunger in Afrika einzuspielen. Abgesehen von Großbritannien können die Neuauflagen aber nicht mehr an die Erfolge des Originals anknüpfen und auch im Radio und auf praktisch jedem Christmas-Rock-Sampler findet sich stets die Urversion von 1984 wieder. Möge sie uns noch durch viele Weihnachtsfeste musikalisch begleiten!

Kurzbiographie von Bob Geldof

Der irische Rock-Musiker Bob Geldof heißt mit richtigem Namen Robert Frederick Zenon Geldof. Der am 5. Oktober 1951 in Dún Laoghaire (Irland) geborene Junge muss bereits 1959 den Tod seiner Mutter hinnehmen. Seine ältere Schwester schickt ihn schließlich auf das katholische Internat “Blackrock College”. Als sich Bob Geldof mit 18 aus dem Internat verabschiedet, schlägt er sich unter anderem als Englisch-Lehrer, Lastwagenfahrer und Straßensänger durch. Schließlich verdient Geldof bald sein Geld als Journalist für diverse Musikmagazine, wo er erstmals auf Stars wie Elton John oder Little Richard trifft. 1975 schließlich will er endlich selbst Musik machen und gründet in Dublin die Band “The Nightlife Thugs” – stilistisch ausgelegt auf Rythm and Blues. Inspiriert durch die Mitte der 1970er Jahre aufkommende Punkszene orientiert sich die Band neu, siedelt schließlich nach England über und benennt sich um in “The Boomtown Rats”.

Abgesehen von der Insel schaffen es die Boomtown Rats eigentlich nur auf zwei nennenswerte Hits: die Arbeitnehmer-Hymne “I don’t like Mondays” (von 1979, eigentlich ein Lied über einen real passierten Amok-Lauf) sowie den Reggae-Song “Banana Republic”.

Ab 1986 geht Bob Geldof dann eigene Wege ohne seine Ratten. Solo veröffentlicht er zwischen 1986 und heute sechs Alben, wobei es kein einziges in irgendeinem Land in die Top 10 schafft. Bob Geldofs größter Hit würde aber ohnehin sein soziales Engagement gegen Hunger und Ungerechtigkeit bleiben. Nach Band Aid und Live Aid organisiert er 1989 Band Aid II sowie 2004 Band Aid 20. Außerdem kämpft er seit den 1990ern zusammen mit Bono von U2 für den Schuldenerlass von Drittwelt-Ländern. Im Jahre 2005 organisiert er als vorläufigen Höhepunkt das Live-8-Konzert: ein Live-Spektakel am 2. Juli an zehn Orten gleichzeitig als größte Musik-Party der Welt – mehr dazu findet Ihr auch in der Geschichte des Tonträgers Teil 2. In Folge dessen schlägt Königin Elisabeth II. den Iren Bob Geldof  sogar zum Ritter, auch wenn er den Titel “Sir” als Ire offiziell nicht verwenden darf.

Midge Ure: Bandleader der Gruppe Ultravox und der wahrscheinlich genialste Musiker der 1980er

Midge Ure, der geniale Gitarrist, begnadete Songschreiber und Sänger mit der einprägsamen Stimme ist der wahrscheinlich überragendste Musiker der 1980er. Als Bandleader der Formation Ultravox führt Midge von 1979 bis 1987 die bedeutendste Gruppe der New-Wave-Szene an, welche wiederum den 80ern ihren unverwechselbaren Stempel aufdrückte. Zu den wichtigsten Hits zählen unter anderem “Vienna”, “Passing Strangers”, “All stood still”, “The Voice”, “The Thin Wall”, “Hymn”, “Monument”, “We came to dance”, “Reap the wild Wind”, “Visions in Blue”, “Lament”, “Dancing with Tears in my Eyes”, “One small Day”, “Heart of the Country”, “Man of two Worlds”, “Love’s great Adventure”, “Same old Storys” und “All fall down”… und das sind nur die Hits mit Ultravox! Solo und in anderen Projekten zählen zu Midge Ure’s Hit-Vita unter anderem noch “Fade to Grey” (mit Visage) sowie “If i was”, “That certain Smile”, “Just for you”, “Dear God”, “Sister and Brother” (Duett mit Kate Bush), “Cold, cold Heart”, “Breathe” oder “Move me”. Man könnte die Liste an Top-Liedern aus seiner Feder noch endlos weiterführen, doch soll dies erst einmal als Beweis für seinen hohen Stellenwert in der Musikszene genügen – klingt leicht nach Fan-Aussage, aber das musste an dieser Stelle jetzt einfach mal gesagt werden!!!

Zur Welt kommt Midge Ure als James Ure am 10. Oktober 1953 in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire in Schottland. Seine Kindheit verbringt James in einem Vorort von Glasgow. Mit zehn Jahren bekommt er von seinen Eltern eine gebrauchte “Fender Stratocaster” geschenkt, eine Gitarre mit echtem Kultfaktor. Zwar macht James Ure noch eine Lehre als Schlosser, doch am liebsten spielt er eigentlich mit seiner Gitarre, so dass er die Ausbildung mit 19 abbricht, um sich vollends der Musik zu widmen.

James Ure’s offizielle Musikkarriere beginnt ab 1972 bei Bands mit zum Teil recht unterschiedlichen stilistischen Ausrichtungen. Unter anderem spielt er als Sänger und Gitarrist der Teenpopgruppe Silk, wo er wegen einer Namensgleichheit auch seinen Namen James in Midge ändert. Mit Silk schafft er 1976 das Kunststück, mit dem Titel “Forever and ever” den ABBA-Song “Mamma Mia” von Platz 1 der Hitparaden zu verdrängen. Weitere Stationen sind in den 1970ern außerdem die Bombastpopper “The Rich Kids” sowie ein Gastspiel bei der befreundeten Hardrockformation “Thin Lizzy”, als Midge Ure den abwanderungswilligen Gitarristen Gary Moore für eine Tournee und eine Plattenaufnahme vertritt. Mit dessen Band-Leader Phil Lynott zusammen schreibt Midge Ure 1980 außerdem das Stück “Yellow Pearl”, das für viele Jahre die Erkennungsmelodie für die englische TV-Popsendung “Top of the Pops” darstellt.

Anno 1979 kreuzen sich die Wege von Midge Ure mit den Bandmitgliedern der Punkgruppe Ultravox. Dessen bisheriger Sänger John Foxx verließ die Truppe, um Soloprojekte zu verwirklichen, zumal Ultravox zu dieser Zeit ohne Geld und ohne Plattenvertrag dasteht. Midge Ure verpasst Ultravox einen neuen akustischen Anstrich aus Synthesizern und Gitarrenriffs. Nebenbei wirkt er zusammen mit seinem Ultravox-Kollegen Bill Currie noch bei der Popformation Visage mit und schreibt dort unter anderem “Fade to Grey”, der international zu einem absoluten Top-Hit avanciert.

Für Midge Ure und Ultravox ein absoluter Glücksfall, da sie aus den Einnahmen mit Visage die Gruppe Ultravox weiter finanzieren können. Die Durststrecke für Ultravox endet Mitte 1980 mit dem Album “Vienna” und der gleichnamigen Single. Was folgt, ist eine sechsjährige Erfolgsgeschichte mit zahlreichen Top-Hits wie zum Beispiel “The Voice”, “Hymn” oder “Dancing with Tears in my Eyes” (siehe auch oben).

Bereits während seiner aktiven Zeit bei Ultravox beginnt Midge Ure flügge zu werden. Nach dem Band-Aid-Projekt anno 1984 und dem Welthit “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?” zusammen mit Bob Geldof konzentriert sich Midge Ure im Folgejahr hauptsächlich auf seine Solokarriere. Ultravox-Fans trösten sich mit dem gemeinsamen Auftritt bei Live Aid, einem Best-Of-Album mit der Single-Auskopplung “Love’s Great Adventure” und dem genialen Solo-Album “The Gift” von Midge Ure. Mit der ersten Single des Albums “If I Was” gelingt zudem, was ihm mit Ultravox immer haarscharf verwehrt blieb – ein Nummer-1-Hit in den Charts. Dieses Kunststück glückt ihm erst wieder 1998 mit dem Titel “Breathe”, der mit kräftiger Unterstützung der Swatch-Uhr-Werbung in Italien und Österreich die Spitzenplätze erklimmt. Zwischen 1985 und heute spielte Midge Ure insgesamt sechs Alben sowie diverse Best-Ofs, Live-Aufnahmen und sogar einen Soundtrack (Went to Coney Island) ein. Für sein soziales Engagement und seine Verdienste um die Afrikahilfe erhebt Königin Elisabeth II. Midge Ure in den Adelsstand und ernennt ihn zum “Officer of the Order of the British Empire”.

Auf seinem letzten Album “10″ von 2008 covert Midge Ure ältere Lieder, die ihm persönlich sehr am Herzen liegen – eine für den Fan ungewohnte aber recht interessante CD. Derzeit tourt Midge Ure mit der Ultravox-Originalbesetzung der 1980er durch ganz Europa. Ob daraus mal mehr wird oder gar ein neues Ultravox-Album entspringt, steht noch in den Sternen – aber man soll die Hoffnung ja nie aufgeben!

Lloyd – Faith – The exciting news is that Lloyd has had a bit of a haircut.  The unexciting news is that his singing is as ropey as ever.   It’s not that he’s got a bad voice, as such, he’s just really patchy.  I suppose that you have to remember that he’s only 16.  There’s no George Michael masterclass, so the theme seems a bit OTT.

Louis is wearing a ridiculous bow-tie, and so it really suited him.  The crowd went wild because Simon described the performance as ‘not bad’.  Is this the level that we’ve sunk to?

Stacey – Don’t know – They had her sat down to start the performance whilst wearing a very short dress – quite brave.  The song was really boring, whatever it was.   It would have been quite a good performance but there were one or two dodgy bits in it.  She’s still a lovable gonk though.

The crowd seemed to be suffering from mass hysteria; I wonder what they feed to them before it starts.  Stacey looks really bashful when she gets praise, which is quite endearing.  People will probably think that she was putting it on, though.

John and Edward – I’m Your Man – This was a relatively subdued performance from the twins as they cavorted around on a 20-foot high scaffold.  They were definitely back in the absolutely rubbish category, but at least they aren’t boring.  Simon described them as an “unstoppable machine” – a truly frightening thought.

Danyl – Careless Whisper – I don’t really know what I thought about it.  He’s on a different level to the other acts and so it’s difficult to really judge him.  Cheryl said that parts of it were really flat – she gets in her weekly Danyl dig – good girl.

Olly – Fast Love – Another one of the acts with dodgy bits.  I think I’m going to have to accept that I just don’t like him, even if it’s really unfair.  His stupid dancing was quite subdued, which was a shame.  Overall, I thought it was pretty bad, he seems to be getting worse if anything.  Danni said that there were tuning problems in the first half of the song.  I’m glad it wasn’t just me that thought so.

Joe – Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me – Simon did a great appreciative nod towards the beginning of the song.  Joe’s not really my cup of tea but he’s certainly consistent each week, and that’s more than you can say for the others.

We’ve got to the stage in the competition where Louis loves everybody.  He did manage to to open his rule book and have a go about it being an Elton John song and not a George Michael one.  Simon managed to take credit for the performance, as he always does.

The main show seemed to fly by tonight, so my comments seem to be a lot shorter than usual.  Could The Xtra Factor help me pad it out any?  Well, Joan Collins was in the audience looking like a leopard-skin scarecrow.  It was quite scary so I just focused on Holly and I felt instantly soothed.

Up in the studio with the judges and Cheryl was wearing a ridiculously short dress to be sat on a stool.  The stylists appeared to be going for the upskirt factor.

Someone asked Louis why he has to be childish whenever he’s being criticised, he said ‘because that’s what I’m like.’  Which was a good answer, to be fair.  Someone else slagged off Simon’s song choices for Danyl.  Another guy suggested that Louis has had a face-lift.  Gina phoned up and nastily accused Cheryl of favouring Joe over Lloyd.  God, I love Britain.

The group song was Wake Me Up Before You Go Go.  Like always, it was hideous.

Skipping through a lot of rubbish (Susan Boyle and Mariah Carey), it boiled down to John & Edward and Olly in the final two.

Jedward sang Boyzone’s No Matter What, the first time in the competition that they’ve actually ’sung’.  It really showed just how bad they are.

Olly sang a song (I knew what it was but I’ve already forgotten what it was) and was distinctly average.  Sadly, ‘distinctly average’ is too much for Jedward to contend with.

It was pretty obvious who was going to go, but I found myself praying that the twins would survive.  Sadly they didn’t.

In conclusion

It’s quite incredible that Lloyd wasn’t in the bottom two, maybe people are voting because they feel sorry for him.  Jedward are finally gone – they were absolutely rubbish singers, but the show is going to be a lot more boring without them.  There’s no one left that I’m really rooting for – a sorry state of affairs.

Diciembre es el último mes del año, llegan las navidades y todos estamos de celebración. Celebramos una despedida, la del año que muere para dar paso a un nuevo periodo de esperanzas e ilusiones. Sin embargo, igual que unos mueren, otros nacen y este mes no solo vamos a despedirnos de grandes cosas, sino que vamos a dar la bienvenida a muchos proyectos que vuelven a casa por Navidad.

Comencemos con el repaso por la música que se lanzarán en Diciembre (probablemente, alguno encuentre un lugar en los zapatos del día 6 de Enero).

1. Rolling Stones. Conmemorando el 40 aniversario de los conciertos que el grupo ofreció en noviembre de 1969 en el Madison Square Garden de Nueva York, Abkco y Universal publican “Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! The Rolling Stones In Concert  – 40 Aniversario Deluxe Box Set” y “Super Deluxe Box Set” el 1 de diciembre.

2. Alicia Keys. Con 12 Grammys en su vientre, “The element of Freedom” llega el 15 de diciembre. Un disco que se lanza con dos semanas de retraso ya que la artista ha querido incluir nuevas canciones que estaba terminando de componer.

3. Thalía. Tras una mala época para la artista, llega“Primera Fila” (“Front Row”). Un disco compuesto por 13 canciones que tiene previsto ver la luz el 10 de Diciembre. Ya conoces algunas canciones de este nuevo trabajo como “Equivocada”.

4. Julian Casablanca. El 18 de diciembre, el cantante de los Strokes lanzará una edición de lujo de su disco debut, “Phrazes for the Young”, una caja de diseño antiguo que contiene un CD con el álbum, otro con maquetas y caras B, un DVD con interpretaciones en acústico. Además, lanza el 21 de Diciembre una edición limitada de un single navideño que contendrá una versión de ‘SNL’ (un villancico cómico del programa televisivo “Saturday Night Live”).

5. Nino Bravo. Cerca de cumplirse los 40 años del fallecimiento del cantante, los mejores artistas del pop español se reúnen para hacerle un homenaje en “El homenaje definitivo” que saldrá a la venta el 1 de Diciembre.

6. George Michael. El próximo 13 de diciembre lanzará al mercado su canción navideña “December Song” (la que el año pasado era gratis en la red, ahora se prepara para soporte físico). Además, lanza su primer DVD en vivo el 7 de diciembre “Live In London” que tendrá 23 canciones grabadas durante conciertos en el Earls Court Arena de Londres.

7. Neil Young. “Dreamin’ Man’ – Live ‘92” debió salir en Noviembre, pero el lanzamiento se ha visto retrasado al 8 de Diciembre. Este trabajo es la nueva entrega de los  “Archives Performance Series” de Neil Young y  fue un álbum grabado en 1992 durante la gira de presentación de “Harvest Moon”.

8. Fangoria. “Completamente” es la reedición de “Absolutamente” en el que encontraremos colaboraciones como la de Sara Montiel en la canción que lleva el mismo nombre del álbum anterior.

9. Los Beatles. Por fin llegan en formato digital para PC y Mac. El 7 de diciembre se podrá adquirir una memoria USB de 16 GB con la edición remasterizada de su discografía. En él encontrarás las versiones estéreo de los álbumes, 13 minidocumentales (incluidos también en la edición CD), los diseños de cubiertas originales, textos y fotografías.

10. Pet Shop Boys. Cinco canciones saldrán el próximo día 14 de diciembre en un EP que se llamará “Christmas”. Incluye nuevas versiones de “It Doesn’t Often Snow At Christmas”, “All Over The World” y “My Girl”. Estará disponible en formato físico y en descarga digital.

And to prove her point she flashed her £160,000 wedding ring on Twitter with the message: “3 Words. Diamonds are forever.”

Defiant X Factor star Cheryl told friends she and Chelsea winger Ashley have “never been happier”.

The 26-year-old added: “Everything is just fine, and I feel really, really content right now.”

Cheryl spoke out amid rumours their relationship was on the rocks, after Ashley, 28, allegedly cheated on his wife last year.

The footballer was recently injured and the couple have grown even closer in the past few weeks as she helped him get back on his feet.

A source close to the singer said: “Cheryl has been nursing her man better. The pair dote on each other. They are more in love than ever before.

“She loves it that Ashley is there to support her at X Factor and every step of the way with her solo career too.

“While he has been injured they have been spending loads of time together. They’re as close as ever.”

Cheryl was delighted after Ashley came to support her during the Children In Need gig last week, where she performed a duet with Snow Patrol of Set The Fire To The Third Bar.

An insider said: “She was so nervous to be singing in front of music legends Sir Paul McCartney and Dame Shirley Bassey. But Ashley was there for her.”

Here I am Singing I can’t make you love me By George Michael, it’s a great song. When I auditioned for American Idol I use this song, because the lyrics in the song speaks for it’s self. (I can’t make you love me if you don’t, you can’t make your heart feel something that it won’t) I never thought in my life time that I would get the chance to stand in front of Paula Simon and Randy it’s an experience that I will never forget, hope you like it.

What do you think of at Christmas? Chestnuts roasting on an open fire? Sweet memories with family? Cider and egg nog? Making snowmen? The birth of the Christ child?

George Michael and someone else think about this time someone broke their heart.

“Last Christmas” embodies so much about Christmas spirit fail. First off, it has a noxious but insistent melody, which makes itself an unwelcome guest in your ears. It has relentlessly syrupy lyrics. And it’s depressing to boot–a song deliberately designed to kill your Christmas cheer.

Its one grace note may be when Wham! whines “I thought you were someone special” on the seemingly endless denouement. (Did I mention that “Last Christmas” clocks in at almost 7 minutes? It feels as though it lasts all the way from last Christmas to this one.)

And because it is so uniquely awful, “Last Christmas” is a top choice for cover artists, including Ashley Tisdale, who seems intent on proving that there’s no tune that the Disney Channel’s subtalented tweens won’t make even worse.

Teary Christmas, everyone.

Hari ini seperti biasa sayah naik busway yang tercinta. Jalur baru di kantor baru. Tak ramai, namun bangku duduk sudah penuh sehingga sayah harus berdiri. Sayah seperti biasa memilih berdiri di tempat favorit, di sisi kiri bus, menempel ke pintu samping. Bersender ke lengan kiri, sementara tangan kanan bergelayutan ke pegangan di langit-langit bus. Sayah menatap ke luar, ke jalanan, sembari menikmati hangatnya matahari. Kedua kuping sayah -seperti biasa juga- tersumpal earphones. Setelah beberapa saat, tiba-tiba seorang perempuan muda menyenggol bahu sayah. Tak sengaja. Mulutnya mengucap sesuatu yang tak terdengar oleh sayah (kuping masih ber-earphones). Yang tampak hanya komat-kamit mulutnya seperti membentuk kata, “Sorry, sorry!” sambil tertawa-tawa. Sayah jadi melirik ke (samping) belakang sayah. Seorang pria muda lah yang membuat perempuan itu tertawa, dan menyenggol bahu saja. Semacam menggelitiki.

Selanjutnya, sayah “waspada” ehm … tentu sayah tak mau tersenggol cuma-cuma (he-he). Kini tanpa perlu melirik, jangkau pandang mata sayah bisa melihat keduanya intim. Ehm, maksud sayah, ekspresi mereka menunjukkan bahwa mereka mempunyai hubungan yang intim. Pacaran. Itu kesan sayah awal. Tapi untuk di tempat umum, rasanya memang terlalu intim.

Seperti peluk-pelukan; deskripsinya: pose si perempuan menyandarkan punggungnya ke dada si pria, pose si pria menciumi lengan si perempuan, pose si pria menggelitiki si perempuan. Sayah tak bisa dan memang tak mau mendengarkan apa yang mereka obrol, tapi sayah yakin pembicaraan seputar keintiman yang mereka miliki. Lha wong si perempuannya sering tersenyum-senyum, begitu pun sebaliknya. Dan tampaknya bukan sayah sendiri yang merasa … risih. Beberapa orang di dalam bus transjakarta itu, sayah perhatikan juga memberi tatapan yang tak biasa/tak suka pada mereka. Ha ha, untuk sekedar laporan sekilas pandangan mata rasanya yang sayah tulis terlalu detail ya.

Yang bisa (dan biasa) kami lakukan hanyalah mencuri-curi kesempatan untuk bisa mengekspresikan hubungan yang kami miliki ketika sedang berada di luar a.k.a. tempat umum. Tak sampai peluk-pelukan. Sometimes I think about how much more content this blog would have if it was more of a collective, with multiple contributers, rather than just me but eh– you wouldn’t get “the full JP experience” (Are you experienced?) this way. Ha. Doesn’t matter now. Here’s another music/video dump: this time — stuff from October that I’ve had on lock for a bit, but haven’t gotten around to posting on here. I’m hoping that you’ll get fresh November content within this month. So here we go. This is my October Isht.

George Michael’s “Freedom ‘90″.
I remember watching this on MTV, and then later on VH1. I remember watching the Pop Up Video episode that this was on. I know every single word, and I can still do a pretty good imitation of Naomi’s dance with combat boots and headphones on.  I pretend to be Cindy Crawford when I crawl out of the shower. I still kinda want Linda Evangelista’s haircut. 4:36-5:35 is my favorite part. Clearly, I can name every single supermodel in this video– god I love this song.

* Wide-on’s been a term that I’ve been borrowing/trying on from Ned of Boner Party. I’m still trying to see if it sticks, and whether or not I like it.

Paper or Plastic
Short of a few phone calls with friends, I had no conversations on Saturday that weren’t transactional. Spending $7 on a takeout dinner doesn’t count as “human contact” in my book, any more than letting someone board the bus in front of you counts as “making a friend.” You’re pointing to a menu, handing over a few slips of paper, and waiting until your number gets called. A sophisticated machine could replace one or both of the partners in that dance.

I find that solitude – the ability to immerse myself in a city full of people without having to engage them – refreshing, so long as I take it in small doses. I was out late drinking with coworkers, then dancing at the Middlesex, on Friday night. On Sunday I went to see Lynne D’s one-woman show at ImprovBoston, then had a few beers with friends. Last weekend was busy (Halloween) and the coming weekends look to fill up my diary as well. So the break doesn’t hurt.

But there are thousands of people in this city, and every other, who go like that for a week at a time or more. Get up, get on the bus, punch a clock, take your break, punch out, bus home, watch TV, drink, sleep, repeat. The city does not discourage this lifestyle. Dozens of institutions exist to make such a life of populated solitude possible – even easy.

The Wasted Chance That I’ve Been Given
Pop music has not lacked for shitty covers ever, so if I wanted to bitch about that I’d have my choice of targets. But lately I’ve heard enough covers that defy sense, aesthetics or any prediction of What The Market Demands.

Exhibit A: “Careless Whisper” by Seether

That’s what George Michael’s slow-jazz throwback from twenty-five years ago needed – a groan-rock cover with extra shredding. In the original, the sublimely ridiculous line “guilty feet have got no rhythm” makes some sense – the tidal wave of horns and congo drums suggest a nightclub in the 40s, slow dancing with your best friend’s girl, etc. It calls to mind the silver screen. But no one would dream of dancing to a song by a band named Seether, unless standing with your feet shoulder-width apart and headbanging counts as “dancing.” It’s fun, but it doesn’t.

Exhibit B: “More Than Words” by Owen

At least Seether’s cover of a George Michael standard justifies itself by changing the song’s genre. Translating Wham! to screamo is a poor choice, sure, but it’s evidence of thought. But Mike Kinsella’s cover of “More Than Words” adds nothing. It’s one guy with an acoustic guitar, as opposed to the original, which had two guys – Gary Cherone singing, Nuno Bettancourt playing and harmonizing. It has the artistic integrity of a webcam video posted to YouTube, except the fact that I’m asked to spend $0.99 on Kinsella’s version makes it comical.

Avvertenza: questo è un post interattivo. Scegliete, dunque, voi la rima che meglio vi piace. E scegliete voi cosa pensare di Charlie Rapino, che dall’alto della sua “altezza” si diverte a prendere a pesci in faccia chiunque non rientri nelle sue simpatie. Il metodo è quello di Emilio Fede quando storpia il nome degli avversari, fingendo di non conoscerli. La durezza è inusitata, tanto da apparire segno di debolezza di spirito.

Oggi, durante la puntata delle arlecchinate, mentre la De Filippi s’è pure divertita con il siparietto da scuola elementare Garofalo – Celentano, tanto che perfino Garrison è sembrato quasi adulto (ho detto quasi), è andato in scena ancora una volta il Rapin-pensiero, che ha dispensato elogi e critiche sulla base di giudizi solo personalistici, senza alcun legame con la realtà dei fatti.

Per cui, quando Stefanino gli s’è rivolto in modo scanzonato, ma non maleducato, vedendo incrinata la sua autorità, sostenuta sul nulla pneumatico della sua finta docenza, surrogata grazie al Cielo dal maestro Perris, che in pratica lo sostituisce costantemente (visto che il Charlie si vede dalle parti di Cinecittà due volte a settimana, mica le quattro che si pretendevano da Luca Jurman, ovviamente), Rapinoman si inalberava, chiedendosi com’era possibile che un paria lo toccasse. Nella musica che si vede, infatti, ci sono le caste e Carletto bello è un sacerdote induista, o una mucca – fate voi. E’ comunque e sempre sacerrimo.

Stefanino lo guardava con un sorriso tranquillo, per nulla emozionato: sosteneva lo sguardo incavolato del professore indiavolato e lo sfidava. Arrivava a chiedere perfino che il Rapino diventasse suo insegnante per un giorno (in realtà, voleva fare a cambio per una settimana, ma ciò significa, in effetti, lavorare solo con Perris). Poi, finiva, tanto per zittire l’incolore William, che da quando ha vinto un inedito pensa d’essere il nuovo George Michael (per quello era più adatto il bravo Denis), a domandare una sfida interna.

Charlie, a quel punto, diventava verde, ma verde tipo la Grazia davanti a Valerio quando veniva smentita dalla realtà. Poverino, faceva quasi pena: menava fendenti da una parte e dall’altra. Colpiva fino la Di Michele, che restava basita (beh, non ci riusciva altrettanto bene che Jurman, però) e che guardava ebete (non riesce a fare altro visto il botox che s’è iniettato) la Martinez.

Poi, tirava fuori la solita polemica anti-comunista: ma che vuole fare lo Stefanino, l’autogestione? E intanto la De Filippi interveniva per dirgli che sì, a lei l’autogestione piace.

E così, con una mossa da veterofascista, Rapinoman, vestito di nero, come vuole la mamma, non solo faceva passare Stefanino come un simpaticone, ma perfino dimostrava al mondo intero che mai aveva visto una puntata di “Amici” nelle nove edizioni precedenti.

Evviva, evviva. Comunque vada, sarà un successo.

• Alle matretter som inneholdt ananas het noe med Hawaii.
• Den heftigste forretten var rekecocktail og den flotteste desserten glace au four.

• Vi kunne ikke hoppe på gulvet når vi hørte på musikk, da ble det hakk i platene.
• Det fantes et spesielt møbel hvor platespilleren sto, den ble kallt stereobenken.
• Vi meldte oss inn i bokklubber, musikklubber og vi samlet på uttallige kort og bilder av popstjerner og idrettshelter.
• Det hvite mirakelet Tippex var den eneste måten å rette opp en skrivefeil på.
• Tights og stor t-skjorte var en helt naturlig kombinasjon.
• De aller fineste plakatene/bildene vi hadde på veggene var sportsdoler og favoritt-artister.

• Vi gikk på aerobic med stringtruse utenpå gymdrakten, og leggingser i tillegg, og syntes det var helt naturlig.
• “Jeg skriver ut en sjekk” var en helt vanlig replikk.
• Fastfood var det samme som grilllpølse med rekesalat.
• Joggedress var ikke joggedress uten amerikasokker rullet ned utenpå, eller buksen brettet opp.

Me & Cardboard George.

It’ll be no surprise to anyone who knows me I’m writing about my beloved George Michael. It’s been a life long love affair with his music, jumping on planes to see him and spending way too much babysitting money back in the day on all things Wham! and George Michael.

All the wheels are in motion for George to deliver a Live DVD of his tour Twenty Five Live entitled ‘Live In London’ and includes 23 songs. A tour, that allowed me to live out a fantasy seeing George at one of the sold out Earl’s Court shows in London as a VIP, talk Wham! with people who were part of the crew then and now, drink wine that George drinks. But, I digress…. He will go ‘head to head’ with finalists on ‘X-Factor’ (he will sooooooo win.) But now GM is releasing “December Song” which he gave away for free on his website “Last Christmas” (oh yes, that is a Wham! reference reader. You are too smart!)

December Song ‘08 vs. December Song ‘09

December Song ‘08 is typical old school George fanfare – mention of Jesus, needing forgiveness and a voice as smooth as butter. Being a December baby, I love that George put out a song about Christmas. Sonically it has elements that remind me of  ”Kissing A Fool” during the opening chords and for a reason I can’t pinpoint, “A Different Corner” though obviously less moody.

December Song ‘09 What’s the difference between the free single last year and this year’s version? Remastering. Who needs remastering after a year? It sounds fine as it is. George seriously, I know you had a busy year popping up doing duets with people like Beyonce and setting up this album but you really didn’t have time to record another single?

I want to know if this is because of the love-hate relationship George has with Sony. Is this the last record on his contract? They weren’t too supportive of his last couple of releases even though Wham! and George remain, to this day in the top 50 all-time top sellers for Sony (100 million albums, seriously you forgot George Michael was the soundtrack to your life didn’t you!? ) Think about your fans. Seriously.

Winner: December ‘09

What? without even having heard it you say? Yes, there a pile of press on this already. George’s main, old school fanbase is now 30-50 year old women who still buy physical product if presented the right way. The ‘08 version was available free for one day. A quick survey amongst gay fans in LA and NY (10 people) last year, because this is how much of a fan I am, said they weren’t loving it if they even bothered to download it on Christmas Day. Hello, to me that is a fantastic Christmas Present. Thank you George!

¿Qué debo hacer? ¿Seguir adelante con esta locura insana que me desgarra y me destroza? ¿Mantener la dignidad del ego, la firmeza del orgullo herido? ¿O escuchar al corazón que retumba una y otra vez por tu nombre; saciar de locura unos poros secos de tu sudor; calmar el temblor de mi boca que, ansiosa, busca la estación de tus besos? No lo sé…

Sólo sé que esta noche estoy tan lejos de ti y tan lejos de mí que no sé dónde me encuentro, y que sólo tu recuerdo parece justificarme y atempera el frío inmenso de mi interior, y parece calmar las aguas agrietadas de mi alma y me llama, una y otra vez, a intentarlo de nuevo, a volverte a amar (¿cuándo he dejado de amarte?), a probar otra vez, a confiar nuevamente, a esperar sin vanidad, a comprender sin esperar, a sentir reciprocidad, a aceptar que no somos la reencarnación de nuestros sueños, y que todos cometemos errores: hasta tú y yo… Y a quizá, sólo tal vez, intentarlo una vez más.
