deb http://ubuntu.org.ua/ getdeb/

wget http://archive.getdeb.net/install_deb/getdeb-repository_0.1-1~getdeb1_all.deb && dpkg -i getdeb-repository_0.1-1~getdeb1_all.deb

Si prefiere añadir su repositorio manualmente, entonces usted tendrá que añadir la siguiente línea a sus /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu karmic-getdeb apps

Y despues agregar la llave:

wget -q -O- http://archive.getdeb.net/getdeb-archive.key | sudo apt-key add -

The GetDeb web site offers the newest versions of Ubuntu software, which may not have hit the offici

The GetDeb web site offers the newest versions of Ubuntu software, which may not have hit the official repositories yet. They have added a new feature which allows you to add a line to your software sources, so that you can download the latest releases directly through Synaptic. They are only providing updates for Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10, though I believe there is a legacy site for older versions of Ubuntu.

To add the GetDeb repository, open the System menu, select Administration, then Software Sources. Select the “Other Software” tab, then click the Add button at the bottom left and enter the following line:

deb http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu karmic-getdeb apps

You will be prompted to reload your software sources, however if you do, you will receive a GPG error message, as you haven’t added the key yet.

Open a terminal and enter the following text:

wget -O- http://archive.getdeb.net/getdeb-archive.key | sudo apt-key add -

Once this has been accepted, you can open Synaptic and reload the repositories and you will now have access to the latest and greatest Ubuntu software. Just a note of caution – remember these aren’t official Ubuntu releases so there is always the chance that you may bork your system by downloading something incompatible. Always back up before you do anything silly!

I think this will be very useful for mainstream software like Firefox or Open Office. Firefox 3.5 was released at the end of June, but wasn’t automatically available to Jaunty users. There are a lot of packages that I would be hesitant to upgrade, but I would certainly want to try the newest versions of, for example, The Gimp or Open Office as soon as they were available, and this enables me to do that easily.

One of the best ways to get updated software for Ubuntu Linux, as well as other Debian-based distros, is from GetDeb.net. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used their packages to get an update that isn’t available from official Ubuntu repositories or PPA’s.

They’ve recently launched an updated site for users of Ubuntu 9.04 and newer, and one of the great new benefits is that they now have a repository you can add to your sources.list. You can either manually add their repo and key, or you can do it even more easily by downloading their getdeb package which will automatically add their repo and repo’s PGP signing key.

If you’re needing software for older versions of Ubuntu, or want to use the familiar website interface you already know and love, you can use their legacy website that remembers all of the users who signed up with them.

Unfortunately, if you have a free account with their old site you’ll need to create a new account to use their new site. I used their contact form to email the devs about not being able to log in, and Vadim Peretokin informed me that he doesn’t believe the user database was migrated to the new site. It may be a pain to have to create a new account, but it is free, and it only takes a few minutes to create the account and validate it from the email they’ll send you.

Either way, you’ll definitely want to check out the new GetDeb website and repository. It will make your life easier as you try to use newer versions of software than is in the official repositories and you won’t have to compile any code to use them, either.

And now for something completely different. By different I mean short. If you have been looking for

And now for something completely different. By different I mean short.

If you have been looking for a great XML editor I would recommend XML Copy Editor. The original goal of this post was to show you how to download the code and all of the dependencies needed to run XML Copy Editor. The last time I downloaded XML Copy Editor it did not come in a ready-to-run form for Kubuntu. I had to download all sorts of dependencies and cut the heads off of a few chickens to get it to work, but work it did and I was happy.

After installing Kubuntu again I found that I needed to revisit the installation of XML Copy Editor. Wouldn’t you know? I forgot to take notes on how I did it. And it was not trivial the last time I did it.

As it turns out there is a web site that contains ready-to-run, pre-baked versions of all sorts of program including XML Copy Editor. The site is getdeb and I also recommend it as a place to find software you might have thought was unavailable on Ubuntu.

I happen to run Kubuntu 64-bit so a search for XML Copy Editor returned XML Copy Editor for Ubuntu Jaunty 32 bit. Scrolling down the page revealed a version available for Ubuntu Jaunty 64 bit which exactly matched my need.

The cat was alive.

These are a few of my favorite things

XML Copy Editor does a number of things rather well:

Checks well-formedness

Validates the XML using DTDs, XSDs, RELAX NG and others

Applies XSL transforms so you can test what it is you are transforming

Executes arbitrary XPath on the current file

Supports the creation of 26 XML-related file types

Do I have to mention that it also uses colored syntax, element folding and a built in web browser?

XML Copy Editor: download it from getdeb. Install it. Use it.

songbird is the best music player available in linux , But a bit unstable sometimes and not so puppy as other populer music players like Banshee and amarok. But it is in active development….. and also based on mozilla code (gecko the engine behind firefox) . It is great player on features and ability to extend just like firefox do. The developers says it is stable enough and version number is 1.xxx, so it is worth to test it……………. perhaps yout got a iTunes killer (almost looks like that) for your ubuntu system.

There is no official .debs for songbird right now . why ubuntu developers put this wonderfull app in repos ? but no prob there is alter way

1. Download from getdeb here is link http://www.getdeb.net/app/Songbird

2. install as usual double click

or

download from the official tar.gz file http://getsongbird.com/

(not deb) no need to install just unzipp and open and run songbird file . it is a unversal binary works on almost every distro.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Getdeb is a web site where you can download the latest and greatest of packages, some of which are i

Getdeb is a web site where you can download the latest and greatest of packages, some of which are in an older form in the regular Ubuntu repository, some of which (like Ubuntu Tweak) have their own repository separately. I find it a very good place to look for new software that has not yet made it into the Ubuntu repository, or is proprietary (like Songbird) and will not be included. Think of it as a heap of goodies, all in one place!

On the home page, I find the Daily Top 10 (on the left hand side under the About link) to be a good place to start. As I am typing this, it contains links to Songbird and Second Life, just two examples of the great things to be found here.

Getdeb automatically recognises the version of Ubuntu you are using, and loads the software which has been built for your version. I find this exceptionally helpful when I am switching from one version to the next. I can tell immediately what is available for the new version. (The versions currently covered are Jaunty, Intrepid and the LTS version, Hardy. All these are covered for both 32 bit and 62 bit systems.)

The software is divided into categories to make searching easy. These are: Audio Tools, Games, Info Management, Productivity, Utilities, Development, Graphics & Design, Internet & Network, System Tools, and Video Tools.

Happy Mother’s Day – and I wish you a joyful software hunt.
