I spent 17 out of my 21 evenings in Mongolia in a traditional Ger – a rounder version of a teepee, generally with enough room for 4-6 beds and a wood or cow-dung stove in the center. I rode horses, camels, did some trekking, rock climbing and even one unintended swim… Despite some extremely memorable experiences including killing and eating a sheep, exploring sand dunes in the Gobi desert and spending time practicing my horrible Mongolian with local families over Airag (fermented vodka) and yak cheese, something that will stick with me longest will be the group dynamics of our 5 person group that left UB (Ulaanbaatar) in a 40 year old Russian jeep on an intended 14-day  tour of the country. One member of our group ended up being exposed as psychologically unstable, with severe control and attention issues. She was also the only female in the group. Big lessoned learned for me! Before we left UB, I already sensed the anxiety steaming from this individual, as she was pushing her  agenda and timelines despite the remainder of the group being fairly relaxed and flexible. In the future…. trust your instinct! I underestimated how intimate it would be spending two weeks with strangers mostly in a jeep or a ger. In my rush ‘to take advantage of time’, I compromised and decided to travel with this group to meet my selfish goals of a cheap, long trip.

The trip commenced, and after two days of butting heads with this individual, I decided the only way I would survive the trip was to allow her a large space, co-existing and taking the path of least resistance. Interestingly, while I did this, her tension with two other members of our group increased. Her behavior bordered on unbelievable (one night storming out with no food or clothing and getting lost until we got a call from the police in the morning), to just annoying, i.e., in an effort to do what she needed she would disregard everyone else’s property, including our hosts. Our first two nights consisted of upsetting hosts by moving a Buddha statue to the floor and burning a nylon bag on the stove so the place smelled like plastic for 2 days. Despite these strange and inconsiderate behaviors, the biggest issue came from her worldview. She portrayed herself as a eastern thinking, enlightened individual with deep insight into things like meditation and other-worldly phenomena. However, what I finally deduced after a week was that any conversation she entered (almost all of them due to her attention issues), became an argument rather than a conversation. This was due to her use of words such as “actually, I know, NO, let me tell you”, which immediately ruined the air of decent discussion. And we had some great ones going around meditation, religion, global politics, etc. If someone challenged her, she would become upset and escape. The rest of us spent countless hours deducing her background and how this apparently confident 32 year old could really just be a frightened child running away from problems at home, but we’ll leave that to the psychologist which I really hope she seeks in the near future.

I was constantly digging into the archives of MBA training, looking for group conflict strategies to help right the situation. Ultimately other than some decent facilitating, the only solution was to remove the individual from the group, and we were all thankful for giving ourselves a 10-day option where people could leave the trip. She pleaded ‘to stay with the group’, promising to ‘work on the issues’, but ultimately 3 of us decided we were not on holiday to provide therapy, but to have an easy time and asked her to leave. One of the guys did leave with her, leaving 3 of us to finish the tour. That is a story in itself.

The final three days were brilliant. Stefan from Switzerland and Jules from England and I at first celebrated our freedom, but then very much enjoyed conversations about life and love after getting comfortable with each other. Recently I blogged about how difficult it is to find meaningful relationships while traveling – but this was the first time I can say I felt like I had a couple of like-minded male friends to help me explore large issues in my life, and vice-versa. It felt like group—therapy at first, after all the tension we needed to debrief, talking about male/female dynamics, group interactions and situations, but we quickly moved beyond the tragedy, enjoying a few days hiking around the countryside near beautiful White Lake in central Mongolia.

A felt pressure to leave Mongolia a little earlier than I would have liked – winter was coming in fast (-23c one evening and several snow storms), plus I was trying to get to Nepal to do some trekking before winter set in there. Always running from the snow! BUT, I would like to come back some day, explore northern Mongolia and the reindeer people, the Kazaks of western Mongolia and possible journey into the “stans” – Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan from there.

It is true what they about Mongolians – they are extrememly hospitable, lived a very simple lifestyle in one of the worlds harshest climates. It wasn’t so much about sightseeing here. In fact, I was quite saddened to learn about the history of Tibetan Buddhism here. Despite the first Dali Lama coming from Mongolia, today Buddhism is a shell of its former self, destroyed by the Stalinists in the 1930’s and 1940s. Countless times I’d read in the guidebook about a monastery yielding thousands of monks and hundreds of buildings, followed by a sentence that Stalin had the monks sent to Siberian death camps and the buildings burnt to the ground. Today, you will find a handful of monks and a few buildings built in the 1990s after the fall of communism. Hardly any semblance of Buddhist culture remains in day to day life.  The trip was more about getting off the tourist trail, watching day to day Mongolia life and having A LOT of time to think and reflect. The true benefit of my time here can’t really be measured, but I have made some rather large personal decisions that I feel VERY clear about and look forward to sharing with everyone in the near future.

Dr. Abdullah Abdullah says his decision is “final,” “I will not participate in the election.” Dr. Abdullah told supporters, saying his demands for ensuring a fraud-free election had not been met. An investigation by the UN-backed Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) led to Mr Karzai’s share of the vote dropping to 49.67% – below the crucial 50% plus one vote threshold needed to avoid a second round. Dr. Abdullah was adjudged in the end to have won about 31% of valid votes cast. Een geluk bij een ongeluk, zou je het zo mogen noemen? Een journalistiek geluk dan, want dat was het wel. Toen ik in Tanzania was, vond er aan de rand van Dar es Salaam een explosie plaats. Daarbij meerdere doden en gewonden vielen en tal van huizen verwoest werden. Wij waren erbij.



Mbagala
Eén dag voor Koninginnedag ontplofte er in Mbagala, aan de rand van Dar es Salaam, een wapendepot van het leger. De klappen waren door de hele stad te horen. Ook wij hoorden ze, maar dachten in eerste instantie niet aan een explosie. Toen een van de mensen van Music Mayday vertelde wat er gebeurd was, begon het journalistieke bloed te stromen.

Erop af
De rollen werden verdeeld. Hannelore Struijs, camerajournalist, en docent Gie Meeuwis gingen samen met Susanne, een van de Tanzanianen die met ons samenwerkte, naar het gebied toe om een reportage te maken. Ik ging het internet op om het laatste nieuws naar buiten te brengen. Uiteraard was ik graag meegegaan naar het gebied, maar wanneer zoiets gebeurd in een land waar je de taal niet spreekt, spreken beelden meer dan woorden. Natuurlijk bleef ik constant in contact met de drie die in het gebied waren, om het laatste nieuws te verwerken in de berichtgeving.

Direct probeerden we ook Nederlandse media in te schakelen om hen het laatste nieuws mee te geven. Omdat er op dat moment nog te weinig bekend was (lees: er waren op ‘te weinig doden’), waren ze niet van plan iets met onze spullen te doen.

UNAMID
Twee dagen later viel ons op dat er ineens allemaal konvooien van de VN door Dar es Salaam reden met het opschrift “UNAMID”. Dit wekte natuurlijk onze nieuwsgierigheid en via de Nederlandse ambassadeur kwamen we erachter dat er noodhulp naar het getroffen gebied was gestuurd. Vanuit Nederland kregen we te horen dat UNAMID de VN-missie in Darfur was. Dit alles gebeurde ’s avonds, dus we besloten de volgende dag een follow-up te maken.

Hannelore en Gie gingen weer naar het gebied en ik ging weer bloggen op het internet. Daarvoor heb ik contact gehad met onder meer het hoofd van UNICEF in Tanzania en de Nederlandse ambassadeur. De betrokkenheid van UNAMID werd ontkend, maar er werd wel verteld dat er noodhulp was gestuurd. Hannelore en Gie toen hebben inderdaad de zakken rijst op beeld vastgelegd.

Nederlandse media
Hoe meer nieuws er kwam, hoe meer vragen er ook bijkwamen. En het vreemde aan dit alles is, is dat de Nederlandse media er niets mee wilden. We hebben bij verschillende media ons verhaal proberen te krijgen, maar niemand wilde het hebben. Een van de redenen dat ze er niets mee wilden, was dat er te weinig doden waren. Bovendien was net in Apeldoorn de aanslag op de Koninklijke Familie geweest, dus het was niet belangrijk genoeg.

Met name het antwoord dat er te weinig doden waren, viel bij mij slecht. Ik heb er ook mijn vragen bij gesteld en het heeft me geïnspireerd om dieper te kijken naar de berichtgeving uit en over Afrika. Ik heb de Nederlandse en internationale media onderzocht en vragen gesteld aan verschillende correspondenten en chefs van buitenlandredacties.

Vreemd
Het klinkt misschien vreemd voor een buitenstaander, maar ik heb veel geleerd van die explosie: hoe het is om te werken in een ander land en hoe je je stukken over de grens krijgt. En dit is iets wat ik vaker wil gaan doen. Het is soms frustrerend dat je niet alles kunt vertellen, maar het is een hele mooie uitdaging om dat toch te proberen.

Ik heb het geluk gehad dat ik binnen een jaar tijd twee maal naar Afrika ben geweest. Beide keren was het voor mijn opleiding. Door die reizen ben ik besmet geraakt met het ‘Afrika-virus’: voorheen had ik helemaal niets met het continent, maar nu zit het onder mijn huid. Zo erg, dat ik Afrika zo veel mogelijk in de gaten probeer te houden en nu al zeker weet dat ik er ga werken. Maar ik heb soms het gevoel dat ik niet het echte Afrika in onze media te zien krijg.


DR Congo
Mijn eerste reis naar Afrika was met voor tweede stage. Ik deed onderzoek voor een documentaire en de maker van de documentaire, Peter Tetteroo, ging naar de Democratische Republiek Congo, om daar in artisanale mijnen (mijnen waar zonder machines in gewerkt wordt) te filmen. Ik mocht mee als producer.

We zijn in twee verschillende mijnen geweest: één waar coltan wordt gewonnen en één waar goud wordt gedolven. Beide mijnen zijn door dorpen opgezet en er wordt door iedereen uit het dorp in de mijnen gewerkt; kinderen van amper vijf jaar oud tot de ouderlingen. Al het werk wordt met de hand gedaan; er komen geen machines aan te pas. Veel van deze mijnen zijn in handen van rebellen. Tot mijn verbazing had ik er in Nederland vrijwel nog nooit wat van gehoord.

Tanzania
Mijn tweede reis was naar Tanzania. Dit was met het project Join! We gingen daarheen om artikelen te schrijven voor het tijdschrift Join! In Tanzania werkten we samen met studenten van de school voor Journalistiek in Dar es Salaam. Via hen ontdekten we verhalen die je anders niet zo snel zou vinden, omdat verhalen uit dergelijke landen – die relatief gezien rustig zijn – vaak gaan over onder andere hiv/aids of problemen in de politiek.

Maar dankzij onze vrienden in Tanzania kwamen we ook achter andere verhalen. Bijvoorbeeld wat voor werk jongeren doen naast hun opleiding, hoe mensen hun vrije tijd doorbrengen en dat niet alleen de politici corrupt zijn.

Beeld van Afrika
Deze reizen hebben ervoor gezorgd dat ik me ging afvragen of ik in onze media wel een juist beeld kreeg van Afrika. Zo kwam ik op het idee om een reflectie te schrijven over dit onderwerp.

Ik heb het ten eerste gebaseerd op mijn eigen ervaringen en ideeën. Vervolgens heb ik een krantenanalyse gedaan en heb ik gesproken met correspondenten en chefs van de buitenland-redacties van de NOS, RTL en de GPD. Met hen heb ik gesproken over hun keuze van nieuws uit Afrika. Met de correspondenten over hun manier van werken.

Bram Vermeulen
Een van de correspondenten was Bram Vermeulen. Hij was even in Nederland en ik mocht hem interviewen. Hij denkt ook dat ‘het echte Afrika’ niet goed naar voren komt. Volgens Bram heeft dat vooral te maken met westerse belangen, die in bepaalde landen groter zijn dan in andere. Die landen krijgen daarom meer aandacht.

Afrikaanse journalisten
Ik heb ook met Afrikaanse journalisten gemaild, met de vraag hoe zij erover denken. Al deze gesprekken en de krantenanalyse hebben mijn gedachte – dat ik in onze media niet het echte beeld van Afrika krijg – bevestigd. Dat is wat mij betreft een gemiste kans, want er is veel op het continent te halen, waar wij nog wat van kunnen leren. Dat is ook een van de redenen dat ik in Afrika wil gaan werken, om die verhalen te vertellen.

Het tweede leerjaar heeft een project dat GeR heet. Het is een crossmediaal nieuwsbedrijf, waarin studenten artikelen schrijven voor de site, hun krant en hun tijdschrift en waar ze radio en televisie maken. Het is een voorbereiding op hun mediumkeuze. Vierdejaars studenten coördineren de ‘pijlers’ waarin de tweedejaars werken en helpen hen met hun artikelen en producties.

En ik dus ook. Normaal word je als vierdejaars student ingedeeld bij een van de pijlers: Geniet, Redt, Sport of Leeft. Maar mij werd gevraagd om iets nieuws te gaan begeleiden. GeR was namelijk een samenwerking aangegaan met Univers, het blad van de Universiteit van Tilburg, en ik moest die samenwerking gaan coördineren.

Dit hield in dat ik twee maal per week bij de vergadering van Univers aanschoof, om te kijken wat voor onderwerpen zij gingen behandelen, omdat sommige onderwerpen die zij in de krant zouden hebben, ook leuk konden zijn voor GeR. Daarnaast liet ik weten waar met name de radio en de tv-mensen van GeR  mee bezig waren, zodat deze artikelen aan elkaar gelinkt konden worden.

De rest van de tijd was ik op de GeR-redactie om de studenten te begeleiden die producties maakten die aan artikelen van de Univers gekoppeld werden. En waar nodig stuurde ik de tweedejaars studenten bij als ze niet altijd evenveel zin hadden om de onderwerpen te maken. Dit kwam gelukkig niet vaak voor.

Verder hielp ik de tweedejaars studenten als zij dat gevraagd werd. Ik hield me voornamelijk met radio bezig, omdat ik de enige vierdejaarsstudent was die radio heeft gedaan. Dus met vragen over radio, kwamen de studenten vaak naar mij toe.

Verkiezingen

In november 2008 waren er de Amerikaanse verkiezingen. Een aantal studenten was in de VS om vanuit daar de verkiezingen te verslaan. Onder hen ook een paar radiomakers. Zij hadden via een Rapidshare-account meerdere radio-items naar Nederland gestuurd. Mij leek het een leuk idee om een speciale radio-uitzending te maken over de verkiezingen. De radio-docente vond dat ook en met de radio-studenten hebben we de items beluisterd en daarmee een uitzending samengesteld.

Het GeR project was erg leuk om te doen en ook leerzaam. Je merkt dan pas echt wat je in de jaren daarvoor zelf geleerd hebt, als je de stukken van de tweedejaars leest, luistert, of bekijkt. Je ziet fouten die jezelf ook maakte, maar voor een tweedejaars heel normaal zijn om ze te maken. Daarvan leren de tweedejaars van, maar ook jijzelf.

Hoi! Dit is de eerste blog op mijn afstudeerblog. Wacht even, klopt dit wel? Heet een berichtje ook een blog of heet de verzameling berichten een blog? Ik zoek het even op hoor….

Nee een blog is een afkorting van weblog, dus het gaat echt om de verzameling berichten. Een bericht heet een entrie of een post.

Goed, nu heb ik het blogjargon onder de knie, dus we kunnen verder. Op dit blog (heel veel mensen hebben het trouwens over ‘deze blog’ maar dat klinkt echt niet. Het doet me denken aan een slechte parodie op allochtonen Nederlands)  zal ik jullie regelmatig op de hoogte houden van mijn vorderingen in mijn laatste jaar op de Fontys Hogeschool voor Journalistiek in Tilburg. Zaken die op de agenda staan dit jaar: naar Berlijn voor het project popjournalistiek, de minor Filosofie en Ethiek halen, stage lopen bij tijdschrift Revu in Hoofddorp, mijn portfolio in orde maken voor het eindassessment, factchecken en de baas spelen over de kinders van GeR. Zoals jullie wel zin zal ik het razend druk krijgen. Ik ga het voor nu dus kort houden, zodat ik kan gaan werken aan één van deze dingen. Veel plezier met het lezen van mijn blog!

I spent 17 out of my 21 evenings in Mongolia in a traditional Ger – a rounder version of a teepee, generally with enough room for 4-6 beds and a wood or cow-dung stove in the center. I rode horses, camels, did some trekking, rock climbing and even one unintended swim… Despite some extremely memorable experiences including killing and eating a sheep, exploring sand dunes in the Gobi desert and spending time practicing my horrible Mongolian with local families over Airag (fermented vodka) and yak cheese, something that will stick with me longest will be the group dynamics of our 5 person group that left UB (Ulaanbaatar) in a 40 year old Russian jeep on an intended 14-day  tour of the country. One member of our group ended up being exposed as psychologically unstable, with severe control and attention issues. She was also the only female in the group. Big lessoned learned for me! Before we left UB, I already sensed the anxiety steaming from this individual, as she was pushing her  agenda and timelines despite the remainder of the group being fairly relaxed and flexible. In the future…. trust your instinct! I underestimated how intimate it would be spending two weeks with strangers mostly in a jeep or a ger. In my rush ‘to take advantage of time’, I compromised and decided to travel with this group to meet my selfish goals of a cheap, long trip.

The trip commenced, and after two days of butting heads with this individual, I decided the only way I would survive the trip was to allow her a large space, co-existing and taking the path of least resistance. Interestingly, while I did this, her tension with two other members of our group increased. Her behavior bordered on unbelievable (one night storming out with no food or clothing and getting lost until we got a call from the police in the morning), to just annoying, i.e., in an effort to do what she needed she would disregard everyone else’s property, including our hosts. Our first two nights consisted of upsetting hosts by moving a Buddha statue to the floor and burning a nylon bag on the stove so the place smelled like plastic for 2 days. Despite these strange and inconsiderate behaviors, the biggest issue came from her worldview. She portrayed herself as a eastern thinking, enlightened individual with deep insight into things like meditation and other-worldly phenomena. However, what I finally deduced after a week was that any conversation she entered (almost all of them due to her attention issues), became an argument rather than a conversation. This was due to her use of words such as “actually, I know, NO, let me tell you”, which immediately ruined the air of decent discussion. And we had some great ones going around meditation, religion, global politics, etc. If someone challenged her, she would become upset and escape. The rest of us spent countless hours deducing her background and how this apparently confident 32 year old could really just be a frightened child running away from problems at home, but we’ll leave that to the psychologist which I really hope she seeks in the near future.

I was constantly digging into the archives of MBA training, looking for group conflict strategies to help right the situation. Ultimately other than some decent facilitating, the only solution was to remove the individual from the group, and we were all thankful for giving ourselves a 10-day option where people could leave the trip. She pleaded ‘to stay with the group’, promising to ‘work on the issues’, but ultimately 3 of us decided we were not on holiday to provide therapy, but to have an easy time and asked her to leave. One of the guys did leave with her, leaving 3 of us to finish the tour. That is a story in itself.

The final three days were brilliant. Stefan from Switzerland and Jules from England and I at first celebrated our freedom, but then very much enjoyed conversations about life and love after getting comfortable with each other. Recently I blogged about how difficult it is to find meaningful relationships while traveling – but this was the first time I can say I felt like I had a couple of like-minded male friends to help me explore large issues in my life, and vice-versa. It felt like group—therapy at first, after all the tension we needed to debrief, talking about male/female dynamics, group interactions and situations, but we quickly moved beyond the tragedy, enjoying a few days hiking around the countryside near beautiful White Lake in central Mongolia.

A felt pressure to leave Mongolia a little earlier than I would have liked – winter was coming in fast (-23c one evening and several snow storms), plus I was trying to get to Nepal to do some trekking before winter set in there. Always running from the snow! BUT, I would like to come back some day, explore northern Mongolia and the reindeer people, the Kazaks of western Mongolia and possible journey into the “stans” – Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan from there.

It is true what they about Mongolians – they are extrememly hospitable, lived a very simple lifestyle in one of the worlds harshest climates. It wasn’t so much about sightseeing here. In fact, I was quite saddened to learn about the history of Tibetan Buddhism here. Despite the first Dali Lama coming from Mongolia, today Buddhism is a shell of its former self, destroyed by the Stalinists in the 1930’s and 1940s. Countless times I’d read in the guidebook about a monastery yielding thousands of monks and hundreds of buildings, followed by a sentence that Stalin had the monks sent to Siberian death camps and the buildings burnt to the ground. Today, you will find a handful of monks and a few buildings built in the 1990s after the fall of communism. Hardly any semblance of Buddhist culture remains in day to day life.  The trip was more about getting off the tourist trail, watching day to day Mongolia life and having A LOT of time to think and reflect. The true benefit of my time here can’t really be measured, but I have made some rather large personal decisions that I feel VERY clear about and look forward to sharing with everyone in the near future.
