I was reading the March 2011 issue of Relix Magazine last night when I noticed that the 7 Walkers, Bill Kreutzmann‘s new band had placed at #1 on the Jambands.com Radio Chart. This took me pleasantly by surprise so I investigated the band and the situation further. Sure enough they sound rhythmically righteous. 7 Walkers has held the top spot on Jambands.com’s Radio Chart for three solid months now.

I think you’ll find their music infectious and I hope you’ll do as I did, buy their music

Born the day after Christmas in 1947, George Porter, Jr. is one of the forefathers of funk. Devoting his musical career to giving gifts of groove like the performance he and his “Runnin’ Pardners” gave to Vinyl Music Hall on a soulful February night.

Opening act for the Louisiana born legend was local musician Brooks Hubbert. Having recently graced the Vinyl Music Hall stage as the supporting act for Chris Thomas King, Hubbert opened up his arsenal of talent this night and displayed his unique touch on pop classics and sharing original compositions.

Following Hubbert’s performance, George Porter, Jr. and The Runnin’ Pardners took over the show and shook hands with the people in the crowd before laying down their rich brand of old school funk n’ soul on the crowd. With a performance so rhythmic, audience members were quickly moved to find a dance “pardner” or cut a solo groove of their own. Acknowledging their Mardi Gras induced party, the group heated up the venue so intensely that they performed two sets for the audience to dance the night away.

As videos continue to surface from Jam Cruise9, we find Taylor Hicks sitting in with many of the musicians on great songs like “Standing on Shaky Ground” and “Love the One You’re With.” This one is a little different – a slow jam with Maceo Parker, Stanton Moore, George Porter Jr, Robert Walters and Erik Krasno.

Panama City Beach – Only four more concerts scheduled as part of the Pier Park summer concert series 2010 – so be sure to catch tonight’s fantastic show! George Porter Jr is New Orleans’ premier bass player, and has performed with artists such as Paul McCartney, Jimmy Buffett, David Byrne, Patti LaBelle, Robbie Robertson and Tori Amos.

Legendary drummer and co-founder of the Grateful Dead , Bill Kreutzmann , together with funky bluesman and voodoo electronic pioneer Papa Mali are on the road as the 7 Walkers . 7 Walkers , which also features multi-instrumentalist Matt Hubbard (Willie Nelson and Friends), and legendary bassist George Porter Jr. (Funky Meters) and will stop at select markets and festivals through out the country, all in anticipation of a new album release. The complete list of currently confirmed 7 Walkers tour dates is included below.

Bill Kreutzmann also tours select dates this summer with his Grateful Dead partner Mickey Hart in the Rhythm Devils . Over the years, Kreutzmann and Hart have transcended rock and roll drum stereotypes with polyrhythmic explorations of the world of percussion, using an extraordinary variety of instruments and approaches. The aftermath of this collaboration was the larger Rhythm Devils, which have made periodic reappearances over the years. The lineup for this July 2010 tour includes Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, Keller Williams (guitar, vocals), Davy Knowles (guitar, vocals), Sikiru Adepoju (talking drum), and Andy Hess (bass). 7 Walkers recently spent time at an Austin, Texas studio, recording an album to be released later this year. In addition to a brand-new batch of Robert Hunter (Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan lyricist) originals that were co-written with the band, the new album offers up favorites from the Grateful Dead repertoire, Papa Mali originals, and some New Orleans and Southern songbook interpretations. Overall, the result is a fiery and funky collection of tunes that quite brilliantly capture the unique collaboration between these two very different musical shamans.

Bill Kreutzmann (who played every show in the Grateful Dead’s illustrious 30 year career as well as The Dead incarnations since) first met funky Papa Mali at a festival in 2008. Bill recalls in a recent interview, “We first met at the Oregon Country Fair last year. He was the headliner on the main stage, and I sat there and watched him and went, ‘This guy’s for real man, I like this guy.’ Then we met, after that he came over to my trailer that I was staying in and you couldn’t separate us, we talked for hours. It was just one of those natural things, you know? You can’t plan it; You can’t make it happen. And then we started playing together.”

Few bass players in the history of modern New Orleans music are as storied as George Porter Jr. During the course of a career spanning four decades, Porter has not only made a deep impression with his work in the Meters, but he’s notched sessions with artists as diverse as Paul McCartney, Jimmy Buffett, David Byrne, Patti LaBelle, Robbie Robertson and Tori Amos.

Early in his career, Porter worked with seminal New Orleans artists like Allen Toussaint, Earl King, Lee Dorsey, and Johnny Adams. Back in 1965, Porter joined on with the Meters, considered by many to be the ultimate fusion of rock, funk and R&B, and gained recognition as one of the scene’s elite bass players.

Porter’s rhythmic work in the Meters in lockstep with drummer Zigaboo Modeliste was epic. Those pockets, the long notes and fat holes, provided the cushion for Leo Nocentelli or Art Neville to play or sing over and created some of R&B history’s most memorable grooves.
