I mentioned this in my first post, but I’m all about streaking into the unknown. Or so I say. Last night on my way back from a friend’s apartment I was terrified of tumbling down the steep, muddy shortcut to my room. I kind of inched down the hill on my butt to keep my center of gravity as close to the ground as possible. The way I explained it, I was imitating a kabuki show I watched when I was a kid – one about mushrooms that spring to life and wreak havoc. I inched downhill like a kabuki mushroom. I’m clearly a badass…
Anyway… I need material for stories to tell my grandkids when I’m 125, incontinent and subsisting on a low-cholesterol, high-fiber diet of prunes and celery. Assuming I live that long, of course. (Here’s hoping!) I’ll come up with a “things to do before I die” list eventually, but here’s one for starters:

#2 “I said hey, what’s going on, sweet child of mine?”

While trying to figure out the name of the song stuck in my head today (something by Reel Big Fish… (turns out to be “Victory over Peter Bones” v(^o^))), I first came up with two other candidates songs.

I also noticed, these two songs have an uncanny familiarity, like twins seperated at birth:

The quieter moments of “Victory over Peter Bones” and “Sweet Child of Mine” are soooo similar… And then, just try singing “Sweet Child of Mine” where she would sing “What’s going on”. Weird, huh?

Gake no Ue no Ponyo, Ponyo sobre el acantilado o con el lamentable titulo que se encuentra ahora mismo en las salas de cine mexicanas: El secreto de la sirenita. Hoy por fin vi Ponyo sobre el acantilado, después de contenerme una vez que la descargue, después de dos retrasos de su estreno, al fin pude entrar al cine a ver la película más reciente de Studio Ghibli y de Hayao Miyazaki.

Ponyo nos narra la historia de una pececita (no es una sirena) que es hija de un hechicero del fondo del mar y la madre naturaleza, por mero azar Ponyo conoce a Sosuke, un chico de cinco años que vive en la casa justo encima de un acantilado, El chico y Ponyo se encariñaran, a partir del encuentro con su nuevo amigo, Ponyo querrá dejar de ser pez y convertirse en humana.

La historia definitivamente se parece al cuento de la sirenita que después se convirtió en la película de La sirenita de Disney, sin embargo Ponyo sobre el acantilado es más una historia de la fuerte amistad que se da entre los niños, ancianos y adultos, unos seres maravillosos sacados más de la cabeza de Miyazaki que del fondo marino y de la fuerza que llega a tener la naturaleza.

El arte es muy destacable, muy parecida a las anteriores obras de Studio Ghibli, pero esta vez con una animación, pienso, muy artesanal, me refiero a que no se ve que se haya abusado de la computadora, más bien parce que todo fue dibujado cuadro por cuadro, coloreado y al fin animado para que lo veamos en pantalla.

Mi opinión y porque cuando he hablado de películas siempre pongo un número es 10/10, pero nunca perdiendo de vista que es una película dirigida a niños muy pequeños.

Aprovechen que pocas veces hay la oportunidad de disfrutar una película animada japonesa en nuestros cines, además no creo que dure mucho en las salas de cine, si ya de por sí solo está en una y de las más pequeñas.

El acantilado

Buena parte del incesante y creciente flujo de turistas que llega a Japón lo hace empujado por su pasión por el manga o el anime. Y si de anime se trata, no hay duda de que Hayao Miyazaki, el gran creador de joyas cinematográficas como Nausicaa y el valle del viento, Mi vecino Totoro o la oscarizada El viaje de Chihiro es el responsable primero de la propagación de la filia por el anime en todo occidente.

Escondido en una pequeña localidad a las afueras de la todopoderosa capital, el museo de los estudios dirigidos por el gran Miyazaki se acurruca entre la maleza y algunos jardines con su arquitectura fantástica coronada, a modo de King Kong, por el robot de una de sus mejores películas, El castillo de Laputa.

El museo, como tal, no tiene un recorrido prefijado, sino que sus limitadas dimensiones, divididas en diferentes estancias temáticas, se deja visitar libremente, sin más brújula que la que guía nuestra curiosidad. Desde habitaciones que recrean el estudio de trabajo del maestro, hasta otras dedicadas a sus últimas producciones, todas ellas ofrecen pistas claras sobre el proceso creativo de una obra de anime de la envergadura de los largometrajes de la Ghibli. Y sin duda es esta la mejor baza de un museo más coqueto que enorme, más humilde que pretencioso, más rendido al homenaje a la animación que al universo mágico de Ghibli. Muestras de escenas y de su elaborada composición, ejemplos palpables de técnicas de filmación de la animación, fotogramas por doquier y abundantes retazos de personajes, escenarios y momentos inolvidables, adornan cada rincón de los entresijos de una casa-museo deliberadamente desordenada, caótica y que fantasea con la imaginación desde sus escaleras espirales hasta los vitrales, desde los pomos de las puertas hasta las lámparas.

Unos pocos pasos en el interior del museo y un@ ya se encuentra totalmente imbuido de la magia y la ternura de la animación de Ghibli, muy en particular en su estancia más impactante, la más cercana a la entrada del mismo, que es todo un homenaje a la animación artesanal, mostrando didácticamente las bases de la misma y la mecánica esencial de un proceso complejo y ciertamente mágico. Aunque la magia, en realidad, está condensada en la instalación giratoria que, con centenares de reproducciones en miniatura de los personajes de Mi vecino Totoro en múltiples posturas ligeramente diferentes las unas de las otras, muestra de manera palpable y evidente la magia de la animación como un servidor jamás había visto. Cíclicamente, la instalación empieza a girar y con ella todos los muñequitos y cuando una luz estroboscópica empieza a tomar cartas en el asunto, los personajes súbitamente cobran vida correteando por el escenario mientras l@s asistentes no salen de su asombro, especialmente al detenerse de nuevo el mecanismo y comprobar, sin atisbo de duda, que aquello que se movía no eran más que pequeños muñecos inanimados de plástico repartidos por un decorado inicialmente estático e inmóvil. Sencillo pero efectivo, emocionante y ilusionante.

En otra estancia, una versión enorme del gato-bús de la misma película, de peluche, hace las delicias de l@s más pequeñ@s, que se encaraman a sus lomos afelpados mientras sus padres les observan con ganas reprimidas de subirse.

En la planta superior, una tienda convenientemente embutida de todo tipo de memorabilia remata las ilusiones de l@s visitantes, que se acaban llevando camisetas, fotogramas, tazas, juegos, imanes y postales de sus imaginarios preferidos.

Y como cúlmen de la visita, una sesión cinematográfica de una pieza corta inédita del maestro Miyazaki, de un catálogo amplio de cortos nunca xhibida o editada en DVD, que redondea la visita del más exigente de los fans.

Es, en definitiva, un museo que sabe jugar como nadie su gran baza, la fantasía acumulada de l@s asistentes, esa ternura reprimida con el paso de los años a la que las películas de Miyazaki tan hábilmente consigue despertar, cinta tras cinta, fantasía tras fantasía.

NOTA: El Museo Ghibli limita el número de visitas por día, con lo que un@ no puede presentarse en el museo y esperar que le dejen acceder. Cada primero de mes, el museo pone a la venta las entradas disponibles para el resto del mes y estas tan sólo pueden comprarse en algunas máquinas de vending que se encuentran en las tiendas “combini” de 24 horas. Si queréis comprarlas, pedid ayuda a algún dependiente, puesto que las instrucciones están completamente en japonés.

Yep, they actually have four volumes of manga of Howl’s Moving Castle. Many of Studio Ghibli’s works have gotten the manga treatment. This is just the one I like well enough to get. Now if they had Whisper of the Heart . . .

Aham. Anyway, it is very interesting. Basically it looks like they took tons (and I mean hundreds at least) of screenshots  and added speech bubbles to the appropriate shots. The effect is you really are reading the movie. There is nothing new added to the story or any difference. Still it was a very interesting experience. This method also lets you slow down and admire Miyazaki’s art if you so desire. I will recommend the manga for three groups of people in particular:

1. If you loved the movie so much you want everything related to it (this would be my category).

2. This would be nice to take on a long trip or a vacation in the middle of no where with no way to watch movies.

3. If you have a reluctant reader who enjoyed the movie, this might be something to try with them – especially since reluctant readers learn better visually.

In early 2010, the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Japan will screen an all-new Ghibli-animated anime short exclusively in its 80-person cinema. The new short was written and planned by Hayao Miyazaki and directed by Akihiko Yamashita, the production director for Ponyo and Gedo Senki.

The short, titled Chuu-Zumou (Mouse Sumo), is a little vignette about an old man (Jii) and woman (Baa) who live in the heart of the mountains. One evening, Jii discovers a place where the mice gather and practice sumo. After finding out that the mice in their house lose all the time at sumo, Jii and Baa try their best to help them out.

The short starts showing on January 3rd, the first day the museum is open after the New Year holiday, and will stop showing on February 28. So, who wants to join me in going to the Ghibli museum next year? I haven’t been yet – though I have been to the Osamu Tezuka museum in Kyoto – and this would be a good excuse to go.

Time Out’s list of the 50 greatest animated films, curated by Terry Gilliam, shows a large number of films from Studio Ghibli, including the top film! These are good times fo Ghibli, at least in Spain:

• Ponyo on the cliff was broadly played during the summer an has just been released on DVD, as is Whisper of the Heart (#21).
• Totoro (#1) is being shown in some cinemas (ok, only two in the city of Madrid), and the DVD is due on December 9th.

Ayayay… Ro på! Klippet hér er ren gourmet, men tempoet er atypisk for filmen.

Sammenholdt med Up, som det meste af Danmark (med rette) iler i bifferne for at se, er Miyazakis næste film ikke vanlig kost for underholdningsmættede sjæle. Up overrasker, men leverer trods alt en vare, vi kender. Miyazaki stiller krav.

Jeg kan huske hvor overrasket jeg blev, da jeg for tre år siden vandrede alene ind og så Min nabo Totoro i Cinemaxx. Jeg havde på dét tidspunkt set Chihiro og Heksene og et par andre Miyazaki-film, og jeg havde nok forventet lidt af et actiondrama. Men Totoro er, ligesom Ponyo, lavet til små børn og tempoet er et helt andet, end dét vi er vandt til at se i moderne tegnespillefilm. Ikke desto mindre kom jeg mig over overraskelsen og nød Totoro i fulde drag.

Jeg synes Miyazaki er supermodig og røvsej, når han nu igen søsætter et småbørnsprojekt. Hans film serverer i forvejen ikke tolkninger på et sølvfad. De er meget åbne, filosofiske og svævende. Når man tilsætter de smukke tegninger og bevægelser i billederne, får man en fantastisk jordnær (jah, det er paradoksalt) oplevelse . Det er en cocktail, som jeg dyrker at dyrke, for jeg kan mærke, at Miyazaki og Ghibli kræver meget mere af mig, end Pixar eksempelvis gør med Up, som jeg kort beskrev i det forgående indlæg. Jeg er dog ikke sikker på, at man bør sammenligne de to stilarter. De gør noget helt forskelligt og bidrager begge med en kreativitet, der får hårene til at rejse sig og øjnene til at løbe i vand.

Hvis du ikke har tålmodighed til Totoro, Kiki eller Ponyo (det ovenstående klip er sandsynligvis meget mere actionpræget end resten af filmen), så prøv at se nogle af Miyazakis andre film:

Avant de débuter cet article, je dois grandement remercier Bababaloo qui m’a permis de jouer en avant-première à Ni no Kuni. Je m’étais résigné à l’idée de laisser passer la chance de me procurer cette démo qui était offerte aux visiteurs du stand Level-5 au TGS ( et encore, c’était aléatoire, puisqu’il y avait une chance sur deux de repartir avec l’autre cadeau : un DVD contenant les trailers des productions à venir du studio japonais. ) jusqu’au jour où il me contacta pour que je lui fournisse mes coordonnées. Etant donné qu’il connaît mon attachement pour les productions du Studio Ghibli, et qu’il sait à quel point j’attendais de pouvoir jouer à Ni no Kuni, il a mis tout en oeuvre pour me dégoter la démo, dans le plus grand secret. Une semaine plus tard, j’avais le précieux paquet entre les mains ( accompagné d’un petit mot ! ) venu tout droit du Japon. C’est ce qui s’appelle de la générosité et de l’efficacité, vous ne trouvez pas ? Alors merci merci mon ami pour ce cadeau inestimable !

Ni no Kuni, c’est tout d’abord un trio de grande classe , jugez plutôt : Level-5 à la conception, le Studio Ghibli à la direction artistique, et le légendaire Joe Isaishi à la bande-son. En introduction de la démo, ces trois noms sont martelés à l’écran, histoire que le joueur comprenne à quel point cette association se révèle exceptionnelle. Hayao Miyazaki détestant les jeux vidéo, il aura fallu compter sur l’enthousiasme du président Toshio Suzuki, mais également sur le planning du Studio Ghibli. Et gros coup de chance, puisque rien de particulier n’était prévu après la fin de la création de Ponyo. De quoi laisser tout le temps nécessaire aux artistes pour la conception des 5 minutes d’animation qu’il fournissent par mois à Level-5 ! Dis comme ça, ça semble peu, mais pour ceux qui connaissent un peu le métier, c’est tout l’inverse…

Après une rapide introduction mêlant textes et illustrations, on assiste à la première séquence animée made in Ghibli, et autant vous le dire tout de suite, c’est l’extase totale. La compression est excellente, l’animation est irréprochable et la musique de Joe Hisaishi finit de vous achever. Le rêve du fan que je suis à l’idée de vivre une aventure dans un monde du Studio Ghibli est désormais une réalité. Rien que pour ça, c’est déjà magique ! Passons à l’histoire, ( je vais essayer de la faire courte… )  dans cette démo, on apprend que le monde parallèle ( Ni no Kuni / The Another Word ) est sous l’emprise d’un sorcier maléfique prénommé Jahbo. Depuis son apparition, il a interdit l’utilisation de la magie, et emprisonne tout personne osant le défier. Shizuku, le petit personnage avec une lanterne accrochée au nez pense qu’Oliver, simple garçon de son état, sera capable de ramener la paix dans son monde. Ce dernier, après avoir émis quelques réservations légitimes quant au succès de l’entreprise, décide finalement de suivre Shizuku dans son périple. Il apprendra la magie, découvrira ce monde parallèle, et tentera de retrouver l’âme d’une personne proche, récemment disparue.

Dans son déroulement, Ni no Kuni reste un RPG typiquement japonais. On enchaîne les combats aléatoires, on traverse les villages à la recherche d’informations, on se déplace sur la ” world map “… le tout dans un univers aux couleurs châtoyantes et à la bande-son divine. Le système de combat se rapproche énormément d’un Dragon Quest, avec une nouveauté appréciable : on peut déplacer ses personnages sur le champ de bataille. Il en résulte de ce fait des possibilités tactiques plus nombreuses que dans la série phare de Square Enix. Selon votre emplacement, votre personnage frappera plus fort l’ennemi, mais en contrepartie il sera davantage exposé aux assauts de celui-ci. Un système qui impose une vraie réflexion lors des combats contre les Boss. Dans les villages, Oliver et Shizuku pourront récolter des points de ” moralité ” ( parfois nécessaires pour avancer dans l’histoire ) en résolvant les petits soucis des habitants ou en accomplissant des quêtes. On utilise d’ailleurs par moment le livre magique ( qui sera fourni en pack dans la version finale du jeu… ) qui “ libère des sorts “ en traçant un symbole à l’aide du stylet sur l’ecran tactile. 

J’en parlais un peu plus haut, la réalisation de Ni no Kuni est l’un des nombreux points forts du titre de Level-5. Vous vous en doutez, il s’agit à l’heure actuelle du plus beau jeu de la portable de Nintendo. Les couleurs resplendissantes, les modèles 3D des personnages, et la patte Ghibli qui fait toute la différence. Ni no Kuni est un véritable enchantement pour les yeux…et pour les oreilles. Toutes les musiques ont été enregistrées par un orchestre philarmonique avec Joe Hisaishi à sa tête. Pour un premier essai, c’est véritablement un coup de maître. Le main theme du jeu qui vous accueille à l’écran titre est juste somptueux. Et je ne vous parle même pas de celui de la “ map “. J’ai laissé la console tourner un long moment avant de reprendre ma route vers le village… On reconnait vraiment tout de suite son style, avec des variations dans le rythme ( on passe d’une envolée lyrique à une douce mélodie à la flûte… ) et ces changements d’ambiance qui viennent happer l’auditeur. Quel talent.

Voilà je termine cet article, après avoir bouclé à plusieurs reprises la démo. Il me tarde de poursuivre l’aventure de Ni no Kuni. Sa réalisation de toute beauté ( aaaahh les petits effets graphiques et sonores : mouvement des nuages, les raies de lumière à travers les bois, le clapotis de l’eau, les oiseaux et les fourmis à la queue leu leu à la sortie de la forêt ), ses musiques extatiques, ses personnages hauts en couleur, les séquences animées du Studio Ghibli…ça va être difficile de patienter jusqu’au printemps prochain ! Mais rien que pour cette heure passée en sa compagnie, laissez-moi encore une fois clamer haut et fort : merci bababaloo ! Je vous laisse avec l’album Flickr qui contient quelques captures supplémentaires de la démo. Je ne vais pas m’étendre sur Inazuma ( très sympa ), ni Professeur Layton ( toujours aussi bon ). J’ai terminé les deux démos pour débloquer la surprise ( excellente ) de cette cartouche. Pour ceux qui voudraient savoir, la réponse se trouve également dans l’album !

The films of Hayao Miyazaki are pure imagination painted on screen. Full of warmth and madness, they stay with you long after watching.

I honestly don’t know whether it’s because Japanese storytelling conventions are very different from ours, or whether it’s just cos they’re bonkers, but when wacky insanity happens in Japanese films, the characters tend to just accept it and get on with the story. Soot gremlins in the loft? Well of course there are. A big furry monster at the bottom of the garden? Mmm, lets snuggle on his tummy. It makes for a dreamlike experience, imagination unfettered by the need for logic or rationality. My kind of world.

Whenever I watch a Studio Ghibli film I feel like I’ve been hugged by a mad but beloved auntie with a nutty story to tell. (Apart from Grave of the Fireflies which will harsh your vibe for a week. Seriously.)

And of course, the animation is spectacular. I found this compilation of clips from Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Laputa, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Howl’s Moving Castle and Nausicaa. Ignore the music and feast your eyes on the visuals. Don’t you want to visit some of these places? Be aware it’s not just empty spectacle. You’ll be dazzled, but you’ll care.

Seiji and Shizuka Performing "Take Me Home Country Roads"

Story: 10/10
Mimi wo Sumaseba, which literally means If You Listen Closely, tells the story of Shizuku, a junior-high school student who is struggling to find out who she is. The movie takes you on a journey through her imagination and daily life as she makes decisions that will ultimately decide her future.

This is the first anime movie I watched,Ghibli movie too, that wasn’t packed with interruptions and magic to HELP the characters fall in love. Their love is PURE and honest that even if the plot moves very slow, its adorable. Whisper of the Heart helped me through one of my worst years, as its calming atmosphere and charming love story brings a smile to my fave every time I watch it. The movie takes place over either a few weeks or a week, it’s not really clear on that, then shows Shizuka’s struggle through two months. The slow pace of it builds to the sweet ending, but I just wish they would have kissed, or an epilogue could have been inserted after the credits.
Also, this movie is kind of a spin-off of the Ghibli movie “The Cat Returns“. If you’ve seen the movie, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Other than that, Whisper of the Heart still remains my favorite Ghibli movie.

Art: 10/10
I’m a huge fan of the Ghibli style. The thing I was a little unsure about was how the characters looked older than they actually were. I did like the character designs, as each character had their own look. The backgrounds were beautifully done, as always. The Baron seemed to be the one the animators paid most attention too. He and his “mate” were so intricately detailed and beautiful, that he stole the scenes he was in! Don’t get me wrong, I loved the Baron, and the story Shizuka created with him.

Sound: 10/10
I watched this movie 3 years ago for the first time, and in English. I think Im being weird when I say that I prefer the English script over the Japanese, but the Japanese voices over the English. Seiji’s voice is so much more adorable in the original Japanese, and not deep and weird sounding (No offense to David Gallagher, who I used to crush on during my 7th Heaven days). The background music was quirky and sweet, and I loved it. My favorite BGM music is the one that plays while Shizuka is storming home, calling Seiji a STUPID JERK. ITs so funny. The entire theme song, “Take Me Home, Country Roads” used to be one of my favorite songs, and hearing it in Japanese was amazing. Now I prefer the Japanese over the English version.

Character: 10/10
Every single character in this movie is a pleasure to watch, their stories each being different. My favorite just happens to be Seiji (Though I love even more in the manga.), who loved Shizuka for who she was. And his violin playing, I think, was the thing that started my love for the violin. Shizuka is just a girl who likes Fairy Tales and is trying to figure herself out. The love between these two characters is so cute and overflowing, and HONEST. I will never stop saying that. Their love is honest. Nothing twisted their minds, no magic was involved, no one tried to ruin them. Nothing you usually see in anime. No, Ghibli did an amazing job at keeping their love sweet and honest. I never cried once, though I did fan-girl over the romance and Seiji. LOL

Overall Enjoyment: 10/10
I cannot just watch this movie once in a sitting. No, usually I watch it twice, when I have it. I have yet to own in, but it is on my list if things to buy, at the very top. It’s such a cute, honest, beautiful movie, and the manga (Mimi wo Sumaseba) isn’t bad either! Ghibli knows how to tell stories that make me smile. Like I said, if I watch this movie when I’m depressed, it lifts all the pain away and makes me happy. Anyone who likes slow paced, pure romances, will love this movie. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone out there. It’s worth watching, and you will not be disappointed.

Para todos aquellos amantes de la animación japonesa o mejor dicho, del Studio Ghibli (como es mi caso), hoy os traigo una gran y buena notícia, bueno más bien 3 .

Después de 10 años de la última aparición de Isao Takahata con la película Mis vecinos los Yamada,  reaparece por el mundo del cine para dirigir la película del Studio Ghibli, Taketori Monogatari (La historia del cortador de bambú).

Se trata de una adaptación de un antiguo tradicional cuento japonés muy popular. Aun no se sabe cómo será la película, si seguirá al pie de la letra del cuento original o no. Se calcula que se estrenará en el 2010 en Japón, así que ya irán saliendo notícias.

La película narra la historia de Kaguya – hime (princesa de la noche radiante), una princesa procedente de la luna. Un día, un anciano llamado Taketori no Okina (anciano cortador de bambú), que vivía con su esposa, fue a recolectar brotes de bambú. Al cortar el bambú, encuentra en el interior de éste a una niña del tamaño del dedo pulgar. Taketori no Okina decide llevarse a su casa y criarla como si de  hija se tratase.  Desde entonces, siempre que Taketori cortaba un tronco de bambú, encontraba un pepita de oro en su interior.

La segunda y tercera gran notícia es que se ha confirmado que Hayao Miyazaki dedicará estos 3 años  a dirigir unas dos nuevas películas. Aun no se sabe nada acerca de ellas, ni de la historia, ni nada.  Pero para mí continúa siendo una gran notícia !!

P.D: He encontrado la historia aquí, lo que como es seguro segurísimo que vea la nueva película de Isao, prefiero no leerla por si hay algún spoiler de los grandes !
