Note to self: don’t repeat the mistakes of the past and use cheap NIC’s in a server!

Okay, we have three identical servers. A while a go we had problems with them falling over. It turns out the previous NM thought it was a good a idea to use sub-£50 gigabit NIC’s in a server. Three in each along with the two on-board NIC’s bonded – why so meny, we we’re not using an y virtualisation?

Any how, these cheap NIC’s started to fail and I became Mr Popular as key file servers and DC’s would BSOD and restart midday. Needless to say all 9 cards were removed as soon as I’d diagnosed the fault and all three servers ran fine on their single bonded channel.

So given this why did I, in my infanate wisdom, think – New virtual server, need a static IP management NIC, oh I have these spare. You can imagine my surprise when my shiny new (okay old server rebuilt) Windows 2008 R2 Server BSOD with half a dozen key VM’s running on it.

IF YOU CAN AFFORD TO BUY A SERVER YOU CAN AFFORD A COUPLE OF HUNDRED ON A DECENT INTEL SERVER NIC!

1 kilobit = 1000 bits.

kB (kilobyte) Otra unidad de medida de información. 1 kilobyte = 1000 bytes.

Kib (Kibibit) 1 kibibit = 1024 bits

KiB (Kibibyte) 1 Kibibyte = 1024 bytes

Megabit

Gigabit

sponsors site – online dating software. I find friends and family asking me what they should l

sponsors site – online dating software.

I find friends and family asking me what they should look in a new (or used) computer. That question is usually followed by "Should I buy a Dell?" Dell typically has good and sometimes great deals but there are profuse other virtuous computer manufacturers out there that bid a much better base system. Of course, an established company like Dell, HP, or others will volunteer a warranty that is, no mistrust, to beat. In many cases though, that warranty costs money to refuge more than one or years.

What peoplle don’t reaalize is that almost all hardware manufacturers pprovide a 1 year bond on their products. So in most cases, these companies are simply honoring the agreement on the individual components.

have in mind that there are some basics to ffinding a computer that choose last and at the time prrovide room in behalf of upgrades to extend life even further. OObviously this is a reference for non-technical people that don’t know the ins and outs of a computer.

Component Top Ten Breakdown

1. AMD 64 Processor – I think this is primary in keeping the overall cost of your computer down. Anyone would accede to that the AMD processors available today are almost always less expensive than alternative and in most cases, ddrastically out perform as well. This processor inclination adorn come of very top-level with the move to 64 operating systems and 64 bit software. Many of the newer motherboards that support the AMD processor also have up to a 2.0 GHZ front side bus which will big compensation for improvement.

2. 1024MB RAM – This is just over the industry sweet of 512MB. Doubling the memory in any structure typically is the single most actual way of noticeably improving system display

3. 256MB Video Adapter – With 256 video adapters becoming more affordable, you can find the 256MB adapters reasonable prices. The 256MB video adapter provides quite an improvement throughout the 64MB – 128 adapters which seem to be approved in most affordable systems.

4. -RW/-RW Drives – These drives are communal in all systems these days and should not byway up the price of your process very much. In some cases you can spot a dual layer DVD-RW that is affordable.

5. 5.1 Or 7.1 Channel Audio – I know assorted people will maintain with on this one but I find that there is little difference (to the average user) with integrated audio and a separate audio adapter. You can allot hundreds of dollars on latest audio adapter or you can be honnest with yourself and realize that the most you devise quite do is hear to music and settle for a wholesome integrated audio adapter.

6. SATA Hard Disk Drives – Most restored motherboards utilize this newer technology (Serial ATA). The speed of disk access is tremendously improved with this technology and it is becoming awfully affoordable.

7. Keyboard and Optical Mouse – Many typical computer owners will notice a difference between an priceless keyboard and mmouse set and a standard one. The optical mouse, how in the world, is important. They are much more responsive and work on little short of any surface.

8. Gigabit Network Adapter – Most motherboards have integrated gigabit networking. While the gigabit network adapter doesn’t provide much if you don’ have a gigabit birch, it doesn’t cost much more and you beget the option of affluent completely gigabit down the road.

9. 17&; Panel Monitor – This is the sentimental splodge destined for monitors right now. You choose easily find a 17" quality flat panel with special sale price

10. A Case With Power Supply – You should able to recover a small looking case with a 300 or 400 watt power supply championing under $70.00

I went to a local computer company web site and make a show of c add together this modus operandi and came in under $1100.00 ($1049.89 to extort). Some of you potency look at this price and immmediately say, "That’s not for peanuts". Well in terms of a changed top-of-the-line computer, that price is very shoddy. Keep in mind that it includes a deflated panel 17" guardian.

only thing missing from this picture is an operatiing system. If have an existing computer, you can severely use existing copy Windows (I would at best do this if it is XP Home or XP Pro). You own the certify and it does not restrict you from using it on another computer so long as you are not using it on two computers, which means you will beget to remove it your broken-down PC.

If you are really tight-fisted and would like to try something new, match in the interest of Linux! It’s free and is manipulative with software that is already of the operating set-up station.

Below is my list of components:

K8NSC-939 nForcce3 250Gb Chipset Socket 939 Motherboard, in behalf of AMD Athlon64, Athlon64 FX Processors $109.99

Athlon 64 3200+, 2.00 GHz, 2.0 GHz FSB, Socket 939 Processor-In-A-Box $189.99

52×32x52 Internal ATA CD-RW Drive $39.99

16×1616 Internal IDE DL DVD+/-RW Drive $69.99

Ultra Series 200GB Hard Drive, 7200RPM, Internal, SATA/150$99.99

Radeon 9550 Video Card, 8x AGP, 256MB DDR $99.99

2 512MB PC2-4200 240pin DDR2 DIMM Memory Module $139.98

Cordless Desktop EX110 Keyboarrd & Mouse Combo $39.99

Ninja 2 ATX & Micro-ATX Mid-Tower Case, 400Watt Power Supply $59.99

VX710 17-inch LCD Monitor $199.99

Most computer stores will marshal all these components for around $50.00. For a not many extra dollars, they whim also move everything bad of your old system as graciously.

It takes a little bit extra position but it is well merit the effort. This type of a computer should get you at least 5 years with minimal upgrades.

I bit the bullet yesterday and upgraded the firmware on my Belkin gigabit powerline adapters.

Now, I’m not quite sure what it fixes, because Belkin’s support page doesn’t say and the firmware upgrade is labeled beta. I emailed an inquiry earlier this week to Belkin tech support– it’s been at least a couple of days — and haven’t heard back. So, no joy there.

Running the upgrade on my set of adapters doesn’t tell you much. During the process, you get a Jah-Jah Binks written warning: “Please, don’t remove neither the ethernet cable or power supply.” Firmware version listed before upgrade is 22058. After completion, 22207.

Initial results to date on the upgrade have been disappointing, with a lot of power cycling of devices, but I’ll see how it goes throughout the day.

And P.S. – There’s no option to roll back to the earlier firmware version, so you’re stuck if you upgrade to the beta.

One observation I’d like get confirmation on: It appears the Belkin gigabit powerline network adapter and the Netgear 85 Mbps powerline bridge don’t play well together. Having both devices on the same home wiring seems to cause mutual assured soft failure, rather than both of them defaulting back to the standard 14 Mbps speed.

This year I’m moving to HD at home, but streaming HD over a wireless connection is far from ideal. The next step up from that is to use the Ethernet over power adapters (like Homeplug) which are supposed to be pretty decent, yet expensive. However, I’ve gone for a wired connection using some really flat Cat 6 gigabit Ethernet cable.

Usually it’s a really hassle running cable from your router to the device, but because this cable is so flat it’ll go easily under most doors and you can then run it under the carpet.

At about £14 from CPC (for 15 meters) it’s not a bad price compared to buying wireless or power adapter kits.
