From todays GirlGeekDinner, I just pick up the best of the evening – the Binary Art Presentation of Els Vermang. It is great Artwork combining together technology, space, urban life and architecture. By the way, the food from Fraiteur Fest’in was delicious and location of Bozar speaks for itself.

year of conception: 2008

binary waves is an urban and cybernetic
installation based on the measuring of infrastructural ( passengers,
cars…) and communicational ( electromagnetic fields produced by
mobile phones, radio…) flows and their transposition into luminous,
sonic and kinetic rules. This relation between the installation and the
urban activity happens in real time and sets each person as an element
of the installation, as a centre of the public realm.

The installation binary waves
is constituted by a network of up to 40 rotating and luminous panels of
3 meter-high and 60 centimetres wide, placed every 3 meters to form a
kinetic wall. The panels rotate around their vertical axis, and have a
black reflective surface on one side, the other being plain mat white.
The synchronisation of their movement allows to generate visual wave patterns
where is amplitudes and frequency depends on the speed of each panel
rotation. The imputes are provided by infrared sensors, capturing the
surrounding infrastructural flows, defining the frequency and amplitude
of the rotation. According to this set up, each impulse is transmitted
from one panel to the other, describing visual waves running from one
side of the installation to the other, and then bouncing back while
progressively loosing oscillation. All these principles relate the
‘micro-events’ happening in the area to a unified play of light,
colours and sounds directly derived from the rhythm of the city flows

@h3lge How is your first week going

Manchmal müssen die wirklich spannenden Fragen von Aussen kommen. Wie war/ist also meine erste (offizielle) Woche bei kinkon?

Also erst einmal bin ich sehr dankbar. Dankbar für die vielen Dinge, die ich bereits in diesen ersten Tagen lernen durfte. Viel Zeit zum Reflektieren war ja nicht, wir hatten gut damit zu tun, schon einiges zu bewegen in diesen wenigen, ersten  Tagen:

• Wir haben unser neues Logo / Erscheinungsbild verabschiedet.
• Wir haben kinkon.de und unser corporate blog relauncht und auf eine Plattform gebracht
• Das Team / die kinkon-Familie hat sich besser kennen gelernt
• Wir haben zusammen einige typische StartUp-Regale aus einem schwedischen Möbeldiscounter aufgebaut
• Wir haben uns für eine Grafikerin entschieden, die ab sofort die weitere Ausarbeitung unseres Corporate Designs übernimmt
• Nahezu das gesamte kinkon-Team kann jetzt auf Twitter verfolgt werden und unter @kinkon finden sich die offiziellen news des Unternehmens.
• Eine erste Pressemitteilung summiert noch einmal die wichtigsten Neuigkeiten der vergangenen Wochen: Unser Management Team ist jetzt komplett, die Finanzierung steht und Ihr könnt Euch jetzt schon für unsere kommende Beta anmelden.
• Erste Veranstaltungsteilnahmen wurden entweder announced (und hier) oder haben schon statt gefunden.
• Wir haben einige Termine mit potenziellen Partnern vereinbart, von denen wir uns für unsere Sache einiges erhoffen. Und sind sicher, weitere werden folgen.
• Ach ja: Und fast hätten wir schon einen Trend gesetzt: #familyfirst

Das sind zumindest mal die Dinge, die wir schon erzählen können.

Für mich persönlich – und dahin zielte ja die Frage – waren andere Dinge viel spannender. Nämlich die Gespräche mit ganz unterschiedlichen Menschen aus ganz unterschiedlichen Bereichen: Dem Jugendschutz, der Presse (ja, @azrael74 nächstes Mal versenden wir unsere Pressemitteilung nicht zusammen mit 3.000 anderen und stören die Redaktionsruhe in Berlin), GeekGirls, Menschen aus Kinder- und Jugendmarketing und vielen anderen mehr.

Was ich persönlich in diesen (ersten) Gesprächen gelernt habe?

Es gibt in diesem Land einen tiefen Graben. Und am einen Ufer des Grabens stehen die Technologie-Experten, die wissen, wie Kinder- und Jugendschutz im Internet dank heutiger Technologie aussehen *könnte* … am anderen Ufer steht die Familien-Politik, die genau weiss, was pädagogisch und verantwortlich wäre, aber leider nicht immer den Technologie-Termini und der technischen Entwicklung folgen kann.

Und dazwischen, unten im Graben, sitzen Eltern und Lehrer und warten darauf, dass sich jemand daran erinnert, dass es ganz konkrete Alltagsthemen gibt, denen weder technologische Angebote noch politische Maßnahmen wirklich gerecht werden.

Mein erstes Gefühl nach einer ersten Woche bei kinkon: Es muss doch möglich sein, dass man sich im Graben zusammen rauft und gemeinsam eine Brücke bildet, so dass Politik und Technologen sich in der Mitte treffen und sich dem eigentlichen Thema endlich handfest annehmen können: “Wie schaffen wir für die mediale Erziehung der nächsten Generation optimale pädagogische, politische und technologische Rahmenbedingungen, um Eltern und Pädagogen bestmöglich dabei zu unterstützen, Ihrer Verantwortung nach zu kommen?“.

Zum Glück erwartet mich jetzt ein Wochenende zusammen mit meinen eigenen Kids – und ich bin der festen Überzeugung, dass allen genannten Gruppen und Interessenslagen eins sehr gut tun würde: Sich selbst immer wieder daran zu erinnern, dass bei allen Aktivitäten eigentlich eine Sache im Mittelpunkt stehen sollte: Die Familie.

Und wenn ich am Anfang der Woche noch nicht sicher war, ob #familyfirst der richtige “Slogan/Claim” für das ist, was kinkon vor hat. Jetzt bin ich es. Denn ich weiss, dass wir – wenn wir die passende Unterstützung “aus dem Graben” bekommen werden (und dabei könnt Ihr alle helfen!) – hierzu unseren Beitrag sicher werden leisten können. Denn wenn man es genau überlegt, kann sich keiner von uns in dieser Gesellschaft einen solchen Graben leisten.

GirlGeekDinner 9 was about music and technology. With among others the cute audiocubes by percussa and a dj set by boskabout. Waw .

I finally met the wonderful Tantieris, stumbled upon the funny and witty Tante Annie and had a great time chatting with the other ladies (and boys). My sacoche -or man at my side- for this edition was the inspiring Polle, whose marketing blog I immediately added to my blogroll.

Quite some unforgettable stories at the Girl Geek Dinner as well. Girl Geek x almost drove her car in the canal when coming to the dinner because she blindly followed her gps. And that was only the beginning of her story, which included a stop in a kebab store and a worrying phone call to her husband beacuse she got lost (despite or because of the gps?). Luckily she finally got there . Have to admit I kind of recognize that. I have often driven my car in one way streets in the wrong direction just because my gps told me so. Leading to dangerous situations .Girl Geek y told about how she almost got locked into a big store because she didn’t think the personnel was in a rush when announcing that the shop was about to close. Made us plan a big party during closing hours. But shhht, that’s still a secret .

Il momento più emozionante di tutti è stato verso la fine, quando hanno assegnato la menzione d’onore alla mia “vicina di GGD“, che invece era stata verso l’inizio. E allora forse sembra proprio un cerchio che si chiude questo wire-kend urbi-nerd.

e forse non sono poi tanto “addentro la rete” se continuo a divertirmi di più a raccogliere follower per strada piuttosto che su twitter. Grande il lavoro della mia squadra e complimenti invece ai vincitori. peccato che per mettere foto di donnine mezze svestite sul blog da competizione mi son persa gli interventi del barcamp, ma ho visto che son qui, quindi li vo a vedere dopo. E se invece ho nostalgia di tettolute da calendario, ormai so in quali siti trovarle… ma penso che queste non le vo a vedere.

I’m heading to Ghent today, for the 8th edition of the Belgian Girl Geek Dinner. For the second time, I take a so-called ’sacoche’ with me. Translated that means ‘handbag’, which refers to the guy a girl can take with her.

For the first edition of the Girl Geek Dinner, Maarten Schenk was my ’sacoche’, for this edition Hannes Couvreur will accompany me. I met Hannes during my journalism studies a few years ago, we lost contact a bit, and are now back on track because our intrests have somehow developed in a similar way. Web 2.0, creativity, blogging,… Things we both follow and bring into practice.

Theme of the Girl Geek Dinner is Art and technology, with Eric Joris (performance group Crew) and Eva De Groote (Almost Cinema festival) as speakers. Also Jan Leenders, the Belgian artist who made my wonderful Twit2Art, will be there. The next Girl Geek Dinner will be hosted in my hometown Hasselt by the way.

Certe volte non sa che fare, quando l’aspetta qualcosa di nuovo, se scriverne prima o dopo. Perché se ne scrive prima corre il rischio di anticipare i tempi, ed è un rischio che preferisce contenere, visto che è naturalmente tendente a pensare troppo avanti.

Allora sceglie di non dire ora, e di raccontare poi, quello che succederà alla sua prima (se la faranno entrare alle prossime!) GGD programmata per venerdì a Urbino. E siccome sarà anche la prima volta che va nella città ducale, dove sua mamma e Giovanni Pascoli hanno studiato per essere quello che sono, è pure un pò felice.

(e comunque non si spiega perché questo post lo ha scritto in terza persona… sarà che ultimamente ha giocato troppo con Twitter e con lo status di Facebook!)

On Friday I participated to the first roman GirlGeekDinner, at Maud’s, betwen the Colle Oppio and the Colle Celio, close to the Coliseum. Beautiful end-of-summer evening, nice sunset over the Foro Romano. Of course the dinner was open also to GuyGeeks…

Maud is your typical all-white cool bar, but the good thing was that nothwithstanding all the girl power thing and white faux-croco environment, big bowls of chunky cubes of mortadella were being served too!  Evvai…!!

The purpose of the aperitivo was to raise awareness of women’s role in technology, bring online social networking in the real life, eventually with a view to doing business together and it was good fun. There were speakers doing informal speeches, guests were sporting on their name tags everything from the domains of their newly-created start-ups to their beloved blogs. The ambiance was quite international and multikulti, and I discovered a few interesting websites, business models and talked with enthousiastic start-up owners. So, looking forward to the next event…

(Er…the amateurish way in which I still manage these 2 blogs shows you that I’m no genuine Geek, but MeinMann is part of the family, so let’s say that I married into the Geek family…).
