Geraldine, Bewohnerin der 9. BigBrother Staffel, hat auf ihren Blog bekannt gegeben, dass sie ab den 4.Januar eine Ausbildung zur Saftschubse Flugbegleiterin anfangen wird.

Sie äußerte diesen Wunsch bereits im Haus, wie einige Live-Zuschauer sicherlich mitbekommen haben dürften.

The spot we picked for camp site last night was beautiful. As we were falling asleep the moon and millions of shiny stars were peaking into our camper through the large sunroof. It felt like sleeping under the stars, literally. We woke up a few times during the night as strong gusts of wind shook the van from side to side. Katka was snugged to me all night as the wind cooled the van to about 5C. It felt wonderful.

We wake up around 09:00 and read wonderful personal emails from our parents and good friends. Very encouraging. The inside of the camper is filled with sunlight and it’s also a lot warmer. The view is magnificent. Huge green valley of Akaroa with emerald water of the bay and we even see massive mountains covered in snow to the west. New Zealand is stunningly beautiful so far and very relaxed. The only things that I really miss is a human contact. At times I feel like going to a pub (me!) just to be among people. This is a place of beautiful solitude, at times a bit too much of it.

We drive down to Akaroa, buy some groceries, ice and refuel on water. It’s Katka’s nameday so we contemplate a chocolate but for now we skip it. We have definitely gained 5kg each so we have a lot to loose (or gain;) ) by giving in. After a short drive we pull over to Robinsons Bay and have breakfast by an old jetty. The seaguls with their beautiful white feathers and bright red beaks and feet keep us company. We pack up and leave the beautiful Akaroa behind. We head south in direction of Ashburton.

We pull over next to Rail Trail about 40km out of Akaroa and walk through tall grass to get a shot of the greenish lake and the snow covered mountains. There is a flock of more than 40 black swans resting on the lake. Beautiful! Walking through the grass I realize that in some strange way I am chasing the hay fever around the globe. Sneezing and running nose are here.

Katka takes the “wheel” in her hands while I type the blog on the iPhone. Most of them are done like that and when I figure out how to synch some shots from the MacBook, I will upload them through iPhone. As we make our way south it feels like driving in central Slovakia with the huge rocky snow covered peaks to our right and long green pastures leading to them. We pass couple of dried and semi dried river beds completely covered in the
most amazing carpets of yellow flowers. It looks as if the water has turned into flowers. The bits of river that still flows has beautifuly greenish/blueish cast from the glaciers up in the mountains. We arrive in Ashburton and stop at the info center and a bookstore. I buy Katka a book for her nameday and we also get books on camp sites in NZ. The lovely ladies at the iCenter tell us to get showered at local swimming pool and get our laundry done at one camper site. We have lovely salad and avocado sandwiches for late lunch while waiting for the laundry.

Once that is out of the way we drive to the public swimming pool where we manage to swim 750m each. It’s the first excercise in 65 days. As a bonus we get to shower which means we don’t need a paid camp site tonight. It’s close to 20:30 so we decide to drive on to Geraldine. Just as most towns here it looks like a beautiful ghost town. We barely see any people. While looking for a place to camp tonight we pass Gerlandine and head in direction of Timaru. It’s dark by now and the wind is getting stronger. Just past a small town of Temuka we see a rest place right next to the road and join another Wicked camper van for the night. A great day once again.

This post is not intended to join the long and ever growing list of critics of Tyler Perry.  However, it is time to weigh in on the issue of the character he has made a part of the sub-culture. While, I have never seen a Madea movie, I continue to support and thoroughly enjoy his movies like Why Did I Get Married and The Family That Preys.  I could never get past long held beliefs that there was no need for us as a people to continue along the path that others have carved for us.

Nearly 40 years ago, the great Flip Wilson, gave the world Geraldine, a character for which he dressed up as a loud mouth, tell it like it is, black woman. Since that time, we have seen Eddie Murphy, Wesley Snipes, Martin Lawrence and Jamie Foxx all play the role of women.  Now enters Madea. 

It is important to point out that while much of the criticism of Tyler Perry appears to be motivated by jealousy and even some envy. There must be room in our community for lawful and constructive debate surrounding topics that affect the entire community, without the vitriol and self-loathing that seems to permeate much of our discussions.

The question we ask is what of the power of images, especially in a community already lacking in good male role models? Charles Barkley once famously remarked, “I am not a role model,” all the while modeling his Nike shoes.  The lack of strong black males has our community in crisis!  We appear on Maury Povich denying our parental responsibilities and look to be more interested in the latest styles, rather than that, which will last. The nightly news depicts us as gun toting, self-shooting, dog killing, ear biting, white women killing, and now mass murdering.

Young black men continue to wonder about absent fathers and try to help with overworked mothers.  Anger has replaced hope; faith that was never nurtured is all but gone. In addition, for recreation, we go to the movies and see our talented tenth, not using the awesome power at their disposal to lift, but to keep us laughing at our men not being men.  Playing the role that is the only one that has been kept up in our lives, the strong black woman.

Some have said that it’s only a movie.  Recently I had a discussion with another brother about this very topic.  He was of the mind that it’s harmless fun.  My question to him is, as a father of a young black male, what if you came home and your son was dressed in his mother’s clothes, just for fun, that is? Of course, he would not like that.

The fact that Tyler Perry, at this stage in his career, is now able to finance his own projects puts more of a challenge on him to bring out not the old stereotypical images of us as a people, but he must lift his end of this burden by charting a new course, as we are headed for higher ground.

Even though they may not be able to state it themselves, Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, and yes President Obama are all black men, whose stories are only indicative of the many stories, which exist about successful, young and old black men.  Rapper Jadakiss asked the question,

“Why did Denzel have to be crooked before he took it?”  

Why do we have to be the cross dressing loud mouth? Why in 2009, when our best and brightest have the opportunities we have so longed for, do we seem to be part of the conspiracy to continue in the destruction of young black males? The dictionary defines the word image as-mental representation, idea or concept.  Is Geraldine, Madea, Sheneneh, or Wanda the image we, as black people, want as our representation across the globe?  Is that the idea?

And what about the church going fan base that makes up the large percentage of Madea supporters? What are their ideas, and concepts of black men, and how does this fit into the larger issue of men not being in church?  Tyler Perry said he continues the Madea series for them. Well it’s time he demand more of them and they of themselves. Madea got him this fan base, and if they are true fans, not of Madea, but her creator, then they will appreciate the growth. As a solution to these problems, we would recommend that Spike Lee, John Singleton, Tyler Perry and other black filmmakers, sit to discuss projects that will uplift, not just us as a people, but the human family.  Let’s stop talking at each other and talk to one another.

To those who would say, it’s their job, my simple reply is from the old black church and the warnings of our grandparents, “Don’t gain the world and lose your soul.”

I signed up for a 24 hour gym tonight.  God bless the internet.  For… hmmm, wow, the better party of a year, I’ve been wah wah-ing about how sad I am that I am so outta shape, and what to do? and how do I pay for it? and where is the time?

And then… it hit me… fuck, I seem to be up every night till some dumb hour, trolling the internet, watching the worst late night TV, wandering my tiny condo, doing nothing… if only there was something productive, I could do at 12 midnight.  a-ha! Work out.  AND there is a 24 hour gym in Victoria.  I went to their website and you can sign up for a free month trial.  I did, they emailed me a coupon and tomorrow I’ll bring it in and get their “pitch.”  If its reasonable, I’ll sign up and get in the best shape of my life… or not.  Maybe it costs a billion trillion dollars to work out at a 24 hour gym?

The point is, after trolling the internets for a bit, I could burn off energy doing something. Its so boring at night.  It is times like this I wish I lived in a city, then I’d walk outside.

Their or his, or whatever… the record is called “Album.”  Neat huh.

Has a nice vintage rock & roll sound.  Maybe for fans of Glasvegas… except they don’t have that one nice stand-out like “Geraldine.”  Surf style guitars, Buddy Holly hic-up sing-songs.

2009 Avrupa Şampiyonası : kısa – serbest – gösteri

Geçmişten gelen bir patenci, bir anda pistlerde boy gösterdi ve 2009 Avrupa Şampiyonasında gümüş madalya kazandı, 2009 Dünya Şampiyonasında da beşinci sırayı aldı. Aslında onu bilenler bilir… Samuel Contesti’nin, pistlerde yeniden boy göstermesi, büyüleyici bir dönüş hikâyesidir.

Contesti, 2006 yılında gözden düşünce Fransa Buz Sporları Federasyonu tarafından aforoz edilmişti. Ama o yılmadı ve geçen yılları, sessiz, sakin ve derinden giderek iyi değerlendirdi. 2008’de İtalya adına yarışan bir patenci olarak pistlere geri döndü… Ve 2009 Avrupa ve Dünya Şampiyonalarında hem seyircilerin hem de hakemlerin gönlünü fethetmeyi bildi. Contesti, bunun sonucu olarak, İtalya’ya Erkeklerde Carlo Fassi’den 55 yıl sonra ilk madalyayı kazandırdı.

Contesti, Helsinki’de Avrupa ikincisi olduktan sonra, “Bu, benden desteklerini esirgemeyenler için mükemmel bir zafer oldu” diyerek belki de Fransız yetkililerine sitemde bulunuyordu.

Bu arada, Fransız federasyonundan bazı yetkililer, kendi eski sporcularının başarısını asık suratla izliyordu. Contesti’nin İtalya adına kazandığı gümüş madalya, onların canını yakmış olmalıydı.

Eski Fransız yeni İtalyan patenci, 2009 Avrupa ve Dünya Şampiyonalarında Brian Joubert’in gerisinde kaldı ama yine de nefesini ensesinde hissettirdi. Avrupa Şampiyonasında Fransız Yannick Ponsero ve Alban Préaubert’i geride bıraktı, Dünya Şampiyonasında Ponsero’yu bir kez daha geçti.

Contesti’nin kazandığı gümüş madalya, Carlo Fassi’nin 1954’te Avrupa Şampiyonu olmasından sonra elde edilen ilk madalya olarak tarihe geçti. Ancak bu madalya, kendisine yeniden yarışmalara girme imkânı sağlayan yeni ülkesi İtalya’ya onun bir teşekkürü olarak da hafızalara kazındı.

Peki, ne olmuştu da Contesti ülkesi Fransa’yı bırakıp İtalya’yı temsil etmeye başlamıştı?

Contesti’nin spor hayatı 2005’e kadar gelecek vaad eden bir görünüm veriyordu. Fransa’nın eski futbolcularından Yves Contesti’nin oğluydu. Fransa’nın Gap kentinde büyümüştü. Dört yaşına geldiğinde iki ablasının izinden giderek buz patenine başlamıştı.

Contesti, “Çok aktif bir çocuktum. Enerjimi boşaltmam gerekiyordu” diyor çocukluk yılları için ve devam ediyor: “Aslında futbol oynamak istiyordum. Aslına bakarsanız, ben genel olarak sporun her türünü seviyorum. Zamanımı değerlendirmem gerekiyordu, bunun için patene başladım. Sonraları yarışmalara girdim ve anladım ki yarışmak benim için çok çekiciydi…”

Contesti, Didier Lucine’in gözetiminde Annecy kentinde çalışıyordu. Lucine’in kulübünde başka patenciler de vardı. Contesti, 2005 yılında, ilk kez Avrupa Şampiyonasına katılma hakkını elde etti ve o yıl Avrupa Şampiyonasında dokuzuncu oldu. Aynı yıl, Dünya Şampiyonasına da katıldı ama kısa programda 26’ncı sırayı aldığı için serbest programı kayma hakkını elde edemedi.

Contesti, 2006’da Fransa Şampiyonasında Brian Joubert’in ardından ikinci oldu. Ama beklenenin aksine, o yıl Lyon’da düzenlenen Avrupa Şampiyonasına katılan Fransız takımına alınmadı. Oysa Lyon’da yapılan 2006 Avrupa Şampiyonasında en iyi iki erkek sporcu Fransa’yı 2006 Kış Olimpiyatlarında temsil etme hakkını kazanacaktı.

Contesti, yarışmalarda birkaç kez Frédéric Dambier’yi geçmiş olduğu için bu karara Fransa Ulusal Olimpiyat Komitesi nezdinde itirazda bulundu. Olimpiyat Komitesi de, Fransa Buz Sporları Federasyonundan seçme yarışması düzenlemesini istedi. Contesti, federasyonun düzenlediği seçmelerde Dambier’yi geçti. Fakat bu kez de, Dambier, mahkemeye başvurdu ve davayı kazandı.

Federasyon, takıma girme ölçütleri arasında ISU Grand Prix yarışmalarında alınan puanların da geçerli olacağını daha başta ilan etmişti. Fransa Şampiyonasında dördüncü olan Frédéric Dambier, Contesti’den daha fazla puan aldığı için Avrupa Şampiyonasına katılacak patenciler listesine alındı.

Contesti, Avrupa Şampiyonasına gidememekten ve dolayısıyla Kış Olimpiyatlarına katılma mücadelesinden geri kaldığı için derin bir hayal kırıklığına uğradı. Hatta bir ara Monako adına yarışmalara girmeyi bile düşündü… Ama bu küçük ülkenin federasyonu, muhtemelen Fransa ile arasında sorun çıkmasını istemedi ve Contesti’nin planı suya düştü. Buna rağmen, Contesti, 2007 Fransa Şampiyonasına katıldı ve üçüncü olarak Dünya Şampiyonasına gidecek Fransız takımına seçildi ancak sakat olduğu gerekçesiyle şampiyonadan iki hafta önce çekildiğini açıkladı.

Patencinin başına bir başka aksilik de, 2006 sonbaharında geldi. Fransız Federasyonu, Contesti’nin Fransız Ustalar yarışmasında kaymaması üzerine ISU’ya mektup yazarak bu patencinin formda olmadığını bildirdi ve onu Skate America yarışmalarından çekti.

Bugün 26 yaşında olan Contesti, acıyla karışık bir gülümsemeyle, “Böyle bir şeyin olacağını biliyordum. Herkese söylemiştim, ‘bakın beni göndermeyecekler’ diye… Skate America’ya gönderilmemem benim açımdan sürpriz olmamıştı. Bu sadece daha önce olanların doğal bir uzantısıydı” diye konuşuyor.

Contesti, artık Fransa’da sporcu olarak geleceğinin olmadığını iyice anlamıştı. İtalya adına yarışmalara girmeye karar verdi. Zaten İtalyan asıllı bir aileden geliyordu. 2007 Şubat ayında, eski bir şampiyon patenci olan ve hem Fransız hem de İtalyan vatandaşlığı bulunan Geraldine Zulini ile evlenmişti. Zulini, daha önce Annecy’de çalışmış ama artık yarışmalara girmeyi bırakmış ve antrenörlüğe başlamıştı.

Contesti, ülke değiştirebilmek için iki sezon beklemek zorundaydı. İtalya adına ilk önce küçük yarışmalara girdi. Bunlardan bazıları, 2008 Mart ayında Hollanda’da, 2008 sonbaharında Avusturya’da yapılan yarışmalardı. Üst sıralara tırmanabilmesi lâzımdı. Bunun için Annecy’den ve antrenör Didier Lucine’den ayrıldı ve karısıyla birlikte İtalya’nın Courmayeur kentine giderek orada çalışmaya başladı. Karısı da, orada antrenörlük yapacaktı.

“Annecy’de kalamazdım. Karımdan 300 km uzakta olmak için evlenmemiştim. Kendisine benim antrenörlüğümü yapıp yapmayacağını sordum. Böyle bir şeyin sorun olmayacağını ve beni çalıştırabileceğini biliyordum. Ayrıca, (İsviçreli antrenör) Peter Grütter’den yardımcı olmasını istedik. Geçen Ağustostan (2008) bu yana bize yardım ediyor” diyor Contesti, Annecy sonrası günler için…

Contesti’nin belki de şansı açılıyordu. 2005 ve 2006 Dünya Şampiyonu, 2006 Olimpiyat ikincisi İsviçreli Stéphane Lambiel, kendisini yetiştiren antrenörü Peter Grütter’den ayrılıp Viktor Petrenko ile çalışmak için ABD yollarına düşmese, eski Fransız yeni İtalyan patenci acaba İsviçreli antrenörün yardımından yararlanabilir miydi? Belki de Peter Grütter, Stephane Lambiel’in ayrılmasından sonra yeni bir şampiyon yetiştirmek için Contesti’ye el atmıştır. Kim bilir… Bunu Peter Grütter’e sormak lâzım. Her önüne gelen sporcuyu çalıştırmamasıyla tanınan “yaşlı kurt”, neden Contesti’ye destek verdiğini en iyi anlatacak kişidir…

Buz pateni dünyasında karısı tarafından çalıştırılan patenciye rastlamak kolay değildir. Böyle bir durumun kendisi için hiçbir sakıncasının olmadığını düşünen Contesti, “Önemli olan, bu işin üstesinden nasıl geleceğinizdir. Birçokları bizi uyardı, ‘göreceksiniz kolay olmayacak, böyle gitmez’ diye… Ama benim için çok açık bir şey vardı. Yürürse yürür, yürümezse pateni bırakırdım. Biz paten için evlenmedik ki. O (karısı) buzla ilgili kararları alıyor, ben de onu dinliyorum” diyor.

Açık olan bir şey var. O da, bu benimsenen yöntemin işlemekte olduğu… İtalya, yeni patencisine kollarını açmıştı. Contesti, özellikle Courmayeur’de “krallar gibi” karşılanmıştı. “Courmayeur’de en iyi şekilde antrenman yapabilmem için her şey var. İtalyan federasyonu, benim antrenman koşullarımı kolaylaştırmak için gerekli olan her şeyi sağladı. Olimpiyat Oyunlarına ve Torino’da düzenlenecek (2010) Dünya Şampiyonasına daha iyi hazırlanabilmek için biraz daha desteğe ihtiyacım var. Torino, buradan fazla uzak değil” diye konuşuyor Contesti.

Fransız-İtalyan patenci, geçen sezonda yarışmalarda bazı Fransız patencileri geçerek kendini rahatlatma ve öç alma duygularıyla hareket ettiğini ısrarla reddediyor. Ama İtalya’nın yeni gözdesi, kendisine geçmişte kötü davranan eski federasyonuna karşı elde ettiği başarının tadını çıkarmayı da ihmal etmiyordur…

Bunu, Peter Grütter de doğruluyor: “Contesti, ne kin besliyor ne de intikam alma peşinde… Zaten bu da sağlıklı bir yol değil. Kendisi için, zevk almak için kayıyor ve kendisine destek olan bir federasyonu da buldu…”

İki kez İtalya şampiyonluğunu kazanan patenci, “İspatlamam gereken hiçbir şey yok” diyor ve ekliyor: “Zamanında Fransa ikincisi olmuştum. Seviyemi korumak istiyorum. Zayıf noktalarımı gidermek için çalıştım. Devam ediyorum çünkü pateni seviyorum. Ama bir gün motivasyonumu kaybedersem, patenlerimi çıkarır başka bir iş yaparım”.

Contesti, devam ediyor: “Zirveye çıkmak değil amacım. Tek istediğim, iyi kaymak ve iyi bir performans sergilemek… Sonuç, diğer patencilerin ne yapacağına, hakemlere ve seyircilerin nasıl bir izlenim edineceğine bağlı. Benim dikkatimi toplamam gereken birçok şey var. Performans önemli. İyi bir performans sergileyerek Avrupa ikincisi olmak, önemli bir şeydi. Bu madalyayı artık benden kimse alamaz. Ekibim ve ben, bunun için çok çalıştık…”

Contesti, geçmişte yaşadıklarından sonra biraz geri plana çekilmiş, daha ihtiyatlı davranıyor görünümü veriyor. Ailesi, arkadaşları, zor zamanlarda ondan desteğini esirgemedi. Sonuç olarak, Contesti, onlara güvenebileceğini biliyor. Dolayısıyla, çevresinde güvenebileceği insanlar var.

Eski Fransız patenci, “Mümkün olan en iyi koşullar içindeyim. Sağlığıma dikkat etmeli ve desteğine güvenebileceğim insanlarla bir arada olmalıyım. O zaman her şey daha iyi olacak” diyor.

Fransa’nın Le Havre kentinde 4 Mart 1983’te doğan Contesti ile Fransız patenciler arasında herhangi bir sorun yok. “Onlarla hiç sorunum olmadı. Herkes kendi işine bakıyor. Onların da benimle sorunu olacağını düşünmüyorum. En iyi olan kazansın” diye konuşuyor.

Brian Joubert, Avrupa Şampiyonasında, yarışma sonrası basın toplantısında, Contesti’yi gülümseyerek selamlarken, “Şeref kürsüsünde üç Fransız patencinin bulunmasını isterdim. Bunu yapamadık. Bu sonuç, Samuel için çok önemli bir başarı” demişti.

Contesti, geçen sezon elde ettiği sonuçtan çok mutlu olduğunu saklamıyor. “Buzda ve buz dışında iyi bir çalışma oldu. Ekibime tekrar teşekkür etmek istiyorum. Karım Geraldine ve antrenörüm Grütter bana çok şey verdi. Onun deneyimi çok etkileyici. Patrick Bergouignan, stresin üstesinden gelmemi sağladı”. Contesti, ayrıca dans dersleri için ablası Mathilde’e de teşekkür etmeyi ihmal etmiyor.

Contesti, yeni sezonda yarışmalarda dörtlü atlayış yapmayı planlıyor. İtalyan patenci,  antrenmanlarda dörtlü salchow ve toeloop yapmasına rağmen 2009 Dünya Şampiyonasında serbest programından dörtlü atlayışları çıkarmıştı. Yeni sezonda, bunlardan birisini istikrarlı biçimde yapar hale gelmeyi ve programına eklemeyi umuyor. Yaz aylarında yoğun bir çalışma dönemi geçirdi yeni sezon için.

Kasım ayında Cup of China ve Skate Canada yarışmalarına katılacak olan Contesti, “Geçen sezon iki amacım vardı. Bu sezon da bunlar geçerli. Yaptığım işten zevk almak ve mümkün olan en iyi performansı sergileyebilmek. Bunları başarırsam, elde ettiğim sonuçlara bakmaksızın mutlu olacağım” diyerek ne denli alçak gönüllü olduğunu gösteriyor.

Contesti, yeni sezona tüm gücüyle hazırlanıyor. 2009, ona sadece spor hayatında değişiklik getirmedi. Hayat, ona büyük bir armağan daha verdi ve Haziran ayında baba oldu. Contesti-Zulini çiftinin Ennio adını verdikleri bir oğulları var şimdi…

Antrenörü Peter Grütter, bakın ne diyor onun için: “Boşa çalışıp çalışmadığını anlamak için benden yardım istemişti. Bense, tamamen olgunlaşmış bir ürün, muazzam teknik kapasitesi olan bir patenci gördüm onda… Artistik yanını daha da geliştirmesi gerektiğini söyledim kendisine…”

Grütter, devam ediyor: “Çok iyi bir patenci o… İtalya’yı temsilen bu (2009 Avrupa) şampiyonaya katıldığı için çok sevinçli. Onun gibi bir patencinin evde oturmasına izin verilemezdi. Böylesi çok iyi bir çözüm olmuş. Şeref kürsüsüne çıkmayı hedefleyebilir ama biz bundan hiç söz etmiyoruz. İtalya, onun sayesinde Olimpiyatlarda temsil edilmeyi umuyor. Ben de bunun mümkün olabileceğini düşünüyorum…”

so a lot of you probably saw my facebook status updates or my tweets this past weekend and thought “what in tarnations!?!”…well, basically WE WERE SKY BALLIN!!!!!! can’t let you know all the details for the sake of our sponsor, but a friend of geraldine’s hooked it up for us!! we took a private plane to AC, stayed at the most baller suite in the borgata, partied, clubbed, and took a limo home in the a.m. we had our own butlers and security!!! wtf!!! pure insanity…after the rehearsal i had for the show the next day i slept for just shy of a million billion hours.

also, akruti and nirali hosted a little dewali dinner on saturday night! besides dinner we prayed to all the indian gods and watched soup’s svara dvd because we are indian and that’s what we do. today is actually officially the first day of the indian new year (due to an irregular lunar calendar this year), so HAPPY NEW YEAR.

This is truly an amazing band.  They are from Glasgow, Scotland and have been around a fair while by new band standards (2003).  They’ve had major buzz in Europe the last couple of years especially.  And they are finally getting noticed on this side of the pond.

The reason I chose the song Geraldine as a kind of introduction is because, for me at least, it really shows the talents this band has.  Great musical hooks and some lyrics with a wee surprise at the end!

The song begins and goes most of the way through sounding somewhat like a love song, somewhat God song, somewhat a song of deep despair and a complete cry for help.  Some great lyrical phrasing really grabbed me.  Could a moment be made more clear  by saying ‘When your sparkle evades your soul’?  I LOVE that phrase.  As a bit of a writer myself, I can totally connect with that.

A bit of a religious reference helps skew the meanings enough that you come at this from many sides and can adapt it to whatever your mood fits.  Referencing a shepard and being your guide when you are lost…not hard to do the math there.

And in the end, they twist it all around and everything you thought was wrong (a favourite phrase of mine from somewhere!).  Geraldine has a job to do (read the lyrics, I’m not giving it away).  This song is worth the price…as is this band.  Eyes open here, you will see and hear more…

Big Brother 9 Gewinner Daniel mit seiner First Lady

Das wochenlange Getuschel kann beendet werden, die Gerüchteküche kann wieder erkalten. Es ist offiziell, Daniel (Sieger von BB9) und Geraldine (Drittplatzierte) sind ein Paar.

Wer meine Einstellung zu Geraldine im Verlauf von BB9 gelesen hat, kann sich sicherlich vorstellen, wie sehr es mir in den Fingern juckt. Irgendwie passt die neue Liebe doch genau in das von mir gezeichnete Bild.

Aber ich werde mich zurückhalten und einfach mal davon ausgehen, dass es die große Liebe ist und beide glücklich werden.

Ich überlasse Daniel das letzte Wort. Auf seiner Homepage schrieb er folgendes:

In den letzten Wochen habe ich vor allem sehr viele Gespräche mit Geraldine geführt. Schon im Haus war sie mir ein wichtiger Gesprächspartner und wir standen uns immer sehr nahe. Hier draussen ticken die Uhren etwas anders und so ist aus einer Freundschaft viel mehr entstanden. Wir sind sehr glücklich und nur darauf kommt es an. Wir wissen nicht, wo die Reise (des Lebens, nicht die Weltreise) hingeht, aber der Moment zählt und der fühlt sich sehr gut an. Klar, ich verstehe euer Misstrauen und uns war klar, dass Sätze wie: “Die will nur die Kohle…blablabla” fallen. Mein Herz sagt mir, dass dies absoluter Quatsch ist und mein Herz ist mein wichtigster Lebensberater.

Quand j’étais à Buenos Aires, j’avais eu la chance de la voir danser “en libre” au Sunderland Club. Une amie porteña me disait qu’elle avait des mains à la place des pieds. Une telle souplesse dans le fameux empeine était impressionnante. (Il vous manque un mot? Allez vite l’apprendre, vu qu’il sonne tellement mieux que sa traduction, le “cou-de-pied“, à ne pas confondre avec le “coup de pied“! Voir de même pour l’abrazo)

La vidéo mentionnée ci-dessous, que je viens de voir, me remet dans cette ambiance, me donne envie d’écrire, et me ramène vers le tango que j’aime. Celui où l’homme est là pour mettre en valeur la femme, et non pour montrer tous les trucs qu’il sait faire. Javier Rodriguez sait qu’il sait faire plein de choses, n’a pas besoin d’en rajouter, et la met en valeur magnifiquement. Respect. Le corollaire: je ne l’ai même pas inclus dans le titre de mon billet. Mais je suis sûr qu’il me pardonnera.

Depuis cette soirée au Sunderland, il y a maintenant 2 ans, j’ai toujours voulu écrire sur le sujet. Je crois que c’était lors de la même soirée qu’Osvaldo Zotto et Lorena Ermocida nous avaient gratifiés d’une magnifique et prenante démonstration improvisée, mais alors beaucoup plus sobre et moins surfaite que celle qu’il a donnée en mai passé à l’occasion des Tangofolies, avec une autre (sa nouvelle?) partenaire.

Je vois une énorme différence d’effet entre 2 danseurs expérimentés qui dansent pour eux, leur propre plaisir, qui communiquent tout d’abord entre eux, ce qui naturellement rayonne et est perçu par le public, et les mêmes qui dansent pour offrir une représentation au public. L’une est improvisée, sobre, alors que l’autre est chorégraphiée et en jette. L’éternel dilemme des démonstrations: gymnastique ou tango? Ce que veut le public, pardi! Et vu que souvent, le public veut voir les gestes les plus exceptionnels, ceux qu’ils ont sué pour apprendre durant le stage du week-end, cela explique pourquoi la plupart des démonstrations, pour moi, sont juste trop.

Surtout quand je regarde encore une fois cette vidéo.

Certains aiment mettre des noms sur les styles, quant à moi, je ne suis pas sûr de pouvoir le faire sans me tromper. La mère de toutes nos grandes sources plus ou moins fiables (Wikipedia, donc) nous dirait que c’est du Tango Salon, du style Villa Urquiza, vu que c’est de ce quartier qu’elle vient, près du Sunderland, et là-bas qu’elle danse depuis qu’elle est môme.

J’avais voulu aller voir un cours avec elle, mais je suis arrivé devant un interphone et une porte fermée dans le quartier de Boedo. Elle allait avoir un enfant. Elle est mariée et danse maintenant avec Ezequiel Paludi. Il semblerait que ce ne soit malheureusement plus la même chose. Cet autre témoignage va dans la même direction . Votre avis?

Par ailleurs, saviez-vous que Geraldine a joué dans Assassination Tango de Robert Duvall?

We keep forgetting there is an unwritten rule regarding owning a blog and having closed comments.  That is, it is not allowed.  You will be shunned by your blog community and you will be considered less than human.  If your blog does not allow for disagreements and attacks, yours is a lost cause.  However, if you open up your comments and never comment on your comments (like Deby at TangoSpam), people will rarely leave comments at all, but then it is acceptable.

This little rant comes after attempting to post a comment on Arlene’s London Tango Pages.  Someone had written Arlene to ask about Javier Rodriguez.  After reading the 23 comments that followed, we felt we had a comment worth contributing.  However, since we censor our blog (other people’s words, not ours), it seems that Arlene chose to censor our comment.  We forgot that we live in an eye-for-an-eye world.

Regardless, we do feel that our comment was worth sharing and might have been useful to the individual with the question.  This is what we wrote:

Firstly, a little late on reading and commenting on this post… Secondly, we apologize for leaving a comment when we do not allow comments on our blog. We usually do not comment on others’ blogs since we do not provide the same “courtesy” to our readers. However, we just couldn’t pass this up

Let us begin with a quote a dear (tango) friend of ours made about Tango and Javier: “Not knowing who Geraldine and Javier are would be the same as saying you love ballet and you don’t know who Baryshnikov is.”

We are constantly amazed when people who love Tango have no idea who this couple are (were) and this is a thought we have had even before we came to Buenos Aires and before we finally decided to try a private lesson with Javier. We booked a private with him long after arriving in Buenos Aires and only after seeing him perform in Sunderland (a milonga here in Buenos Aires). It was there that we saw just how incredible and respected he is. After his performance with Stella Misse, the locals (including many milongueros) were on their feet and the sound of applause all but raised the roof!

Javier does not teach choreography unless it’s specifically what you are looking for. He dances an improvised Tango and his performances are improvised (unless it’s an OBVIOUS choreography). Whether he dances big or small is completely dependent on the space he has. There hasn’t been a dancer/teacher here who has said you should dance small all the time. In fact, we’ve been told the complete opposite: When you have the space, use it!

Javier’s lessons have completely opened our eyes to what Tango is here in Buenos Aires. He has helped us to understand how porteños view and feel about Tango … how to dance with male and female energies… etc, etc… We can completely vouch for Tango Pilgrim and Tina Tango’s comments. Javier can blow your mind and change your life with regards to tango. And he can do it in just one lesson.

Depending what level your Tango is at, relying only on a local teacher can be the worst thing you do unless you have watched videos of the milongueros and Javier (for an example of a younger Tango dancer) and feel like your local teacher is offering a very similar Tango. In our community, the majority of the teachers are teaching a Tango that is not found here in Buenos Aires.

We cannot recommend Javier enough to you, Yabotil. He is an incredible dancer and an incredible teacher. However, one must always be aware that not every teacher is for every student. If you didn’t catch him this time around, maybe next time. Good luck!

Perhaps if we hadn’t apologized then our comment would have been posted   We also could have easily commented under a pseudonym, but we wanted to be honest!?  Oh well… We keep saying we’ll open up the comments on our blog one day.  We’ll finally give in to the peer pressure and be accepted by the popular crowd!

SALES of Glasvegas’ self-titled debut album have rocketed by over 1000 per-cent since they were nominated for this year’s Mercury Music Prize.

The Glaswegian four-piece reached number two with their first album only to be kept off the coveted top slot by the hotly-awaited new album from Metallica.

The Invisible, Friendly Fires and Sweet Billy Pilgrim have also benefitted hugely from appearing on the respected music prize’s short list.

Music retailer HMV has tracked the sales of the 12 shortlisted albums before and after all the bands were nominated.

The store has revealed sales of all the albums are up 107 per cent since the shortlist was announced last month.

All the artists have benefitted, but it is Scots favourites Glasvegas who have come out on top of the sales league with a massive 1103 per cent increase.

HMV’s Gennaro Castaldo said: “The impact of the Barclaycard Mercury Prize becomes more pronounced every year, and the award is now arguably the most significant platform for promoting new and independent music amongst the record-buying public.
 
“Just being shortlisted can give an artist a huge boost in profile and sales, particularly if they then go on to give show-stealing performances at the awards show.

The winner of the Barclaycard Mercury Prize will be revealed at a star-studded bash on September 8, 2009.

Made it to Hobson, Montana, last night.

The night before (July 23) I was in Geraldine, Montana.  I only covered about 40km after leaving Fort Benton around 4:30 pm, because of my bank card problems.

Geraldine was great.  I rolled into town and immediately got directions to the local municipal park as a place to camp.  The park was good, with and hand-pump well, a water fountain, and a complete working public bathroom.   Not long after I arrived in the park, two little girls and one boy kind of wandered into the park.  They were clearly eyeing me, and kept kind of gradually moving closer.  It was like that ninja cat video: each time I looked up they’d snuck a bit nearer.  I said hello; eventually they were near enough I could hear them talking.  One said something about how some people just don’t have homes, and I thought this would be a good time to interject that no, I did in fact have a home (which I guess is technically not true for the time being, but still), I was just on a trip.  From then on, it was a firestorm of fascinated questions from the three, plus two more boys who arrived on bikes.  These kids invited me to the community pool event that evening, but I declined.  (I have no swimsuit, and I needed to cook.)  Still, on their way to and from the pool, the kids (two of them at least) would call out and wave.

Yesterday (July 24) was a crappy day to ride, but I stayed in fairly good spirits.  I made 100 km.  Headwinds all day.  I need some prevailing westerly winds, really.  They haven’t really been prevailing lately, I gotta say.  Anyway, I stopped in a town called Stanford for lunch, and then had to climb the most massive hill from a wide river valley to a higher plateau.  There are some interesting rock formations in this country.  I will post pictures sometime later, when I’m not running on batteries.  My elevation here on the plains is as high as at Rogers Pass, maybe higher.  After I got onto that plateau, I saw storm clouds brewing to the south-west, headed in my direction.  So I busted ass for Hobson and put down in a park.  Not really an appropriate park for camping, but most of the town was at a fair in Lewistown so nobody bothered me.  I saw a man working in his fabulous garden and asked him about some of the veggies I didn’t recognise, one of which was mature asparagus.  He busted off a shoot and gave it to me, to eat raw.  It was great.  Now I’m about to leave Hobson.  Hoping for good north-westerly winds.  I aim to be in Billings tomorrow night.
