I love the idea of an easy link between my online and offline world but would rather have a poken embedded in my mobile than carry around another gadget in my pocket.

A mobile interface would also enable me to keep my poken up-to-date through my mobile internet which is so much easier than having to connect to a fixed internet connection.

I can really see this taking off as a nifty gizmo for the conference and exhibitions market.

Nice work.

Learn to construct, compose, and control myself – especially my single mindedness of thought. This is the most important.

God natt!

I was so excited that the mixer (Behringer DDM4000) had arrived. Although just now. =(

Here’s my experience about online ordering, international warranty, and Behringer, PSSL.com and InternationalCheckout.com in general.

I ordered it last October along with some other music tools like a good sound card (ESI Gigaport HD – 24bit output 4 channel stereo output, USB input) and a DJ headphone (Pioneer DJS-5000). While testing it, (I have to test it thoroughly since its a Behringer), I found out that the item was defective. Other items are not. The high and middle equalizer in channel 1 produces a noise. So I have to let the dealer here in the Philippines repair it. 1) They did not have an experience of repairing the product since its relatively new in the market. 2) They won’t refund/replace/repair it for free since Behringer does not have an international warranty. My dilemma was to let it repair or get it replace with a good one. Since the item is new, I decided to email and return it back the store paying a huge amount of PHP 9,000 for the shipment and PHP 3,000 so that the online store can process them. (The item was originally priced at PHP 17,000 + PHP 15,000 for shipment) That sucked!!! I was uberly pissed with that.

My experience of online ordering was generally good but there are few things I’d like to remember: You have to check what products you buy since you don’t have a way to tell if it works outright since you can’t test it. Reviews doesn’t count if you got a lemon product. Credibility of the store is a must. Not only of the store but also with the shipper. You have to look also for an international warranty of the product; what to do if the product is defective; refund, replace and return policies. I think Apple products have a very good international warranty support policy and should be the basis for companies willing to have international warranty. There’s nothing like Apple.

To conclude things out, DDM4000 had arrived yesterday after 3 weeks of replacement + shipping. Duh! But I was still exited and tested the functionality right away. Good thing it doesn’t have any defect that I noticed. Noise in each channel in each equalizer was gone. MIDI is configurable. All knobs, faders and buttons are working. I will still test it thoroughly though.

Finally, I have plucked up the courage to write in my blog post! I guess I was finding it difficult

Finally, I have plucked up the courage to write in my blog post! I guess I was finding it difficult to find subject matter, but I was surfing the web, looking for something nice to get my sister for her birthday next week, and I came across the Chumby.

The Chumby Is a cute little gizmo that is like a cross between an alarm clock and a computer. It is designed to be versatile and hackable but that does not mean you have to be a computer genius to work it close to its full potential. The Chumby, put simply, is your window into the internet.

There are two Chumbys – the Chumby Classic (picture above) and the Chumby One (picture below).

The Chumby connects to your domestic Wi-Fi signal and is similar to a little customizable computer, that has all your internet “needs” readily available at your fingertips. You download Widgets and navigate to them on the Chumby’s touch screen. There are over 1500 widgets available for the Chumby, form Email, stocks and weather to Facebook, internet radio (and a FM radio on the Chumby one), and google- all free. You can have all the information; News, Blogs, flicker, Facebook, myspace… Everything! without any distractions, except maybe form the music from Pandora playing in the background.

Sadly, my little sister wants an American Girl Doll, and not a Chumby… looks like I am going to have to save up for something twice as expensive that is completely useless!

The Chumby classic goes for just under $200 and the better but boxier Chumby One goes for just under $100.

You can buy a Chumby here. And i found a very good, detailed Chumby One review here.

What a special, awesome program between the county’s Community Resources Department, the Probation Department and Another Chance for Love! Taking on extra duties of training, maintaining and bonding with the three dogs were nine young men (17 and 18 years old) as they learned what having patience is all about! This is a remarkable story. I hope they repeat the opportunity often to the young men there! If you are interested in adopting a dog in the Another Chance for Love program, contact Janette Thomas at acfl09@yahoo.com or 714-505-9235.

I badly needed an option to answer my google voice on an international phone. Thanks to Google Voice – Gizmo project integration, I can now do that. Gizmo supports forwarding calls to an international phone number (but at cost). So, I just setup forwarding at Gizmo and added Gizmo number to Google voice. Now, when someone calls my Google Voice, my international phone rings

On Gizmo:

Login to your account

Go to call forwarding tab

Set your international number as the forwarded to phone number

On Google Voice:

Login to Google Voice

Go to settings link

Under Phones tab, Click the Add another number option

Enter your Gizmo5 number and choose Gizmo as the option in the dropdown

Google Voice verifies the number by calling and you are all set

November was a shitty, shitty month.

I had my department fest going on, which was itself a major pain in the ass. There was YP ka whole mess going on which I was trying to juggle with my college studies and tutions. And there were things happening at home, which I had no clue about till I got back.

1st November, my beloved dog, Gizmo, died, all of 7 months, 12 days. A very lovable labrador, I could not bring myself to believe this because I was really looking forward to his company after a whole month of not being licked by him early in the mornings, sleeping with him late in the afternoons, and playing really frantic and excited football with him in the evenings. Of course, it would be papa who made his daily snack of scrambled eggs and paranthas and other thingummies. Shit, I can’t even recount the dozens of naughty habits with Gizmo lightened our life in such a short span. It was like mum and dad had a new son to live with when me and my brother were away for studies. And now I won’t have any Gizmo stories to tell me friends either :’(

And all this ended when Gizmo contracted that horrible disease called Parvo. He had a habit of eating shit – monkeys, pigeons, anything. And since my grandpa was really ill, my dad could not take as good care of him.

And I got this news when I had gone to visit my grandpa, who himself was in a critical condition in a money-making hospital.

Yesterday was horrible, a scene out of a nightmare. I had to say goodbye to my dog and friend of thirteen years, Gizmo.

Or Gizmo Orlando Adcock to be specific. Because as my friend Katie said to me, when your pet has been part of your family for so long they become human to you. Thirteen years is longer than my oldest friend at seven years and the house just isn’t going to be the same again. Who is going to be there to always greet me eagerly when I walk through the door? Who is going to there to keep me company when everyone else is away? And who is going to be there to always put a smile on my face with the unconditional love and affection that only a dog can give?

The thing that I found really hard to come to terms with yesterday was that the decision had to be made right now. He took a turn for the worse after having arthritus and just being generally off for a while. But we could have held off a few days, tried drugs, he was walking a little bit, just badly. But I know, it’s no quality of life and that this way is kinder. It just doesn’t feel like it at the moment.

My Dad is in Germany on a business trip and is devestated that he didn’t get to say goodbye, he even wanted to go see his body today. In a way not being there was kind a blessing for him because it wasn’t a nice experience at the vets at all. But he was my dog, I had to be there for him however unpleasant it was. And I guess being there is serving as part of my closure and we will scatter his ashes next week as well.

I want to move away from this sad day now and share with you a few photos and happy memories I have of him, and you can see the rest of my photos here.

He was certainly a scamp in his younger years – at the house he was born in, I remember saying hello to one of his sisters until he came bounding over to give us a few nicks. I tried to give him a cuddle but he kept chewing on my fingers. Yep, this was the dog for me! I think I encouraged some of his rebellion though; I can’t have been more than ten when I let him sit on the settees whenever my parents weren’t around. I’m not sure that they ever figured out why he kept jumping on the furniture all of a sudden. And I can’t count the number of mornings that I woke up to hear a pitter patter in my bedroom when Gizmo had seized his chance and went exploring in the forbidden upstairs, before he was promptly called back.

However the little terror was no stranger to laziness and giving me the evils when I wasn’t paying him enough attention or sharing my food with him in his later life. See here for his moody expression, especially when taking a bath! Although, you couldn’t blame the poor guy for being sulky sometimes, he was deaf and it must have been hard living in a silent world.

I have fond memories of taking him to the Lickey Hills and watching him jump gracefully over fallen trees, no mean feet for such a little guy.

See how much fun me and Gizmo had in the snow? Or not? Yep, he ran away as soon as possible.

He had a love hate relationship with my sister’s dog Simba, although I suspect it was more love than anything. See him here looking baffled for at the little bundle of energy next to his calm demeanour, but also see them cuddling and playing together. It’s quite ironic really, because when Gizmo was young he used to annoy my sister’s older dog (and his half brother) in the same way.

I can still remember the day that we first brought him home, and how happy I was when the the little fluffball fell asleep in my arms.

Lastly, here he is being mauled by my friend Laura and cuddled by me.

Rest in peace, my Gizzymo, I’ll love you and miss you always.

It seems David Jenkins of Pensacola, Florida would do anything for his little Yorkie. He drove 24 hours, stopping only once, to get furry little Gizmo the dog in for surgery at the U of M’s Veterinary Medical Center.

“There was very limited options for dogs with Gizmo’s heart condition so, I’m just glad I found Dr. Olson,” Jenkins said, just before he explained that he learned of the doctor through a Google search.

Janet Olson, DVM, performed a cutting-edge surgery on Gizmo Tuesday morning. “This is the first time that this procedure has been done on a dog of this size,” Olson explained. Gizmo is barely 3 pounds.

Doctors inserted a tiny catheter through Gizmo’s leg to get a plug into her heart. When she was born, a valve in her heart didn’t close; a problematic issue that would cause the left side of her heart to take on too much blood. “Without having had the ability to occlude this, there was a high probability that within one year’s time she would have gone into heart failure and died,” Olson said.

The surgery took 2 ½ hours. Because doctors used the catheter, Gizmo’s recovery was almost immediate; had they been required to open her chest a full recovery could have taken weeks.

By Wednesday afternoon, Jenkins was back in his car, on his way back to the Florida panhandle. His girlfriend is 8 months pregnant and was quite eager to be reunited with Gizmo. “It was all on a wing and a prayer,” he said about his journey north. “It worked out I guess. I should probably buy a lottery ticket at this point, I got pretty lucky,” he said about his new relationship with the U of M’s Veterinary Medical Center.

E muita gente torceu o nariz.

Above is the newest version of _______?

a) Mini disc

b) Contraceptive diaphragm for Robots

c) Portable Black Hole

d) All of the Above

If your answer was C, your correct! (always go with C if your not sure, Its a safe bet) Thats right,I said Black Hole! Students at the Southeast University in Nanjing, China have done it now! The above picture is 8 and a half inch disk and is covered in concentric grooved rings. The two odd symbols you see on the illustration are the shapes of the grooves. What these grooves do is trap light and force it to the center. For all you Manimals out there “the ring makes light it’s bitch” and then “puts it’s bitch to work” for the greater good of all mankind. Unlike current materials the ring doesn’t emit heat or reduce the “Juice” that it collects, it’s perfect. This is possible with the use of special meta-materials that bend magnetic waves. How will this impact you (the reader)? SolarPanels that are so efficient in energy collection, that electricity could become a human right and not a monthly bill. Well, I can hope anyway.

There have been ones about “giant monsters”, “sea monsters”, “classic monsters” and “human-sized monsters” so where was all love for the little monsters!

So in the spirit of Halloween, this top ten looks at all those small monsters people quickly forget:

We have looked at 6-10 (Click HERE if you forgot) and now we on with the countdown.

#5. Troll

The Troll series has become legendary. Troll 2 is considered one of the worst best movies of all time. Whatever that means. Troll 2 also inspired a 2-hour documentary about the phenomenon called Best Worst Movie that is currently a smash on the festival circuit.

To be honest I dont understand the appeal. I have seen both Troll movies and they are just not worth your time. The series ranks #5 on my list because of all the hoopla surrounding the series. I have read many reviews of Troll 2 (377 on imdb alone) and so many people say its the funniest movie they have ever seen. Could be the worst movie ever, fascinating.

As for the documentary on the making of Troll 2, check out the link below:

This pint-sized wonder has the most sequels of anyone on this list. The success of the Leprechaun series is mind-boggling. Warwick Davis, best known for playing Wicket in Return of the Jedi and Willow Offgood in Willow, is at the centre of this hidden franchise. His wisecracks and pure insanity in the role have made Leperchaun one of the most successful DVD horror series ever with six films.

The series started when a man stole the Leprechaun’s pot of gold and fled to the US. The Leprechaun tracked him down but was outsmarted by the man and locked in his basement. Many years later Tory (Jennifer Aniston) and her brother release the Leprechaun who is hell bent on getting back his pot of gold.

Taking the Leprechaun myth and making it sinister and twisted is interesting for one movie, but six? Well, they did really get extremely desperate with carrying on this series when they launched the Leprechaun into space and took him to “the Hood” for two sequels.

His astonishing success and Warwick’s dedication to the role place him #4 on my list but I can’t say I have ever been a fan of this series.

#3. Critters

Critters was a series of films (4 believe it or not) that captured my imagination because of just how silly they were. An meteor carrying these sharp toothed menaces crashes into a field outside a small town and in the first film the townfolk have to fight back against these little guys.

The Critters are aliens kind of like a cross between Tribbles from Star Trek, Gremlins and I am not sure if you remember a toy called Madballs. The Critters roll into balls and then bounce around before they strike.

I am still not sure if the humor in the movie was actually supposed to be there. The central hero of the series is a hapless mechanic named Charlie, (played by Don Keith Opper), who leads the fight against the Crites in all four movies. What makes him such an interesting hero is that he’s the unlikeliest of heroes. He’s dim witted, unattractive, not very imaginative but enthusiastic. He’s also quite funny.

In the first film, the Crites are tracked by some bounty hunters who are trying to stop them before they destroy another planet. Eventually Charlie teams up the hunters and becomes one. This series is quite imaginative and worth a look this Halloween. Oh did I mention the third movie stars a very young Leonardo DiCaprio?

I have fond memories of it as one of those horror series that people never admit they liked. Okay, I admit it!

#2. Chucky

Okay, I have a pretty simple reason why I love Chucky so much! The whole idea of taking a serial killer and mystically placing his mind in a child’s toy that looks like a cross between a Cabbage Patch Kid and Raggedy Andy is utterly brilliant. The whole Cabbage Patch Kid phenomenon freaked me out to begin with but putting a mind like Jeffrey Dahmer inside it made me howl with glee.

Chucky rocks! The comedy about him complaining he can’t do basic human things and how mad it gets him makes me howl. I love how this serial killer is in hell. Not to mention you have to give credit for the amazing voicing by Brad Dourif for bringing that frustration to the surface.

Since Chucky debuted in 1988, there have been five films as Chucky’s twisted mind and curse are examined and re-examined through each sequel. The first three films show us some of Chucky and how complicated he is but the films feel more like Halloween sequels. In 1998, seven years after the last sequel, Chucky returned in Bride of Chucky and this time Chucky became more than a twisted child’s toy but a real life character. The whole series was changed forever with that movie as the humor and Chucky’s frustation manifested even more and well the addition of a love interest was definitely going to amp up the humor as a whole.

I love Chucky movies because of the humor and how writer and creator Don Mancini was able to shape Chucky into something more memorable than a psycho with a knife.

#1. Gremlins

In 1984, Steven Spielberg sponsored the former Roger Corman protege, Joe Dante on his new film Gremlins. The movie told of a down-on-his-luck inventor who buys a Christmas present for his son, Billy (Zach Galligan). The present is an animal called a mogwai, whom Billy names Gizmo. The cute adorable little creature comes with three very special rules.

1. They hate bright lights.

2. Don’t get them wet.

3. And what ever you do no matter how much they beg and scream, never, ever feed them after midnight!

The film starts off very innocent as Billy starts to connect with Gizmo as they watch movies, sing and relax. Then Billy spills a glass of water and Gizmo gives birth. (Well, multiplies anyhow) Gizmo’s offspring have a mean streak in them and are led by Stripe.

Roger Corman actor-staple Dick Miller makes an appearance in the film as he has done in so many of Corman’s goofier classics. Anyone remember Chopping Mall? But in this film he is the one warning Billy about gremlins and how they get into machinery and are a menace. Billy laughs off the warnings. Well his mind changes when Gizmo’s offspring are accidentally fed after midnight.

The movie is a classic because it mixes horror and comedy into a holiday-themed family movie to amazing results. The clever rules, little creatures, distinct personalities and well the chaos that comes after are all priceless. I still love that kitchen battle with the Gremlins.

Gremlins spawned many copycats after it was released and many of them made this list but the reason they are number one isnt because they started the whole phenomenon but because of the film’s impact. The film seems to magically get us to love these creatures almost right off the bat. Most horror movies don’t allow us to relate or even treasure every frame that these little puppets are in. Some franchises it takes movie after movie before we even get to know the creatures but for Gremlins that is established as soon as Billy’s dad recites the rules. That is why they rank #1 this list.

I love how the movie plays up the fact that utter chaos can come from simplicity. Gremlins is an amazing movie and one I still watch every year around Christmas. Gremlins 2 also ranks in my top 50 favorite sequels of all time. So when or if ever are we going to see a third movie? This series is screaming to be a trilogy.

So Says the Soothsayer.

Y ustedes ¿?

Last night after finishing a blog post I sat back and watched “Upgrade Me” on BBC iPlayer.

In this Simon Armitage the poet and gadget lover (which I didn’t know until seeing the programme) investigates the obsession people have with technology and gadgets, and their seemingly endless need to have the latest gizmo. He travels to South Korea, which has transformed itself in the last 30 years into the most technological country in the world.

I think this is well worth a view but I don’t know how long with will be available on iPlayer for, so apologies if you’re already too late to watch it.
