The only runner-up this week is a complete novelty, but if you were born before 1990, you’ll appreciate this modern take on a classic. People were pirating music way before Napster, and the mixtape was was of the main uses. There’s absolutely no point in owning one of these, but it still makes me smile just knowing it exists. The best thing I’ve seen this week was a movie I expected to be a complete piece of shit. In fact, the only reason I watched it was because the week before, I sat through “Ghostrider 2,” and I didn’t think it was that bad. I’m still not sure if that says more about me or the state of Hollywood in general. But I digress. After watching the trailer for “Cabin in the Woods,” I decided that it was just another dime-a-dozen slasher-kills-5-teenagers B movie. It even looked a little like they were trying to remake “Evil Dead.” I decided to give it a chance, and I’m extremely glad I did. It’s not going to win an oscar, but this was hands down one of the funnest movies I’ve seen in a while. Probably because Joss Whedon is one of the writers. Had I know that earlier, I wouldn’t have been hesitant about watching it. And now I’ll give the obligatory “BRING BACK FIREFLY“ plug.

According to an interview with MTV, Ghost Rider 2 might turn out well for us. Apparently, they are going to chuck all the cheese and make it good. Here’s what screenwriter David Goyer has to say:

“It’s not exactly a reboot,” said Goyer, who’s currently hard at work on his “FlashForward” television series. “I hate to say it’s more realistic, because he’s got a flaming skull for a head, but it’s a bit more stripped down and darker. It’s definitely changing tone. What ‘Casino Royale’ was to the Bond movies, hopefully this will be to ‘Ghost Rider.’”
The “Ghost Rider” sequel is planned to “roll before cameras next year,” according to Goyer, who also said that Nicolas Cage is currently still attached to the lead role of Johnny Blaze.

“This story picks up eight years after the first film,” said Goyer. “You don’t have to have seen the first film. It doesn’t contradict anything that happened in the first film, but we’re pretending that our audience hasn’t seen the first film. It’s as if you took that same character where things ended in the first film and then picked it up eight years later—he’s just in a much darker, existential place.”
As for where that existential place might be, Goyer wouldn’t delve into specifics—mainly because he doesn’t have to.
“My script is out there on the Internet,” he said. “We’re not changing much from it. It’ll be significantly the same script.”

Melissa George gets her boat horror on
Empire Online introduced the trailer for the upcoming boat movie, Triangle. I swear the movie looks familiar. You know what I liked it when it was called Ghost Ship, but whatever. the Check it out, see if notice. But, I will definitely watch it, I’m lame like that.

The Tall Man Comes to DVD
Phantasm III is now available on DVD. I miss the days of cool horror characters. I guess The Creeper is okay, Jigsaw was alright at first. But, we need a new one badly.

People Continue to Hire Nic Cage
Yeah, I don’t know why either, but anyway Nicky spoke with MTV about scenarios for the upcoming Ghost Rider 2. Sorry none of them involve it actually being a good movie, but oh well, we’ll still get to see his huge teeth and crazy eyes and that’s all that matters.

Anyway, Nicky talked to MTV about the mess that might be Ghostrider 2. Here’s what bad toupee had to tell us: “It looks like it will take place in Europe and the character will work with the [Catholic] Church. It’ll be a completely new experience. It’s exciting.”

While the film is still in its very early stages — no major “official” announcements have been made — Cage was happy to share with MTV everything he knew so far about the next adventures of Johnny Blaze — a former stuntman who, after a deal with Mephistopheles, becomes the vengeance-seeking Ghost Rider. “It hasn’t progressed to [who the next villain will be] yet to be able to say, but I do know it will be shot in Europe and there will be some sort of connection working with different religious figures,” he hinted.

Now, if hot old man Sam Elliot comes back riding on a horse, forget all of my earlier comments. Sam’s hot for a 700 year old man!
