Sometime this summer 3 Americans were detained by the Iranian government. The story has been kind of  pretty vague as far as I can see in the US media but from what I’ve heard the story is this, 3 American students while hiking the beautiful mountians along the Iraq/Iran border, good one dipshits. What about this doesn’t sound right? Well there are a few things! What students decide to go into a county at war to go “hiking”? What parent in their right mind says “Oh sure that’s a great idea! go camping in Iraq!” The biggest puzzle for me is how do 3 American kids get past US military forces to go “hiking” along a  hostile border? We’ve heard for years about Iranian weapons being smuggled across the Iran/Iraq border and being used by terrorist groups and insurgents against American forces. Well if these 3 dipshits can just  boogie up and down the border and the military didn’t seem to notice then “Good one, US armed forces! way to secure the border!” Iranian authorities detianed the 3 “hikers” and are accusing them of spying!! I am really curious to see how this all plays out. Something just doesn’t seem right? Who are these “hikers”, why were they in such a hostile place, and how the fuck did they get there? I know Iran’s biggest adversary  is Israel, did these “hikers” spend any time in Israel or have any connection to Israel? I haven’t heard anything but it would be curious to find out? Were they CIA? I just can’t uderstand how or why and person with 4 or more brain cells would think that would be a cool place to camp?!! If they do end up being spys I guess they’ll be fucked and that’s just part of the job. If they’re not spys I would they should be in a world of shit for just being stupid! So let me tell ya kids, do your homework, don’t do drugs, and for God sake don’t go camping in enemy nations! Sometimes it’s like talkin’ to a brick wall!

Kojarzycie Marylina Mansona? Tak. A Alice’a Coopera? Tego już może nie wszyscy, ale większość zapewne też. Poza tym: Ozzy Osbourne, GG Allin, połowa jakichś tam grup death metalowych. Co ich łączy? Są uważani za przedstawicieli tzw. shock rocka, co oznacza, że oprócz muzyki dają nam (mniej lub bardziej udany) show, który ma szokować (really?). Makijaż czarną kredką, odgryzanie głów nietoperkom, sikanie na scenie i takie tam. Generalnie rzecz biorąc przeważnie wychodzi im to dość kiczowato, ale taki też chyba jest (przynajmniej częściowo) ich zamysł. Niestety, o ile twórczość Ozzy’ego (przez pewien czas) była całkiem niezła, to już muzyka jaką prezentują/owali Marylin, GG czy Alice jest w najlepszym wypadku średnia (na współczesnym metalu się nie znam, więc tę kwestię pominę). Mamy jednak pewnego artystę, którzy dał nam dużą ilość fantastycznych nagrań i tak się składa, że oprócz tego… jest prekursorem całego tzw. gatunku shock rocka.

Jalacy Hawkins urodził się w 1929 roku. Początkowo chciał zostać śpiewakiem operowym i choć po pewnym czasie priorytety mu się zmieniły, to ten pierwiastek operowości słychać w niemal wszystkich jego nagraniach. Muzyki nie porzucił, umiał wszak grać już na pianinie oraz gitarze, a także całkiem nieźle śpiewać. Został więc muzykiem bluesowym. Grał także w obozach wojskowych, kiedy został wysłany na front w trakcie drugiej wojny światowej. Po powrocie do kraju zaczął rozwijać swój niezwykły styl będący połączeniem bluesa, muzyki big bandowej (coś w rodzaju Benny’ego Goodmana, Franka Sinatry) oraz Hawkinsowego nieokrzesania (na marginesie: Jay był mistrzem boksu stanu Alaska).

W 1956 roku Screamin’ Jak Hawkins (bo taki pseudonim przybrał Jalacy Hawkins) nagrał swój największy hit – “I Put a Spell on You”. W trakcie nagrywania cały zespół był pijany, a sam Jay w końcu zaliczył tak zwanego zgona i potem niczego nie pamiętał. A tak się składa, że w trakcie sesji dał naprawdę niezły popis – chrumkał, charczał, krzyczał, jęczał… Posłuchajcie tylko oryginalnego nagrania: LINK. Jako, że były to jeszcze czasy przed rewolucją obyczajową nagranie zostało zakazane przez wiele stacji radiowych jako zbyt obsceniczne i nawiązujące do seksualności.

Mniej więcej w tym samym pewien DJ zaproponował Screamin’ Jayowi, że zapłaci mu 300 dolarów, jeśli ten na początku koncertu wyłoni się z trumny. Nasz sympatyczny Murzynek przystał na tę propozycję, a potem cały pomysł znacznie rozwinął. Zaczął pojawiać się na scenie wyposażony w akcesoria voodoo, ubrany w skórę lamparta. Miał też swoją ulubioną laskę zakończoną czaszką paląca papierosa – nazwał ją Henry. Wszystko to połączone z jego unikalnym stylem wokalnym stworzyło legendarny, szokujący, ale zarazem komiczny i pastiszowy wizerunek Jaya, którego fragment możecie zobaczyć na znajdującym się poniżej koncertowym wykonaniu “I Put a Spell…”.

Hawkins nagrał jeszcze trochę popularnych kawałków (“Frenzy”, “Alligator Wine”, “Little Demon”, “Constipation Blues”), żaden jednak nie powtórzył sukcesu “Spell”. W latach 80tych i 90 tych koncertował on wspólnie chociażby z The Clash czy Nickiem Cavem, jego muzyka była szczególnie popularna w krajach europejskich. Niestety – 12 lutego 20 roku Jay zmarł w Paryżu po operacji tętniaka. Zostawił nam jednak swoją wspaniałą muzykę (na początek polecam płytę “Cow Fingers and Mosquito Pie”)… I przy okazji około 50-70 dzieci na całym świecie.

"Two's Missing" by The Who album art with buttons

The Who album art for the 1987 compilation of hard-to-obtain tracks features a painting by Richard Evans with super-mod-buttons on guitarist Pete Townshend and an enormous “ELVIS FOR EVERYONE” button on rock’n'roll drummer hero, Keith Moon.  It’s probably 4-inches in diameter!

“Two’s Missing” includes the “Can’t Explain” rare b-side “Bald Headed Woman” complete with Jimmy Page guitar solo (“he owned the only fuzz box in the country at that time”),  Rolling Stones covers like “Last Time,” and the Martha & the Vandellas hit “Heatwave.”

I love to buttons in action on record covers, like the MC5, GG Allin, and Thee Makeout Party.  Do you have a favorite?

Grande destaque pra faixa P.F.F, na qual o Príncipe de toda Escrotidão, o vocalista de punk rock GG Allin, famoso por ter presenteado enquanto vivo,  seu público fiel com um banho quente de mijo, sangue, catarro, vômito, sêmen e merda, durante suas apresentações lendárias, recebe uma humilde homenagem de Hank Williams III, um cowpunk que descende da mesma linhagem honrosa de cowboys alcoólatras que o velho Hank Williams, Sr.

Kevin Michael “GG” Allin (August 29, 1956 – June 28, 1993) was an American punk rock singer-songwriter who performed and recorded with many punk-rock groups during his career. Allin is best remembered for his notorious live performances that typically featured wildly transgressive acts such as Allin defecating and urinating onstage, rolling in feces and often consuming excrement, committing self-injury, performing naked, and committing violent actions toward the audience—often doing many of these things simultaneously. Although more notorious for his stage antics than for his wide body of music, he recorded prolifically, not only in the punk rock genre, but also in spoken word, country and Rolling Stones-influenced rock. His politically incorrect lyrics, which often covered subjects such as misogyny, pedophilia and racism, deeply divided opinions of him within the highly politicized punk community. Though he has a devoted cult following, Allin’s music has received mostly negative reviews from critics.

Here is video if the last day GG Allin was alive. He stormed out of his last show after the venue lost power and he proceeded to trash the streets of NYC.

There is a documentary about his life called Hated: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies. You can watch the entire thing after the jump.

On one level, I find this morbidly fascinating.

You put two of my favorite bands of all time, Black Lips and No Age, on the same stage at the same time?

A cover of G.G Allin’s “Don’t Talk To Me,” which coincidentally was performed back in November at the Middle East except with No Age and Silk Flowers. The mere presence of the Black Lips with No Age is enough for me to safely say that this cover is way better! Oh yeah and Ian, you gotta calm down. You can’t be jumping on my boy Randy with his broken shoulder and all.

GG Allin Mission Statement

If you believe in the real underground of Rock ‘N’ Roll, then now is the time to do something about it. The time is now to overthrow the current situations and declare war on the record companies, radio stations, publications, clubs, and anyone who promotes the whole so called “scene” as it now stands. We need to destroy it all and take it back from the corporate phonies and conformist. But action must be taken now and blood must be spilled.

First let me tell you who I am. I was born Jesus Christ Allin in 1956 in Lancaster, NH. The Jesus Christ they preach about in the Bible is a phony imposter – just a crutch for the cripples to lean on. Fuck that weak shit! I am the man to deal with. I created myself inside the womb from the fires of Hell. There are no separations between Jesus Christ, God and the Devil, because I am all of theme. I am here to take Rock ‘N’ Roll back & prove to the world that I am the real king through the powers I have acquired.

When I was born in 1956, Rock ‘N’ Roll first started taking off. Why do you think that was? Because I created it. I created Elvis. I made it all happen. Even before I was born I was plotting. But through the years everyone has let it all go. That’s why I am ready to take it all back. Nobody has held on. Nobody has had the indurence to finish what they were set out to fucking do. They all let me down or I took their lives for a purpose. I was the one who was throwing all the monkey wrenches into the gears. But money and commercialism made them all sell out. Even Iggy let me down. The Sex Pistols let me down. Sid let me down when he fell in love (that’s why they are all dead). And now we have the Ramones praising bands like Guns N’ Roses, which runs against everything they were set out to destroy.

But now it’s 1991. This is the decade for the final bloody mutilation. Time to get Rock ‘N’ Roll out of the hands of the masses and back to the people who will not accept comfort or conformity at any cost. Then I will commit suicide on stage and the blood of Rock ‘N’ Roll will become the poison of the Universe forever. Take a look around and see what’s happening. Spineless record companies kissing the mainstreams ass, being pressured by the money media and politicians. So called cutting edge radio stations as fucking lame as the stations they oppose. Censorship publications kisssing the monkey suits asses, who in turn, are kissing someone else’s ass. Even so called “underground” publications have no fucking desire to get blood on their hands. They are too busy crying about how we can make the world a more wonderful place and how politically correct they can be. Talk is fucking cheap.

It’s time to fight. It’s time for revenge. We need to overthrow Rock ‘N’ Roll as it now stands. We must bring down record companies by not buying their products. A boycot. If you have to have a record, steal it. That way they wont get your money. We’ve got to stop feeding them. Your support must now go to me – GG Allin, the commanding leader and terrorist of Rock ‘N’ Roll. Why do you think I am in prison right now? Because they know who I am and they fear my reality. Our society wants to stop my mission. They want to brain wash you and keep you locked into MTV, and their stagnating, safe worlds. It’s a plot to kill Rock ‘N’ Roll. I am the savior. Thats why I am considered a threat to society.

This is what you should do:
Go to your record store and buy all the GG ALLIN recordings you can find. If they dont have any in stock, tell them to order some. If they refuse, then do what you have to do. Call radio stations and demand GG Allin. Spray paint “GG ALLIN” everywhere. Make them aware that the disease and the Scumfuc tradition is still spreading. Write “GG ALLIN” on all your dollar bills. Any bills you have. People do not throw money away, so it would be a free way to get the message out. You must do it every day of your life. We must live for the Rock ‘N’ Roll underground. It CAN be dark and dangerous again. It CAN be threatning to our society as it was meant to be. IT MUST BE UNCOMPROMISING. And with me as your leader, it will happen. I am ready to lead you, my allies, into the real Rock ‘N’ Roll underground. Let’s get started.

I have been listening to The Pink Opaque By Cocteau Twins every morning before work. It’s actually been weeks.

Hated: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies

When I was writing about The Hangover a couple of weeks back, IMDB reminded me that the film’s director, Todd Phillips, was also the man behind Hated, a terrifyingly intriguing portrait of self-proclaimed punk rock messiah and all round bad guy, GG Allin. And I began to wonder, how exactly would this film sit with fans of Phillips’ crude but rather conventional series of male-orientated comedies, from Road Trip (2000) and Old School (2003), to Starsky & Hutch (2004), School for Scoundrels (2006) and this year’s The Hangover. Without embarking on some large scale social experiment, I guess I’ll never know. 

But I wont dwell on that question anyway, because lets face it, very few people will claim to ‘enjoy’ this documentary and fewer still would be able to resist the off button when the shit hits the fan(s). There are those, of course, who are already fans of GG Allin, avid subscribers to his naïve nihilism and narcissistic brand of megalomania. Others still, like myself, are intrigued by a figure of frankly mythical proportions who stood out as a fatalistic beacon in the constant mire of transparent punk rock posturing.

In Hated, at least two of the talking heads (including a former bandmate) refer to GG Allin’s onstage antics as a freakshow, a circus act, and it is from this perspective that he gained most of his notoriety; slashing, bashing and defecating his way into the annals of punk rock folklore. But what Phillips tries to present here, I think, is less ‘GG Allin as freakshow’ and more ‘GG Allin as damaged man’. On the one hand, Phillips allows Allin time to discuss his personal philosophies, on the other he provides graphic visual documentation of Allin’s scatological obsessions and almost unwavering commitment to violence, which, if not directed towards himself is doled out to anyone within arms reach, be they male or female.

In many ways, Allin was both an anarchist and a nihilist in the proper sense of the words. Undoubtedly unhinged, he was of society but against it, for control but against order. From another perspective, he was simply an extreme individualist, a libertine who actively sought to alienate himself via unbiased physical, mental and moral violence. When Allin himself states that if he didn’t act that way on stage -if he wasn’t ‘doing what he does’ – he’d likely be a mass murderer, you’d better believe he truly means it.

Strange as it may seem, however, there were elements of Hated that actually made me feel sorry for Allin. In many ways, he was surrounded by a group of people, led by his brother Merle, who were simply riding on his coattails, unwilling to condemn him nor provide unequivocal support for his actions. Despite being vaguely disapproving, they seemed happy to go along for the ride, hesitant to recognise their implicit involvement in Allin’s destructive outbursts. Some of the most sane reactions, however, come from Donald ‘Dino Sex’ Sachs, the slightly unhinged nude drummer for The Murder Junkies, who sees GG Allin’s actions as a symptom of late 2oth century American society.

Indeed, Allin seems to have been as much a product of American society as Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Charles Manson and John Wayne Gacy. He lived his life according to his own rules, but remained lost in a maze of nihilistic masochism and narcissistic rage. He spent a lifetime railing against convention and yet, in death (as Phillips so poignantly states in the film’s postscript), he left this mortal coil not via the onstage suicide he so often promised, but in the most conventional way possible for a man of his ilk. Allin the rockstar died a typical rockstar death: overdosing on a cocktail of drugs and drink during a party in a New York apartment.

As part of his brother’s request, the mortician was instructed not to wash the corpse (which smelled strongly of feces), or apply any makeup. The funeral became a wild party. Friends posed with the corpse, placing drugs and whiskey into its mouth. As the funeral ended, his brother put a pair of headphones on Allin. Años después, el punk se convertiría en un género clásico del mainstream, con una ideología basada cada vez menos en el sueño anárquico, el cual sería sustituido por una simple moda de peinados elevados, botas militares, pantalones ajustados y letras accesibles para el consumo popular. When I was in high school, I went through a really intense GG Allin phase. I exchanged letters with GG’s brother Merle, who was happy to answer all of my bizarre questions. I never completely outgrew that phase, which is why I’m happy that Merle now carries on GG’s legacy with the Murder Junkies.

This flyer is way too conservative for a Murder Junkies/Faggot show.

Will there be shit throwing? Will there be blood? Will they have GG Allin’s severed head jammed onto a microphone stand at the front of the stage? Probably no for the last one, but all the rest is totally up in the air. It’s at Big V’s (the V stands for violence), so chances of at least a fight breaking out are pretty high.

Also, GG Allin is now a bobblehead.

Murder Junkies will play Big V’s in St. Paul, MN, on 05/24/09. My review of the show will be posted the following day.
