…times, and I hadn’t heard from him in a few days. I think we can all smell where this one was going, right? And then I was heading to see a band play in Shepherd’s Bush when I received a text. A text telling me that he wasn’t great at relationships. That he didn’t like them; couldn’t do them. And, well, cricket season was a’comin’.

I was righteously indignant at the presumption that we were having, or indeed building, a relationship. Excuse me for being all equal opportunities and shit, but I like to give men more than two chances to irritate or bore me before I commit to anything, and that includes committing to the decision about whether or not I’d consider the committment of a relationship.

And then, oh my fuck, he’d made a tactical error of grotesque proportions. I’m sure most of us have received variations on a theme of thanks, but no thanks. No big deal, and I knew how important cricket was to the motherfucking loser him. But he’d already told me about using the cricket excuse to avoid seeing a previous girl who he just didn’t like all that much.

Well, mister drunken marriage proposal, tell me you hate me, tell me you’re indifferent. Tell me anything, but don’t fucking give me a recycled get-out clause involving cricket. That’s just rude.

The Get Out Clause, an unsigned band from Manchester in the UK, did just that; they played in front of 80 different CCTVs around Manchester, and then asked for the video via Freedom of Information Act letters. (About 25% of the CCTV owners complied with the law and turned them over.) The result isn’t too bad.”

The title is strange….the idea is amazing…

A band from England (Get Out Clause) could not afford a film/production crew to make a music video. It would have cost then a good few thousand pounds to put a professional music video together, so they decided to use what was around them – CCTV Cameras that record streets and shops.

There are 13 Million CCTV Cameras all recording in England and Get Out Clause decided to use 80 of them, on streets and even in buses! Once they had been recorded by these cameras they used Britiains Data Protection Act to request the footage that was shot of them. Now they just needed from cheap video editing software and hay prestro!

Heres the video:

Some footage is really funny!

Hat tip to Matthew Chamberlin of Clearcast Digital Media here in Miami for pointing me in his recent blog post to this incredbly creative video project by the UK band Get Out Clause.

Now, the fact that this video has been up on YouTube for months and I’m just discovering it now may speak more to how unplugged-in I am to the indie rock scent, but my takeaway from this is how virtually any organization of any size can use the power of social media to come up with great ideas that both make a powerful disruptive statement and allow them to market their message or product virally to potentially millions of viewers.

Backstory as told at the Torygraph is that this Manchester band thumbed their nose at the CCTV-laden modern British security state by locating and playing in front of 80 closed-circuit surveillance camera all around the city — and then demanding they be given the video footage free of charge under Britain’s freedom-of-information filings!

Filmed in Spring of 2007, since first airing in December it has been seen by a couple hundred thousand viewers on YouTube. Watch what happens with viewership now that the Telegraph story has just come out!

Low budget, viral marketing with a statement, which leverages the power of social media. A real “power of Web 2.0″ lesson by anyone’s definition …
