Gertrude Yorkes was quite possibly unique.

See, I’ve been reading up on superheroes recently and there’s so much happening there that confuses me and has forced me to look deeper at a genre I love.

I don’t know what to make of  Power Girl. I find Wonder Woman a rather scary unachievable ideal.  Stephanie Brown’s dead. Gertrude Wilder, one of the few gorgeously realistic teens, is long gone. Birds of Prey has been cancelled. And Ms Marvel’s a walking screw-up of confusion.

What’s happened to these characters? What’s happened to the women of comics?

It may be that you think I’ve not been reading the comics that present women in a graphic light. But I have.  Tamara Drewe. Luba. Teen Titans. Supergirl (although that’s just one messed up series -she’s an angel, she’s a teen, she’s a what-now-right-now?) 

So what’s got me so riled up?

The fact that I don’t even know how to refer to these women freaks me out. Are they superheroines? Superheroes? Female Supheroes?

The fact that Ms Marvel started out so gloriously and then got screwed over in  a series of plot lines makes me wince and feel sick.  This woman is the Wonder Woman of DC. She’s strong. She’s powerful. She’s gloriously inspiring. She can have it all. And yet, when it comes to it, we knock her back and rape her or depower her or make her into a boozehound. Can you see that happening to Batman? Or Superman? Can you see these characters being moulded into such fascinating icons and then being ripped to shreds? Ms Marvel could have been something brilliant.  I don’t want her to be a Mary-Sue. I want her to address what happened to her, address her issues with Rogue, address it all and come out stronger. Without getting knocked up. Or turned into some proto-fascist poorly constructed icon of masculinity wrapped up in heels and a sash.

And I want more Gerts. I want smart, funny and sexy women who don’t look like twiglets with breasts. I want stomachs and calves and damn it I want fat. I want characters that stand up and say they don’t know what to do. I want people that crumble in the face of the darkness and then pull themselves together and act like the heroes they are. I want real people who are gifted with the opportunity to make something beautiful from their lives and I want them to be nervous, scared, thrilled, passionate, funny, honest, angry and true to life every simple step of the way.

Sometimes the most simple situation in the world is enough. Sometimes life is about the girl who sits and has her lunch in the toilet cubicle because she knows she’ll get bullied if she goes outside.  Or the woman with a superpower and cancer and the knowledge that this is the only bad guy she can’t fight.

This is my charter. This is my plea. I don’t want my heroes to wear dungarees. Spandex can look wicked sexy. But I’m just sick of costume being the limit of character development in so many cases.

And, I suppose I’m also saying, give me Ms Marvel. Give me her and I will give you something great.

I know it hurts and it’s hard to move past. This has came up with dh and I. He has accepted so many friends on his Facebook that are girls and I don’t like it. I mean like over 50 or 75 of his friends are girls. I have TWO guy friends on mine and they were friends, like brothers and not ex’s. I asked if any were old girlfriends and he says no. He leaves his Facebook open all the time on our shared computer so I know he’s not trying to hide anything, but I stil don’t like him talkin or reminiscing about girls he went to high school with.

I got a friend request from my ex-boyfriend from high school and I will not accept him! It’s just not right to sit and talk with ex-boyfriends or girlfriends when you’re married. (Just my opinion) It’s just not right to share your time and emotions, laughter, etc. with someone else like that when you’re married. I know my ex-boyfriend and I would be chatting all the time and laughing about old times and it will stir up old feelings and “what ifs”, etc. and I know I just don’t want to go there emotionally.

On his part, Pöttering extended his thanks towards the Greek government and opposition for their support of the Lisbon Treaty. “I am probably the last one since 1979’s first elections. I witnessed Greece entering the European Union in 1981,” he said, adding “countries which have not yet ratified the Lisbon Treaty should look up to Greece and set it as an example.” Reciprocating, Karamanlis stressed that Greece will continue supporting the European Parliament’s initiatives and look forward to the enhancement of the institution’s role.

Gert Wilders blev (født d. 6. September 1963 i Venlo, Limburg, Holland) er en hollandsk politiker og han ser sig selv som fortaler for begrænsninger indenfor immigration til Holland, særligt fra ikke-vestlige lande.

Man kan så spørge sig selv, hvordan at en mand som Gert Wilders kan se sig selv som fortaler for ytringsfriheden, når alt han bruger sin ytringsfrihed på, er at nedgøre andre menneskers religion.

Gert Wilders har ikke blot nøjes med at tale dårligt om andres religion, han har ligefrem gået hen og skabt en film om det og for at det skulle stikke lidt ekstra har han brugt en en film titel som er Arabisk.

Filmen hedder Fitna og betyder oversat til Dansk “Propaganda”.

Jeg har ikke selv set filmen, for jeg bryder mig ikke om at der er folk der tjener penge på at tilsvine andre menneskers religion.

Jeg er selv Kristen, og ville føle det krænkende hvis en ikke-Kristen kritiker gik hen og lavede en film om min religion og gav den titlen det onde. Heldigvis er der mange lande som har taget skarp afstand fra Gert Wilders og den propaganda som han spreder, så jeg vil også gerne gøre mit til at han ikke skal have lov til at fører den krig som han så åbenlyst gerne vil sætte igang.

Desværre er der selvfølgeligt også de mennesker som er i samme kategori som Gert Wilders, og i Danmark kan vi nævne Søren Espersen og Pia Kjærsgård som har støttet Gert Wilders i alt hvad han sagde.

Faktisk så intenst at hvis Gert Wilders ville bede alle hans tilhængere hoppe ud fra runde tårn, så ville Søren være den første der ramte jorden.

Gert Wilders har foreslået et totalt forbud af Koranen i Holland, og man kan spørge sig selv hvordan at en mand som Gert Wilder kan have så høje og egoistiske tanker om sig selv, at han ligefrem ønsker ved lov at forbyde andre at udøve deres religion.

Samtidigt har Gert Wilders påstået at Islam ikke er en religion på lige fod med andre religioner, men Gert Wilders begrunder hans forslag om et totalitært forbud mod koranen skyldes nogen voldelige passager i den som ikke hører hjemme.

Man kan så spørge sig selv, hvornår Gert Wilders sidst har haft en Bibel i hånden, men med en udtalelse som denne viser det jo at det nok ikke er sket de sidste mange år.

Samtidigt beskylder Gert Wilders socialisterne for at være skyld i at flere muslimer får adgang til vores lande, og til at praktiserer deres tro. Han begrunder det med at man ikke kan købe en bibel i lande som Iran, Irak, Saudi Arabien og Pakistan.

Hvad Gert Wilders ikke rigtig har formået at fortælle folk som han snakker med, at de ting som han udtaler sig om ikke er konkrete facts.

Hvis Gert Wilders i stedet for at rejse rundt til lande som Danmark, England, og andre europæiske lande, tog sig sammen og besøgte et ikke-vestligt land, tror jeg også at manden ville få øjnene op for hvordan verden hænger sammen.

D. 18 Marts i 2008 roste Gert Wilders i et interview, den tidligere Danske Statsminister Anders Fogh Rasmussen for håndteringen af muhammed-krisen, og beklagede at Hollands Statsminister “Er en kujon, som ikke står fast på forfatningens ord om ytringsfrihed, men i stedet har stillet sig på Talebans side”.

Heldigvis var Anders Fogh Rasmussen en voksen og fornuftig mand og tog skarp afstand fra Gert Wilders udtalelser.

Og ligesom vores tidligere Statsminister Anders Fogh Rasmussen fordømmer jeg også Gert Wilders udtalelser om muslimer ligesom jeg fordømmer hans film, og de folk der har valgt at se den.

Selvfølgeligt har Gert Wilders fået en ny lege kammerat, nemlig den ligeså talentløse politiker Søren Espersen fra Dansk Folkeparti. Søren Espersen var hurtigt ude med en kommentar efter vores statsminister havde fordømt Gert Wilders, men det gør jo kun at Søren Espersen har bidraget med yderligere humor omkring hans til personlighed som  får folk til ikke mindre end at skrige af grin når han udtaler sig til pressen.

Så Søren, gør os alle sammen en tjeneste og bliv ved med at leverer underholdning til os, så kan de rigtige politikere fra socialdemokraterne tage sig af den politiske del på christiansborg.

Snart har Robert och Gert gått klart.. jag undrar hur många kilo som de har gått ner under sin tripp…
Det som är bra är att de har satt fokus på “pittcancer” och att de faktiskt fått in 4 miljoner till cancerfonden…
Själv skulle jag kunna tänka mig att göra något för bröstcancern.. och inte bara den där tråkiga galan som är i oktober varje år.. det börjar bli ut tjatat.. och det behövs förändringar… för att något ska fungera…
Och för att få in pengar…
Jag skulle vilja göra något.. fast gå från Haparanda till Ystad orkar jag inte… och jag har inga direkta idéer…

Det jag undrar över är att faktiskt folk inte lär sig… Man ska inte sola.. man ska inte vara i solen utan kläder… jag kan inte förstå att människor tycker att en kropp som är solbränd (och då betoning på bränd) är vackert.. det är inte fräscht med en rygg som fjällar… för man vet vad som kan komma… en liten fläck.. och den där fläcken är allt annat än snäll..
Jag sitter i skuggan.. och jag har kläder på mig… för man blir brun ändå.. även om man sitter i skuggan så blir man brun.. de uv strålarna kommer åt dig även om du sitter under en ek och luktar på blommorna.. och vilket är bäst.. att man får behålla luktsinnet hela tiden och slippa känna lukten av cytostatika.. och att ha en kropp som är frisk… Det är ju bara att gå in på närmsta badplast så ser man att folk inte tänker…
om 10-15 år så lär de komma.. en del betydligt tidigare.. och så får de ett besked av doktorn.. och då kan de stå där med sina men…
Att solarier överhuvudtaget får finnas kvar är för mig en gåta…

After leaving Dyl’s with a slight sense of surrealism that accompanies a beer induced hangover, I stopped at Nanaga Farm Stall. Anyone who travels between PE and Grahamstown knows Nanaga, usually intimately. They make the best pies in the land, and what better way to quell throbbing temples? I had a turkey pie, two Compral and an OJ, breakfast of champions.

I got to JBay and found it to be pretty much flat, bar a two foot wave at Point (which is usually the beginners spot, or the spot where people come when the wave isn’t nicely lined up elsewhere). Surf starved for almost two weeks by that stage, I was in the water within 57 seconds and happy as a kid with a cupcake. It was so warm I surfed in boardies, and was super stoked (I can say that because were talking about surfing now) to meet Bruce Gold, the hippie surf legend of JBay. Bruce literally has lived to surf, and everyone knows him. He paddled past me with a big grin and said ‘Heeeeey, isn’t this the life?’ wearing a helmet with flames painted down the side and busting a long white beard, skinny legs and a baby blue tank of a board. Indeed, sunny, uncrowded, clear water on a Friday. Tell me about it! I’m also pretty sure I saw a shark, but let’s not dwell on such pee-in-pant thoughts…by the way the pic of Bruce isn’t mine, I scooped it off the net…

I got to Plettenberg Bay round 3pm and headed to Sarah’s place of work in central Plett. Now before getting started on tales about Plett (which seem to be stamped with photographic authority all over facebook, thanks Sah) let me tell you about Sarah Kate Aitken. Being one day older than me, Sarah and I grew up together in Hilton. She was always the first one to do something naughty, dated the most dangerous dudes and always had the most fun! She once got her thumb stuck in a leash, and was dragged for 500m by a cow named Bodie when she was about 11, she crashed her motor bike more times than I can remember, dances like nobody else…and claims to be way more mature than me. But I now have photographic evidence of her hugging a barman named Gert with a mullet, while pointing to a chalkboard with the words Ass Cheese on it. After only one drink. Now who is more mature in this scenario – the person who got her to do the above and took a picture of it, or Sah? Ha! I think this is a highly debateable topic…

Now I’ve never been to Plett before, but it seems that the life and soul of party life is a bar called Flash Backs. Appropriately named because the next day all I had to remember it by was flash backs…of Southern Comfort on the rocks and some blue drink called Labido. I won’t go into boring drinking details but the proof is in the pudding. Check out the double diva evil twin photo, and then check out hung over sorry for themselves morning after girls.

After dragging our sorry asses out of bed, Sarah’s man Clint the snake expert cum journo joined us for a day of wild life orientation in the rain. Using her expert socialising skills, Sah gained us complimentary tickets to the Elephant Sanctuary, the Cheetah Sanctuary and the Birds of Eden Sanctuary. Which was all well and good, until it transpired that she told everyone I was a famous travel writer who was going to give them all free marketing. Ah hah. That’s my Sah!

Anyway, picture three people who reek of alcohol, stumbling through the rain to get to the elephant tour on time, pretending to be representing the journalism community of South Africa. Actually, we probably did a pretty accurate job! Except we didn’t have any cocaine on hand. I digress. It was damn cool hanging out with the Elephants, and we got covered in Elephant snot and mud during the part where we got to touch them. Was super cool.

Next came the trip to the Cheetah Sanctuary, by which time I needed to drink a can of Coke and eat Frito’s just to stay upright. We had the most bizarre guide, who sounded a bit like he was more hung over than us, or completely stoned, and he took us through all the different cat camps. To his credit he did the best explanation of genetic evolution I have ever heard. “The cat see’s orange, orange, orange, brown, brown, brown, black, black, black and that goes into his eyes and then into his genes and the babies are born with orange, orange, orange, brown, brown, brown…” This was probably the point that we started to get a little hysterical.

Touching the Cheetahs was pretty damn cool, and I think all of the people in our group were very in awe of the whole situation. That is, until one lady who had been smiling serenely throughout the tour with the occasional slightly odd comment thrown in for good measure, had her turn. She crouched down next to the Cheetah, put her hand on him and then looked up at all of us and sort of half yelled the words “Imagine now, if this is how beautiful one of God’s creatures can be, imagine how does Jesus look?”

Stunned silence. Our genetic evolution expert guide looked at all of us, hoping one of us would answer her, and after seeing my face crumple into uncontrollable snorts of laughter while Sarah actually slapped her hand over her mouth, he replied with “Ay lady, I have never seen Jesus so I have no idea”. I thought I had myself under control when we were leaving the pen shortly afterwards, until Sah looked me dead in the face and sang “Aaaaaaaallelujah…”

Next up we hit a really cool Vineyard called Bramon to have lunch. It was the most awesome food, a big loaf of bread straight out the oven that comes with various toppings that one can choose. We sat down, and our waiter came up to explain the ordering process. “Haaai guys, okay so the way it works is you put a tick next to the item you would like, but the idea is to share, so don’t all go and tick the smoked snoek, because then you’ll just get a fuck load of smoked snoek” with which he turned on his heel and dashed off to shock the shit out of the next group of customers! Dude, Plett’s inhabitants are highly, highly entertaining.

After lunch we went to the Birds of Eden Sanctuary by which time it was pissing down. We trotted through the rain forest, ha ha, and checked out all the birds brave enough to face this day, and I actually managed to make friend with a cool purple and red parrot effort (I am no twitcher that’s for sure). He/She jumped on my arm and we cruised the hood together, whistling and making friends. Until I got shat on by some sour lady in the refreshment stand and had to let poor He/She go back to his/her boring friends. Then a pigeon landed on Sarah’s head, and to her credit she didn’t scream like I would have because that thing came out of nowhere!

We ended off the say with a visit to the Lawnwood Snakepark that Clint’s mate and his fiancé run. It was over board creepy checking out all these massive snakes, and I was actually secretly relieved I didn’t have to put one round my neck like I had claimed I was going to. Big Talk Fourie! But it is worth a visit if you’re in the area, with over 200 snakes to ogle over.

The next day I got up at 6am to start my trek to Stellenbosch, the land of the wine and rocks. Lots of rocks, some of them made up of geographic matter and some of them made up my genetic matter. I wonder how the Cheetah guide would have described that one?

Big up to Rikki for hooking us up with comps to all the animal gigs, and to Sah for letting me sleep on her uber leather couch and cooking me the best Thai chicken curry my hungover self has ever eaten. You rock, and I guess you are the more mature one, Alllllelujah!

As I discussed yesterday here, Judge Nancy Gertner of the District of Massachusetts agreed to allow web “narrowcasting” of an oral argument on the motions regarding the constitutionality of various provisions of the Copyright Act filed by a defendant (and his Harvard Law Professor attorney) in a file sharing copyright infringement case before her.  Her opinion (pdf) contained a well-reasoned decision to break with the federal court tradition of excluding cameras in the courtroom.

Now, as reported by the blogs from Wired, attorneys for the record companies have filed a motion (pdf) for a stay of the order pending their request for a writ of mandamus to the First Circuit.  In other words, the record companies are so scared of the oral argument they’re going to file an emergency motion with the First Circuit Court of Appeals (the court that reviews Judge Gertner’s decisions) asking for an order prohibiting her from allowing a third-party to use the camera and audio feeds already in the courtroom to narowcast the oral argument online.

All I can say is, What are they so scared of?  As Judge Gertner pointed out in her opinion, the RIAA and record companies for a long while now have claimed that they can’t use everyone who illegally file shares copyrighted music, but they can try to publicize their lawsuits to effect some “general deterrence”– persuade others not to share music illegally because of the threat of being sued. At the same time, many in the on-line world have an extremely negative view of the record companies and the RIAA.  You’d think that they would (reluctantly) welcome the idea that the cyber-community would be able to hear their side of the story, at least as it relates to the constitutionality of these statutes.  Certainly there aren’t issues of confidentiality here (meaning that the record companies will be discussing confidential trade secrets or other secret information as part of their oral argument); this is almost pure legal argument.  So now, they look like real weasels who are so afraid of any public exposure (except the limited press of “we won” after the conclusion of a case) that they will file emergency motions to avoid being heard and seen on real time.  Because it’s oral argument, there will be no testimony presented, and thus the ultimate decision and outcome should not be affected by the presence or absence of the narrowcast.  If the narrowcast won’t have any likely affect on the outcome, why would the record companies spend at least $30,000 on this writ of mandamus (maybe even $100,000)? What are they so scared of?

• Are they afraid that Judge Gertner, a left-leaning, pro-individual kind of jurist, will read them the riot act?  I find that hard to believe.  Even if she doesn’t like the record companies, any reasonable jurist (especially a district court) is extremely hesitant to declare federal law unconstitutional without strong appellate court support.  So far, the Copyright Act has withstood just about every constitutional challenge levied against it. She may ask tough questions, but on the law, the record companies have to know they have the upper hand.
• Are they afraid that there will be some sort of crowd reaction by the people in the gallery (most of whom, I would guess, would not be sympathetic to the record companies) and/or that the crowd may be more likely to make a scene on camera, which may be embarrassing?  Perhaps, but that also doesn’t give Judge Gertner the benefit of the doubt that she will control her own courtroom.  There aren’t too many federal judges I know that would stand by and allow a spectator to even bring a newspaper into the courtroom, much less applaud, protest, or say one single word, before the Courtroom Security Officers and the U.S. Marshals are sicked on them like hungry predators.
• Are they afraid that people will record the stream and then re-edit it to make misleading videos?  Once again, that would be a difficult thing, considering the low level streaming (anyone could easily spot edits).
• Or, are they just afraid that their lead attorney will say something he or she regrets at the hearing, and it will be blasted all over the country? I don’t think so, because if there’s one thing I know about trial attorneys, it’s that a firm ego is necessary for the job… if you go in doubting yourself, you’ll be a trainwreck.
• Are they afraid that it will further undermine their reputation in the U.S.?  Probably not.  If anything, as I mentioned before, it would give the record companies a chance to present their side–uncensored. And, if the Judge rules in the record company’s favor (particularly regarding the constitutional issues) it will give the skeptics in cyberspace an opportunity to understand the foundation of the ruling.

So, I’m completely befuddled.  Anyone else have any thoughts?  Leave a comment.

Vu les conditions dans lesquelles la relève théâtrale québécoise tente de survivre et le peu de ressources dont elle bénéficie, le Théâtre de L’Ingérence revient pour une deuxième année consécutive avec Le Grand Événement de la Relève Théâtrale, parrainé par François Papineau.

En 2007, Le théâtre de l’Ingérence propose l’idée de produire un événement qui réunirait la relève afin de renforcer la promotion et la visibilité de leurs créations. La première édition de cette soirée fût plus qu’une réussite, toutes les compagnies approchées acceptèrent l’invitation et y présentèrent leurs prochaines productions.

L’objectif du Grand Événement de la Relève Théâtrale :

- Promouvoir les jeunes compagnies de théâtre

- Offrir aux jeunes compagnies de présenter un extrait de leur prochaine production

- Donner la chance aux jeunes compagnies de théâtre de se préparer et de s’organiser face au milieu du travail

- Offrir une visibilité aux jeunes compagnies face à leurs pairs

- Permettre aux jeunes compagnies de créer des liens, des contacts avec leurs pairs

La 1ière édition :

- L’an dernier le Grand Événement de la relève Théâtrale a attiré plus d’une centaine de personnes provenant du milieu du théâtre

- Huit compagnies provenant de la relève ont présenté des extraits de leur prochaine production

- Parmi celles qui ont présenté, une compagnie s’est vue offrir une bourse pour le soutien de leur production

- Une autre s’est fait offrir de faire partie de la prochaine programmation d’une salle de spectacle de renom

L’équipe

Jean-Sébastien Courchesne

Co-fondateur du Théâtre de l’Ingérence et également de Créations les Indigestes, Jean-Sébastien est finissant de l’École Supérieure de Théâtre cuvée 2007. En plus de jouer dans de nombreuses pièces et d’avoir fait quelques apparitions télé, il a écrit deux textes pour le théâtre, soit Vodka et kalachnikov (2006) et À 12 ans j’ai mangé un modèle à coller (2007). Il a aussi réalisé deux mises en scène.

Étienne Jacques

Depuis sa sortie de l’École Supérieure de Théâtre de l’UQAM, en mai 2007, il a tenu différents rôles au théâtre, entre autres dans Vodka et Kalachnikov, À 12 ans j’ai mangé un modèle à coller et Contes en tranches séparées mécaniquement tous produits par Créations les Indigestes. En février 2008 il a tenu le rôle d’Edward dans Quelqu’un pour Veiller sur Moi, produit par le Théâtre de l’Ingérence. Il a également participé au Festival TransAmérique en mai dernier, et y a tenu le rôle du motocycliste dans la production La Marea mis en scène par Mariano Pensotti.

Mathieu Marleau

Formé à l’École Supérieure de Théâtre, Mathieu Marleau n’a jamais cessé d’entreprendre des projets. Il compte déjà plusieurs productions à son actif, comme Sous L’Âme du Corps, Enviolées Nocturnes et Histoires de Nez. Il détient une formation en danse aux Ateliers de danse moderne de Montréal, et a joué dans plusieurs productions théâtrales dont La Chambre noire de Patrice Tremblay. Récemment, il a réalisé la mise en scène du texte de Frank McGuinness, Quelqu’un pour veiller sur moi.
