Love that she's walking in high heels across the rocky terrain

Khaled Hosseini’s second novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, is a story of two women and their lives in Afghanistan over the past 30 years spanning such tumultous events as the Soviet takeover of Afghanistan, the years of Mujahideen resistance, and the rise and fall of the Taliban.

Mariam is an illegitimate child who is forced to marry Rasheed, an abusive husband at age 15. Rasheed is an ugly, cruel man who breaks Mariam’s spirit time and again. Laila is an attractive girl who lives just up the street. She is born to educated, liberal parents and enjoys the freedoms Mariam is restricted from. She has a boyfriend, but their plans to marry get derailed when he has to leave the country and move to Pakistan as a refugee. Although he offers to marry Laila and take her with him, she opts to stay back with her parents who need her.

During the wars of the 1980’s and 1990’s, a rocket destroys Laila’s home and family. Finding herself alone and pregnant with her boyfriend’s child, she decides to accept Rasheed’s offer of marriage and becomes his second wife. The story then deals with how Mariam and Laila form an almost impossible friendship, and how they support each other through all their travails.

My Review:

A Thousand Splendid Suns does a wonderful job of giving glimpses and insight into the daily life in Afghanistan through the eyes of two very different women who become friends and allies.

I was very apprehensive to pick up this book. I hadn’t much liked “The Kite Runner”, and all that I read about this book made me feel it would be a tear-jerker, overly emotional kind of novel. The sort I normally try to avoid.

Anyway, I did eventually read it, and I must admit that I loved this one so much better than The Kite Runner. I really loved the 2 main characters. They are not spineless at all, but each show maturity and strength in the midst of unimaginable hardships. The ending of the book is superb, redemptive, and hopeful.

Khaled Hosseini paints a stark picture of what it means to be a woman in a culture where they are valued only for how well they keep a house, and how many sons they produce. A culture where they are subject to the whims of men. Those that value them as worthwhile human beings are welcome oases – they seem to be the exceptions in their world, rather than the norm.

To my surprise, there were also some subtle humorous passages in the book.

There is a hilarious aside in the book about a painter who is forced to draw pants on his paintings of flamingos to hide their “nudity”. I also loved reading about how people worked around the Taliban ban on TVs by burying it in the garden during raids.

What horrified me in the novel was the actuality of how rubbish daily life really was under the Taliban regime – no TV, no cinema, no books (apart from Islamic religious texts), no kite flying, full burqas, no cosmetic use, women could not travel without a man to escort them. What on earth did people do for recreation? I mean all the simple pleasures of life were taken away.

I am not even looking at this from a gender perspective. Life would have been hellish for men too, I am sure.

There are some nice bits of Islamic poetry and songs scattered through the novel, which I loved.

I will be posting a longer poem in a separate post, but I thought I would end this review with an excerpt from this shorter, very lovely ghazal that was included in this book, and which epitomizes its very spirit. This ghazal is by someone called Hafez:

Joseph shall return to Canaan, grieve not,
Hovels shall turn to rose garden, grieve not,
If a flood should arrive to drown all that’s alive,
Noah is your guide in the typhoon’s eye, grieve not.

In short, this book is every bit as splendid as the title suggests. Go read!

Manifest Destiny

I’m not the dirt crusted beneath your nails
I’m the internal, eternal process of being you.

You were buried beneath western plateaus
and I was drowning in eastern seas.

If the desert once French kissed the oceans
do you think they miss the waters—

miss it like you say you miss me?
I’m following the trail you carved

etched out pocket knife love on cacti and oak trees.
All that matters now, is you and me, is we,

the awkward following of pine trails and tumbleweeds
hear you calling me westward in the petal lifted breeze…

I am more restless now that I am aware of you,
travel these old shattered highways to be near you

only in mind, in dreams, in wishes
send you the wind with messages and kisses.

“Blue, come to California, to L.A., westward to me…”
but, I’m chained here still finishing time under Florida palm trees.

Excitement! I got another poem accepted to Qarrtsiluni for their upcoming “Health” issue… still waiting for the one I sent in for this issue to appear, but I’ve been assured it is lined up, as they plan out the order all in advance, it seems. Meanwhile, here’s one that I wrote for the theme but ended up not submitting, as I mistakenly wrote five (when their limit this time was three). Was going for spiritual, harmonic health in this one…

Walking Meditation

Each breath an exercise in self-control,
each step to quiet a chaos in the soul.

The things that give us strength: the sloping stars
to banish imperfection from the soul

the crooked wind, its song an echo in
our hearts, to lift the feathers of the soul

and show it to the sun, its liquid light
in droplets running fire through the soul

electrifying weary thoughts and dreams,
the frigid mind empowered by the soul

that lines the corners of the world, that draws
us ever onward, lifeline to the soul

reminding us we have the self-control
to quiet that threadbare chaos in the soul.

Brad Land compares it to a bottle rocket in his memoir

as it crashes Into the black pavement, his lit cigarette.

Marlboro Reds taste like harsh and stiff as the smoke burns

the cowboy’s eye while the ashes fall from the tip of the cigarette.

Blue lights appear in the rear view mirror, the car pulls

off the road. He writes a ticket for releasing the cigarette.

French tip nails look glossy as they form a V around the filter

directing it to lips that crave the nicotine of a cigarette.

Beth, are you smoking in the girl’s room? I watch as it cyclones

down into the sewer, remorseful of my drowning cigarette.

We are all used to Shammi Kapoor singing jovial songs in Rafi’s voice in the outdoors, with seriousness nowhere in sight. And indeed almost all songs picturised on Shammi Kapoor in his movies are like that.

Here is a song with a difference. This song is indeed a song sung by Rafi and picturised on Shammi Kapoor, but this song is not the usual Rafi-Shammi Kapoor song. It is a serious song. In fact, it is a ghazal ! Yes, it is a ghazal.

Music director is Shankar Jaikishan alright, but the lyricist is not the usual one (Hasrat Jaipuri or Shailendra). In this movie, Shankar Jaikishan had worked with Rajinder Krishan for the first (and as it turned out, last time) time.

And this song, which for some explicable reason , failed to get popular. Listening to this song for the first time, I could not but help feel that this was one of the best ghazals that I had come across. The poetry by Rajinder Krishan is just out of this world. I already had very high opinion about Rajinder Krishan’s penmanship. Any one listening to this song can only become even more impressed with Rajinder Krishan’s abilities as a lyricist.

Rafi has sung this song with feeling. And the tune for this ghazal is as good as any.

Here is a Rafi-Shammi Kapoor song with a difference. And what a gem of a song !

Song-phoolon ki tarah wo hansti thi (College Girl) (1961) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

aaa aaa aaa aaa
phoolon ki tarah wo hansti thi
kaliyon ki tarah muskaati thi
wo tumse bilkul milti hai
khwaabon mein mere jo aati thi
phoolon ki tarah wo hansti thi
kaliyon ki tarah muskaati thi
wo tumse bilkul milti hai
khwaabon mein mere jo aati thi
phoolon ki tarah wo hansti thi

jeewan ki dhadkan bankar wo
chhaa jaati thi in saanson mein
aur main bhi doobaa rahta thaa
uski matwaali aankhon mein
tum jaise sharmaa jaati ho
aisi hi wo sharmaati thi
phoolon ki tarah wo hansti thi

tum mere tasawwur mein aakar
aksar khaamosh si rahti thi
na main tujhse kuchh kahtaa thaa
na tu mujhse kuchh kahti thi
kuchh maine agar kahnaa chaahaa
teri nazar jhuk jaati thi
phoolon ki tarah wo hansti thi

honthon ko izaajat tum de do
izhaar muhabbat ka kar loon
kahdo agar jo aaj mujhe
in baahon mein tumko bhar loon
ye pyaari si soorat hai wohi
din raat nazar jo aati thi
phoolon ki tarah wo hansti thi
kaliyon ki tarah muskaati thi
wo tumse bilkul milti hai
khwaabon mein mere jo aati thi

Lyrics by Nyay Sharma

maine socha tha agar maut se pehle pehle
maine socha tha agar duniya ke veeraanon mein
maine socha tha agar hasti ki shamshanon mein
kisi insaan ko bas ek bhi insaan ki (a)gar
sachhi belaag mohabbat kahin ho jaaye naseeb
wohi sahil jo bohut duur nazar aata hai
khud-ba-khud khinchta chala aata hai kashti ke qareeb
maine socha tha yunhi dil ke kanwal khilte hain
maine socha tha yunhi sabr-o-sukoon milte hain
maine socha tha yunhi zakhm-e-jigar silte hain

Veeraana: Wilderness, Ruined Place
Hastii: Being, Existence, Life
Shamshaan: A place where dead bodies are burned, a burning-ground; burial-ground, cemetery
Laag: Affection, Attachment, Affinity Animosity, Desire, Love, Passion, Relation, Relevancy, Trick
Be-laag: Unbiased
Naseeb: Destiny, Fortune, Fate, Lot, Quota
Saahil: Beach, River-Side, Shore
Khud-ba-Khud: All By Oneself, Automatically
Khinchtaa: Pull, Yank, Draw, Attract, Tow
Kashti: Ark, Boat, Ship, Tray, Vessel
Qareeb: Adjacent, Akin, Approaching, Almost, Approximately, Near
Sabr: Bear, Endurance, Patience, Resignation, Submission, Suffering
Sukoon: Peace, Rest, Tranquility, Quietude, Quiet, Quiescence, Quietness
Zakhm: Hurt, Lacerated, Impaired, Sore, Wounded
Jigar: Courage, Liver, Heart, Soul, Mind, Vitals
Silna: Stich, Mend

lekin…
sochne hi se muraadein toh nahin mil jaati
aisa hota toh har ik dil ki tamanna khilti
koshishen lakh sahi baat nahin banti hai
aisa hota toh har ik raahi ko manzil milti
maine socha tha ke insaan ki qismat aksar
phoot jaati hai bikharti hai sambhal jaati hai
apsara chand ki badli se nikal jaati hai
par mere bakht ki gardish ka toh kuchh anth nahin
khusk dharti bhi toh manjdhaar bani jaati hai
kya muqaddar se shikaayat kya zamane se gila
khud meri saans hi talwaar bani jaati hai

Muraad: Desire, Intention, Meaning, Object, Tendency, Tenor, Will, Wish, Vow
Bikharna: Scatter, Spread, Strew
Sambhal jaana: Hold up, Set right, Settle
Badli: Cloudiness; a small bit of cloud

haye… phir bhi sochta hoon…
raat ki siyaahi mein taaron ke diye jalte hain
khoon jab rota hai dil geet tabhi dhaltein hai
jinko jeena hai who marne se nahin darte hain
is liye…
mera pyaala hai jo khaali toh yeh khaali hi sahi
mujhko honton se lagane do, yunhi peene do
zindagi meri har ik mod pe na-kaam sahi
phir bhi ummeedon ko pal bhar ke liye jeene do

I remember when he used to sing qawwalis along with his uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. I would find his screechy voice in the background quite funny. After Nusrat Fateh Ali’s demise in August 1997, he continued his journey and emerged as a solo singer. In the beginning his voice failed to appeal me. The first time I noticed him was when I listened to Man Ki Lagan in 2003 end. I had bought the otherwise pretty average album of the movie Paap just for that song. The song was soothing and sensual. I think it was penned by Amjad Islam Amjad. So basically Bhatts (Pooja and Mahesh) had introduced him into the mainstream Hindi movie playback singing.

Then there was a long hiatus. In 2005 he sang, Jiya Dhadak Dhadak for Kalyug. He has sung too many wonderful and super hit songs for various movies. But amazingly, I never liked his solo album Charkha which was a big hit too. Below is the list of some of his most popular songs that are my absolute favorite too.

1) Teri Yaad Saath (Namaste London)

2) Bol Na Halke Halke (Jhoom Baraber Jhoom)

3) Naina Thag Laingey (Omkara)

4) Jag Soona Soona Laage (Om Shanti Om)

5) O Re Piya (Aaja Nachle)

6) Teri Ore (Singh Is King)

7) Aj Din Chadeyaa (Love Aaj Kal)

What should I say? How should I place my words in the right order such that they can rightly applaud Abbas effort of reviving the aroma of the master piece ” Raat Yun Dil Mein Teri Yaad Aye“. I must say it takes courage to even think of doing justice by re-arranging and singing a master piece that has already found it’s place in the hearts and minds of thousands and thousands of Faiz lovers. I have always believed throughout these years that perhaps it is only Nayyar’s voice that can picture the depth of Faiz’s poetic artistry , especially these lines makes time stand still

Raat yun dil mein teri, khoyi hui yaad aayi,
Jaise viraane mein chupke se bahaar aa jaye,
Jaise sahraaon mein haule se chale baad-e-naseem,
Jaise bimaar ko be-wajaah quraar aa jaaye.

One of my friend forwarded me Abbas Ali khan’s cover of “Raat Yun Dil mein teri yaad aye”, I was never expecting it to be as relaxing and soothing as a somber autumn breeze. I repeatedly listened it for a while with my eyes closed , a dreamy composition in a blend with Abbas vocals pulled my hand and draws me back in time. It feels like , if I was watching the dance of the silence as raindrops hymn..

Hat’s off to Abbas Ali khan and surely this industry needs mature musicians like him.. Wish to hear more from his side in future.

a ghazal of Hafiz

Joseph who was lost will come back again to Canaan; be not grieved.

One day the hut of sorrows will become a rose garden; be not grieved.

This saddened heart will change its state (for the better); do not make thy heart bad.

And this frenzied head will settle down again; be not grieved.

If the Springtime of Life will be back again on the garden’s throne,

thou wilt pull a canopy of roses over thy head; O sweetly singing bird, be not grieved.

O heart, if the torrent of troubles engulfs the foundation of existence,

when thou hast Noah for a captain, from the storm be not grieved.

If one day the spinning wheel (of fortune) did not run according to my wishes,

the state of revolving will not always be the same; be not grieved.

Come, do not despair when thou art not aware of the secret of the Unseen;

behind the veil there be hidden plays; be not grieved.

If thou wouldst walk in the desert with the desire of reaching the Ka‘bah,

if the thorn of the acacia hurts thee, be not grieved.

Though the stage of the journey be quite perilous, and the goal so far away,

there is no path that does not have an end; be not grieved.

My state is in the separation of souls and the persistence of the antagonist.

The Lord of the revolving state knows all; be not grieved.

Hâfiz, in the corner of spiritual poverty and the seclusion of the dark nights,

as long as thou art saying prayers and dhikr and studying the Qur’ân, be not grieved.

“Aapki Parchhaayian” (1964), like “Anpadh” (1962) was one movie that enhanced Madan Mohan’s repulation as being the ghazal king of Bollywood music world. In both these movies Raja Mehdi Ali Khan was the lyricist who penned some unforgettable songs.

Here is one such song from “Aapki Parchhaayian” (1964). It is sung by Rafi. It is picturised on Dharmendra and Supriya Chaudhary.

Dharmendra needs no introduction, but who is Supriya Chatterji. Is she a one movie wonder ? Some search told me that she was also the heroine in “Begaana” (1963) opposite Dharmendra and in “Door Gagan ki Chhaon Mein” opposite Kishore Kumar. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. She is a major star is Bangla movies and she formeda lead pair with Uttam Kumar in Bangla movies in 1960s and 1970s. I recall now that the town where I was growing up had one movie hall that often showed Bangla movies and the publicity of this movie ( as was the case those days) was done by a person seated in a rickshaw distributing pamplets and making announcement about the movie. All these Bangla movies had the same lead cast viz Uttam KUmar and Supriya Chatterji. Listeneing to this publicity, I thought that Uttam Kumar and Supriya Chatterji were the only actors in Bangla movies those days.

Well, this post is about this song, and it is a gem of a song. There are other such gems in this movie as well.

Song-Main nigaahen tere chehre se hataaun kaise (Aapki Parchhaayian) (1964) singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics

main nigaahen tere chehre se hataaun kaise
main nigaahen tere chehre se hataaun kaise
lut gaye hosh to phir hosh mein aaun kaise
main nigaahen tere chehre se hataaun kaise
main nigaahen

chhaa rahi thi teri mahki huyi zulfon ki ghataa
teri aankhon ne
teri aankhon ne pilaa di to main peetaa hi gayaa
taubaa taubaa taubaa taubaa taubaa taubaa
wo nashaa hai ke bataaun kaise
main nigaahen

meri aankhon mein gile-shikwe hain aur pyaar bhi hai
aarzuen
aarzuen bhi hain aur hasrat-e-deedaar bhi hai
itne toofaan toofaan
itne toofaan main aankhon mein chhupaaun kaise
main nigaahen

shokh nazren ye sharaarat se na baaz aayengi
kabhi roothengi
kabhi roothengi kabhi mil ke palat jaayengi
tujh se nibh jaayegi
nibh jaayegi
tujh se nibh jaayegi main in se nibhaaun kaise
main nigaahen tere chehre se hataaun kaise
