I wish I had enough skill and enough time on my hands to make Bento for my dinner everyday.
Bento? You say.. Well. Bento is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento consists of rice, fish or meat, and one or more pickled or cooked vegetables, usually in a box-shaped container.

But I am more interested in the cute ones!
So. Kyaraben or charaben, a shortened form of character bento, is a style of elaborately arranged bento which features food decorated to look like people, characters from popular media, animals, and plants. Japanese homemakers often spend time devising their families meals including their boxed lunches.

GIR has become one of those very few yearly gigs which i look forward to, and this year’s edition has already left me wanting for more. Thanks to Mr. Amit Saigal for getting Enslaved, Satyricon and Sahg to perform for us. Respect.

Attending a gig with your ‘mind fvcked’ over personal issues takes away the really-looked-forward-to feel but nevertheless I started off from this place where I’ve forcefully put up myself in Bangalore to the mother of all venues – Palace Grounds. It brought back memories of Iron Maiden gigs but when I entered the venue the memories blacked out because I saw only close to 50 people around me as opposed to what I’ve seen at this venue. Maybe i was early or the gig wasn’t publicised well.

Anyways i saw some of the organisers smoking inside the venue whereas the bouncers hired by them were personally going to each one smoking inside and trying to be loyal (read violent). Even I was a victim but then it was fun.

The gig was supposed to begin at 5 pm but on 25th October exactly at 5 pm the drummer of the opening band – Parachute XVI is late. This was bound to happen?? They opened the gig with their blend of psychedelic rock which did please my ear. It was OK till the last track which was a 2-part song about media and it was long and boring enough to allow me do everything I usually do when Sceptre is playing live, by which i mean take a leak, smoke, drink, stroll, basically do everything to discourage the band. The dead-song ended and on came the same old – You are the best fvcking crowd ever – comment. Comeon. Not the best way to end their set.

I went around checking the stalls when the next band – Inner Sanctum was gearing up. After watching them at this year’s IRock XXIV, I wanted to see them again thanks to them sounding so metal. They came, they conquered – the stage, crowd, bitches, air, trees and everything in the vicinity. There was also some crazy moshing during their set with some damn-i-need-facial-hairschool kids ready to kill each other. The band had a monstrous presence and complete control over the crowd. Does playing at home help..? YES IT DOES. Tight band.

Everyone was recovering from the Inner Sanctum-syndrome and warming themselves for my favourite Indian band – Kryptos. I envied Nolan’s Celtic Frost tee but the moment they began it was all behind me. The set list included a mix of songs from both the albums with 1 new track – The Mask of Anubis. This track was new to me and i can safely say I am buying their 3rd album too. They ended with the crowd favourite – Descension.

By this time the best was over and the crowd had steadily increased from 50 to 400-500 maybe.

Now it was time for the last 2 international bands and so they obviously (wtf?!) need time to setup so I strolled around and picked up a copy of Inner Sanctum’s Ep Provenance. I could hear Motherjane playing ‘Chasing The Sun’ at the adjacent venue where Kingfisher October Fest was on.

Next up were Solstate from New Zealand and i didn’t like them. I couldn’t relate to what they played. They also did a NIN-cover and without much noise made an exit.

Benea Reach from Norway was the last band for the day and they were a big band i suppose, what with the band taking around 45 mins for the setup. Huh fvck ! They were tight and had everything in place. They did make an impact. I liked them. I do like progressive metalcoresometimes. But not always.

And thus the curtains were drawn. This year’s editon of Great Indian Metal came to an end. Yes it was Metal up everyone’s arse. I happened to interact with some so-called Bangalore metalheads and all seems to be well. Being from the Bombay scene it was a pleasant experience. And considering Bombay was not even a venue for GIR, i wouldn’t have wanted to be there.

So in the end, you get some, you lose some and you tag along.

clcik to enlarge

Thirteenth Edition of Great Indian Rock is here. Less controversial compared to the ‘Independence Rock XXIV, GIR XIII is showcasing some killer band line up from India and some not so killer International Bands. Although some fans still feel GIR XIII standards have dropped compared to last years Premiere headlining bands like Satyricon, Sahg and Freak Kicthen to relatively unknown (in India) Benea Reach, Intronaut and Solslate , my guess is that this one could be one hell of a show as the myspace page of all the three headlining bands sound awesome.

And just in case if you didn’t notice ,Bangalore leg of GIR XIII dates clash (25th Oct) with ‘The Great Indian October beer Fest‘ which also happens be at the same venue ‘Palace Grounds’. Chances are that next year Bangalore might get leftout from GIR just as how Mumbai was not considered for GIR this year (reason being the low turn out last year due date clash with Farhan Akthar’s Rock On Concert for Bihar).

Anyways.. here are the final dates (Picture source RSJ Forums)

Abhijeet Ahluwalia

Extreme metal is making waves in India today. Infernal Wrath have just released their groundbreaking album Inside Of Me, Bhayanak Maut’s new album only cemented their reputation as a hallowed extreme act, and Demonic Resurrection are all set to unleash Return To Darkness. As with any movement that becomes popular, scores of bands jump on the bandwagon, trying to make hay while the scene shines. But there are always a select few who stand apart, stubbornly refusing to be anyone but themselves. Like Delhi’s Undying Inc, for example.

Being themselves is something the band takes very seriously, but they needn’t worry. No one can be like them, because it is impossible to define their sound. An eclectic mix of death/thrash/progressive/math metal, songs like Manimal, Evilution and Breeding Gods defy conventional musical boundaries.

“People have called our music all sorts of stuff but I don’t want to define it,” explains bassist Ruben during a break from tracking their new album. “We talk about the elements that are there in the music – speed, groove, technique, aggression. Whatever comes out of that mix is for the people to figure out. There are so many different genres and sub-genres; Fuck that. Pick up a guitar and go with whatever sound comes out.

“You can’t take our songs and say this is 70s/90s metal. It’s timeless; it’s an amalgamation of everything we grew up listening to and we’re currently listening. It’s undying, hence the name Undying Inc!”

Guitarist Biswarup agrees: “Just call it heavy music yaar. It’s just heavy metal done differently. People make a big issue of which genre a band comes under but I don’t really get it, it’s just heavy music at the end of the day”

It is this very conscious abhorrence of genres, and the limited creative scope that accompanies words like ‘metalcore’ and ‘death metal’, that allows the band to create some of the smartest, yet undeniably brutal metal to ever decimate Indian ears. Meshuggah might be a possible reference point, but be warned – it is the loosest reference possible. Undying Inc’s songs are avant-garde metal at their best.

How else can you describe a song like Membraneous? If odd-time signatures were art, this would be the masterpiece. Vocalist Shashank’s hair-raising wail pervades through most of the song, in what is arguably the most throat shredding 5 minutes of metal to come out this year. All this is built on the rock-solid rhythm foundation of skinsman Yuvraj, whose acrobatics behind the drum kit will doubtless inspire a whole new generation of kids to discover the instrument.

“I have no clue where these riffs come from,” laughs Biswarup when I ask him. “I don’t really think about the structure of songs. I’ve studied classical music and music theory but when it comes to writing songs I don’t really think about the theory; I just let it go and stick with whatever comes out. The rhythm has to be there, the groove. If we like what we’re hearing then that’s fine.”

Nor is the band much in favour of subtlety, as song titles like Existence Failed show. “Our music is extremely brutal, aggressive and unmelodic, and that’s how we are as people – 4 fucking pissed off guys, pissed off at everything in life. Maybe urban life does that to you. The music you make reflects who you are,” explains Ruben.

“Our music makes you wanna kick someone in the face and say ‘I’m not gonna take this shit from you.’ Fuck you. The earth is gonna die, accept it. All this talk of saving the world and global warming is bullshit. We’re gonna die and nobody gives a shit.”

Angst is a metal cliché, but when backed by such precocious ability it is hard not to take Undying Inc seriously. Breeding Gods, the second track which will be featured on the new album, places the spotlight firmly the band’s incredible technique. From blast beats, to a high-pitched yawp that Shashank manages to hold perfectly for what seems like an eternity, this song pummels you into submission. Ruben’s bass guitar stands out in superlative fashion as he keeps pace with the typically atypical riff – an inherent dichotomy that defines Undying’s sound.

Such variety usually comes from a band that has eclectic music tastes, and Biswarup confirms the same: “Ruben listens to all kinds of music, especially grunge. Yuvraj listens to a lot of trance and world music. Shashank listens to a lot of music of all genres. For me, if I hear anything soft I don’t like it. The only common thing is that all of us are into metal.”

Just like with the music, there is not set formula to the song writing either. “There’s no process of how we write songs. Usually I come up with a riff and everyone adds their bit to the song as things go along. It’s a collective process. Our sound has evolved over the years. We used to sound like an old-school heavy band. Our ex-vocalist Amitabh was a big fan of the Floridian death metal scene. Now the structures have become a little more complex, less straight forward.”

Credit: Shailesh Johar

The band is currently busy recording their new, as yet untitled album. They tell me that they hope to have 12 songs to choose from, which might include an instrumental. The disc is slated for release in late December/early January. “We’re experimenting right now,” explains Ruben. “We’ve down-tuned an entire scale, I’ve moved on to a 6-string bass, the tones are completely different. As of now we’re keeping our options open and adding more stuff to the songs.”

This album, too, will be produced by Anupam Roy, who has already become something of a legend in the Indian metal scene – akin to Scott Burns and the impact he had on the nascent death metal scene in Florida. “We’ve been working with Anupam for quite a while now,” says Ruben. “Besides being a producer he’s a great friend of ours and knows us as people, which is really important for the band. If you don’t know your guys, you cannot pull the best out of them. Because he knows us well he gets us to work harder. And if we want to push the boundaries on something and we tell him ‘let’s do something more with this’, he’s always game for it.”

Undying Inc also has a fantastic slot on the GIR 2009 bill to look forward to, which is why it comes as a surprise to hear ‘yeah, whatever’ as the reply when I question Ruben about it. “It is like any other gig; you have to give it 100%. We won’t play much better just because it’s GIR,” explains an equally calm Biswarup. “It’s a big platform for us but I’m not in awe of it.”

And therein lies the crux of the matter. Undying Inc just don’t give a damn. They play what they want, whether you like it or not. They treat each gig equally, who cares how many people show up? Every track is meticulously pieced together, so what if it takes 2 weeks instead of 2 days? Evolution is important, but once you’ve hit upon a formula that works for you – why bother changing?

…Everyday you turn up to lectures that is. Well the end of the first week of lectures back at

…Everyday you turn up to lectures that is. Well the end of the first week of lectures back at uni and it’s been a good week mainly, of course this time around I’m not going to be bunking off lectures very often (if at all) this year because I don’t have another chance to screw things up after this one. The new modules are all pretty good, with two of them using a lot of Microsoft Excel; therefore it’s easier than taking candy for a quadruple amputee. However there are two that could be difficult, Environmental Engineering is some pretty heavy maths – some of which I shocking understood. The other is the re-sit from last year, the sneaky bastard of a lecturer changed the course layout and the types of assignment, so my previous work is now worth even less than it was – there is even a group Biology assignment, which could be tricky seeing as I don’t know any of the damned freshers in the class.

Well well, more controversy involving expense claims; this time it’s not on our shores but it is a familiar face. Former PM Tony Blair could return to mainstream politics as soon as next month, as European Union President after the Irish vote ‘yes’ in the latest Lisbon Treaty. Blair could now have a salary estimated to be around £275,000, plus another 15% of that as a monthly residency allowance and something called an ‘entertainment fund’ which really sounds dodgy – surely entertainment is a matter of opinion and therefore anything could be justified as entertainment. All of this has rather annoyed the Tories and it could open old rifts within the Tory Party over the issue of Europe, but Blair isn’t a member Labor so surely he’ll be a neutral figure as EUP, surely?

Sports time now, and the Phillies have clinched the NL East Division for the third consecutive time after their 10-3 over The Astros at Citizens Bank Park and are now in with a chance of defending the World Series title that they won last season. The next couple of games will determine whether or not they will have a home advantage or not during the post-season playoffs. I really wish I could get ESPN on my Freeview box so they I could see them win it again this year, I was able to watch the whole World Series last year because it was shown on Channel Five but then their directors must have had some major blood clots in the brain and they cancelled the showing of MLB games.

The 2016 Olympics has gone to Rio De Janeiro and therefore Brazil become the first South American country to host the games in it’s history. The IOC shot down the apparently save bet of Chicago first, much to the shock of the US public who were sure they were going to win the games again. The last two cities in the ‘draw’ were Rio and Madrid, the IOC probably chose Rio over Madrid because of the Britain’s hosting of the 2012 games – they have to share the games around the other continents, the same reason is believed to be why Tokyo too was turned down.

Anyway the big news of the last few days in my little world is that sheer awesomeness that is Invader Zim, an old cartoon with a big cult following. Most people that know of it have seen it many times over the years since it’s cancellation in 2001, but as always I’m behind the times of popular entertainment and have spent the last couple of days working my way through the episodes. I have to say that GIR has got to be my favorite cartoon character of all time, that crazy little robot is awesome! I was annoyed to find that it was only released on DVD in America but as long as I can find other ways to watch the episodes then I’m happy.

Gir is a lazy sleepy boy. For the most part. He’s been my companion for the last 2.5 years and my inspiration to go back to school. Gir has been the defining moment for I have do better than this to live, to not just survive.

He’s survived one terrible ex relationship of mine, he’s seen countless boys come and go ( he devolped a scare tactic with some) not to mention he’s dealt with living in a smallish townhouse with my brother and father. He’s a pretty stand up boy. Countary to popular belief he is not out of control when being walked, he is as obedient as a hound/hound cross can be, he has a decent recall, he gets along with small and large dogs not to mention he is not in any sense aggressive. In all of my life having dogs/growing up around dogs, Gir beats them for being the most bombproof. That’s not to say he doesn’t have his quirks ( umbrellas, the vacuum, tin foil) but overall his personality and demeanor are astounding. What’s even more is that I got him as 6 month old greyhound cross puppy.

Greyhounds are puppies until their two and half years old. They take that long to stop growing, to become “calmer” and to just be less land sharkish. Somehow I did something right, somehow Gir didn’t grow up into the cujo I thought he’d be thanks to many of my mistakes. He didn’t growl up to be a people aggressive dog, he didn’t grow up to be a dog aggressive dog, he turn out to be a wonderful dog.

A quick synopsis of the plot so far : A twenty two year old girl moves 450 kilometers away from her

A quick synopsis of the plot so far : A twenty two year old girl moves 450 kilometers away from her hometown, from friends she’s had for years, with her dog (Gir), her computers ( A mac “the useful one” and the “mentally challenged” Vista netbook/notebook hybrid), a nokia cell phone who refuses to die (seriously, it’s been rained on, snowed on, beaten on, smashed on pavement..), most of her music, a couple of sketchbooks complete with water colours and hope in her heart that somehow this will work its self out in the end. Along the way, she’s going to try to get into the local college, work towards getting her bachelor of arts ( finally) and hopefully not become too lonely or reculsive along the way.

A cast of characters:

Zed: Our somewhat anti hero, I’m the one who’s perspective will be writing from. I have two tattoos, a pair of moogle wings on my shoulder blades and poorly done outline of ravens on my chest. I like tea, books, music and teaching my dog new tricks. I can be sharp, I can be all angles at times, I can be rather terrible. I’m smarter than I seem, which some people don’t give me enough credit for.

Gir: My dog, he’s a greyhound cross ( most likely foxhound). I adopted him from the Humane Society in March of 2007 and haven’t looked back yet. Gir is incredibly smart, however like most hound types he tends to take a “what’s in it for me” approach with traditional obediance. He likes going for walks, going to the dog park, going to the river, green tripe, bully sticks, Orijen dog food and chicken necks. Currently Zed is considering a raw food diet for him.

B: His job didn’t allow him to move to Zed’s hometown so she moved to his hometown. He has a really awesome job, he’s quirky but more outspoken than Zed. He’s also a little older than her. He’s raced jet boats for the last 3 years, he normally does well in them. B is sort of a recovered computer geek, he still can make a game from scratch. He too is intensely into music, more so than Zed, he’s an audiophile.

Overall: It’s an interesting dynamic. It promises to be more interesting as it goes on.

Song of the moment: Mandelbrot Set Jonathan Coulton I cannot remember the last day I went without dr

Song of the moment: Mandelbrot Set Jonathan Coulton

I cannot remember the last day I went without drinking. It’s been at least a week. This is moderately terrifying, unless you take into account that I really only have about a beer’s worth of booze a night. I suppose I could be much more of an alcoholic.

I am also quite glad my dickish horoscope didn’t actually come true. It pisses me off just thinking about it:

Well, well, well — how long has this been going on? Could it be that while you weren’t looking, something kindled (or rekindled) between the two of you just when you least expected it? Isn’t that always the way it is with romance? Just when you thought it had gone for good, it always pops up again. Go ahead and see where this goes — it’s too good an opportunity to waste.

Anyway, I am not allowed to hang around the ROIAL girls en masse anymore. They are a terrifying gaggle of confusing virgins. Not that I have anything against virgins, but I do have something against the uptight, prudishness that a group of virgins seems to just radiate. Things that offend them are just funny to me. Mostly sexual. They don’t quite have the same mindset I do. Also, porn isn’t awesome to them the way it is to me, sadly. I need friends I can watch bad porn with, so we can laugh (good porn is reserved for my bedroom in the wee hours of the morning, naturally).

Maybe it’s not the whole “pack of virgins” bit, but some of the specific individuals involved (they are really the only tiny herd of them I deal with anymore). People who still believe in Disney romance and love at first sight and Prince Charming and stupid shit like that. People who think sex is magical instead of just messy and fun and exhausting. I can’t relate to these people. I’ve understood the truth of love and sex for too many damn years.

Stauff and I played a hilarious little game today. Castle Crashers. It’s cartoony, adorable, and just silly fun. I was playing briefly because I was bored, but then Stauff jumped in and it became awesome. It was a great way to procrastinate. And, for the record, I plan on playing this game until I find/unlock the little pet-critter that looks like a mutated GIR. Just because I can.

For the record: I don’t like parties. I never have. They are loud and crowded and more than likely contain people I don’t like/don’t care to associate with. Cheap beer, stupid drinking games, and bad music. I’m through the partying phase of my life. Really. When I drink, I want to drink in a small group of people. I want to be able to have a fucking conversation. I want to enjoy a good alcohol. So please, stop harassing me and trying to make me go to parties. I don’t want to. Respect that. When I ask you how it went, don’t lament that I wasn’t there. Tell me you had a good time, but stop trying to fucking make me feel guilty. All it does is serve to piss me off.

Oh, and I finished my paper, in case anyone cared. Go me.

Bonus link of the day: Today’s A Softer World made me laugh so hard I wanted to puke.

You: haha, bigger is not always better

You: certainly not here

Stranger: yeahh, but i’m gonna duct tape ‘em together and make a really big ol’ disciplinary device!

You: and that’s when i pull out my chainsaw… on a stick

Stranger: oh plz. your stick chainsaw is bush league.

Stranger: and very unnecessary for sammich making.

Stranger: i have yet to perfect my breadloaftree.

You: i didn’t say it was for the making of a sammich

Stranger: there’s no reason for silly saws of chain.

Stranger: i know, but you were thinkin’ it.

You: a breadloaftree? this is an intriguing concept

Stranger: isn’t it though?

Stranger: and you can’t be in on such a lucritive venture because of your unneeded and unappreciated anarchy.

Stranger: and cuz i say so.

You: that is terrible logic

You: it fills me with rage

Stranger: well lucky for me i am a pokemon master and know that your rage wont be released for another few turns.

You: besides, we haven’t even crossed the biggest hurdle: even if i made this ridiculous sammich, there’s no guarantee i’m anywhere near you to deliver it

Stranger: holy shit how did i decided you were a pokemon?

Stranger: this is bad.

Stranger: i’ve lost me.

You: and frankly, i’m not traveling to you if it means enslavement and being trapped in a pokeball

You: meh

Stranger: but back on track!

Stranger: you WIILL and ARE near me, on muh belt.

Stranger: next to Alakazam.

You: i am not on your belt

You: you haven’t caught me yet

You: i am still wild

You: and roaming free

Stranger: but i won the goddam quick draw!

You: dammit

You: you did at that

You: but i saw no pokeball then

You: therefore, not captured

Stranger: y’know what was annoying as hell? going to the pokemon safari.

Stranger: i’m so glad i got you on omegle.

You: haha, i’m actually glad i got you, too

You: you remind me of a friend of mine

You: and of gir, from invader zim

Stranger: ohhhrly?

You: mostly gir

Stranger: ahahaha

Stranger: i need to find my trogdor courier bag with my gir patch on it..

You: that sounds like a thing of strange beauty there

You: wait…

You: shit

You: i’m wearing a gir shirt right now

Stranger: oh my lawd ’tis indeed.

Stranger: …

You: *bangs head against wall*

You: i’m such a nerd

Stranger: glory in shirt form!

Stranger: and yes.

You: haha

You: ’tis glorious

You: he’s… oh shit

You: no way

You: no goddamn way

Stranger: eating a sammich!!!

You: you want to know what it says?

You: “make me a sammich”

Stranger: apowreigsdfjcxv

Stranger: YES.

You: that is the most ridiculous thing i’ve ever… wow

You: i’m impressed

Stranger: the most epic win i’ve ever had on the internet in my lifetime.

Stranger: or anyone’s lifetime.

You: haha

You: you’ve seen many lifetimes

Stranger: indeed i have.

Stranger: but most don’t have gir in them.

You: those are sad lifetimes. bleak. meaningless. a little like reading too much camus or sartre

Stranger: oh my gosh i had to read a little camus for a world lit class last year

Stranger: actually a lot

Stranger: a whole book, actually.

You: i had to read “myth of sisyphus” during finals week. talk about bad timing.

Stranger: he’s a great writer, but existentialism is so give-upXcore

You: i think he’s a so-so writer, and i don’t mind the tenants of existentialism. actually, i suppose if i were to subscribe to a philosophical school of thought, that’d be it

Stranger: i just can’t buy in to the whole accidental drive that it wants to put on to the universe

Stranger: despite how liberating the stranger did make it seem

You: i look at it in a more positive light. i am the only one who can create meaning in my life. i find something beautiful in that

Stranger: oh, well no doubt you can look at it in a more positive way than camus did

You: also, i don’t believe in any higher force or anything ordering the universe, so… *shrugs*

You: haha

Stranger: well i didnt think so

You: i think a squirrel could be more optimistic than camus

Stranger: ahahaha

Stranger: i saw one carry half a bagel up a tree yesterday

Stranger: that was hilarious.

You: that would have to be as big as the squirrel! that’s awesome

You: he’ll eat like a king for a week

You: the other squirrels will worship him

You: for his gathering skills

Stranger: or maybe he’s a nice squirrel and will make little sammiches for all his friends in a day.

You: and bring him gifts of peanuts and shiny buttons

You: nonsense

Stranger: I LOVE BUTTONS.

You: squirrels are selfish creatures

Stranger: actually, snaps are more fun.

You: snaps are fun in the same way clicky pens are fun- i play with them when i’m bored in class or meetings until they irritate someone

Stranger: clicky pens make for awesome office-supply ranged weapons

You: give me two binder clips, a large rubber band, and a clicky pen, and i can make a sweet projectile launcher

You: i mean

You: i have never, ever done that

You: ever

You: *cough*

Stranger: pfff.

Stranger: you lil’ schoolyard anarchist, you.

You: what can i say

You: i was a rebel

Stranger: i bet you could make a damn good sammich then.

Stranger: you should show meh!

You: i make a mean sammich

You: a mean, toasted turkey and ham delight

You: it’s like a party in your mouth

You: but you’ll never know such joys

Stranger: ….

You: because i refuse to be your pokeslave

Stranger: i don’t think you understand what contract you’ve entered into by being terrible at drawing quickly.

Connection asploded.

Isn’t it awesome that the lost connection thing fit with the ZIM conversation? I thought that was sweet.

Pero su calidad y creatividad son toda una inspiración.
