Vathikuchi - a free auto ride!

Fox Star studios and A R Murgadoss have almost pulled it off the second time as well, after their stupendous hit in Engeyum Eppodhum in 2011. This definitely is a novel attempt with suburban chennai as the back drop for the romantic scenes and housing board colonies for the cat and mouse games played by the hero and the villains.

The screenplay was racy and there weren’t any dull moments. However, it looked like we are watching two different movies one with the romantic track and the other, the thriller track. Even the heroine does not believe that the hero might have thrilling issues in life, for he leads his life in such a carefree manner.

There are three groups of people who are after Dileepan’s life in the movie, right from the beginning of the movie and there is a parallel track in which he tries to woo a girl in his neighborhood, played by Anjali. Dileepan plays the role of a share auto driver and most of the romantic scenes happen inside the share auto. The story revolves around how he gets Anjali and how he manages to evade the three groups from taking his life. Among the three groups, the reasons why his friend Jagan and his co-workers want him killed is too far-fetched to believe. However, the passion with which the sequences unfold when they try to kill him and how he dodges them was gripping.
The other sequence where he dodges the goon Sampath Raj and his henchmen was also done very intelligently. The soliloquy by the protagonist throughout the movie was very well done. There was a lot of scope for lighter moments but somehow the director did not make use of them well, especially the sequences where Anjali attends the English speaking course.

Acting by Dileepan, Anjali, Saranya, and Jegan were high quality, whereas Sampath Raj, Jeyaprakash, Pattimandram Raja don’t make any significant contribution with their acting in the movie. Music by Ghibran is very well done, especially the background score, which keeps you riveted in the sequences. A little more expressions by Dileepan would have added verve to the movie, for he looks super confident that nothing would happen to him.

I had to write this for my English class in high school. It’s based on the style of writing in The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. I chose to do the topic of “Good and Evil”

And the elder said, “Speak to us of Good and Evil.”

Kalavaani is one of my most favourite films to date and literally summed up my trip to India in 2010. Boy, the efforts I had to go through to see this in the cinema – firstly, a trip that took 2 hours(!) from KK Nagar to Woodlands (Dinakaran listings said it was showing but got there to find out it had been replaced some dubbed English film – :@) but we finally managed to see it at some unknown cinema on the outskirts of town!

Anyways enough rambling, Sargunam – the director of Kalavaani is using Vimal again in a period film called “Vaagai Sooda Vaa”. Looks amazing and the music is even more amazing especially this song – Sarasara Saarakaathu. Ever so beautifully sung by Chinmayi! She’s definitely the new queen bee of Tamil playback singing! Her rendition adds so much life to the song and love how she’s brought a native feel to it too! Talking of nativity, the entire credit goes to Vairamuthu sir for such heartfelt lyrics – only God knows how he understands a girl’s heart better than a girl!

Only one thing to say about music director Ghibran – he’s definitely here to stay! A very impressive debut!
