Nu vi se pare ca cei doi seamana? Lupul din desenele animate cu Nu, pogodi! si solistul de la Gogol Bordello? Mi se pare ca acesta din urma e intruparea personajului negativ reprezentat de catre lupul din desenele sovietice: the gipsy punk, asa cum se si autocaracterizeaza trupa. Si uite cum, personajul negati e vedeta si cum stilul lui de viata e promovat in capitalism, la nivel global. Asta e diferenta intre capitalism si comunism, clar!

Gogol Bordello é uma banda nova-iorquina formada no ano de 1999, que fazem um estilo de música que pode ser chamado de punk-cigano. O grupo é composto por músicos de várias etnias. Os músicos da banda são da Ucrânia, Russia, China, Estados Unidos, Israel e Etiópia.

Ho sempre creduto che:

1) Se ti chiami Eugene nella vita può fare di tutto fuorché il rockettaro.

2) Mi avrebbe sempre fatto schifo sentire un artista cantare inglese con un marcato accento straniero. 

Ieri sera, dopo aver visto i Gogol Bordello suonare alla Roundhouse, mi sono dovuta ricredere su entrambi i punti. Se su disco non mi hanno mai entusiasmato, dal vivo questi profeti del Gipsy punk sono in grado di rovesciare un teatro e tutta la gente che ci sta dentro. Sul palco il leader Eugene Hütz, ukraino di nascita, è un fantastico pazzo con una missione: far ballare i fans finché non lo sbattono fuori. Dopotutto questa è la mentalità gitana, suonare e far casino finché hai fiato in gola, un’etica da cui attingono gran parte del loro sound ma c’è dell’altro, come il violino di Sergey Ryabtsev che fa delle cavalcate mozzafiato. Lui è un personaggio da guardare oltre che ascoltare, con la barba folta, sguardo assassino, suona, danza e canta come se avesse in corpo qualche demone. Poi c’è  l’armonica meravigliosa di Yuri Lemeshev che emerge spesso da tutto il resto. Suoni rock, punk, polka, folk e a volte la batteria ci infila pure qualche ritmo reggae. Guardare il pubblico ballare è divertente quasi quanto vedere i responsabili di tutto questo casino. Soprattutto per i miei amici maschietti, circondati dalle fans in reggiseno che danzano intorno sudaticce, emulando, insieme agli altri, il frontman dei Gogol. E’ infatti più facile vedere Amy Winehouse bere un succo vitaminico alle carote organiche che Eugene esibirsi con indosso una maglietta. Lui è quasi un sopravvissuto, dopo essere scappato da Kiev in seguito alla catastrofe di Chernobyl si era messo a girovagare per tutta Europa prima di stabilirsi a New York e fondare la band, subito diventata famosa nella scena underground. 

I Gogol sono rinomati per andare avanti a suonare per ore, come fossero a una festa zigana. Solo che ieri sera non avevano fatto i conti con il coprifuoco della Roundhouse… per un po’ i tecnici gli facevano segno di smettere ma loro nulla, continuavano, anzi, Eugene li prendeva letteralmente a calci in culo ogni volta che entravano in scena per sostituire gli assi dei microfono che continuava a spaccare o far cadere… E così sono dovuti saltare in mezzo al palco interrompendo un bellissimo assolo di armonica per fermarli. Accese le luci del teatro, spente quelle delle spie sul palco, riparte la musica registrata e il pubblico stremato se ne va? No, continua imperterrito a ballare…

Balkan Beat Box is a world music duo consisting of ex-Gogol Bordello member Ori Kaplan and Tamir Muskat of Firewater and Big Lazy. As a musical project they often cooperate with a host of other musicians both in the studio as well as on stage. Their current live crew consist of Tomer Yosef, Billy Levy, Ben Hendler, Itamar Ziegler, Dana Leung, Eyal Talmudi, Jeremiah Lockwood, and Peter Hess. Amongst their other collaborators are Victoria Hannah, the Bulgarian Chicks, Uri Kinrut, and gnawa player Hassan Ben Jaffar.

Fara numaaaaaar de la Gogol Bordello care zice ca Nu e crima

A few weeks back I was asked to go and see Gogol Bordello at Hammersmith Apollo in order to write a review for it. I am ashamed to admit it now but my first answer was ‘No, I don’t even know what that is’. Still everyone else was going down to All Tomorrow’s Parties and the more I have in my portfolio the better it looks so I ended up agreeing.

I called up my friend, Seun Mustapha (the same one that gave me free passes to CSS’ gig the week before) to come with me. I wanted it to repay him somehow. He told me his magazine was planning to interview the band, so despite the fact that he also didn’t know nothing about them he accepted to come. Before going to the gig I spent some time in YouTube trying to prepare myself to whatever it was I was about to see. Little did I know there was nothing that could prepare me for it. I arrived mid way through some uninteresting DJ set, but that’s just my opinion since everyone else in the room was definitely going for it. Me and my friend after scanning our nice seats in the balcony decided to go for some drinks until Gogol Bordello came on stage. We chatted crap and watched the very Eastern European crowd wondering what was about to happen.

When Gogol came on stage it was like something out of this world and to better give you a picture of it here’s the review I wrote:

Gogol Bordello @ Hammersmith Apollo 08.12.07

Gogol Bordello is gipsy punk, a big fat party and the most random fun you can have with music. They are an Eastern European band New York who‘s motto is inspired by Nikolai Gogol, a novelist, dramatist, and satirist who through his work brought Ukrainian culture to Europe. Their sound ranges from gipsy traditional music with anarchic punk, a touch of metal and a bit reggae thrown in. So if anyone out there suffers from ignorance of not knowing who I’m talking about, as I did until a couple of days ago, now is time to get out of the dark and get surfing the net or down your local music shop to find the anarchic Gogol Bordello sounds.

They had no need for funky light displays, or gimmicks, the music made it on its own accord. As soon as Eugene Hutz (the band’s lead singer) walked on stage the crowed roared, jumped, whistled and screamed in excitement. Me in my ignorant private corner looked dubious at the scene not sure what to expect. Then the music started – the accordion, the violin, electric guitars and the drums… My mind was completely blown away by their show. THE CRISPRY PUNK REVOLUTION written on stage was spot on for what I was about to experience. Bodies shacked and shook and twirled, hands clapped in time with the music… and this was just the crowed. Hutz was a contagious wave of energy; he danced with red high hills on for a while, and then went on to throw in a red wig for head banging effect. The band was just having a great time. The instrumental solos were out of this world, and these party could have been down anywhere in the world, the affect would still be the same. The engineer looked lost on stage as he trolled backwards and forwards to straighten wires, move objects out of the way, and be knocked over by a flying mic. If that doesn’t give you a clear picture of what it was like, let me add some last words that latter came into the stage backdrop ‘THINK LOCALLY – FUCK GLOBALLY’.
