Technically, I could have chosen *any* song from the Tom Joad album, but this one has always meant a lot to me. Bruce at his best: a simple guitar picking pattern, great dynamics in his voice, an evocative, graphic writing style. It’s a movie that unfolds in front of our eyes.

A favorite story of mine involving Bruce happened at Live Aid. The story went that Tom Petty was about to follow Springsteens set. Petty was in the wings with Jackson Browne, and the crowd was screaming and screaming BBBBRRRRUCE….Jackson told Petty, “don’t worry, they aren’t booing you, they are saying Bruce, to which Petty says dryly “what’s the difference”!

It’s really hard to explain to folks who weren’t there just how big Springsteen was in the early 80′s. When “Born in the USA” came out, it was beyond big. Of course the old “Boss” fans felt he was selling out and it was too commercial. Springsteen was just traveling on his own musical journey and to prove it, the next record was recorded at his kitchen table. The record “Nebraska” was dark, haunting, and yet beautiful. Stripped down and bare, real and raw.

Springsteen has done this many times, with hip LA records like …….and another stark story in the form of “The Ghost of Tom Joad”.

There is a long road of Springsteen music to choose from. Hard Jersey barroom, Pop rock, singer songwriter. He is the Boss. A True American, believer and searcher of truth. He has great things to share in his music. Give him a try.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the man I used to call Jesus, years in fact. When I first moved to Winnipeg in the early 1990′s he was already a fixture on the Osborne Village sidewalks. He was always dressed for the cold it seemed, ratty old blue parka, beat up winter boots and a heavy beard.

He was always dirty of course, living on the margins of society for so long. His hair was normally pretty wild and natty. But for some strange reason I found him to be the most agreeable person on the street those days. Most panhandlers back then were pretty aggressive. They would get in your face demanding a smoke or some of the hard-earned change in your pocket. All the while wearing ratty clothes but somehow the new sneakers gave them away. They may have experimented with the lifestyle but they sure were not living it the way he did.

Living on the streets for a night or two I think most people could imagine, but this man lived day in and day out on and around Osborne Village for as long as anyone I spoke to could remember. Rumours abounded that he had a family once, that he had a job, a nice house and a car. All of those things that society uses to judge us a success or a failure. Now he just survived.

For those of you that do not understand the weather in Winnipeg let me tell you with no hint of jest that winters here are more than just a nuisance they can kill. On a beautiful winters day, sun shining with blue sky as far as the eye can see the temperatures often drop below -40. When it’s that cold it’s seek shelter or die.

Somehow this man, this legend of the street had managed to survive. When I would walk down the streets bundled up in the cold like any sane person I naturally avoid groups of vagrants. Never knowing if a simple conversation over loose change would turn ugly. But for this man I often crossed the street towards him. He never asked for money from me, ever. But I gave it just the same, I didn’t feel obligated to judge him like others who worked the mean streets. I felt he had suffered enough and I shared what little I could.

He always seemed most grateful, a smile crossed his dirty teeth. He may have been repugnant to look at but he was genuine in his gratitude. Most of the time he said a quick thank you and lowered his gaze back to the street where it had been moments earlier.

I am not a very spiritual man but it just seemed right to me to help this lost soul. I honestly don’t know if he drank the money away or if he used it to buy food and shelter. But for him I never worried too much about it, like John Lennon said. “Whatever gets you through the night, it’s alright.”

I often wonder what happened to Jesus of Osborne Village. Did he finally die of exposure, or did he move on to Vancouver like so many of our homeless do? Did his family come and find him, taking him away from the life on the bitter streets? I don’t know?

What I do know though is that there are people on our streets now, some by choice, some by circumstance. Try not to judge too harshly in these coming weeks. It’s cold out there and it’s Christmas time, do what you can to help if you feel it in your heart.

One of the better foundations here in Winnipeg dedicated to helping the homeless is the Ladybug Foundation. Founded by Hanna Taylor, a child who wondered where the homeless went to eat, and decided to help out. Her story is one of boundless enthusiasm and compassion. She was not afraid of the homeless she saw them as human, as someone who needed help. If you have it in you to give, hers is a worthy cause.

I’ll get down off my soap box now. Thanks for listening.

P.S. Heres a little music to help you think about the problem of homelessness courtesy of Bruce Springsteen and Tom Morello.

I’m so excited to welcome everybody to a new feature on Bridget & Bruce. Believe it or not

I’m so excited to welcome everybody to a new feature on Bridget & Bruce.

Believe it or not, it gets tiring talking about yourself every day. So, I thought it would be interesting to interview some professional musicians in Nashville to see how Bruce has affected them in their musical journeys as well. First up, Barry Walsh!

Barry is one of Nashville’s top piano men. In his career, he has played gigs with Roy Orbison and Jimmy Webb. He’s written songs for Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, The Amazing Rhythm Aces and others, and spent 30 years making a living in Nashville recording studios, where the magic happens.

And quite frankly, he’s cooler than you and I combined.

Enjoy!

Can you remember the first time you heard a Springsteen song?
No, but I remember hearing “Greeting’s From Asbury Park, N.J.” the first year it came out, in 1973. I was living in Nashville, but I had moved from New Jersey as a 16 year old four years before that, so it caught my eye with it’s reference to NJ. By the time I got to see him live- in a theater in Portland, OR in 1975, the same week he was on the cover of Time and Newsweek- I was a huge fan and have been ever since.

What is your favorite Springsteen album?
This one’s hard. I’d have to say I have favorites in two different categories. For Bruce alone, I would name both “Nebraska” and “The Ghost Of Tom Joad”; both there for the same reason. Primarily because of the way that the lyrics jump out at you, without Bruce’s usual rock artifice surrounding them. The intimacy of those two albums still slays me. But if I had to name a favorite Bruce with E Street Band album, it would be “The Wild, The Innocent, And The E Street Shuffle”. With colorful songs like “Kitty’s Back”, “Rosalita”, and “New York City Serenade” (and it’s sublime David Sancious piano intro), this album brings back the whole mid-seventies era for me. “The Song Remembers When” kind of thing.

How has being a Boss fan affected the music you make?
I own and operate a glockenspiel. And I’m not afraid to use it.

(Best. Response. Ever. Moving on!)

From a songwriter’s standpoint alone, what would you say sets Bruce apart from the rest?
His innate intelligence and humanity.

If you could perform one song with Bruce, what would it be? Why?
It would probably be a cover song that we both know. Why? Because I’ve seen how joyful and loose Bruce gets when he’s performing a Roy Orbison (who I got to tour with in the 80′s) or a Dylan or an old fifties song. I just think it would be fun for both of us. Also, I would never presume to be able to jump right in as a pianist and duplicate a part that Roy Bittan owns.

Barry currently lives in Nashville with his wife, Gretchen Peters and their handsome Lab, Nigel. You can follow Barry on twitter @barelywashed or visit his website. While you’re there, it’s probably in your best interest to pick up a copy of his album, The Crossing. Amazing work.

Thank you Barry!

Hamburg based indie label Grand Hotel Van Cleef might have been the biggest success story in German

Hamburg based indie label Grand Hotel Van Cleef might have been the biggest success story in German indie music over the past few years. If I remember it correctly it arose from the ashes of B.A. Records, the band-owned label which put out the records of German punkrock legend …But Alive in the 1990s. They also released some other bands, most notably The Weakerthans first two full length LP versions. When …But Alive split up at the end of the millenium some members started Kettcar, a band which sounded less punkrock and more indie, a development you could notice while listening to …But Alive‘s records in order. One could say that the last record “Hallo Endorphin” was actually the first Kettcar record.

So the first record “Du und wie viel von deinen Freunden” by Kettcar was released on Grand Hotel Van Cleef and it exploded on the scene in Germany in 2002. From what I heard they tried to get a contract with a bigger record company but when all their attempts failed they just released it all by themselves thus establishing themselves as one of Germany’s biggest and best indie acts right now. The other big name on and behind the record label is Tomte, another band also from Hamburg who first made a name for themselves in the German underground punk scene in 1998 with their first album “Du weißt was ich meine”. Next to those two bands there are a lot of other great indie artists on the label’s roster, Olli Schulz & der Hund Marie, Pale, Maritime, Death Cab For Cutie, to name but a few.

For two years now the label has been sending out their artists on a small festival tour through Germany setting up very nice concerts and pleasant and atmospheric locations. When I was visiting their first tour in 2006 in Bonn that was a really nice experience. The bands were great, the weather too and with all the people who showed up it was a great memory. As I wrote back then in an article for German indie magazine “Intro” (German) it felt like a nice afternoon you spend with friends you haven’t seen in a long time. This was all we ever dreamed of when we were younger. A festival set up and organized all by ourselves for bands and artists we like. Independent in the literal sense of the word.

Yesterday the Grand Hotel Van Cleef Festival stopped by in Cologne setting up their camp at Odonien, an area which looks like a former factoryand today is used as a room for artists (painters, sculpturers, etc.). They set up the stage on the dusty space in the middle of the area and by the time I arrived at the location it was just right for The Robocop Kraus to start their live set. I have seen this band numerous times and amodestproposal were lucky enough to share the same stage with them at a festival in Nürtingen in 2002. Great live performers who have been playing their style of music for 10 years now and they were here before bands like Bloc Party or Franz Ferdinand came out big with their stuff. Back in the days The Robocop Kraus were most likely the most stylish band in the German punk underground scene, wearing suits at their live shows all the time. Yesterday they mostly played new songs which I though sounded a little less energetic than their early works, but pretty dancefloor-like music nonetheless. Unfortunately it started to rain during their set so this spoiled the experience a little bit, but they audience didn’t seem to bother. In fact they were very well prepared regarding all the umbrellas, raincoats and other things to hide from the rain.

The big bang came when Tomte started playing as it started raining cats and dogs by that time. I was hanging around at the beer stand and took shelter under some wooden construction standing in the middle of the area thereby not really seeing what was happening on stage. But the music sounded as good as always and although it was pouring people seemed to have a lot of fun.

When Kettcar entered the stage I was already on my way home because I didn’t feel well enough to last for yet another performance. I have seen Kettcar quite a few times in the past and although I really like their records I just can’t seem to stand their live perfomances which I think are a little bit too dull. So I missed four out of six bands (the other bands who also played were I Am Kloot, Niels Frevert and Ghost of Tom Joad) but I had a good time.

Einzig erwähnenswert also höchstens The Ghost of Tom Joad und Götz Alsmann, der sogar privat mit Morrissey-Tolle rumläuft.

Klare Tendenz: Da müsste doch eigentlich mal endlich was gehen in Münster, neben Vainstream-Festival und Eurocityfest.

The Big Monkey’s friend Ron Wells went to both Anaheim shows as well as San Jose (see subsequent post) and this is what he wrote for friends and fellow fans:

“I figgered, ‘maybe it’s all men an’ all women we love; maybe that’s the Holy Sperit-the human sperit-the whole shebang. Maybe all men got one big soul ever’body’s a part of.’ Now I sat there thinkin’ it, an’ all of a suddent-I knew it. I knew it so deep down that it was true, and I still know it.” —Jim Casey, in The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

“Tom laughed uneasily, “Well maybe like Casey says, a fella ain’t got a soul of his own, but only a piece of a big one–an then—. Then it don’t matter. Then I’ll be all aroun’ in the dark. I’ll be ever’where.” —Tom Joad, in The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

The “Ghost of Tom Joad” was the heart and soul of both Anaheim shows. It was the be all and end all, the past connecting to the present with Bruce bringing Steinbeck’s Oversoul by way of Walt Whitman and tying into an arena rock concert for the masses. With homes being blown away by foreclosures and people making similar treks as those of the Joad family, on comes Bruce Springsteen with Tom Morello to remind us of those whom we’re losing connection with. It’s hard times and people are out on that road again seeking food, gas, shelter. And it doesn’t play in the media because homeless, desperate people don’t make for good photo ops, but the Joads are out there again on that long and desperate road and this time they got company once again. Morello uses his guitar, Hendrix style, to scratch out that dirty truth that America’s roads are crowded with the teeming masses searching for a job, a home, a lifeline of hope. The song brazenly screams out from the band all the rage and anger that it can muster in the face of this American Land. The sleeping ghost of Tom Joad comes forth cursing with his own rage and despair, even into Orange County, that bastion of conservative America where the poor are despised for nothing more than being poor. Still, amidst these haunting, proud, Okie ghosts, Springsteen searches for that One Big Soul that Tom and Casey spoke of.

Some of us were fortunate to get glimpses of it in Anaheim.

Thirty-something years later after seeing my first Bruce show, and I’m seeing friends I’ve known from the beginning. People who love Bruce , but love other musicians, films and anything creative this world has to offer. Friends who have stayed out into the wee hours of 1978 or 1980 and talked of life and all that that entails. Friends who have had babies who then grew up into young adults. Friends who have had parents die. Friends who waited to talk to Bruce Springsteen and got their wish. And yes, some friends who are now gone, but remain within us still. All of us sharing the joy and pain that life has to offer, and here we are once again under that all encompassing, vital force that Bruce sings about and is also a part of.

Both nights blend into one big heartbeat, one dream of hope and faith amidst a country struggling for connections. And so Bruce starts off in the dark talking to his friend Steve about seeing the coming Light of Day because “things can’t get any worse /They got to get better.” But it ain’t long until we find that there’s a bad world out there of Murder Incorporated, where you better not look too closely or you’ll realize “everywhere you look life ain’t got no soul,” which really seems correct, but which then begs the question about where those wonderous and profound connections he so often sings about are living or hiding.

Once again, “Trapped” and “Reason to Believe” present that dichotomy of “prisons” inflicted upon us as we find ourselves trapped and lost in this world, and yet we somehow, someway, find a reason to believe.

“Devil’s Arcade” presents death front and center, and haven’t we all seen enough of that in these past few years. Bruce sings that it is the beating of the heart that we must believe in, and yet Max pounds those final haunting beats until one last big bang, and then the heartbeat stops. Just like that. And the ghosts come forth.

But Bruce, like Tom Joad, never gives up. He never gives in. “Blow away the dreams that tear you apart/Blow away the the dreams that break your heart/Blow away the lies that leave you lost and broken hearted,” he sings in Promised Land. There’s a better place. You just must continue to search for the soul of the universe and become a part of it by finding all that is good within you and then connecting with that which is good in others.

On the first night, I watched closely as the band began to return for the encores. Bruce patiently waited until all had entered the stage except Clarence. The Big Man finally struggles up the stairs with Bruce’s help, and they hug. It is a touching, fitting moment of love and compassion and friendship.

With the band all on stage, Bruce rocks the arena with “Rosalita”, “Born to Run” and “Ramrod”. This is the counter balance to all the despair that has come before it. It is the connection that Bruce throws out into the arena for everyone to latch onto, as if to say, “Here are the ties that bind. Grab on to them and pass them along.”

The second night begins with the hope that we’ll “show a little faith, there’s magic in the night,” as we start off down Thunder Road. But the ghost has not left the building and it is again Tom Joad’s soul that anchors this show.

Tonight though, Bruce seeks different answers, with the possibilities of sex, relationships, and love, or at least some semblance of the love we all seek. But even in “Candy’s Room” “there’s a sadness hidden in that pretty face.” In Because the Night the one lover pleads with his partner that “Desire and hunger is the fire I breath/Just stay in my bed until the morning comes,” but eventually ends up begging “to forgive me now.” The ties that bind, those connections of the heart, aren’t easy to find. So in “Brilliant Disguise” he painfully sings, “So when you look at me you better look hard and look twice/Is that me baby or just a brilliant disguise.”

Then here comes the “Ghost of Tom Joad”, yet again, in it’s same screeching, haunting, soul stirring rendition as the night before with Bruce and Tom Morello once again tearing the guts out of that song with all of its anger and rage filling both the living souls listening intently and the ghosts of the Dust Bowl hovering nearby.

And then I saw that connection that Bruce so adamantly believes in, preaches about, and tries to convey on a nightly basis. After the joyous “Out in the Street”, the band leaves to a thunderous ovation as the arena goes dark with thousands of flickering lights dancing like stars in some finite galaxy. Being close to the stage, I notice that Clarence does not walk off with the rest of the band. Instead, he sits and waits patiently for their return. Finally, Bruce comes back and sings a quiet, piano driven “Meeting Across the River”. The arena, rather than exploding, goes quiet, mesmerized by the story of a desperate man who’s about to connect with his pal Eddie so that “Cherry won’t take a walk” out of his life. Bruce sings it as if the guy has just lost his home, his lover, and may now lose his soul.

But an amazing thing is about to happen. The piano starts anew and “Jungleland” begins in all of its splendor, a place where “lonely-hearted lovers struggle in dark corners/Desperate as the night moves on, just a look and a whisper, and they’re gone.” And the Big Man walks slowly to the center of the stage and proceeds to blow his sax like his life depended on it. The horn sends notes of hope, despair and beauty out into the night-like darkness of the arena. Soon, it quiets and Clarence stands strong and proud at center stage. Bruce waits and then walks over in the darkness of the back-lit stage and puts his arm around his friend and whispers something into his ear. I can barley contain myself. Time stands still and all the friendships this life has presented come roaring back into focus with this one embrace. Souls connecting into the One Soul that we all share.

Bruce finishes the song, “The poets down here don’t write nothing at all, they just stand back and let it all be.” Words no longer suffice, as humans look for that connection, those eternal moments that transcend time.

People say it’s only rock and roll, but an autistic boy begins to speak after listening to Springsteen songs. A mother takes her son, who is undergoing treatment for a terrible disease, to the show because she understands that you can’t put a price on one’s attempts to heal the body and spirit. A little girl dances on stage with Bruce, timeless in its simplicity and joy. Yes, it’s only rock and roll, but it’s also the redemptive power of muisc.

As the band leaves the stage, Max grabs a poster and holds it up for all to see. It reminds us to think of Danny Federici, a soul not with us tonight, but with us all the same.

I walk out into the night of thousand chattering voices, all filed with the exhilaration this life can provide, withg the power of Bruce Springsteen and the E street Band. I look up into the night sky and somewhere John Steinbeck is looking down, knowing that we are all in this together, and its our responsibility to rescue those in need, to rescue each other, for starting on the day we were born we are all enveloped in this One Soul for all eternity. You see, there are no ghosts. There are just spirits of that Soul moving around us, moving within us.

Bruce moves off into another city with Steinbeck’s Tom Joad along for the ride, while I head off in the night to meet up with my friends. The same as it’s always been. In some way, the same as it will be forever.

————-

“I will provide for you and I’ll stand by your side

If you need a good companion for this part of the ride…”—-Bruce Springsteen (The Land of Hope of Dreams)

Waiting at the back door, yes he is, the Big Monkey is standing outside the door with about 10 old friends, fellow fans and die-hards waiting for Bruce to come out. The Big Monkey hopes the Boss will sign the picture of them from the Tunnel Tour show back in 1987 (see below).

He just called on his cell, his voice hoarse and excited. Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine came out a few minutes ago and shook everyone’s hands. Earlier he played “The Ghost of Tom Joad”; later, a bunch of musicians from the Seeger Sessions came on and played at the end of the show.

“When we were standing in line, we heard it, during sound check,” he said, the thrill still in his voice. “They were playing “The Ghost of Tom Joad. When I came back about a half hour later, they were still playing it. The guard said they’d been playing it over and over the whole time. I could here someone singing but it wasn’t Bruce. About half way through the show, they called him, Tom Morello, up. It was phenomenal–the guitar work–the place was going nuts.”

Time for the Art Predator to hit the sack (someone had to go to work today and be with the kid!) Will have to post more details later…

Do you think Bruce ever came out? Did he shake the Monkey’s hand? Did he sign his photograph? What other rarities did he play? Tune in tomorrow and find out!

to tease you a bit more…here’s a Bruce version and RATM version…you will notice a difference… will watch out for the one from the show to post

(just in case Bruce’s version isn’t loading for you–it wasn’t working today when I checked but it worked last night right after the show and it works if you go to you tube–good luck–it’s a beautiful vision of a beautiful song)

Also, früh auf.

Was passiert ist? Zuviel, um alles aufzuzählen. Aber hier einige High- und Lowlights!

– Kein einziger Hersteller darf verkaufen!

Da kommt was!

- Whisk?! (wants to) meet(s) Slash!

+ Whisk?! meets Kerry King!

+ Whisk?! goes Internet TV! Halt, Gott? Nein, ihr wisst schon!) eingeschoben, und wieso? Weil Slash sich verspätet bei der Autogrammstunde. Das bedeutet – Whisk?! im Interview-Support-Slot von Slash!

+ Flyer! An viele Menschen.

Herrlich.

Cheers, Bringo
