The camera is scheduled to begin its search this month with the Pan-Starrs-1 telescope in Haleakala, Hawaii Pan-Starrs will repeatedly scan the same portions of the sky to look for changes, such as the supernova discovered during the telescope’s test runs last fall. And if an asteroid is detected hurtling toward Earth Scientists and engineers are still working on ways to use spacecraft to alter its orbit 0 comments:

Solid surface countertops come in a wide range of solid and patterned colors. The most common solid colors include gray, beige, brown, red, pink and white. Patterns imitate natural stones, such as granite, marble, quartz, etc. There are also starred, leafed, dotted, mottled, scrolled and lots of other types of patterns as diverse as our tastes. Fortunately, solid surface countertops are available in nearly all colors imaginable.
Kitchen counters are also available in a variety of shapes. Apart from traditional rectangular counters, there are oval, circled, trapezoid, crescent-shaped, etc. countertops. You can either pick up a ready-made countertop or have one fabricated to your personal liking. Indeed, this is a great chance for you to obtain your much dreamed-of type of kitchen countertop. When ordering a custom counter, you can have it fitted to your kitchen size, plumbing and drainage system and kitchen interior.
Solid surface countertops are not very demanding in terms of maintenance. With due care, they last for decades without losing the slightest bit of their original beauty. They should not be exposed to heat, sharp temperature fluctuations and severe physical impact.

I am super excited to premiere the university’s first gigapixel image! We just got our GigaPan EPIC robotic camera mount and I had the opportunity to setup our first shot from atop Houchens-Smith Stadium looking north, up the Hill. The resolution is amazing! This image is a compilation of 160 photos into one large, 51,000×9800 pixel panorama. So take a peek around, zoom in and find the minute details in everyday life. We will produce more of these throughout the year and post them often.

TimeScience has partnered with the Borevitz Lab at the University of Chicago to create Gigavision, a

TimeScience has partnered with the Borevitz Lab at the University of Chicago to create Gigavision, a solar powered, ruggedized camera system that can record multi-billion pixel image timelapse panoramas.
See http://www.gigavision.org for more info and check back here for updates.

The Gigavision system will enable recording and analysis of decades-long time lapse images of the environment at a scale of billions of pixels. Gigapixel resolution time-lapse images make possible visual and numeric analysis of phenological and environmental change across a wide spatial range from the level of the individual to the ecosystem. Gigavision data can be embedded in geospatial visualization tools such as Google Earth and Google maps and used in interactive kiosk displays in National Parks and conservation areas. In addition to scientific applications, gigapixel time-lapse datasets can be used to create compelling video content to promote conservation and educate the public about climate change and other slow but significant environmental change. Giapixel image sets can also be integrated into online interactive educational products.

The Gigavision camera system uses a standard 12 megapixel SLR digital camera with a fixed 200mm lens, a computer controlled pan-tilt mechanism, a mini-computer or microcontroller, solid state data storage, a weatherproof housing and an off-grid power supply. Gigavision systems will be designed to work in rugged environments while streaming live data directly to the web via a cellular or standard 802.11 wireless connection. Optional components include a weather sensors and other abiotic sensor arrays.

Based on the Gigapan concept developed by Carnegie-Melon University the Gigavision recording system will work with our TimeSystem software. The TimeSystem software is an innovative data visualization system designed to facilitate easy analysis and management of time-lapse images and related data. With both a desktop and web-based interface, TimeSystem enables easy sharing of data, collaboration between researchers and promotes a wide range of uses for long-term data sets, from academic research to educational modules. The TimeSystem interface can be configured for use by multiple user groups from research scientists, to educators to conservation groups. Users of the TimeSystem software can easily generate high definition video of landscape change or any other interesting event for presentations, public outreach or conservation campaigns. The TimeSystem can also function in a kiosk installation to provide compelling interactive time-lapse content for National Parks and conservation areas.

Check out the link below for a higher quality version of the same picture and by zooming you can literally sneak into people’s living-rooms. Check out what it means when someone speaks about Gigapixel Photography! It’s fascinating, freaky and even a bit scary! Take care about what you do in front of your windows…

Found these photos online – this site has four different 1 GB photos. The photo of Vancouver (seen here) is the best – you can zoom in all the way to people’s windows. The negatives alone are 8″ x 10″.

From their site:

What is a gigapixel image

A gigapixel image is a digital image composed of more than one billion pixels. It contains more than 150 times the detail captured by a typical 6-megapixel consumer camera.
How does it work?

How are they created?

Gigapixel images are created by tiling a large number of photographs, or scanning a large film negative (8″ x 10″). Gigapixel images are displayed on-line using streaming technology which breaks the image into small tiles and loads them as you look. This allows you instantly view high-resolution images that are over several gigabytes in size.
