Social media is a great medium to market products, but twitter ads?  It’s a trend I’ve seen popping up lately, and I’m not the only one noticing. The NY Times wrote about it this weekend in their article A Friend’s Tweet Could Be an Ad. The basic concept is that companies target “influencers” (people with a ton of followers – think celebrities like Ashton Kutcher, John Mayer, and Ellen) to tweet about their product. Another company called Tweet for Cash is a program you can purchase that teaches you how to make money by twittering. A friend forwarded me this article (which is really an ad for Tweet for Cash disguised as an article… tricky tricky) about how an unemployed fast food worker now makes over $10,000 a month just by posting links on twitter.

The controversy arises because this concept dilutes the “authenticity” of Twitter. No one wants to be bombarded with ads in her social media conversation, and followers can probably easily see through the paid-for ad-tweets. I suppose it’s smart for companies to target key influencers on Twitter to help get their message out, but I also have to wonder if this is the smartest tactic. I’m not saying they shouldn’t do it, or that it’s an ineffective strategy for marketing. It’s just not believable. It’s just that if tweets aren’t coming from an authentic place, they feel low-grade and the whole process feels kind of unscrupulous. Then again, no one ever said Twitter was a place to engage in genuine, quality, thought provoking conversation – the whole premise is built on an in-one-ear-and-out-the-other mentality.

So, go ahead, Tweet for Cash! Why not! Mix those paid-for tweets in with your quotations from Nitche and Ghandi, and your profound reflections on life! I’ll forget about it just as fast as you can tweet it.

Even though Americans treat people according to their race,sexuality, socio-economic status, and gender we are all still humans. One of the 4 men depicted, Martin Luther King, had an ideal for equality within America. In his speech, “I Have A Dream”, states “I have a dream that one day my 4 children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the context of their character.” King wanted everyone, specifically whites, need to accept people, specifically blacks, for their character and not what they see on the outside. 1968 King was assassinated for his fight for equality.

In 2008 ben ik ben een groepje vrienden naar India gegaan. Ik wilde graag kennismaken met het land van de voorouders van mijn man. Uiteraard mag een bezoek aan het huis van Gandhi niet ontbreken. Als je zelf een keer gaat even een waarschuwing vooraf. Laat je niet ontmoedigen door het feit dat er in het huis allerlei Gandhi souvenirs worden verkocht. Het wordt gedaan door vrijwilligers en gebruikt om onderandere het huis in tiptop conditie te houden.
Tussen alle souvenirs, lendendoeken en andere spullen heb ik een boek gevonden over het leven van de man zelf, zijn denkbeelden en uitspraken. Gandhi beschouw ik als een van de grote zielen der aarde. Een bescheiden man die met zijn denkbeelden en acties een grote impact heeft op heel veel mensen. ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world’, is een van zijn uitspraken. Anders vertaald: Voeg daad bij je woord.

Van droom naar doen.

Mijn droom is dat mensen meer in harmonie met elkaar leven. Om die droom te verwezenlijken ben ik eerst zelf maar eens begonnen en heb daad bij woord gevoegd door elke dag gewoon eens iets aardigs te doen voor een ander. Deel je mijn droom, doe dan mee. Hier volgt een lijstje ‘aardige acties’ dat ik steeds zal aanvullen. Uiteraard zijn dit wel acties die ik eerst zelf gedaan heb:-D

1. Laat je ongestempelde treinkaartje voor een ander achter bij de automaat.
2. Zet de kliko van de buren aan de straat.
3. Geef iemand vandaag een complimentje.
4. Help iemand bij het oplossen van een probleem.
5. Luister naar iemands verhaal zonder haar te onderbreken.
6. Denk je dat iemand ergens heel goed in is, zeg dat dan tegen die persoon.
7. Groet iemand met wie je in de lift staat.
8. Zet in je email-handtekening onderaan ‘fijne dag vandaag’.
9. Haal koffie voor je collegae.
10. Bewaar Viva’s, Libelle’s en ander leesvoer dat je krijgt en geef door aan een andere liefhebber.
11. Bezoek iemand in het ziekenhuis.
12. Help iemand met re-integratie en biedt arbeidstherapeutisch werk aan.
13. Sta op voor een mama met een klein kindje in de bus.
14. Houdt de lift houden voor iemand.

La Marcia Mondiale per la Pace e la Nonviolenza è finalmente partita il 2 ottobre 2009, una data importante, la nascita di Ghandi, proclamata dall’ONU “Giornata internazionale della Nonviolenza”. Per la prima volta nella storia si è messa in moto una manifestazione da proporzioni notevoli grazie all’impegno di tante belle persone. Un’iniziativa nata dall’atto semplice di chi per coscienza aderisce a una causa degna e la condivide con altri: chiedere con forza la fine di tutte le guerre e di tutte le forme di violenza a favore di un mondo di pace e nonviolento.
La Marcia Mondiale passerà da Firenze l’11 novembre. Una Marcia simbolica che coinvolgerà migliaia di persone delle città, istituzioni, scuole ed associazioni della Regione Toscana.
Anche Campi Bisenzio vi aderisce in sostegno al diritto all’autodeterminazione del popolo Saharawi.

Tras un tiempo callado por falta de medios que no por miedo, aunque alguien así lo interprete, quiero romper mi silencio. Hay muchas cosas que no me gustan en el mundo y aunque no siempre es fácil asumir un origen común a todas ellas y mucho menos dilucidar las, a menudo, múltiples causas de un mismo proceso; esta vez creo que puedo decir, sin miedo a equivocarme, que si el mundo está mal es culpa nuestra.

Viendo el ejemplo de otros tiempos, aprendemos que lo que diferencia una revuelta de una revolución son los fines que la motivan. A lo largo de la historia cuando el vulgo, los no-poderosos, encontraban insoportable su situación, se levantaban contra los poderosos manifestando su descontento. Si ello no tenía un sentido claro, se convertía en una revuelta que, convenientemente reprimida, retomaba el statu quo anterior. Ahora bien, si existía cierta organización en la muchedumbre soliviantada, unos objetivos concretos, un método para alcanzarlos y cierta legitimidad en el nuevo sistema; entonces, en ese momento, la plebe descontenta se convierte en marea revolucionaria, se establecen nuevas concepciones del poder, nuevas formas de entender e interpretar la realidad política, económica y social; un nuevo mundo en definitiva, ni mejor ni peor, pero siempre distinto, siempre dinámico, siempre dotado de esa capacidad de reinventarse a sí mismo.

Ese viejo espíritu revolucionario, esa necesidad imperiosa de ir más allá; de cambiar el mundo, de mejorarlo, de buscar un nuevo porvenir para nosotros y para los que nos heredarán, es, a mi entender, lo que elevaba los ojos de Galileo al cielo nocturno; lo que llevó a Leonardo a intentar comprender la realidad inventando. La poderosa llamada de la innovación que excitaba la imaginación de los estudiantes franceses en el 68, también obligó a ese eterno guerrillero a retomar su fusil en Bolivia, a miles de mujeres en todo el mundo a demostrar que llevaban aquí tanto tiempo como nosotros. Fueron todos ellos y  otros muchos los llamados a cambiar el mundo.

Gandhi, Mandela, Luther King tienen en común con otros muchos nombres y anónimos de la Historia el volcar todos sus esfuerzos, la vida en ocasiones, en revolucionar a la humanidad y llenarla de esperanza, de confianza en el cambio, de nuevas ideas y del anhelo de un futuro mejor. La efervescencia de aquellas mentes fue responsable de un dinamismo capaz de convertirnos en lo que hoy somos.

Ya no hay nadie capaz de ponerse ante una hilera de tanques y darles el alto.

Hoy miro a mi alrededor y no encuentro sino ecos de estas voces revolucionarias que en otro tiempo agitaban las conciencias de la humanidad, hoy miro a mi alrededor y veo como una sociedad dotada de más medios que ninguna otra antes para organizarse en su búsqueda de la justicia, para sentir y desear un nuevo mundo, para hacer oír su voz a través del tiempo, reniega de su responsabilidad en lo que seremos el día de mañana. Más bien acalla su conciencia con excusas, culpa al sistema olvidando que ella mísma es el sistema.

Estoy harto de oír hablar de reciclar, reducir y reutilizar; estoy harto de ver como el ánimo de luchar contra lo que no debe ser desaparece autoengañándonos con tres bolsas de colores. Aquel que quiera salvar el mundo que se preocupe, en la calle, entre la gente, de que Kioto sea una obligación y no una declaración de intenciones, que se levante contra el control oligárquico que se ejerce sobre los gobiernos; que haga en definitiva que los gobernantes le teman a él. Y también a ella, porque no está sola; cuenta con el ánimo y el ímpetu de toda una marabunta de voces que rugen su derecho y su obligación de decidir sobre si mismos.

Aquel que quiera cambiar el mundo que no se vanaglorie de su libertad de votar y escoger, que no elegir, a sus líderes; sino que haga que éstos tengan siempre presente que su obligación es el servicio al bien común, que no olviden ni por un instante que los errores se pagan.

Hi everybody! Now that the World Series matchup has been set, it’s time for everyone to start making predictions and talking some smack, I figured I would throw my name into the hat. Yes, I know this is supposed to be a music blog. But since it’s my blog, I figured I’d have a little fun with this — especially since the Phillies are back in the Fall Classic.

I guarantee you’re not going to get a more thoughtful and in-depth analysis of this year’s Major League Baseball championship series than you’re going to get right here. The fun begins after the jump…

Hi, I’m YankeeFan729 and I’m here to provide my position-by-position analysis for the two teams in the World Series this year. Let’s get started…

PITCHING

ROTATION: We spent enough money on C.C. Sabathia and A.J. Burnett to buy a Third World country. You can look it up. I hear the president of Djibouti has a pretty sweet curveball, and we might scout him in the offseason, but for now I’ll stick with C.C. and A.J. and the other guys. The only good pitcher the Phillies have is Lee. The Yanks are still Pedro’s daddy, Cole Hamels is too busy thinking about his hot wife to pitch, and Joe Blanton is fat. Advantage: YANKEES.

Soon to be renamed YANKEELAND.

BULLPEN: Mariano Rivera, yo. I really don’t think I have to explain it any further. So what if the Phillies keep coming back in the ninth inning? We have MARIANO RIVERA. So what if the Phillies have enough power to build a huge lead before he can even get his jacket off? MARIANO FRICKING RIVERA. Advantage: YANKEES.

INFIELD

CATCHER: The Phillies have some guy named Carlos Roo-iz who’s trying to steal Reggie Jackson’s nickname and have it translated into Spanish. Hey, Roo-iz – welcome to America! We speak English, and Reggie Jackson is already Señor Octubre — er, Mr. October. Advantage: YANKEES.

FIRST BASE: Philly fans can say whatever they want about Ryan Howard, and they can rip us all they want for giving Mark Teixeira $10 million for every vowel in his name, but which one gets paid to recite lame poetry in Subway ads? Not Tex. Advantage: YANKEES.

SECOND BASE: Chase Utley once cussed us Yankee fans out for giving him the ol’ Bronx cheer at the All-Star Game last year. I’m still angry about this. Therefore, even though he’s the better player, Advantage: YANKEES.

SHORTSTOP: Derek Jeter is the greatest thing to happen to baseball since Abner Doubleday. He is a true Yankee and I routinely sacrifice stray cats (we have a lot of ‘em in my neighborhood) to the baseball gods every week as my thanks for allowing him to grace us with his presence. I don’t think the national media gives him enough credit for everything he’s done. I mean, come on… Jimmy Rollins hit, like, .190 for the NLCS and he’s the big hero in all the SportsCenter ads? What the world needs now is love, sweet love… for Derek Jeter. Advantage: DEREK JETER.

THIRD BASE: A-Rod is a tool and totally not a true Yankee like Derek Jeter but he finally decided to stop choking in the playoffs. The guy who plays third for the Phillies is called Happy Peter, which is pretty much the wimpiest nickname ever. I think the steroids were what held A-Rod back all these years. Advantage: YANKEES.

OUTFIELD

LEFT FIELD: Raul Ibanez looks like Mahatma Ghandi as played by Ben Kingsley (only with no moustache), and everyone knows that Ghandi sucked at baseball. Our left fielder is Johnny Damon, who used to look like the bastard love child of Billy Mays and Jesus. Advantage: YANKEES.

CENTER FIELD: Shane Victorino is from Hawaii. Quick – name a good baseball player who has ever come from Hawaii. You can’t. That’s because they don’t have any that I’ve heard of. They’re too busy surfing and watching volcanoes erupt and crap. Advantage: YANKEES.

RIGHT FIELD: Jayson Werth has this really annoying little patch of facial hair on his chin that makes me want to punch him. I’m a Yankee fan, okay? Our players are too professional to grow facial hair. George Steinbrenner has personally seen to that – I hear he keeps a pair of hedge clippers in the locker room just in case Damon starts growing his hair again. Advantage: YANKEES.

Wow, that was incredibly easy. Maybe I should write for ESPN. They could use more fair-minded Yankee coverage on that channel, especially with that Boston douche Peter Gammons talking all about how much he loves the Phillies. And don’t even get me started on Bill Simmons.

10. J. Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967)

Physics

One of the trademarks of the 20th century, horrible though it may be, is the creation of the atomic bomb.  This is the ultimate weapon of destruction which set our world into a state of fear for the latter half of the century with the cold war, as well as put an abrupt end to the Second World War.  Oppenheimer was a brilliant physicist, unfortunately his legacy will always be the bomb.   Oppenheimer is sort of like the real life Frankenstein; horrified at what he had created, but unable to unmake it.

9. Sigmund Freud (1856-1939)

Psychology

When Freud came along, he changed the way we thought about the way we think.  He essentially created the field of psychoanalysis, working on interpreting our dreams and our subconscious.  He also made a huge advancement in the liberation of sexual dialogue in society today.

8. Bill Gates (1955- )

Computers

When Gutenburg created the printing press, be revolutionized the world by allowing ideas to spread through the written page.  Bill Gates could perhaps be called the Gutenburg of the information age.  Though he didn’t invent the computer, be did make it accessable to almost everyone in the developed world, once again revolutionizing how we spread information around the globe.

7. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968)

Civil Rights

He had a dream, and people responded.  He was one of the most passionate speakers we had seen since the war, and he fought for a noble and just cause.  He tried to repair race relations by bringing people together rather than keeping them apart.  He brought down the Jim Crow laws in the states.  Though his work is not yet finished, but set the people of his country on a mission of equity and justice.

6. Vladimir Lenin (1870-1924)

Politics

Communism was simply a theory on the pages of Marx and Engels’ Communist Manifesto until Lenin came along with a vision to use Russia to put it into practice.  His Russian Revolution in 1917 shook the world.  Communism spread quickly through Eastern Europe and Asia, though the heart of it was in Russia.   Lenin made a superpower out of the USSR and made an indelible mark upon the world.

5.  James Watson and Francis Crick (1928- , 1916 – 2004)

Biochemistry

The number five position actually goes to two people, the scientific pair of Watson and Crick.  These two biologists discovered and developed the molecular structure of DNA, the genetic material which are the blueprints to our bodies and lives.  Today, the impact of their model is everywhere, from cloning, to the Human Genome Project, to genetic engineering.  Biotechnology is the wave of the future, and it all began with Watson and Cricks’ double helix.

4. Mahatma Ghandi (1869-1948)

Politics

Ghandi was the leader of India during their revolt against the British Empire which made them an independent nation.  Yet Ghandi’s influence  far beyond this.  Even today, Ghandi is a symbol of the power of peace.  His non-violent movements were an inspiration to the world.  It is this radical thinking that peace can make a difference that sets him apart form most other leaders of the age.

3. Henry Ford (1863-1947)

Industry

Henry Ford changed the way the world travelled with his Model T, popularizing the motor vehicle.  But not only that, Ford’s major influence comes from his use of the assembly line and promotion of mass production.  This is largely responsible for the industrial revolution’s massive spike at the beginning of this century and a big reason why technology and industry are at the point where they are at today.

2. Adolf Hitler (1889-1945)

Politics

Unfortunately, the most influential people in our history are not always influential in a positive way.   Sometimes there are those whose influence upon the world is one of horror and evil.  Adolf Hitler has become synonymous with the word evil.  His great ambitions ensnared Germany and began the Second World War, one of the largest events in world history.  His terrible policies of discrimination and hate led to the holocaust, one of the greatest atrocities of our time.  Hitler didn’t just leave a mark on the world, he left a scar.

1. Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

Physics

Over the last couple of centuries, scientific advancement has been making some major advancements, but when Einstein came along, he really took things to a new level.  Einstein’s theories revolutionized the way physicists think about nothing less than the universe itself.  Time and space were suddenly connected and no longer constant.  The theory of relativity would change Einstein’s field.  Einstein’s influence on modern science is one that is so strong, it will cover all scientific areas for many years to come.

The Crazy Ones…

Are you a crazy one?

It reminds me of this wonderful passage:

And that’s the thing, isn’t it?  To each of us discover what makes us crazy…what lights the fire of our passions…what would call us to be anything but normal.  Do you know what that is?  Are you pursuing it courageously or are you waiting for “someday”?

The crazy ones don’t wait.  They sally forth.  They fail.  Their hearts are broken.  They heal up and leap right back into the fray.

That’s why we call them crazy.

That’s why crazy is such a precious commodity.

Dr. Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and founder of the
M.K. Gandhi Institute for Non-violence, in his June 9 lecture at
the University of Puerto Rico , shared the following story as an
example of “non-violence in parenting”:
 
**”I was 16 years old and living with my parents at the institute my
 grandfather had founded 18 miles outside of Durban , South Africa ,
in the middle of the sugar plantations. We were deep in the country
and had no neighbors, so my two sisters and I would always look
forward to going to town to visit friends or go to the movies.**

**One day, my father asked me to drive him to town for an all-day
conference, and I jumped at the chance. Since I was going to town,
my mother gave me a list of groceries she needed and, since I had
all day in town, my father ask me to take care of several pending
 chores, such as getting the car serviced. When I dropped my father
off that morning, he said, ‘ I will meet you here at 5:00 p.m., and
we will go home together. ‘ **
 
**After hurriedly completing my chores, I went straight to the
nearest movie theatre. I got so engrossed in a John Wayne
double-feature that I forgot the time. It was 5:30 before I
remembered. By the time I ran to the garage and got the car and
hurried to where my father was waiting for me, it was almost 6:00. **

**He anxiously asked me, ‘ Why were you late? ‘ I was so ashamed of
telling him I was watching a John Wayne western movie that I said, ‘
The car wasn ‘ t ready, so I had to wait, ‘ not realizing that he
had already called the garage. When he caught me in the lie, he

the way we punish our children, whether I would have learned a

Oh, hello.

A quote, my dear readers, before we begin.

“Humanity fears that which it does not know, and therefore shuns the darkness for concealing the things they do not have the patience to understand.”

Unfortunate as it is, it is true. We humans fear the things we do not understand, the things we cannot change. Sometimes this fear turns into anger and frustration as we try to understand, only to fail.

The thing that has triggered this (admittedly odd-sounding) blog entry has been the recent misfortune of a good friend.

I can only assume that you all remember Jakob, my ex with whom I am still on good terms with?

Recently an ex-girlfriend of his (not myself, but an earlier individual) hacked into his Myspace, and changed the information therein to false vulgarities that make him out to be a horrible, voyeuristic teen miscreant. Anyone who knows Jakob would know that he is a sweet, caring, and very likeable young man. If anyone is undeserving of this kind of cyberbullying, it is him.

What is worse is that she has also changed his password and has logged on as him several times since, posting obviously false status updates. The only reason I can fathom for her doing this is this: he has entered in a tentative relationship with a young woman who makes him happy. Instead of being happy for him, as I am, she instead gets jealous and vindictive because he was never this happy with her.

This brings up the topic of this blog entry: is it right to ruin something good for another out of jealousy and fear?

Personally, I strongly dislike it when someone purposely sabotages someone’s life. I myself would never do that, and I expect others to do the same. Yet it happens.

I know that it happens, and I also realize I am not God. I cannot prevent it from happening. However, what you should never do is hack their profile. Do not stoop to their level. The best way to go about it is to use either of these steps:

A: You can click the “forgot password” button and fill in your email.

B: Think like the hacker and type something they would type as the password.

If those fail, then I suggest you confront the hacker. Calmly explain that what they did was wrong, and that they can do the right thing and give you the password so you can undo the damage. If that doesn’t work, then the best thing to do would be to create a new account, and tell everyone on your old friends list to add the new account and block the old. It’s a pain and may seem like a waste of time, but you regain control of your life.

I personally have never had any of my profiles hacked, thank the powers that be, but I believe these to be the easiest ways to go about the situation maturely and without much bloodshed. If there is a better way that you can think of, then I do not mind you telling me so in a comment to this post. After all, I am only trying to help others in order to better myself as a person. I am trying to do what Mahatma Ghandi, the great teacher of peace and justice, once said:

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

I offer my humble beliefs and advice to you, the readers, as a way to achieve that. By telling you how I would react in a given situation, I try to lead by example and change the world. My voice is a whisper in the great universe, but goodness if it isn’t annoying enough to get heard.
