It looks like a pretty unexceptional watch, does it not? Except that the Tudor brand is Rolex’s more modest sister. Tudor was introduced by Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf in 1946. The most important difference between Rolex and Tudor is that the Tudors do not have a Rolex manufactured movement, but a rather a modified ETA mechanism.

This is as close to owning a Rollie as I will ever get.

Fun Watch Facts:
1. Few watch companies make their own movements. the list of manufactures includes Rolex, Glashutte Original, Audemars Piguet, Girard-Perregaux and Chopard. This kind of information probably only matters to crazy watch people and to people who are trying to justify spending too much money on a watch.

2. Many watch companies have less expensive lines. Bulova has Caravelle, Hamilton had Vantage, Benrus had Belforte. Secondary lines were mostly introduced to battle bargain brands like Timex. They frequently had non-Swiss movements to keep costs down.

‘The history of this prestigious Swiss manufacturer can be traced back to Jean-Francois Bautte, the famous Geneva watchmaker. Though orphaned at a very young age, the young man confronted life with determination. In 1791, by the time he was nineteen, Jean-Francois Bautte had learnt several trades, acquired the education which his modest background had denied him and begun making his first watches. It would not be long before his name became familiar to the royal courts of Europe. A master watchmaker of rare talent, Jean-Francois Bautte was also an astute “industrialist” and businessman with a brilliant, imaginative and generous character. He is credited with creating the first genuine ultra-thin watches and the truly visionary concept of the Manufactory as a producer of high-quality timepieces.

Unfortunately, Jean-Francois Bautte did not have a successor or heir to take over his company when he retired. The problem of what to do with the company was quickly solved when a merger was arranged with another watch manufacturer. In 1854, Constantin Girard married Marie Perregaux. As both came from watchmaking backgrounds, it seemed perfectly natural to use both names when they formed their own company. So it was that the Girard-Perregaux brand was born, in 1856.

More than just a famous watchmaker, Constantin Girard was also a patriot committed to the republican cause and always ready to devote time and energy to his beloved town of La Chaux-de-Fonds. Only a few years were needed to establish a reputation that spread as far as the New World. His technical and aesthetic masterpiece, the “Tourbillon Sous Trois Ponts d”Or” (translation: Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges), was unquestionably the greatest achievement of a life largely devoted to the research and development of the art of watchmaking. This amazing pocket watch won Girard-Perregaux two gold medals at the Paris Universal Exhibitions in 1867 and 1889, and is considered one of the most desirable mechanical watches ever made.

The tradition of innovation initiated by Jean Francois Bautte has been perpetuated to the present day by Girard-Perregaux. Throughout its long history, the Manufactory has made a number of exciting and innovative contributions to the world of watchmaking. Foremost among these is the concept of the wristwatch. Although a few pocket watches had already been modified to be worn on the wrist, Girard-Perregaux was the first watchmaker to produce this kind of timepiece in a series (around 1880).

In addition, Girard-Perregaux has developed several revolutionary movements, the most notable of which have been the Gyromatic, the high-frequency mechanical movement that has become collectible in its own right, as well as the quartz movement, whose frequency of 32,768 Hertz has become the universally accepted standard. In fact, it was Girard-Perregaux’’s innovations in the realm of quartz timekeeping that allowed it to survive the Swiss watch industry’’s economic crisis during the 1970s and 1980s.

Although Girard-Perregaux did not thrive during the 1970s and early 1980s, unlike other Swiss watch companies, Girard-Perregaux not only survived fully intact, but emerged even stronger than before and fiercely determined to continue producing high-quality mechanical timepieces using in-house movements.

At a time when many prestigious Swiss companies were looking to outside suppliers for their raw movements, Girard-Perregaux simply would not compromise quality to improve the bottom line. The company’’s massive efforts to upgrade their factory, while training a new generation of master watchmakers to produce the highest quality wristwatches, was clearly a gamble — but one which paid off handsomely when consumers re-discovered the pleasures of wearing traditionally hand-finished mechanical timepieces.

Girard-Perregaux’’s master watchmakers continued their efforts in the early 1980s. After extensively studying an original model acquired at auction, the watchmakers revived the expertise which had originally created the Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges pocket watch. To make a replica of this marvel, however, they had to think in modern terms and re-design all the components. Although computers would prove helpful in the design phase, the watchmakers nonetheless had to re-learn all the traditional crafts and skills that had died along with the masters.

In 1991, on the occasion of its 200th anniversary, the company achieved the amazing feat of adapting the technology of the Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges to a wristwatch version. Several variations have been produced since then. These watches, which are completely handmade in Girard-Perregaux’’s workshops, are amazing works of mechanical art. And the Three Bridges, which are cast in solid gold, are stunningly beautiful to behold.

Some six to eight months of continuous work are needed to produce such a watch, with the House’’s most talented senior watchmakers meticulously crafting each component by hand, assembling the movement, testing the complicated mechanism and finally casing up the completed movement in a massive gold or platinum case. As of this writing, only 20 such Tourbillon wristwatches have been produced to date.

Needless to say, watch lovers around the world quickly took notice of the company’’s amazing comeback, and the company capitalized even further on its newfound success by obsessively dedicating itself to the production of wristwatches of the highest quality at extremely competitive prices. Moreover, in 1993, Girard-Perregaux signed a co-branding arrangement with the celebrated Italian car manufacturer, Ferrari, which has yielded a remarkable line of sporty chronographs.

Along with the Ferrari chronographs, the company’’s other popular models include the Vintage Men’’s automatic, which features an in-house Girard-Perregaux 3000 self-winding calibre.

Look what I found in a box full of old Timexes yesterday — A 1970s-era Girard-Perregaux Chronometer HF Gyromatic.

For you non-watchy folks, this a big find. It’s what some would call a “grail watch.” Not because GPs are super luxury watches or because its even particularly rare. It horological interest lays in its 39 jewel, high-frequency movement (36,000 vibrations/hour), automatic movement. I love mechanical watches simply because they are little machines.

Girard-Perregaux has a wealth of expensive watches showcased within their wrist watch gallery. Their range consists of beautifully seductive master craftsmanship, at a price. The prices of the eBay listings for a few of their products range from $2,600 to $4,000. Expensive.

As a way of commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Colorado Grand (a 1000-mile American rally which unites 75 race and sporting automobiles built prior to 1961), Girard Perregaux introduced a limited edition chronograph which was produced in series of 50 pieces available exclusively in the United States.

I landed on the Discovery channel the other night and watched a rare look inside the MV Augusta factory, where they built the F4-312. 

You may recall Harley-Davidson acquired MV Augusta last year for $108M which was previously blogged HERE.

At any rate, I’ve watched the ‘Twist The Throttle‘ documentary series in the past, but MV Augusta was one story I had not viewed on the world’s most famous sport motorcycling brand.  The series reviews various brands (Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Ducati, Bimota, BMW and Alpinestars) histories, what happens behind the scenes at their factories, inside their research and development centers and ultimately what it’s like to ride the machines on some of the great motorcycle roads and race tracks around the world.  The series is available on the Discovery Turbo website.

For example I learned it takes 11 hours to build the F4 engine and 4.5 hours to build just one motorcycle.  It was also interesting to hear several of the on camera interviews evangelized the lack of any hard-core time-based manufacturing processes… huh?  Isn’t MV a motorcycle manufacture?  Watching the story you couldn’t help but think a bottle of red wine followed each motorcycle down the assembly line like a cocktail soiree and when it’s done, it’s done.  No rush…we’re artists!  Wow, the Italian build process seemed opposite and very casual compared to the Milwaukee plant tour I attended last year.

DADS Simulation

In fact, Harley-Davidson uses advanced engineering and simulation tools to compress design cycles as well as other tools to reduce the overall manufacturing process time.  For example the application DADS from CADSI (now part of LMS of Coralville, IA) is used for full 3-D prototyping and to simulate the handling of the motorcycle during a lane change, j-turn or weave maneuvers.   For a company that produces 12 different parts made of 4615 material with complex profiles of 20-42 teeth and robots measuring parts baskets with door-to-door cycle time of 11.3 seconds and overall grind times of 56 seconds…I find it astonishing that MV Augusta/H-D exec’s would go on camera pontificating the merits of the aristocratic craftsmen — “no motorcycle before it’s time” philosophy.

Is it time to exchange the Girard-Perreguax watch for a Timex and bring on the accountant dawgs to rehabilitate the long lunch wine drinking staff?

According to the World Watch Report an annual market study prepared by IC-Agency that focuses on the top 5 luxury watch companies, the twelve most luxury brands are (in alphabetical order): Breitling, Bulgari, Cartier, Chopard, Ebel, Girard-Perregaux, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Longines, Omega, Patek Philippe, Rolex and Tag Heuer.

In relation to this market study, the two most searched models are the Omega’s Seamaster and the Rolex’s Datejust.

The Omega Seamaster wristwatch is water proof to 120 meters, it is used for all types of sports activities. The Seamaster line combines advanced technology with exclusive precious materials like: tantalum, titanium or pink gold – available with mechanical or quartz movements.

Rolex’s Datejust, on the other hand, was introduced in 1942 with two additions: a sweep seconds hand and a date disc visible though and aperture in the dial at 3. The first Datejust was a seminal one, a model and a design that would last for the next 50 years. This model is still the most beautiful of the Datejusts.

As for eBay, between the most searched watches, we can find the Mint Vacheron Constantin, the Moser IWC Chronograph Repeater Antique, the Jaeger LeCoultre Memovox Alarm, The Vintage Rolex Double Red Sea Dweller, the Vintage TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph or the Omega Big Blue Diver.

Even though search volume for counterfeits products is a constant, for the first time I the last five years, since 2008 it started decreasing. “Demand for counterfeit products evolves as markets mature on the Internet. As Internet penetration rises, so does the share of searches relating to pre-purchasing activities for authentic roducts,” explains Flavio Quaranta, Associate Partner at IC-Agency.

Ieri s-a încheiat ediţia de anul acesta a Salon Internation de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) şi aş dori să prezint câteva modele care au fost prezentate de marii producători. Noutăţile sunt foarte multe, dar le voi prezenta pe cele mai deosebite şi remarcabile.

Voi începe cu producătorul meu preferat, Jaeger-LeCoultre. În colecţia de anul acesta se numără 2 modele deosebite: Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon à Quantième Perpétuel, un mecanism cu tourbillon si calendar perpetuu şi Master Grande Tradition à Répétition Minutes, primul ceas din lume cu repetor de minute (o complicaţie deosebită care bate ora) şi cadran de regulator (am vorbit despre acest aranjament mai special într-un post trecut).

Montblanc anunţă noul Grand Tourbillon Heures Mystérieuses. Scopul fuseé-ului este de egaliza cuplul primit de la arc şi astfel se atinge o precizie superioară. În exterior ceasul este simplu şi elegant, cu un cadran cu emailat cu 3 sectoare.

Yesterday, Team Ace visited the 19th Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva, Switzerland. Hereby we want to present the snap shots we took of the brand IWC.

FYI: The next SIHH will again be in January.

Ace Jewelers Group was at the SIHH to review at the brands that are in the portfolio of Richemont and the independent brands: Audemars Piguet, Girard Perregaux, Jean Richard, Parmigiani, Roger Dubuis.

IWC AQUATIMER
IWC  will focus this year on the Aquatimer Family. This means that they are restyling the complete collection and will stop the production of the current collection. The first thing all Cousteau fans want to know: Will there be a fifth Cousteau Limited Edition? The anwser is no! But, do not fear, they have launched a successor to the Deep One… The Deep Two:

Another amazing new patented technology created and developed by IWC, specially designed for divers:

There will not be any titanium versions anymore, but the black & yellow version is still available:

IWC INGENIEUR
The complete Ingenieur colletcion has been cancelled, besides the Big Ingenieur! They added two new versions: a 46mm version with the 8000-calibre and a chronograph. On top of that they have developped a new rubber strap.

IWC DA VINCI
In 1985 the legandary Kurt Klaus developpend for IWC the infamous Perpetual Calendar with Chronograph. Last year IWC tributed Kurt Klaus and designed a limited edtition watch in his name. They all sold out rapidly. Good news for those who did not manage to get hold of one. Ace Jewelers ordered the RED gold (5N) version with black dial (1000 pieces). On top of that IWC developed a new and patented movement: This first ever DIGITAL perpetual calendar!

The first ever digital perpetual calendar movement has four digits to display date, month and year in leap-year-cycle:

This magnificent watch will be produced in a rose gold and a limited edition version in platinum:

IWC PILOT
This is the fourth year that IWC is paying tribute to the legendary St. Ex. Therefore there will be another series of limited edition watches. This year the St. Ex will be a Big Pilot… Another Big hit:

Ace Jewelers will receive several version in stainless steel (22 pieces reserved for Holland) and rose gold (11 reserved for Holland). It is unclear if a white gold version will come to The Netherlands:

IWC PORTUGUESE
It is also the fourth year that IWC supports the Laureus Foundation by creating a limited edition watch. This year the Portuguese Automatic will be blue:

HAMPTON CLASSIC
This year Baume & Mercier restyled the complete Hampton Classic collection. This means that the other Hampton collections are unchanged. We hope to present the new Hampton Classic collection end of May 2009.

The new ladies version with a completely restyles bracelet is very elegant and sleek:

HAMPTON SQUARE
The unique square collection of the Hampton Collection has been inroduced two years ago. This year Baume & Mercier introduced two interesting Magnum version, the men’s version looks realy though and cool (EUR 3.600,– expected June 2009):

RIVIERA
Team Ace’s favorite launch in Baume & Mercier’s collection is the Riviera Magnum Black Chronograph. This watch will most probably be presented at Ace & Spyer mid-summer 2009 and will only cost: EUR 5.500,–

CLASSIMA EXECUTIVES
Last year Baume & Mercier introduced a steel bracelet for the timeless Classima Executives. This elegant bracelet was solely available for the Automatic Chronographs. During the SIHH 2009, B&M introduced a steel bracelet for the complete Classima Executives collection:

LIMITED EDITIONS: WILLIAM BAUME
Last year Baume & Mercier introduced an unique collection of limited edition watches as a tribute of one of the founding fathers of the brand: William Baume. This year they designed for different watches with various movements. Although, they also present a tourbillon movement, our favourite was the ‘Monopoussoir’ with a Lajoux-Perret 5000-calibre. Unfortunately this series is produced in 20 pieces and each item will most probably cost: EUR 23.000,–
