So after work (yep, I’m a copy producer for a fashion brand by day, fashion blogger/street style photographer by night) I thought I’d go snap a few style pictures at Lincoln Center outside of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. I didn’t expect to get much because of the time, and I was right. Found a few good treasures though, like the woman above. Draw your attention to her collar and bow tie. Delightful, isn’t it?

My husband’s hair didn’t need that much bleach, so I put a dab on my bangs. I went from a level 3/4 to a level 9 in about 2.5 hours using Wellite bleach mixed with 30 volume developer. In the future I’d like to use 40 volume and reapply the bleach a few times.

It was still a little yellow and gold – blah. So I toned it with Wella’s White Lady T10 toner for 50 minutes. Just the liquid, no other developer or anything.

This wasn’t something I’d do in the future. I have stubborn hair that is not very porous – I’d need to bleach at least two times to get to a lighter level since bleach has a very short half-life. And I’d rather use an oil based lightener, too. But it’s still cool to see that I can lift my hair so many levels.

Don’t have a lot of time to do your tender’s hair?? Then Ponytails are the way to go. A

Don’t have a lot of time to do your tender’s hair?? Then Ponytails are the way to go. A single ponytail can take you less than 4 minutes to do and all you need is a brush, a wide tooth comb, an elastic band and your fav hair pomade (& a rat tail comb for separation parts if you want to do multiple ponytails).

When it comes to cute youthful ponytails placement is key. My eldest daughter loves a single ponytail near the front of her head to the side. My youngest daughter loves and looks so cute with two ponytails on each side of her head. Remember, each child is different and hair lengths very. What looks good on one child with short hair may not look good on another child with longer hair. So explore and be creative.

Listen to your tender and let them have an opinion on how they would like their hair to look. Hair is an extension of one’s personality and nowadays a lot of schools require our children to wear uniforms. This may be the only way to let you child express their individual personality at school. Also, asking your child will give them a sense of involvement as well as an opportunity to use their imagination AND they get to brag about the new hairstyle they created! They’ll love it because they had a say on how their hair looks AND their hair will be done & that’s the most important part!!

HOW TO CREATE A PONYTAIL:

1. Brush and/or comb your tender hair to remove all tangles (you may need to use a detangler)

2. Rub a dime sized amount of hair pomade in the palms of your hands then smooth it over the hair while holding and positioning the hair on the spot of the head you would like the ponytail to be.

3. Place the elastic band around the wrist of your right hand if your right handed, if your left handed place the band on the left wrist. Then brush the hair into your free hand, letting the tail hang loose. Collect all the hair you want to include into your hand.

4. Set the brush down, then tighten the grip on the gathered hair. Transfer the ponytail into your lead hand.

5. Hook the elastic band with your free index finger and stretch it down. Pull your ponytail through the band, keeping a soft grip.

6. Keep the elastic band tense as you insert your other fingers and thumb into the band and twist it around the base of the ponytail then create a wide circle.

7. Grab your ponytail and pull it through the elastic band. Repeat steps 5 – 7 until the rubber band fits snuggly around the hair but not too tight!!

8. Braid, curl, twist or leave the ends loose, its up to you and your tenderhead

So lets see what you got!!!

Here is your chance to share your ponytail pictures with other moms!!!

Email me your pics to be posted on the next Tenderhead’s Ponytail update @ TenderheadsWordpress@gmail.com

For nearly twenty years, I practiced law in the state and federal courts of California, representing some of the largest, most conservative corporations in the world before judges and juries not-quite-of-their-peers. My coif was of-the-order, even if I was not Order of the Coif.

My last full-on hair cut was on 22 December 2004, a week before I retired. Since then, I’ve had the ends trimmed a couple times; but essentially, I have hippie-hair. Or girl-hair, if you will.

Most people agree: it’s not a great look for me. My mother laments, “You used to be such a cute kid!” But the long hair is, in some ironically conventional way, a nod to quirkiness. It also serves-up a somewhat light-hearted decoy –- and somewhat belligerent challenge –- for the world to underestimate me, a dynamic I have always tactically relished.

Last month, while I was in the Bay Area, I stopped on Berkeley’s Telegraph Avenue for an hour to up the ante.

I sought-out a guy named Twig, who works the corner of Telegraph and Durant “toward the end of the week,” selling his beads and bead-jewelry and wrapping hair. I had seen his handiwork in the long, silky tress of my friend Loveleen Dhillon and thought I ought to give it a try.

For the uninitiated, hair wrapping involves binding a lock within a weave of yarn or fabric. Himba women, in Namibia, use leather wraps. This article, which explains the how-tos of hair wrapping, breathlessly reports: “If you have a tween daughter, you know that hair wraps are, like, sooo popular right now!”

Well, like, count me in!

Detail of my new hair wrap. (Click for larger image.)

Finding Twig on Telegraph Avenue isn’t a problem, assuming he’s actually working that day. He is one of the deans of this famous street scene; everyone knows him and can point you in the right direction. He is a grizzled old veteran of the Sixties, not some hippie-come-lately. “I had always been into macramé,” says Twig. “Then, one day I was in the parking lot of a [Grateful] Dead show and someone showed me how to do hair wrapping, and I was really good at it. I’ve never had difficulty making a living since then.”

Twig invites me to select four colors from a large bag of dyed cotton yarns. He refuses to involve himself, explaining that color selection is not only a matter of individual aesthetics and self-expression, but that “the process of choosing is about taking personal responsibility.” I haven’t paid close-enough attention to the instructions and choose five colors: navy blue, pastel blue, deep red, pink, and yellow. I am about to jettison the light blue, but Twig sees a pleasing balance in the mix and says that he’ll work with all five.

“You also get a bead,” he instructs. So I select a small ceramic bead, which Twig pronounces “a very tasteful choice.”

It’s hard to say exactly how long the process of wrapping takes. Twig stops from time to time to help people browsing his jewelry. At one point, he abandons my wrap when he hears opening riff of “Mind Games” on his radio, and goes over to turn-up the volume. He pauses to listen for a bit before resuming his work. It’s no problem as far as I am concerned. I would never go to a hair wrap artist who didn’t love John Lennon. Or Hannah Montana.

It’s not just your hair characteristics that determine how well your hair will behave. Outside influences, such as the weather, can have a big impact with regards to your hair style lasting the day in humid conditions, or the wind causing your hair do to fall flat.

To ensure that your hairstyle will outlast anything Mother Nature can throw at it, and that your locks are protected against hair damage, give these hair care tips for every season a try.

Choose a Weather Proof Hairstyle

Choosing a hairstyle that survives your weather will help to keep your strands in tip-top condition and ensure that your style stays in place and you look good.

Plaits are great for protecting your hair from environmental damage as they keep the ends of your hair tucked in and away from the heat of the sun, cold temperatures and wind. They also create a pretty, romantic look which is great for spring or summer.

A ponytail is ideal for keeping hair frizz under control when winter weather wants to wreak havoc with your locks.

A bun is an essential hairstyle for all seasons and gives you a professional look in the office too. It will protect most of your hair, especially the more damage prone ends. For the best protection, tie your hair into a ponytail and then tuck your ends up into the bun and then spritz your locks with a UV protector. A UV protector should be used all year round regardless of the season as UV rays can still get through clouds and rain. If a bun becomes your regular style just remember to try a range of different positions (the back of your head, the top of your head, side-styled etc) so you’re not always tying your hair up in the same spot and weakening your strands.

Hot Summer days spent at the beach are just made for scrunched natural waves and casual top knot updos.

Get Some Help from Your Hair Styling Products
