Since we’re talking about London, I thought it would be appropriate to bring up the London-based 70s funk/reggae/calypso/soul/rock band Cymande (pronounced Sah-mahn-day).  My homie, Patrick, sent me the  link to this Cymande mixtape from Breath of Life earlier today, and I just had to share.   If you’re not already familiar, this is the perfect introduction.  If you’re already a fan, this is the perfect mixtape.  BOL’s write up on the band is pretty nice, so I’ll just let you read about Cymande there (you should definitely read up on this band).  While you’re there, make sure you look around and tap into the wealth of knowledge and buttery mixtapes that they have to offer too.

I first fell in love with Cymande after watching Girl Skateboards‘ Mouse, back when I was just a little man.  I have very fond memories of me and my homies watching the video (in VHS format, of course) multiple times a day, before and after skating.  I would venture to say that it’s one of Spike Jonez’ best films, but I’m biased.  Anyway, it was through this video and other amazing skate videos and their soundtracks that I actually started developing a broader taste in music (you know, not just hip hop and punk rock).  In fact, the soundtrack for Mouse is permanently programmed in my brain.  I can pretty much just replay it in my head at will.  Peep the video (a la youtube), with sound track credits and everything, for yourself.

Dang, it’s crazy to think that this video came out 13 years ago.  Props to Rick Howard, Mike Carroll, Eric Koston, Jeron Wilson and Guy Mariano, who are all still skating for Girl today.

Girl skateboards have just released an awesome new tee to celebrate the most awesome movie of ‘09 “Where the Wild Things Are,” Coming in three bright colours , reminiscent of the classic ipod commercial. cant wait for this film to drop into a cinema near me.

I CANNOT WAIT for this film to come out in December. Some people in work got to see it yesterday and I am super jealous. We’ve also got one of the awesome Where The Wild Things Are limited edition series Girl Skateboards in the office. So cool. Something VERY SPECIAL coming up in Huck#18 too but I’m sworn to secrecy, you’ll just have to buy it to find out!

Oh and the Karen O and the The Kids soundtrack ‘All Is Love’ is pretty cute too.

Two years ago, Girl Skateboards had this sick obstacle at the Vans Downtown Showdown, the Girl Gonz Wild where they basically recreated the wave at EMB. Oh yeah, I guess there was the Gonz gap and big three. DUH. (speaking of Girl Gonz Wild, I gotta throw up all those old pics too)

So Fast Forward to the present day and here’s the new obstacle they created, freaking china banks. Check out the lovely pic below. Wish I was there for this one too. Somebody take some pics of Shel Black if you see him out there today.

The Kanye West video for “See You In My Nightmares”, directed by Spike Jonze, ends up turning into a short film.

It features some of the Girl Skateboards riders (also their photographer Ben Colen), as I previously posted before.

The film will be available on iTunes on Sept. 8th.

Incluso se hizo una serie de tablas increíbles que puedes ver aquí junto a una reseña. Buen skate pero más cafrerías y por la noche y durante el día wizard sticks de tamaños desmesurados. Etnies is the winner, but I enjoyed the DVS version the most.

Girl Skateboard company teams up with New Era to create a fitted which looks like the sign on the female restroom. Actually its the official logo representing the Girl Skateboard company, but it does look sicker on a fitted. Available now.

This clip kept me going through Marley & Me…just.

For the record, this was the second-most cherished book of my childhood, right behind The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.  When I first heard “they” were making a movie out of it, I was downright angry.  How dare “they” turn one of my favourite children’s books into a movie.

I usually have a problem with movie adaptations, because usually the images of the characters on-screen, are not the same as images in your imagination.  Case and point – for me – are the Harry Potter movie translations. While the story lines are equally as compelling as are the novel’s, the picture painted by my imagination is what I yearn to see on screen, not the picture in the director’s imagination.  While good movie adaptations are possible (Lord of the Rings!), the right set of circumstances must be in place.

Flash-forward to a rainy Montreal evening, and as I so often do, I am wasting away hours on the internet.  Months had passed between first hearing of the movie and now, and it had slipped my mind.  On Apple Trailers, I saw the link for “Where the Wild Things Are” (WTWTA from here on out) trailer. Expecting the worst, I hesitantly clicked.

Turns out Spike Jonze was the director. Chalk up a point.

Turns out Spike commissioned his pals, the Arcade Fire, to do an acoustic version of their hit “Wake Up”. Chalk up another one.

Turns out that they got the looks of the characters right (because there were illustrations it is much easier to meld everyone’s imaginations). Chalk up another one.

Turns out within a two-minute and five-second trailer they managed to show you, that they had captured the emotion of this masterpiece.  How many films can say that, let alone trailers?

After being so up in arms about making a movie out of this masterpiece, I couldn’t be more excited for it to be released.
