Abis baca tulisan itu, saya berasa ditampar. Apa selama ini, saya sudah menjadi ibu yang baik buat ara? Kalau mau egois, saya bisa jawab pertanyaan itu dengan kata “SUDAH” yang ditulis gede-gede lalu ditempel di depan pintu. Tapi ternyata, saya salah. Yet, i’m not a perfect mom. Sampai sekarang, usia Ara 3,5 tahun, saya merasa masih jauh dari kata Menjadi Ibu yang Baik. 

Bagi saya, yang masih menyandang status ibu selama 3,5 tahun, menjadi seorang ibu itu susah-susah gampang. Apalagi, seorang ibu yang bekerja macam saya. Bukannya saya membela diri, dengan status saya sebagai ibu pekerja, tapi memang betul adanya. Menjadi seorang ibu yang bekerja itu sangat amat berat.  Masalah utama adalah soal waktu. Rasanya, waktu 24 jam sehari untuk ngurus rumah tangga, anak, suami dan bekerja itu sangat amat kurang.

Dari saya hamil, saya sudah ketar-ketir dulu. Apa kelak saya bisa jadi ibu yang baik buat anak saya? Bagaimana caranya saya bisa menjadi ibu yang baik? Kalimat-kalimat itu terus menerus berputar-putar dalam otak saya. Apalagi melihat beberapa berita di tv, ada ibu yang mencampakkan anaknya atau bahkan membuang anaknya yang baru lahir di got atau tempat sampah. Ya Allah..naudzubillah..

Sebagai ibu baru, saya sadar saya masih benar-benar bodoh. Tidak punya ilmu apapun. Tapi zaman sudah semakin canggih. Dan saya gak mau kebodohan itu terus-menerus menyetir saya. Mulailah saya browsing sana-sini mencari ilmu parenting. Tanya ke sana ke mari pada orang yang menurut saya ‘berhasil’ mendidik anak-anaknya. Untungnya, waktu saya hamil, banyak teman-teman yang baru saja melahirkan. Jadi saya bisa mencuri ilmu dari mereka. Setelah berguru ke mana-mana, akhirnya saya menarik kesimpulan, bahwa menjadi ibu yang baik itu gampang kalau kita benar-benar menikmatinya.

Salah satu ilmu yang saya dapat itu dari ibu saya. Working mom dengan lima anak . Saya masih ingat, waktu ibu saya masih punya anak tiga (termasuk saya), tidak pernah menggunakan jasa asisten rumah tangga. Semua pekerjaan rumah diberesin sendiri. Baru ketika, ibu hamil anak keempat dan kelima, beliau mempekerjakan asisten rumah tangga. Selama mengasuh kami berlima, saya tidak pernah melihat ibu saya mengeluh, apalagi menangis seperti saya. Ketika saya tanya, apa kuncinya, ibu hanya menjawab “ikhlas dan sabar”. 

Ikhlas melakukan apa saja, termasuk ikhlas dan sabar menerima ketika anak-anaknya sakit keras. Saya masih ingat, ketika saya seumuran ara sekarang ini, nyawa saya hampir tak tertolong karena terkena diare. Dokter mengharuskan saya dirawat di rumah sakit karena kondisi saya yang sudah sangat parah. Tapi, ibu merawat saya dengan penuh kesabaran. Maaf bu, sampai sebesar ini, saya masih saja merepotkanmu.. Hiks..

Sampai sekarang, saya merasa masih jauh dari kata ikhlas dan sabar. Belajar ilmu ikhlas dan sabar itu susahnya luar biasa. Tapi saya, harus bisa. Demi anak dan keluarga kecil saya! Sebisa mungkin, saya sediakan waktu khusus untuk ara. Saya berusaha selalu ada untuk ara. Apalagi, seusia ara, merupakan golden age. Banyak pertanyaan kritis yang diajukan, mengajak main dan sebagainya. Saya berusaha untuk selalu menemani apapun yang ara lakukan.

Tapi yang namanya manusia, meski diati-ati, tetep aja ada yang terlewat. Kadang saya suka keceplosan dan kebablasan. Begitu lihat saya pulang, Ara yang lagi kumat manjanya, langsung ngajak main dan minta ini-itu. Huhuhu.. di luar kendali, kadang saya bisa high tempere gitu. Nolaknya dengan nada tinggi. Meskipun gak lama kemudian saya sadar, lalu buru-buru minta maaf sama ara. Maafin bunda yah sayang *kecup*.

Tapi saya sekarang sudah bisa mengendalikan diri untuk gak marah-marah tanpa sebab lagi di depan Ara, Alhamdulillah.

Nah, persoalan terberat saya dulu, adalah, pada siapa anak dititipkan ketika kita bekerja? Itu bukan soal sepele. Apalagi orang tua dan mertua saya, juga bekerja. Tidak gampang mencari asisten rumah tangga yang baik dan bisa mengerti kemauan kita. Kalau orang bilang, “sekarang ini, nyari istri jauh lebih gampang dibanding nyari asisten rumah tangga.” Mau dititipin di tempat penitipan anak, juga gak tega. Kesannya gimanaaaa gitu. Di’parkir’ pagi, sorenya diambil. Akhirnya dengan berat hati, titip ke tetangga yang emang kebetulan kerjaannya mengasuh anak. Alhamdulillah, si tetangga ini, bisa jaga kepercayaan yang saya dan suami berikan. Anak saya diurus dengan baik dan sentosa.

Saya sadar sesadar-sadaarnya, sampai sekarang, saya masih jauh untuk menjadi ibu yang terbaik buat Ara. Tapi dengan segala keterbatasan dan kekurangan itu, saya berusaha untuk terus berada di samping ara untuk mendidiknya menjadi anak yang salihah. Rabbi habli minasshoolihin.. Saya memang bukan yang terbaik, tapi saya akan berusaha jadi ibu terhebat buat ara. Insha Allah..

Expert Shield Screen Protectors

Protecting the LCD screen of my Canon 6D was one of the first things I did when I unpacked it. In the old days putting a protector on your camera display meant buying and clipping on something that resembled a see though lens cap.

These covers were bulky and added extra size to the cameras display. Though they would protect the camera screen against scratches and damaging chemicals (sweat, moisture, makeup) it would diminish the quality of the display.

Now everyone knows (or should) that the LCD screen on your camera is not an honest depiction of your work and will usually show a completely different image than the one that appear on your calibrated computer monitor. If I went by what was on my LCD display out on a shoot I’d have lost my mind a long time ago, but the added plastic covers didn’t help this meaning that many photographers would ignore the protectors until their LCD screen got scratched and more often than not would put a cover over an already damaged screen to protect against further damage.

Thankfully technology has come a long way in the last ten years mostly going hand in hand with touch screen phones, tablets and cameras. Something a little more responsive was needed and so came the dawn of adhesive screen protectors. These ultra-high transparent screen protectors meant that none of the display quality is lost and in the case of touch screens on iPhones, cameras the touch screen functionality is not affected in any way.

When I got my Canon 6D I got a screen protector with it. To say the least it was an awkward affair as it was larger than the screen and the cloth that was given to clean the screen was embarrassingly small. I cut the screen protector to size and after cleaning the screen applied what was a slightly crooked and ill fitted protector.

However I’ve recently upgraded my screen protector to an Expert Shield screen protector. The guys at Expert Shield contacted me and asked me if Id be willing to review their product. I’ve applied the screen protector and taken the camera out on an events job over the weekend and jotted down the following.

One of the first things that struck me was that (perhaps a silly note) the screen cloth provide was a lot larger than the one I’d

been supplied with by my previous screen protector – screen shot shows the comparison in sizes and the coin is the size of a standard €1 / £1 coin. The material in the cloth caught my attention, as it was anti static and quite soft. It not only cleaned the LCD of my camera (this took a while due to me removing every smudge and speck of dust and then double checking) but also has found its way into my camera bag as a filter wipe.

I’ve tested the screen protector against minor irritations (during the shoot there would have been grease sweat and minor irritations to the LCD from me wiping it to check the histogram though out the day.) The Screen protector remained intact and un damaged.

Another thing that I liked about the Expert Shield screen protectors was that they are actually made to the size and shape of your cameras LCD screen so in this case there was no need for me to cut the screen protector to the required size for my Canon 6D.

The Expert Shield screen protector was easy to apply and throughout the shoot didn’t come off / cause any irritation or interfere with my display in any way.

Now the Packaging says that when its time to remove the screen protector it comes off easily and leaves no residue. This is something that I’ll take their word for because I have no intention of removing my Expert Shield screen protector.

Over the yeas I’ve had a number of smart phones and cameras, which means I’m no stranger to screen protectors and though they all boast to do the same thing the main selling points for me would be the following.

The screen protector is tailored to the make and model of your camera, smart phone, iPod etc. meaning there is no cutting involved.

Secondly I can’t stress how much this sold me on this product. The cloth provided to clean the screen. It’s size and manufacture it easy to clean the LCD screen and apply he screen protector without any dust or air bubbles forming.

So the Expert Shield screen protector gets a thumb’s up from me.

My grandmothers kindled the creative flame in me. My mom’s mom, Audrey, had eight children and I’m sure she made all of the dresses on my mom (the oldest) and her sisters in that picture. She may have made her own as well. I’ll always remember the layette that Grandma sewed for my mom when my baby brother was born. It was so beautiful and delicate. She was a garment and craft sewer. My dad’s mom, Nezelene, on the right, was a quilter. We called her Granny in her later years. She was so brave and generous in her quilting. She wasn’t a perfectionist. The quilts weren’t art, they were to be used. I have so many quilts hand stitched by Granny. I love them all. Both of my Grandmas have passed away. I miss them and always will. But, I have their legacy here in my home. They will not be forgotten.

Give away meaningful things in a forthright manner and people will remember;  you will store up their good will, excite their curiosity, and eventually, there will be a payday. It works.

Everything about the publication and marketing of my novel THE OTHER is imbedded in that concept. When ever possible, I have done the work myself. No cost. But I have made sure that the product is top quality. Only when I could not insure such quality because I lacked the skills or ability have I paid to have it done.

And then I take my blood, sweat, and tears and give it all away. First, my Ebook. I gave it away over Facebook to my friends, colleagues, and acquaintances for a predetermined period of time. After that, back to full price (It’s interesting that free is so much more appealing than $1.99). My free offering opened a lot of channels that led to sales.

Even my paperback edition, which costs me a little over $5 each to order, I give away. I give them to friends and supporters in a calculated and limited manner. I expect that they will talk about it, maybe show off the author’s signature and so spur sales. But the most meaningful give-away is to libraries and other public and private institutions where many readers have access to it. And, hopefully, will spread the word.

Giving my personal time and talent is another productive freebie. I offer to speak at these same libraries and bookstores and retailers. For free. About writing, about my book, about my book’s characters – about anything that refers back to my book. And I seek permission to sell the book at that venue. It’s win – win.

The important goal of all of this free gifting is to promote familiarity not just with my book and its cover, but  with me,  the author. Facial recognition in association with my book is critical. I want to be recognized,  to be remembered in association with my work. So I send my photo around when I send my book; I keep it visible. I put it with the book on a sales poster, or on the back cover of the book. It says that I stand by this product. And in the future, when my photo is associated with another book or product, people will remember. And if what they remember is positive,they will buy.

The take & bake primo style pizza is ideal for a girls night out.  Since it is so easy to pick them up, put in the fridge and bake them when the girls come over to hang out.  The pizzas are truly comparable to restaurant gourmet type pizza that you would have in a restaurant. I paired my pizza with a bottle wine (I’m almost sure most Moms do)!

They were all really good.  Tasted fresh, high quality ingredients (no pink slime meat) and made my life easier.  One of my children has a sports practice almost every night, so I just picked the pizzas up after school, put them in the fridge and baked them when we got home from practice.  Fresh and better than waiting for a delivery.

My family’s favorite was the Prosciutto & Arugula deLite!  The prosciutto was thin and the cheese was creamy and this one is on a thinner crust.  I thought for sure the kids would not like the arugula that you get to sprinkle on top, after the pizza is cooked, so I just put it on 1 half of the pizza.  Of course, I was wrong and they LOVED the arugula and only wanted the half that had arugula on it.

The Goat Cheese & Fennel Sausage was great too, but I will say, my children did not like to large chunks of sausage.  I thought they were really flavorful and all the ingredients went perfect together.  If we order the pizzas with the sausage on a regular basis, we will get the Mini-murphs pizza kits (cheese & pepperoni) for the little ones.

The Sun-dried Tomato & Fennel Sausage was my second favorite.  The sun-dried tomatoes were sweet and the feta cheese was so good, really all the ingredients tasted just like a premium pizza.  I love the fact that I can get such a high quality pizza that I can make at home, since I don’t get out much.

I will definitely get the Primo pizzas for my next girls night out and the Prosciutto & Arugula deLite will be our new go to pizza.

Side note: my husband (the chef) loved them too and rarely eats pizza!

The Blue Dragon describes the terror of the catastrophic tsunami that hit Sri Lanka in December 2004. The novel focuses on a group of children—Hanseni, and her siblings Awade and Manori, and their friend Nishian—their individual experiences, and how they managed to pull through this horrendous event. Overcoming their fears the children struggle against the forces of nature, fighting against the odds to save themselves and their friends. Their stories portray courage and hope, and demonstrate the inner strength and determination that exists in the human spirit when faced with an unforgiving natural disaster. This emotive and heartfelt story shows how even, in the most terrifying of circumstances, the will to live triumphs.

 I had a few reminders today like the stack of packages that went to the post office today (thanks so much for getting your addresses to me so promptly. All packages went out today except two that will be hand delivered on that will ship out tomorrow.) and the remnants of crafting supplies that still need to be put away, but other than that my Birthday seems like the distant past. Not just YESTERDAY!!! Crazy. I guess I have simply moved on. I really enjoyed focusing on sewing and crafting last month but all the while I was desiring to work on my new hobby. Photography. I’ve got a class lined up starting next week and I am ready to learn. During the month I snuck into my crafting time and read a wonderful photography book called Photographing Your Children. It really got my gears turning on how I want to photograph my children and document their lives.

So, I’m not sure what is going to happen with this blog. I don’t have a plan at all. I really like visiting this space so we will have to see what happens.

In the same vein Mays Challenge is 30 days of squats.  We’re going to (clap) Lift.It.Up!  And I promise you won’t be a “girly-man” but have “buttocks so firm”

Squats are a great exercise to lift your behind.   As a runner they help strengthen your lower back, gluts, hips, quads, knees, hamstrings and core.  You can make it a total body workout with all the variations of squats, adding dumbbells or a medicine ball or overhead press or bicep curls.

Squats are mostly known as a leg exercise, but they promote body-wide muscle building by catalyzing an anabolic environment.
Squats are also one of the best functional exercises out there, promoting mobility and balance and helping you complete real-world activities with ease.
Squats also help you to burn more fat, as one of the most time-efficient ways to burn more calories continually is by developing more muscle.
Squats have long been criticized for being destructive to your knees, but research shows that when done properly, squats actually improve knee stability and strengthen connective tissue.
Squats are one type of exercise that should be a part of virtually everyone’s fitness routine, as they provide whole-body benefits.

We’re still doing #goalscheck!! Declare your goals for May and post them every Monday! It can be anything from run more miles to declutter your closet!

My May Goals:
Run: More Miles I have to increase so I can be ready for back to back Halfs!!  (what was I thinking)
Maintain: Gotta keep the scale (and waistband) in check.  I want to get out of May in the same jeans as I started in!
Strength: Get It Done!  Either Bootcamp or DVD twice a week.
Squats: Keep the Challenge going with variety!  I also break things up 20-25 per hour.
Survive: For the first time in 30 years I’m going tent camping.  I love being outdoors… just not like this!  This is am important event for my husband, he really wants me to go and I’m going.  There are lots of trails and I’m soooo excited to get some trail running done!
