Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes. She has problem

Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes. She has problems with closet space because she has too many books. Date a girl who has a list of books she wants to read, who has had a library card since she was twelve.

Find a girl who reads. You’ll know that she does because she will always have an unread book in her bag. She’s the one lovingly looking over the shelves in the bookstore, the one who quietly cries out when she finds the book she wants. You see the weird chick sniffing the pages of an old book in a second hand book shop? That’s the reader. They can never resist smelling the pages, especially when they are yellow.

She’s the girl reading while waiting in that coffee shop down the street. If you take a peek at her mug, the non-dairy creamer is floating on top because she’s kind of engrossed already. Lost in a world of the author’s making. Sit down. She might give you a glare, as most girls who read do not like to be interrupted. Ask her if she likes the book.

Buy her another cup of coffee.
Let her know what you really think of Murakami. See if she got through the first chapter of Fellowship. Understand that if she says she understood James Joyce’s Ulysses she’s just saying that to sound intelligent. Ask her if she loves Alice or she would like to be Alice.

It’s easy to date a girl who reads. Give her books for her birthday, for Christmas and for anniversaries. Give her the gift of words, in poetry, in song. Give her Neruda, Pound, Sexton, Cummings. Let her know that you understand that words are love. Understand that she knows the difference between books and reality but by god, she’s going to try to make her life a little like her favorite book. It will never be your fault if she does.

She has to give it a shot somehow.
Lie to her. If she understands syntax, she will understand your need to lie. Behind words are other things: motivation, value, nuance, dialogue. It will not be the end of the world.

Fail her. Because a girl who reads knows that failure always leads up to the climax. Because girls who understand that all things will come to end. That you can always write a sequel. That you can begin again and again and still be the hero. That life is meant to have a villain or two.

Why be frightened of everything that you are not? Girls who read understand that people, like characters, develop. Except in the Twilight series.

If you find a girl who reads, keep her close. When you find her up at 2 AM clutching a book to her chest and weeping, make her a cup of tea and hold her. You may lose her for a couple of hours but she will always come back to you. She’ll talk as if the characters in the book are real, because for a while, they always are.

You will propose on a hot air balloon. Or during a rock concert. Or very casually next time she’s sick. Over Skype.

You will smile so hard you will wonder why your heart hasn’t burst and bled out all over your chest yet. You will write the story of your lives, have kids with strange names and even stranger tastes. She will introduce your children to the Cat in the Hat and Aslan, maybe in the same day. You will walk the winters of your old age together and she will recite Keats under her breath while you shake the snow off your boots.

Date a girl who reads because you deserve it. You deserve a girl who can give you the most colorful life imaginable. If you can only give her monotony, and stale hours and half-baked proposals, then you’re better off alone. If you want the world and the worlds beyond it, date a girl who reads.

Or better yet, date a girl who writes.

Lately, I’ve joined the dark side. I’ve fallen victim to my latest obsession. I could I resist? I am weak and it comforts me. I spend a large amount of my day searching and sorting. Looking for something spectacular. And in this search for something spectacular I have neglected my blog and for that I am very sorry, but I can say no. PINTEREST YOU ARE MY DRUG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s a vortex that sucks up all of my time. But today while seeking something that makes me smile. Something to add to my imaginary closet. Something to add to my list of fattening, calorie loaded, wickedly delicious collection of “someday I won’t care how much weight I gain so I’ll eat everything in site recipes”. I stumbled upon something someone wrote. Something that they took directly out of their heart and placed into all the right words. The origin is still unknown. The greatest of wonders are things we know very little of.

Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes. She has problems with closet space because she has too many books.
Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Today, kids all across the country will be celebrating the birthday of Dr

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Today, kids all across the country will be celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss, who would have been 108 today! (Yeah, I’ll bet he’s glad he’s not!)

So how do we celebrate the birthday of one of the best-loved writers of children’s books in history? BY READING! Yes, my living room today is littered with books (okay … there’s a toddler here who’s obsessed with emptying baskets, it’s possible my living room is littered with books everyday, ’cause there are usually about ten baskets of children’s books spread throughout the room). But still, we’re enjoying it.

We contemplated making green eggs and ham, but we’re kind of into natural foods and avoiding food dyes around here. So, we’re going to do something else green — OOBLEK!

Ooblek is a fun (messy) substance that is perfect both for sensory fun (for preschoolers) and also makes a great science lesson (is it a solid or a liquid? It has properties of both!)

Here is a fun video about making Ooblek. (The powder is cornstarch, the liquid is plain water. We like to add food coloring to ours — we just don’t EAT much food coloring!)

And … in celebration of reading for those of us a little past the Ooblek stage …

Yes, I know. I’ve been neglecting my blog again. Well, it’s that time of year in the financial world when all our attention is focused on trying to meet year-end deadlines. And on not committing felonies in the workplace.

Since that’s not enough of a strain, I am also trying very hard to re-focus on writing fiction. Now that the holiday season is over. Especially since this most recent holiday season seems to have started way back around Labor Day and lasted well past New Year’s Day. Ahem.

So I’m kind of busy here and feeling horribly deprived of that precious nebulous thing called “spare time in which to write blog posts.”

Luckily for you, sometimes I take a break — a very short break, hardly a blip on the timeline, really — and wander aimlessly around the interwebs while my brain tries to recharge itself and sometimes I find interesting things to share. This is one such thing. A swoon-worthy thing, actually. A video of a guy named Mark Grist, a spoken word poet, reciting a poem about how what he wants is . . . a girl who reads.

As if being smart and funny are somehow not seductive enough, he also has a totally charming Brit accent. It’s like a trifecta of awesome.

I wonder how he feels about a girl who writes?

Recently on the internet, this quote has been circulating:

“If you find a girl who reads, keep her close. When you find her up at 2 AM clutching a book to her chest and weeping, make her a cup of tea and hold her. You may lose her for a couple of hours but she will always come back to you. She’ll talk as if the characters in the book are real, because for a while, they always are. Date a girl who reads because you deserve it. You deserve a girl who can give you the most colorful life imaginable. If you can only give her monotony, and stale hours and half-baked proposals, then you’re better off alone. If you want the world and the worlds beyond it, date a girl who reads.”

-Robert Pattinson

Except…the quote was never said by the actor. It’s actually an excerpt from an essay written by Rosemarie Urquico.

Rosemarie Urquico’s essay was most probably a response to this an essay written by a guy named Charles Warnke.

From my perspective, I honestly don’t agree with neither essays and I pretty much think that this whole thing is kind of…excuse me…stupid.

First of all, if Rosemarie Urquico’s essay was indeed a response to Charles Warnke’s, then, she deeply misunderstood it. Charles Warnke was using a little literary trick where he advised the readers of one thing, against another. But gives descriptions and details in a way that suggests that he is actually meaning the opposite. Reverse-psychology, if you will. What he is trying to say is, date a girl who reads because they are far more superior than those who don’t.

I think it’s all so stupid. Both of these people talk about girls as if we’re things that can be simply categorized into “reads” and “doesn’t read” in order to determine how date-able we are. It makes me want to facepalm five-ever. I know plenty of people who don’t read. I know people who only read graphic novels and manga because they like analyzing pictures more than words. I know people who can digest a book a day and still hungers for more. I know people who have been reading books thicker than any high school science textbook since they were 7 or 8. I also know people who’d rather watch television and movies. Some people don’t read at all, but are profoundly interested in math, science and are incredibly intelligent. I know people who only read romance novels because it makes them smile, and people who only read science fiction novels. All these people have the ability to make someone else sublimely happy. And, it has nothing to do with whether or not they read.

Of course, I’d like someone who reads. This is because I love to read, and it’d be nice to have that as a common interest. However, in no way is it a top priority. Just because someone doesn’t read, it doesn’t mean that they are vapid or are useless at expressing emotion. It doesn’t mean that they’ll be shut away forever in a passionless relationship, letting days slide by, mundane. And, nobody’s missing out on extravagant, life-changing adventures by dating a girl who doesn’t read. If we were to put girls into categories such as “reads” and “doesn’t read” in order to judge how “special” they are. By the same token, why don’t we just put girls into “cooks” and “doesn’t cook”, “swims” and “doesn’t swim” categories too? Right…because the following would sound pretty stupid:

“If you find a girl who swims, keep her close. When you find her up at 2 AM doing back-strokes in the pool and weeping, make her a cup of tea and hold her. You may lose her for a couple of hours in the water but she will always come back to you. She’ll talk as if the the water can talk, because for a while, it can. Date a girl who swims because you deserve it. You deserve a girl who can give you the most colorful life imaginable. If you can only give her monotony, and stale hours and half-baked proposals, then you’re better off alone. If you want the ocean and the oceans beyond it, date a girl who swims.”

I don’t know about you but, I would never think for one moment that whether or not a person swims, determines how “special” and compatible they are.

Have you ever read something and just fallen in love with it? This is one of those things for me. Hope you enjoy as much as I did.

You should date a girl who reads.

Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes, who has problems with closet space because she has too many books. Date a girl who has a list of books she wants to read, who has had a library card since she was twelve.

Find a girl who reads. You’ll know that she does because she will always have an unread book in her bag. She’s the one lovingly looking over the shelves in the bookstore, the one who quietly cries out when she has found the book she wants. You see that weird chick sniffing the pages of an old book in a secondhand book shop? That’s the reader. They can never resist smelling the pages, especially when they are yellow and worn.

Give her books for her birthday, for Christmas, for anniversaries. Give her the gift of words, in poetry and in song.

Because girls who read understand that all things must come to end, but that you can always write a sequel.
