To no surprise it was a Marchesa dress from the bridal collection. I’ve always loved Marchesa’s dresses and she rocked the dress even when it was created for a blushing bride. Though I would’ve paired the outfit with more interesting shoes,  she was still a showstopper. It also helped that she is incredibly gorgeous. If only I had a botttomless bank account and endless glamourous events to attend, I would wear Marchesa forever. Mark my words.

Unfortunately, Marchesa’s success sparked controversy as co-founder of Marchesa, Georgina Chapman, struggled to prove herself within the fashion industry because of her marital status. Married to mega producer Harvey Weinstein, press publicized that actresses only wore Chapman’s frocks to seal movie deals with Weinstein. Lucky for Chapman, cream always rises to the top, and so she did with her intricate and stunning dresses. In fact, her dresses became more and more breathtaking each season. A woman I greatly admire for her tenacity and creativity.

The dress is crazily beautiful and usually Lily Cole looks fierce. In this occasion, her hair looks unkempt and she has a weird expression going on. Seriously. I HATE celebrities who look sullen in a red carpet. Hello, you are wearing an expensive gown, with photographers dying to take your pictures and they will be splashed everywhere. Can’t you manage a little smile a?! I am so tired of the whole I’m-too-cool-for-this look. It’s dated, we want beautiful, genetically-blessed stars to be smiling and gracious and accepts their gifts from Heaven.

To say the show was mind-bogglingly gorgeous and awe-inspiring or that Georgina Chapman was so stunning and sweet or that the place was crawling with some of TV’s hottest stars would be a gross understatement. Models teetered on 5-inch Loubs in concoctions of creamy satin, sexy lace and frothy organza. A few clutched pieces from Marchesa’s new evening bag line, while others displayed some major fling (finger bling). Swirling the pin-thin legs of some were handpainted tights which gave the illusion of an intricate tattoo job. The hair by Frederic Fekkai was slick and the lashes were feathered…literally.

I was obsessed with the HighEnd color palette of inky black and creamy white with pops of hot pink and purple and tinges of gold. The gowns were so “knock your socks off,” I swear they could walk themselves down any red carpet. But there were plenty of stars on hand to accompany these dynamo dresses, including the somehow lovelier in person Emmanuelle Chriqui. I literally lol’d when she confessed that she was “freaking out” from the beauty of the show.

My fave aspect of the presentation was the feeling of unabashed opulence and glamour. The duchesse satin reeked (in the best possible way) of Old Hollywood richness. Oversized obi bows and oragami folds thoughtfully adorned both jackets and frocks. One of the Marchesa clutches were topped off with a hunk of beautiful crystal. O, and did I mention a few of the Louboutins were uber-chichi snake-skin? I’m talking straight glamour, HighEnders!

One look was so beautiful, I declared then and there it would be my wedding ‘fit. Ok, so maybe a jacket and short-shorts aren’t standard wedding fare, but as we learned last fashion week, “The Chic certainly must go on.” And Marchesa’s S/S line brimming with luxuriousness made possible by the sartorial genius of Georgina and Karen definitely brought that statement to life.

Marchesa first started hitting our radar a couple years ago. Ever since, designer Georgina Chapman has kept our attention ever since. Season after season she produces great dresses for special occasions and evening. In this collection there is one great blazer that we hope will jump start Chapman to create some more separates, because we know that would triple her business.

This season Georgina said her inspiration was “Madame Butterfly”, but it looks more like lilies and tattoos. Her use of dimension in her work makes so many of the pieces just as easily classified as sculpture. Take a look at some of her most successful pieces.

If we could remove one look from her presentation it would be this last one. The techniques used are stunning, but the overall look is awkward. It’s not quite floor length and the bodice looks like an ice skating outfit. This one needed a little more work before showing.

Marchesa’s s/s 2010 collection was, as per usual, full of beautiful dresses and gowns. While I tend to like more of Georgina Chapman’s (designer for Marchesa) more classic designs, I still found this years collection to be quite lovely. Some dresses were fluid and graceful, evoking a grecian goddess look, while others were stiffly structured like oragami.  I can already see some of these looks at awards shows. From Mischa Barton to Kate Winslet, Marchesa has nailed the red carpet look yet again.

Call me uncompromising, but the NYC spring runways left a lot to be desired. As ALT would say, “It was an absolute famine of beauty.” I’ve really only blogged on the collections that struck my sartorial chord, and as you can see, they’re sparse. However, Marchesa knocked it out of the tents with some of the most inventively decadent gowns known to (wo)man. And the spread was so diverse I could do the flamenco in one, get hitched in another, or simply cocktail it up at any celebration of life!

Mr. Weinstein, you are one lucky, lucky mogul–Georgina is the whole package.

Questa volta le foto non arrivano dal set di Gossip Girl, ma dalle passerelle newyorkesi, dove Blake Lively ha preso parte alla sfilata di Marchesa. Splendida e impeccabile, con un shorts e giacca Marchesa. Non un total look, perchè lei vi ha abbinato dei tronchetti Christian Louboutin. La cosa divertente? Che non è stata l’unica a fare quest’abbinamento, infatti alla sfilata era presente Georgina Chapman, con stessi shorts e stessi ankle boots. E Blake ha anche posato insieme a Becki Newton (di cui avevamo parlato qui), l’attrice di Ugly Betty, in uno splendido abito Marchesa e Christian Louboutin beige.

I’m sure the best playwright of all times, William Shakespeare, will forgive me: I have borrowed a famous verse from his magnificent play The Tempest and applied it to a completely different field, that is fashion. To be precise, I have applied the quote in an uncorrect way, because the verse, uttered by Prospero, hints at the transient state of human lives, which are destined to dissolve into nothing, just like dreams. On the contrary, I have used it to refer to the dream-like quality of Marchesa 2010 spring/summer collection, which include the most amazing and romantic dresses I’ve seen in a while.

Before commenting the outfits, just a word on the setting: the collection was presented, as usual, at the Chelsea Art Museum, and the models, like modern statues or mannequins, stood on pedestals. I am in love with this presentation, because it’s much more effective than a runway. Marchesa dresses are far from being ordinary, so they deserve a special display. According to the fascinating Georgina Chapman, the collection was inspired by Madama Butterfly (and by Japanese culture, I add), but some staples of her style – ruffled tulle, embroideries, dusty colours and feathers – can be found as well.

I’ve tried to find some leit-motifs in the collection, so here they are.

Black lace inserts, a boned bodice and champagne-coloured chiffon for these lovely dresses, one long and one short. The short one has got a ruffled skirt decorated by horsehair.

Elaborate obi-like belts for these outfits. The first is a dress with bell sleeves, made of hand-painted white silk; the second is made of a short embroidered jacket with a fantastic bow belt, paired to simple shorts. The reference to Japanese culture is clear, since the obi is the traditional sash worn on kimonos and yukatas.

Tulle and gold embroideries are the themes which both dresses have in common. The first seems to come out of a fairy-tale book: the skirt is a cloud of white tulle, while the bodice is decorated by gold embroideries and stiff ruffles. The second is a column dress, all embroidered in gold, with stiff ruffles on the bodice and on one shoulder.

In Marchesa’s collections short dresses are not common, but the designers always try to include one or two. This one is amazing: I love the pale aqua colour of the chiffon bands and the gold embroideries.

Nude tulle inserts distinguish these dresses. The first has the same colour as the short one: the bodice is made of embroidered lace, while the skirt is ruffled and pleated, so as to resemble sea foam. The second is made of lilac chiffon and is embroidered with a wisteria motif. Wisteria floribunda (the common wisteria) is a Japanese woody flowering branch, so this is another connection to Japanese culture.

Wisterias are embroidered in white and in lilac on these dresses. One is made of pale lilac silk, is strapless and has a short train, while the other is made of black silk with a tulle overlay, and has a single shoulder topped by a bow.

The traditional Japanese art of paper folding – origami – is surely the primary inspiration behind the white silk decorations on these black dresses.

This dress is peculiar because it combines a Grecian-like quality (the draped skirt), so Marchesa, to the origami art (the multiple fabric decorations on the shoulder).

Chrysantemums have lots of meanings and symbols in Japanese culture, so it’s not a case we find them in embroidery form in this collection. The contrast of black and white is amplified by the floral embroidery. Both dresses also present the theme of the flat ribbon on the bodice.

Tulle long sleeves are the common element for these dresses. The first is embroidered with white chrysantemums on black tulle, the second is all embroidered in metallic gold beads.

I love these dresses! They both have an intricate floral embroidery on tulle bodices and ruffled skirts. The first is truly a work of art: the ruffled long skirt blooms like an exotic flower and is reminiscent of similar effects seen in Giambattista Valli and Hussein Chalayan collections. The second dress is short and has feathers applied on the shoulders and on the skirt.

Kirie is the Japanese art of paper cutting and has probably inspired Marchesa designers for this dramatic dress. The long skirt beautifully ends with stiff folds and is decorated by cut roses; the same decoration is on the bodice. This piece is so precious and original, I wonder who will be the first lucky celebrity to sport it on the red carpet.

While the rest of the collection is all about neutrals, these two dresses are a nice pop of bright fuchsia. The second one has the themes of flat ribbons and folds.

Folded organza ribbons are the incredible decorations for this dream-like dress, whose skirt is made of flat ruffles. I love the pale pink colour, utterly chic.

The uniqueness of the collection was completed by accordingly unique shoes, all creations by Christian Louboutin. We all know the French designer has always worked with Craig and Chapman, so it’s great to see more red-soled shoes here. I’ve always been a fan of Louboutin shoes, but I have to admit this time he has surpassed himself. Most of the shoes have the same theme of the dresses – see the ruffles on the fuchsia sandals, or the embroideries and the flowers on the fuchsia and dove grey satin peep-toe pumps.

When I first saw these booties, my heart stopped. Aren’t they absolutely gorgeous? The overall shape reminds me of the Bridget Strass style, but these are somehow plainer and more sexy. Several versions of the same peep-toe platform booties have been presented – in black or white patent leather, in white snake-like leather, with black or white ankle ribbons. They are perfect if paired to the stunning hand-painted stockings seen on the models.

The gorgeous Olivia Wilde was the first lucky celebrity to wear one of these dresses on the red carpet. She chose the stunning “sea foam” dress to step on the red carpet for the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards, on 20th September 2009. She is so beautiful and this dress gracefully enhances her beauty.

The view of the dress from behind is breathless. I love how the back is completely naked (thanks to an insert of nude tulle), without being tacky. Olivia completed her outfit with simple hairstyle and make-up, diamond earrings and a Marchesa diamantè clutch (from the upcoming bag collection).

It’s hard for me to choose one favourite outfit, but if I had to, I would choose the dress with the exotic-flower ruffled skirt, so romantic and dramatic! What about you?

Anna’s Night Out, popularly known as Fashion’s Night Out, was a smashing success.  Stars, designers, models and shoppers came out in droves to be part of what many are calling Halloween for fashionistas.

Victoria Beckham attended the Fashion’s Night Out event at Berdorf Goodman and wore a printed mini dress from Giles Deacon with thigh high Gucci boots.

I’m torn.  I love the outfit but I don’t think Posh is doing it any justice.

Ciara was another one of a slew of celebrities who participated/attended a Fashion’s Night Out event.  She leant her star power to the Versace event and wore a gold leather tube dress with silver sandals (not shown) and gold bangles.

Ciara usually finds herself in the ‘miss’ pile for me but I think this outfit is a definite winner.  I love that she seized the mixed metals Fall trend and kept it simple.

On Wednesday night Charlize Theron and Vogue threw a dinner at Sak’s Fifth Avenue to celebrate the renovation of their third floor.

Charlize wore a black and white floral Dior Exclusive dress for Sak’s Fifth Avenue with strappy heels and small silver box cut.

I really like this outfit.  I love how the primness of the dress is offset with the print and strappy heels.  A very nice look from the hostess.

Also in attendance was Alexis Bledel, seen here with Christian Siriano, wearing Christian Siriano with red patent pumps.

This is another lovely look.  I like the juxtaposition of materials, textures and colours.  And from what I can see that clutch is to die for.

Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman was also in attendance wearing a black one-shoulder dress with purple suede peep-toe heels.

I have yet to see a photograph where Georgina doesn’t look stunning.  I love the dress, the shoes and the clutch.  I love the delicate draping at the bust and shoulder and the origami pleating at the waist.

New York fashion figures came out in droves last night to support the opening of The September Issue. And considering the documentary takes a look into the power hold Anna Wintour has on the fashion industry worldwide, you better believe some impressive names showed up! The Great Bobbed One was there of course, dressed in Prada Resort, with Proenza Schouler-clad daughter Bee Shaffer in tow. Hollywood was present in the form of actresses Renee Zellweger and Sienna Miller (who plays an integral role in the film as the September issue cover girl), Brit import Alexa Chung and Zac Posen-backer Diddy with his protege Cassie.

The biggest NY designers were present as well, including Marc Jacobs in his trademark manskirt (with Lorenzo Martone), Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Phillip Lim, Jason Wu, etc. And where there are designers, there are models. Vogue favorites Raquel Zimmermann, Hilary Rhoda, Chanel Iman and Karlie Kloss all turned up. A suprise was rising Maybelline star Emily DiDonato, but if you’re wondering if she’ll become a Wintour fave, keep in mind, the event was sponsored by Maybelline.

Maybe it’s just because I am a modern woman but why does anyone care that First Lady Michelle Obama was seen wearing shorts not once but twice on her family vacation. Oh the humanity!

Judging by the amount of noise her choice in attire has made, the fact the First Lady made the un-presidential choice to wear shorts on vacation has garnished more headlines than the actual news. While vacationing in the hot Grand Canyon, Michelle Obama was seen wearing shorts. Not short-shorts, just plain shorts. Some call it an outcry that the First Lady was seen in such un-ladylike attire and critics came out en masse to condemn Michelle’s choice of clothing. I love what a commentator for the LA Times wrote in her defense: “One commentator for the LA Times wrote: ‘Think about this for a minute. What should she have worn to the Grand Canyon? A tweed pantsuit? A ballgown? What do you wear on your summer vacation?”

For a woman who cannot help but be in the public eye, Michelle Obama fortunately has a good sense of style, but occasionally even she can make fashion faux-pas. Whether or not her choice of shorts is considered a fashion faux-pas remains to be seen.

The September Issue Premiere, More Photos

New York’s fashion elite hit the town last night to celebrate the release of Vogue documentary “The September Issue.” This morning I posted photos from the red carpet, but Style.com added more fabulous red carpet photos featuring fashion designers Vera Wang, Tory Burch, Georgina Chapman and Jason Wu in addition to Vogue’s Creative Director Grace Coddington. Also in attendance was a bevy of gorgeous models including Chanel Iman and Hillary Rhoda.

After the event, Style.com asked guests what their favorite moment in the movie was.  “I like it when Anna’s at home with Bee,” said Alexa Chung referencing the scene with Anna Wintour and her daughter, Bee Shaffer. Jamie Johnson agreed, “Bee did a great job of articulating her relationship with her mother. There was certain tenderness to it.  It was very touching, very endearing.”

“My favorite scene,” said Jonny Lee Miller, laughing, “was Sienna having a fitting.  She was sitting next to me (during the screening) freaking out.”

“The best scene had to be when Grace spoke about her passion.  It wasn’t about ‘the biggest issue,’ but about fashion and what it meant to her,” said Sean Combs about Grace Coddington. Coddington’s moment in the gardens at Versailles garnered quite a few votes (including that of a Thakoon-clad Carey Mulligan), as did many of her other onscreen moments. “When Grace is going back and forth with the Galliano garment,” offered Jason Wu for his favorite scene. Vera Wang cited another Grace-moment, “When she says ‘It’s ridiculous!’  I was a sittings editor.  I’ve had that feeling many times,” explained the designer.

Grace Coddington is said to be the true star of the film. Designer Thakoon’s favorite moment also included Grace: “Grace shooting with Patrick (Demarchelier) last minute.  She makes a story in a day!”

I am so excited to see this movie! Finally, someone is capturing the time and process, not to mention, the work alone, it takes to put out Vogue’s largest and most anticipated issue every year. The September Issue. “dun dun dun”

I have a confession to make. I’ve never seen a single episode of Gossip Girl. Not even one minutes worth of the show.

My life is quite hectic and I’m not really a TV person (with the exception of America’s Next Top Model, which I haven’t seen in a while, and the odd episode of Jeopardy).

Now that I’ve got that off my chest here is the news you came here to read: designers Tory Burch and Marchesa co-designer Georgina Chapman were seen filming cameos for an episode of Gossip Girl.

The designers filmed separate scenes, Tory on a set made to look like her office, for an episode that is set to air for October 5.

Vanity Fair has released 2009 International Best Dressed List and this year the world leaders’ ladies have topped the charts.

Among the fashionably fabulous are Michelle Obama, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Sheikha Mozah of Qatar, Diana Taylor (girlfriend of Mayor Michael Bloomberg) and Princess Letizia of Spain. Other luminaries on the list include Penelope Cruz, Anne Hathaway and Alicia Keys made the list in addition to fashion designers Tory Burch, Georgina Chapman and Rachel Roy. Renee Zellweger finds herself in the list’s Hall of Fame alongside Catherine Deneuve. Representing the fashionable men are Hall of Famer Lapo Elkann, Brad Pitt, Daniel Craig and Tiki Barber.

Some of the fashionable items the magazine applauds: Mrs. Obama’s Vatican veil, Bruni-Sarkozy’s ballet flats, Sheikha Mozah’s diamond-and-pearl evening belt, Anne Hathaway’s silver beaded Armani gown worn to the Academy Awards, Princess Letizia’s plum silk Felipe Varela dress, Bruce Weber’s bandana and Diana Taylor and Mayor Bloomberg’s complementary clothes.

The 2009 International Best-Dressed List

Talk about the power of style! (Or is it the style of power?) Either way, potus joined his First Lady on the 2009 roster, while Michael Bloomberg and Diana Taylor did New York City proud. Hollywood scored with the panache of Brad Pitt and Anne Hathaway, Catherine Deneuve brought her permanent Parisian chic to the Hall of Fame, and—let’s be practical for a moment—the year’s fashion leaders divulged their bargain-hunting secrets.

Time to overdose on Georgina Chapman as a femme fatale with a taste for high end cigarettes and bad men, sipping champagne and soaking in the tub in The Business.

While many were battling the rain the ladies were hitting the scene dressed to the nines.

Jennifer Lopez continued her 40th birthday celebrations with her husband Marc Anthony, of course, at the Edison Ballroom in New York City.  Jennifer wore a billowy, bejewelled halter dress with a gold box clutch.

While this outfit is quite dramatic (made so by the hair and the bejewelled neckline) this is Jennifer Lopez and it is her 40th birthday.  Hair aside I am glad to see Jennifer Lopez reclaiming some of her previous sex appeal.  I like this dress on her and I love the clutch…J’adore…

Ciara made an appearance at the HollyRod Foundation’s 2009 DesignCare event honoring Michael J. Fox and she wore leather mini dress with origami detailing at the bust.

I can’t say that there is anything about this that I like.  Maybe the shoes?  The hair, the dress, horrible.

Marchesa co-designer Georgina Chapman also attended the HollyRod event and wore a bright red strapless dress with large bow at the hip from the Marchesa Resort 2010 collection with matching peep toe heels.

At first glance I thought this dress was too 80s prom but it’s growing on me.  Maybe it is the gorgeous woman wearing it (and, honestly, who looks better in Marchesa than Georgina?) but I likes.

Disney starlet Ashley Tisdale A Summer Soiree – The Magic of Mentoring charity fundraiser and wore a white draped dress with studded double-wrapped belt and black strappy heels.

I think Ashley looks great.  Love the dress and how she belted it with a thin double-wrapped belt (that accentuates rather than overpowers) and the heels.  And I’ll be nice and pretend I like the hair too.

Songstress Katy Perry performed on NBC’s Today at Rockefeller Centre and wore a red dress embellished with black and white dice.

I kind of like this outfit.  It’s kitschy in a way that is meant to be kitschy and is not being passed off as high fashion (*cough*Lady Gaga*cough*) and most of all I love that she is wearing flats (you can’t have your feet in torment every hour of the day).

Lastly (and unfortunately least) we have Demi Moore attending the screening of Streak, which she directed, wearing what can only be described as librarian chic.

I don’t think I have to say much more.
