On November 1, Ginza Farm celebrated the rice harvest. The event began at 9 am on a Sunday morning and drew a crowd including children, parents, bloggers, an actress in an upcoming movie about farming, and the carpenter Hisano who built the beautiful tanbo, tables and benches. Above entrepreneur Iimura san helps the kids hang the rice along a bamboo rail.

Here’s what the rice looked like just before harvest.

After the jump are photos of the actress helping the children bundle the rice, two kids enjoying the remaining duck, and a sad note about how one duck died the previous week from an assault by a Ginza raccoon.

Blogging fail! D:
I kept telling myself to update this before I forgot everything…but then I didn’t. My bad.
Well a lot has happened since, so I’m going to have to break this up again. Here we go!

My friends and I had some business to take care of in Shinagawa, and then we decided to check out the Imperial Gardens. It was a bit of a crappy day, but at least it wasn’t raining. Sadly, a lot of the gardens had closed off areas so we probably didn’t see everything we could have seen. At least admission was free.

Old guard house

Tea House

Afterwards, we ended up in Ginza where I realized just how poor I really am. Or just how ridiculously high of a price other people will pay for things. I did, technically, buy something though! But it was only a couple of pairs of leggings from Uniqlo…which is sort of like Old Navy, so it doesn’t really count.

We had originally planned on going to Tokyo Tower but then by the time we had finished in Ginza, it was too late. We’re supposed to check it out tomorrow though, so hopefully it won’t take me forever to update with that.

Onto the next!

Ruled Notebook

The Japan Times published my op-ed article “Tokyo’s urban design role.” My argument is that Tokyo’s past urban design failures paradoxically make it a model for rebuilding existing cities and designing hundreds of emerging cities. In the context of climate change and global warming, livable cities can create a new balance between people and nature.

I talk about fireflies, Ginza rice and honeybees, modern bonsai, satoyama in the city, businesses and biodiversity, and how Japan can promote innovations in urban life, alongside achievements in popular culture and high technology.

Min gamla julstjärna i papper hade pajat. 70 cm i diameter, perfekt!

Haha

This is the sort of thing that could only happen in Ginza, the richest district in Tokyo. I was walk

This is the sort of thing that could only happen in Ginza, the richest district in Tokyo. I was walking with a friend after an evening of particularly rewarding window shopping on Thursday this week when we came across this huge pile of discarded flowers next to a phone booth smack in the middle of Tokyo’s fashionable Ginza district (where all the major fashion houses have their flagship stores in Japan, LV, Gucci, Bulgari, Hermes, etc). In Japan, whenever you open a new shop it is custom for business associates, well-wishers and people in the same industry to send you a stand of flowers to congratulate you. These flowers tend to be massive (by western standards) so you can imagine that in Ginza they are even more epic. Alas, you can only keep them for so long until you’re asked politely by the local council officers to clean up your patch of sidewalk (in Japan more shop owners actually own about a meter of the sidewalk in front of the shop as well).

The flowers were still beautiful and the whole street smelled wonderfully. One go-get-it kind of woman was already busily snatching the best ones and me and my friend was not to be outdone! Look what we found. All the way home on the trains people were staring, but I think the smell of freshly picked flowers in a packed train is much to prefer over those of the regular drunken businessmen. Don’t you? So next time you are in Ginza, take your time and do some exotic flower picking!

Tonight is my 2nd-last night in Japan. I’m not really sure what to say to this besides “

Tonight is my 2nd-last night in Japan. I’m not really sure what to say to this besides “wow.” Not “wow, already,” because the act of returning to Tokyo made it clear to me in advance that the trip was almost over. Also not “wow, finally,” because apart from the odd disappointing destination, things have been pretty good. Anyway, the last two days.

Yesterday I went to Akihabara Electric Town, aptly nicknamed nerdvana by someone I know online. In my last post, I said “I’m under budget, so maybe I can catch up by buying geeky things.” Akihabara had no problem supplying me with enough geeky things, but I restrained myself and didn’t buy some things I saw, for reasons of “I’ll never use/wear this.” If my PS2 could play NTSC-J games, believe me I would have bought the International versions of several Square Enix games. And God Hand. When I get back I’ll probably just buy the NTSC-U/C version.

Also in Akihabara, I found English instructions for the Gundam game I previously mentioned, Kidō Senshi Gundam: Senjō no Kizuna. I forked out some money and played a few rounds, it’s crazy fun 4v4 action in the original Gundam setting. Virtual On’s got nothing on this. I dominated my first couple newbie matches but once I got to players closer to my level I started losing hard. I seem to have always had the high score on my team though. How about that?

I never found any Mega Man figures, but I did get a Mega Man Zero 3 strategy guide, which is written with furigana, so I think I’ll try to translate it in my spare time, develop my language skills. I’ve always learned best by doing. The furigana is important, as trying to decipher kanji I’ve never seen before would be an exercise in inefficiency at best.

On the way back from Akihabara, I stopped at a noodle place within Suidōbashi station for dinner, it was yummy and as often I burned my tongue by trying to eat too fast.

Today I went to check out the Sony building. It wasn’t open when I arrived at Ginza station, so I wandered towards Hibiya Park and the Imperial Palace grounds. Since the Imperial Family resides there, very little of it was accessible to the public but what I saw was all very well kept and pretty. Across the street was a park full of fountains that put on various shows of water, it was nice to sit and watch the waterworks for a while.

Finally I made my way back to the Sony building after a brief arcade stop. It was basically a several floor showroom of Sony products, not really worth the time for me to go since I had no plans to bring a new TV, camera, or PSP back to Canada with me.

So, off to Tokyo Tower. At the base of the tower is a four level building with shops, restaurants, and entertainment. The tower itself has two observatories, both with different and interesting views. It was pretty busy though, and hyperactive kids abounded. Still good times.

For lunch/dinner I had pizza and for dessert, a cool waffle/ice cream combo. Check it out in the photos, it was delicious. I would have gotten another crepe (there was a crepe place nearby) but that waffle bowl just looked too good not to try.

Tomorrow’s my last sightseeing day. What to do?

Sleepy here.

Since starting these “Tokyo Impressions” entries I’ve come to the shocking realisation…there is no background to each location! I must apologise for this oversight, it must seem strange to read about our views on the different districts without actually giving any rough background information. So without further delay, I present to you “Ginza”.

Imperial Gardens/Business District

Ginza: A real mixture in this part of Tokyo; on one hand you have the Imperial Palance, across the road from that are the Government buildings and business parks and further in is Tokyo Tower. Within Ginza you will also find alot of shops that cater for the rich – Mercedes-Benz garage and clothing stores that don’t hang price labels – if you have to ask how much, you can’t afford it. This area then is a mix of old and new constructs and stark contrast of the Imperial monarchy, the ruling government buildings and high rise office blocks. It’s also an extremely expensive area of Tokyo in terms of price per square meter.

Tokyo Tower

Sleepy: Ahh Ginza, I enjoyed this area of Tokyo; plenty to see and do. It’s the perfect place to go if you want to do the tourist attraction stuff such as Tokyo Tower, Imperial Palace, Nissan show room and Sony building. But once you’ve been there, seen it, there isn’t a great deal to come back for. It was very glam, with a good mix of old and new buildings but the place lacked soul. You could argue the Tokyo Tower has soul and it does…but it’s just a tower that lights up at night. Tne Imperial garden was brilliant to look at but again, just seemed to lack that something that really draws you in. However if high rise buildings, gardens, expensive clothing shops are your thing, you’ll come back time and time again. For me, I don’t think I’ll go back to Japan just for Ginza.

Cheap & Tasty Food Stall

Otaku: Ginza is expensive. Cartier, Gucci, Chanel… that sort of expensive. Want to buy Real-Estate here? If you have to ask the price then you can’t afford to buy. However, Ginza is a window-shoppers delight! Its basically the same as any upmarket area of any city in any country so you can relax and enjoy the decadance of it all. Sundays are the best days to go, as large bits of Ginza get shut off to traffic and the little alleyways away from the glitz become more acessable. This is the beauty of Japan, no matter where you go and no matter how fat your wallet is, there is a place that the locals can call their own and for a few hundred yen you can get a delicious bowl of noodles! There really is something for everyone, the old Kabuki theatre is delightful, the (free!) Sony showcase building is amazing, and the food under the arches is very tasty.

Unless you are a ‘Player’ keep your wallet in your pocket because most every thing you can buy in a Ginza shop you could get cheaper somewhere else, however if you ARE a ‘Player’ you probably wont notice you are in Ginza at all.

For people who want a more traditional experience, especially shopping, staying at the station, or heading north is the best way to go. The Tokyu department store is located above and below Shibuya station. Heading north from Shibuya crossing will lead you to Seibu and Marui department stores. All of these shops provide a typical Japanese department store experience. You can find them in every major centre of Tokyo, and almost every major city in Japan. However, be sure to explore all of the side streets. I have visited Shibuya countless times and every corner, every back street, changes constantly. Many of the old shops have left the northern areas, in favour of more traditional fashion boutiques. However, if you walk around enough, you’re sure to find a lot of nice shops that even residents who have lived their whole lives have never even found.

Apple Store, Shibuya (Thanks to a friend for the picture)

If you are feeling more adventurous, or you just have too much time on your hands, the areas to the south and east provide a very different feel for Shibuya compared to the north and west areas. Directly to the east, people tend to associate it with Omotesando. To the north east, it’s more Harajuku. To the south, it feels more like Ebisu. Omotesando is an upscale area that is very akin to Ginza. The main difference is the affluence. While Ginza is for people to be seen, and you’ll see a large variety of classes, Omotesando tends to be one class only, rich. Harajuku was talked a lot by Gwen Stefani for its fashion and need to break away from the normal culture. The north east corner of Shibuya borders Harajuku, and hence has more in common with that style of fashion. It is also a location of an infamous park where homeless people tend to live, and rows of yakitori shops similar to the small shops in Shinjuku. Again, like in Shinjku, I would not recommend them as they tend to be a little expensive, and they may not be so friendly to foreigners. It’s better to go to Shinjuku. The south region will see things be more food oriented. Ebisu tends to have more food shops than anything. You can also see some interesting fashion outlets, but people tend not to shop here. There are more apartments than shops, but if you want to go for a nice walk, this area is a nice area.

109 often has various "dynamic" displays

All in all, Shibuya is a place to visit. It’s noisy, bustling 24 hours a day, and willing to show you new insights into Japan. Is it a true picture of Japan? No. Will you be amazed by the crazy lights, strange people, and wonderful shopping? Yes. Make sure you visit during the day and night. In the day, do your shopping in the north. At night, return to Centre Gai and take a stroll around the Love Hotel Hill. Don’t be surprised when you pass expensive cars with blacked out windows parked in front of a sex toy shop

As has become tradition on trips to Asia, I try to get away from the city for a little to hug trees.

As has become tradition on trips to Asia, I try to get away from the city for a little to hug trees. Lately, I’ve been mountain biking in Japan.

We somehow were, um, unable to locate the car keys which resulted in twice the mountain biking as originally intended! It meant another trip up that darned hill.

The morning’s sunrise in Makuhari.

There was a restaurant near the town we rode, which for some reason had antlers in the sink. I have no idea….

And which also has become tradition, a night of enjoying live Bluegrass music in Ginza’s Rocky Top. The night even included an unruly drunk that was booted out! I love country music.

You have to love any band that has a banjo, an accordion and can cover Japanese pop songs along with Jerry Jeff Walker and Dolly Parton.

I’m not at Narita Intl waiting to go back to the land of apple pie, Starbucks and Bed Bath and Beyond. This lounge is great and and I love free beer, but what’s up with the blue fish cake??

Us lucky Keio-ers are now experiencing Mita-sai, a campus holidayslashfestival, which breaks up the

Us lucky Keio-ers are now experiencing Mita-sai, a campus holidayslashfestival, which breaks up the term quite nicely if I say so m’self. Out of an array of activities on my to-do list, one was to visit the intimidating neighbourhood of Ginza. Famed for famous labels and its streets flooded with fashionistas, my more alternative Harajuku sense of personal style was somewhat at odds with every other nihonjin. But the beauty of being firstly amongst a group of friends, and secondly gaijin no matter which way you look about it, that desperate need to not stick out is futile, and is wonderfully freeing once you let go.

We left just as the sun was setting; and it does that pretty early on here. Even before the start of winter (and my god it’s gotten miserable – one news report said something like it was the coldest November day in 17 years…). I kinda like it though. Tht night owl in me, y’see. There’s something more magic about nighttime. Especially in Ginza where the roads stretching wide are lined with trees all a-glitter, and the street signs lined with fairy lights, and the behemoth designer buildings look like giant, bizarre snow globes – all glass and changing colours. Louis Vuitton was some kind of trippy, monogrammed rainbow; looking over at Chanel a super-sized Lily Allen peeps back over shades. On a side note, not liking the new Chanel ads at all. That said, freaking loved the RTW Spring 2010 show.

I dragged them all to this Okinawan food store/touristy place/general purveyor of crazy yet overpriced items, that I have fallen in love with. The ground floor (see that, Japan? Ground floor. Because it’s a floor at ground level!) is stocked with foods, some of which I imagine do not in fact originate from islands lying south of honshu…

You know you want to buy it. I mean, it’s crazy tasty and everything!

They eat some wierd things in Okinawa…

Speaking of, the basement level of the store provides for the alcoholics and music addicts alike: to the right there is a small aisle bursting with brightly coloured bottles of this-and-that, hidden under the stairs you can preview Okinawa-related albums via old style HMV-esque headphones + cd players. One is shaped like a pineapple. This clearly enchances the listening experience, biensur. Beside the music are, inevitabley, the books. Guides and so on. In the far left corner one can purchase a variety of tourist-y items including shisa (Okinawan lions that come in pairs at the entrance of temples, kind of like guardians), musical instruments, shirts…you get the picture.

Now, at first everything is normal. I’m listening to Ska meets Okinawa cover of J-pop songs (yeah) from a giant pineapple. Then I wander over to see what the guys are so infatuated about over by the booze…

"Habu" eh? Now what could that possibly be?

Well.

It was a dead snake.

A dead, super poisonous snake. In the booze.

WHAT.

I mean, when did somebody come up with the idea “oh let’s go put a whole dead snake in some alcohol” and who told them it sounded good? Oh it was so gross, though! I’m gonna have nightmares for weeks! Its eyes were totally white, and was coiled up with its mouth open in a slightly pissed (no pun intended) manner I imagine most snakes would be when they are about to be pickled in sake or somesuch. Mmm-mmm-mmm…

Moving (swiftly) on, the rest of Ginza was sparkly and gorgeous, although my camera died on our tour around, hence lake of photo love. I did manage to get some shots of the entrance to Ginza’s own Tokyu Hands (another huuuuge Japanese department/chain store. Sells a whole variety of things. Really.) called “Ginza Hands”. Of course, being Ginza, there was none of the bizzare/perchance “crass” items sold in Shibuya or Shinjuku’s Tokyu Hands. Oh nonono. And everything was mysteriously a tad more pricey too, funny that.

Anyway I managed to get my hands on this gorgeous wee camera: the instax mini 7S. It’s somewhat polaroid-y: photos emerge from the top of it right after you take a shot. So looking foward to using it!! Also purchased a smaller toy camera, which I actually had back home but is infinately cheaper to buy here (as is the film). There was other stuff to – I could not resist at the Okinawan place, so I will update in a bit properly on my purchases…
