I especially liked Tuesday’s chance to get into the music and the beginnings of our understanding of phenomenology, so I wanted to elaborate on some of the thoughts and questions I didn’t get a chance to say in class. They’re also here with videos for you to enjoy and start a discussion on.

So as I left the class and am re-engaging with what little of phenomenology I know, I began to wonder how much subjectivity one can dive into. Can this subjectivity be allow to tangentialize into divergent points and fetishes for critiquing abilities, or is this going too far? How much is this topic “personalizable”? As far as I know, I was left with the phrase “situated in subjectivity”, so I was wondering if there would be a clarification on that, as my mind is already out “over there” in Russia (metaphorically speaking) about what kinds of things we can be subjective about, and when a phenomenological critique can start to become a rant about someone’s personal opinion gradiosized for all to see.

But as I started to take a look at the music again (I posted videos of everything I’m referring to below this), I couldn’t get over the phrase of “metal” to describe what I was hearing and the intent of the artists. For those who don’t know, I am not talking about the material something is made out of, or the type of music. I am talking about the intense, almost purely masculine feeling, of being able to take one’s inner rocker out and using that to describe a situation. For example, a sentence like, “Dude, Arch Enemy’s set last night was so metal!” reads as a compliment of the intense experience of the show (Arch Enemy is a Norwegian Death Metal band that features a female lead who can viscerally scream better than most guys). The reason for this aside? I felt the intent of Rasputina’s song was to showcase how metal a cello can be, and how metal the experience of pairing up electronics, cellos, and hard rock can be. It was pretty epic.

But then I took this metal feeling and then trying to take this intent to other versions of the song, and trying to see if I could use my own subjectivity to get at the possible intent of other rockers trying to play the same song. I first thought of the Guitar Hero 3 version of the song. It is meant to be played as a warm up song for a long session of Guitar Hero. It is quite robotic to play it, as one doesn’t get to “feel” the music, but one has to play the track the exact same way the exact same time, which I feel takes away from what the song should be. It also is the same recording every time, so the only different experience there is depends on how many times a player misses the notes. The only way to get metal out of this is, of course, depending on the player, but for some, the only way to get metal is to get 100% (see video below). There just isn’t the same feeling any more with this song and Guitar Hero. Also, there is little possibility of interacting with 2 or more people on this song to bring out the metalness of it. So, I think if Rasputina got ahold of this, they wouldn’t have the same type of experience, and frankly, probably wouldn’t even like it.

So then this interaction made me want to go look back at the original version of the song as well. As I found the live version shown below, I started to listen and re-engage with another intent: the original band giving us a personal take upon one of their classics. They are free to make it as different in the lyrics (to a point) and the overall action, as they are supposed to make it a personalized experience of listening to the song while seeing the band play the song. This is not the type of normal interaction while listening to the music. Heart brings its own metalness to the table, but it is distinctly their own metalness – the metalness of improvisation.

I also wanted to mention why my subjectivity led me to mention a slightly unheard of game: Shadow Hearts. It is historical fiction situated in the Rasputin-era of Russia, but the music reminded me of some of the battles and the totality of the end experience of playing this game (but not the monotonous grinding). Please take it for what its worth.

It’s been a while since I posted about Guitar Hero. In fact, it’s been a while since I posted at all. Therefore, I feel it is appropriate to take a moment to brag about how my skills have improved. The last time I posted about Guitar Hero, I was talking about how I got 5 stars on “Number of the Beast” on Expert. This was, in fact, a big deal to me at the time, as it was extremely hard for me to do. Since then, I have gotten over 500,000 points on that very same song. I have also achieved 5 stars on all Guitar Hero 3 Career Mode songs, and also gotten the achievement for scoring 200k on “Cult of Personality” without using Star Power.

I have purchased and played through Guitar Hero: World Tour. I enjoyed the enhanced gameplay, especially the feature that allows notes to be played while a sustain is continuously held. The slider notes are great as well, as I’m a fan of the Hammer-ons and Pull-offs, and slider notes take that one step further, getting rid of strumming altogether World Tour fails, however, to amp up the difficulty until the last couple sets of songs. The only one I have yet to beat is “Satch Boogie,” thanks to its section of extremely fast slider notes. I have also yet to achieve 5 stars on “Trapped in Ice” by Metallica. The other songs, however, I found easy to master. I do appreciate the track list, especially “Hotel California,” a song I had not heard before playing it, but now greatly enjoy.

I bought Guitar Hero: Smash Hits last Wednesday and beat it on Thursday. I beat “Through the Fire and the Flames” for the first time on Thursday, and achieved 4 stars on Friday. Today, I achieved 5 stars on “Psychobilly Freakout,” and 5 stars on “Play With Me.” Now, I am only two stars short of a 5star full game, having 238/240 stars. The ones I’m missing are one from “Raining Blood” and of course, one from “Through the Fire and the Flames.” These are all on the Expert difficulty.

I loved Smash Hits, because it has many songs from the original Guitar Hero, which is not available for the Xbox 360, and I’ve never played it. The re-frets of the GH2 songs are excellent as well. Guitar Hero: Smash hits adds the function of seeing your progress on how many stars you’ve while you’re still playing the song, much like Rock Band does.

I’m one of those talented people who took the 17 minutes to go to youtube and type “how to solve rubiks cube” into the search bar, and that gives me a certain sense of superiority. Gave, rather.

I got a copy of Guitar Hero III and Super Mario Sluggers last night. I already had an old GH3 save file from borrowing a long time ago, so I already had a few tracks done. Through the Fire and Flames was already unlocked by someone else, so it was available to me.

That’s right! I JUST got 5 stars on Number of the Beast on EXPERT! I got 395,191 points and 95% of the notes! Today I had been busting some of my high scores on songs like “Cult of Personality,” “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” and “The Metal.” While I was on a “roll” I figured I should try NOTB. On my first try, I busted my old high score by about 20,000 points (I got 359,939 points) but still only had 4 stars. I tried it again and was doing GREAT but my dad interrupted me towards the end and I screwed up. I guess third time’s the charm because I nailed it on that third try. I freaked out and forced my brother to come and witness the score so my friends couldn’t tell me I cheated or let someone else beat it Now I only have one more song to go (Raining Blood) until I have gotten 5 stars on every Expert career song.

I’m amazed at how far I’ve made it when it comes to my skills as a Guitar Hero player. Just over a year ago I was struggling to beat ‘Beast and the Harlot’ on Expert, and now I’ve almost beat TTFATF. I have 5 stars on every song in Career Mode on Expert, save but two songs: Raining Blood (4 stars), and Number of the Beast (4 stars). I just can’ t seem to get the last few points necessary for 5 stars on those songs! I also have trouble with some of the bonus songs, TTFATF not included either! For instance, “The Way It Ends” is REALLY hard… I haven’t beaten that on either… All in all, though, I’m pretty impressed with my own skill, and am suprised that I got so good with so little effort. Most people I play with think that I practice for hours every day, but I really only play 4-5 songs just for the fun of it most of the time! On Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, I have 5 stars on every expert song, and I’m not sure about GH2, cos my little brothers broke the disc… again. I’m getting ANOTHER copy tomorrow after I get my paycheck lol…

I haven’t gotten to play World Tour much, but I like what I see. My friend got GH:WT for Christmas, but only has the Guitar, so I stopped by his house to play it for about an hour. They’ve got a [i]big[/i] selection of songs to play and all of them are great. The slide bar is hard to master and I haven’t gotten the hang of it. I like the new feature where sometimes there is a sustained note with other notes you have to play while keeping the first sustained, as well as the fact that GH followed Rock Band with the ability to gain Star Power while you already have Star Power activated. Expert has moved up a notch on many songs, thanks to the addition of the slidebar, and I think it will be quite a while before a large majority of players have very many 5 star performances on the harder songs! I can’t wait to play it more and would love to try out the drum set.
