Gage feels the heat of their stares on the back of his neck. His nerves are rattled, his muscles tense; he doesn’t need this. Turning, Gage throws up his hands, shows them empty.

“This doesn’t concern you people,” he shouts. “I’m on this man’s step because it’s between him and me. I didn’t come here to kill anybody so don’t make me change my mind.”

In the surrounding apartments curtains twitch and fall shut, blinds roll closed. Gage nods his head and turns back to Cullen’s door.

“Open this fucking door,” he says and bangs at it with closed fists. “I just want to talk. You know I can get inside on my own but if I have to slip through a shroud it’s going to hurt me.”

Gage steps back from the door. He knows Cullen; certain Cullen’s watching through the peep. “Cullen,” he says quietly. “What kind of mood will you expect to find then?

The lock clicks and the door opens a couple of inches.

Gage Malloy retired from ghosting years ago. Once the best Sword a crew could ever want, Gage is now nothing more than a worn-down bartender. But he’s okay with that; working the counter won’t get anyone killed.

But when an old friend turned enemy walks into his bar, an enemy he thought dead, he realizes you can’t escape your past. Now Gage must step back into his role as Sword and slip through the Veil one more time to stop a plot that may very well destroy both worlds.

Fast forward a few months, and they have a huge 10 track EP with remixes from names like Gucci Vump, and L-Vis 1990. The best part about the release though, is the surprise hit that is the B-side, Ghoster. This has been one of my favourite tunes of the summer, it ticks all the right boxes for me.

Ghosting

The use of counterfeit identification falsely documenting a completely fictional identity is not ghosting, as false identification cannot be used to obtain social services or interact with government agencies or law enforcement officials. The purpose of ghosting is to enable the ghoster to claim for his own use an existing identity that is already listed in government records — an identity that is dormant because its original possessor is dead.

Ghosting is based on the premise (now less justified than in previous times) that separate government agencies do not share a total exchange of information. Therefore, a ghoster can obtain a passport or Social Security benefits in the name of a dead person because the agencies in charge of those services do not routinely cross-check an applicant’s history to determine if a death certificate has been issued in that person’s name.

Some of the readers of that original post suggested some more zenware applications that they like, and I keep seeing new ones, so here is a zenware update.

Among the 12 tools I collected in the original zenware post, DarkRoom (for Windows) and WriteRoom (for the Mac) will probably have the most appeal to most web workers. They present you with tabula rasa interfaces for doing word processing, so you don’t have system trays, docks, icons and alerts staring at you or flashing at you all the time.

Readers of the original zenware post called out JDarkRoom as a similar offering that deserved highest praise. It’s a full-screen text editor that looks and works like the other two, but it also comes in a free version for Linux users. Other readers said I should have mentioned Q10 as one of the best zenware word processors.

If you like the zen effect that these word processors have, you may want to try the updated version of AlphaXP Lite,  which does a similar thing. It lets you control transparency effects for any Windows 2000 or Windows XP desktop, and you can even control fade-ins and fade-outs whenever you hover your mouse over interface components.

Lifehacker has done a good post on Dropcloth (for Windows), which lets you blank out your Windows desktop, and I previously mentioned Backdrop (for the Mac) which does the same thing. Today, Lifehacker has a good post up on Ghoster, which is a utility for Windows users that darkens everything on your Windows desktop except the active window you’re working with.

Finally, if some of these zenware applications go too far in eliminating aspects of your desktop interface that may distract you, Leo has done a good post on word processors that just naturally have very simple interfaces, free of some of the distractions you find in other applications.
