Innovative technology with a futuristic touch...

The day before yesterday, I was atop Eltnen Fortress and I decided to glide down all smooth and cool-like, but my foot hit one last bit of fortress edge and it reset my flight timer and I plummeted to my death right there off the side of the fortress. For additional luck, someone who witnessed this embarrassing moment actually sent me a tell asking if I was okay. I politely explained that I didn’t need a rez and that was that… or so I thought. Yesterday I was in the same area outside the fortress while killing plumas (to get me some more coins) when I got a tell suggesting that I not die and of course it was the same gentleman. He must have decided that I was indeed an uberidiot and needed all the help I could get because he gave me two level 27 items (and I had just hit 23).  So thank you Morden of Dareis Mai, for being so kind and generous to one so clumsy.

I’ll hold you, cling tightly to all your body

My most recent Nashville Free Press article is all about the fascinating church in San Francisco called Glide, which is, interestingly, the name of a Phish song that comes eerily close to my thoughts on this church.

I’ve been playing with Glide OS 3.0 which is a web-based operating system (well sort of).  You register for FREE with Glide which has a sort of twitter-like front end and then, almost as an afterthought, there is a little button labelled Glide OS which when clicked launches a virtual desktop including a text editor, drawing application, presentation application, email, web design application and FAR more, all bundled with 10GB of storage!

I’m sure there’s a catch, either they will go belly up OR start asking for a VERY large fee to continue using the system.

I’ve played with several ‘virtual desktops’ in the past but this certainly seems the fastest and slickest, is that because there are very few people using it yet?

We can push and pull ourselves through life, or we can just glide in the Now. What is the Now? There are lots of books about it, but you don’t need a book, you will know the Now when you see it, hear it, smell it.  It’s different for everyone but everyone has access to it. Just know that life is perfect and so are you.

Several things happened this week on the Web that caught my attention (other than the fact that “Michael Jackson” information was accessed more times than anything and I mean ANYTHING else). For instance, did you notice that Google has changed the way it displays search results? The Google logo is smaller, results are indented and spacing has been added above the search box. It also removed the page size indicator, which gives you a hint of how long the page might take to load. Actually, it’s looking more like Google Adsense. This week I read a story about Web retailing and taxation with Amazon.com. As you may know, tax on the internet has been a big thing for years with our lawmakers determining that you shouldn’t have to pay some taxes on the Web that are levied on a typical retail level (brick and mortar store). Well, with the problems facing states with fallen revenue, many are pushing to have taxes added in when it comes to internet purchases. I came across Glide this week. You know, transferring files, music or anything in between computers at home and work is a hassle. Especially if you’re dealing with multiple operation systems. But with Glide, a great Web-based tool, you can keep track of all of your media. The Operating System features its own word processor and spreadsheet application, media player, photo editor and a calendar. Two golfers played together for years, allowing for mulligans and ball movement whenever it was “necessary”. One day, the first golfer insists that they play by the rules, no matter what. They both agree, but during play on the 4th hole, a ball ends up on the cart path. Insisting that they keep to the rules, no matter what, the second golfer reluctantly strides over the the golf bags and pulls out a seven iron and proceeds to take practice shots taking asphalt and dirt out of the area around the ball. Sparks flew as he swung and swung. Finally, he takes the shot and it lies up on the green. The first golfer exclaims, “see you made a great shot! What club did you use?” The second golfer replied, “YOUR seven iron”.

I had just moved from an apartment to a house in the same small town. One day at the grocery store, I finally used the last of my personalized checks bearing my old address. The cashier examined the document and asked if everything on it was correct. I assured her that it was, and she started to put the check in the cash drawer. But then she inquired again if everything was accurate.
“Why do you ask?” I responded.
“Because,” she replied, “my husband and I moved to this apartment yesterday, and I don’t remember seeing you at breakfast.”

“Does anyone know what ‘Amen’ means?” the teacher asked.
There was a long silence. Then one little boy piped up, with appropriate, computer-age gestures, and said, “Well, I think it means, like, ‘Send’.”

One final note … I had surgery on Thursday to remove a skin cancer from my nose. Anyone who has had a procedure knows this is no fun. I had the best care, but the end result is still the same. Planning on celebrating the 4th outside? This is a warning for anyone who likes the idea of getting out in the sun in the middle of the day without some sort of protection. Do yourself a favor. Sunblock is the only way to go. Wear a hat. Protect your kids. Doctors will tell you, it’s what you do outside in the first few years of your life that dictates what will occur later on in life, but it’s never too late to start. The phrase, “it can never happen to me” has been greatly overused in our society. No matter if you are fair skined or dark skined, you have a chance of developing skin cancer. Be smart. Be protected. It may be cool to have a tan, but it sure isn’t cool having surgery to remove the stuff that comes as a result of tanning. Have a safe and happy 4th.

Danh tính của người chiến thắng hiện chưa được tiết lộ. Toàn bộ số tiền gần 1,7 triệu USD sẽ được chuyển đến quỹ từ thiện Glide Foundation tại San Francisco, nơi người vợ thứ hai của Buffett đang làm công việc tình nguyện. Trong vòng một thập kỷ vừa qua, các cuộc đấu giá tương tự đã đem về gần 6 triệu USD, giúp quỹ này cung cấp thức ăn, quần áo, các vật dụng cần thiết khác, cả dịch vụ chăm sóc sức khỏe cho trẻ em và người nghèo.

Zhao cho biết, trong lúc dùng bữa với Buffett, ông đã được tỷ phú 78 tuổi truyền lại cho một số kinh nghiệm về điều hành doanh nghiệp cũng như bài học về quản lý hàng hóa.

Theo thống kê mới nhất của tạp chí Forbes, khối tài sản của người giàu thứ hai thế giới đã sụt giảm tới 25 tỷ USD, hiện chỉ còn 37 tỷ USD. Phiên đấu giá bữa cơm trưa với Warren Buffet năm nay bắt đầu diễn ra hôm Chủ nhật, trên gian hàng trực tuyến eBay. Giá cao nhất tính đến chiều 22/6 là 70.100 USD. Với mức giá khởi điểm 25.000 USD, cuộc chạy đua để được ăn cùng Buffet sẽ kết thúc vào ngày 26/6.

Theo quy định, người thắng cuộc sẽ được dẫn theo tối đa 7 người bạn, dùng bữa cùng người giàu thứ hai thế giới Warren Buffet tại nhà hàng bít tết Smith & Wollensky, New York.

I managed to get my hands on Activision’s latest publication, inconspicuously named Prototype. While the name does sound a bit ominous, it certainly doesn’t precursor all the violence, blood and squeaky voices that follow. For the more “sane” people, Prototype is a third person sandbox styled game that epitomizes the visceral tendencies of the young people of this age; and I’m not talking about the “Obtained through intuition rather than from reasoning or observation” definition. A few straight hours of playing this game can bring down a fully grown man’s brains to it’s not-so apparent counterpart that lies a few feet below.

But let’s not bash anything without a preamble. All games need a plot – Prototype’s revolves around one amnesic, super-powered Alex Mercer and a virus-infected New York City. The story goes about with Alex trying to find about his past, while uncovering the delicate intricacies that connect him with a secret experiment conducted by the government.

The game starts off by throwing the poor fellow into a full fledged blood bath involving mutant creatures, mad citizens and a n-number of soldiers, tanks and choppers. You get to slice, dice, blast, punch and consume your way through the ugly mess that is NYC now. Mercer’s powers place him at a vantage point over everything else in the game and provides options aplenty when it comes to killing people. You can either :

• Smash their faces/Slice them in half/Bear-Hug and consume them
• Cut through them
• Grab and throw them at a chopper/tank/another person
• Impale them with tendrils
• Send them flying with a sonic punch
• Crush their heads
• Hijack a chopper and mow through groups of innocent citizens
• Run them over in a tank
• Drop them from a 100 feet in the air
• Shoot them, of course

God Lord ! If only I hadn't eaten my skin therapist ...

It should be noted that I’ve only been through half of the available powers, each of which can be used in combos. Being a sandbox game, Prototype offers side missions which let you collect Evolution Points (EP) which can be later used to purchase upgrades and new powers. Side missions range from infiltrating a military base and blowing it up, to consuming targets to progress in the story. As with most games of the same type, these missions get repetitive after a couple of tries each. The plot is pretty generic and is mostly a pipeline that’s used to offer you a lot of cannon-fodder.

Visually, the game’s sub-par. Soupy textures, low polygon count on most characters and limited draw distances bring down the graphics department. The only saving grace would be the fluid animations that Alex Mercer proudly shows off with his moves. The game has it’s share of technical issues as well. Being incapable of delivering proper sound at high sample rates, the game made me switch to 44100 Hz just to listen to the game’s voice acting which would otherwise whiz past at 150 BPM. Game play-wise, the game mostly delivers what was promised, though the action can get very chaotic. There where times when the scene got so chaotic that I had to pause the game just to stop myself from scarring my conscience permanently with all that blind slicing and skull-smashing.

Prototype might just fit your bill if you happen to be a mindless sadomasochist or a overzealous gamer; but is a huge overkill if you are just looking to relieve your end-of-the-day stress. There haven’t been any reports of play-induced brain damage yet, but it’s only a matter of time before we start hearing such stuff. Here’s some advise to prevent it : Take 20-minute breaks during which you can do the following :

• Read a book that hasn’t the faintest suggestion of violence
• Vacuum the house
• Grab something to eat that’s preferably not human flesh
• Take the dog for a walk and bring him back in one piece
• Remove those imitation-claws from your hands

That being said, I’m off to finish the damned game.

Chris Gardner, Jaden, and Will Smith

I heard the powerful, and formerly homeless, Chris Gardner speak at the Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration in Austin on January 20, 2007. His booming voice and charismatic personality filled the large hall during his talk and enthralled me when I shook his hand afterward.

Chris is best known as the subject of the 2006 $300 million+ grossing movie “The Pursuit of Happyness.” The movie, for which Will Smith won an Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe award, is based on Chris’ New York Times #1 best selling book The Pursuit of Happyness. Jaden Smith, Will’s Son, plays Chris’ son in the movie.

The book details Gardner’s remarkable life journey. In his early years, he had to deal with poverty, domestic violence, alcoholism, sexual abuse, and family illiteracy. He had a violent, physically abusive step-father who beat him and his mother frequently and nearly killed her. His mother was imprisoned twice…once for trying to burn down their house with his step-father in it. He was put in foster care twice and was eventually adopted by relatives.

He became a hospital corpsman in the Navy and afterward, went on to become a research lab assistant in San Francisco and a medical equipment salesman. He left his wife to live with dental student Jackie Medina, with whom he had his first child Christopher Jr. in January 1981.

One day he encounted a well-dressed man (Bob Bridges) with a red Ferrari and asked him what he did. Bob told Chris that he was a stock broker and at that moment, Chris decided that’s what he wanted to do. On the very day that he had an interview (which Bob arranged), he had just gotten out of a 10-day stay in prison due to $1,200 in parking tickets he could not pay. Jackie had accused him of beating her (which he still denies) and disappeared along with all of his possessions and their child. He showed up at his interview wearing the casual clothes on his back and with no formal education or experience, got into the training program at Dean Witter Reynolds.

Through hard work, he was the top trainee and got his license and a job at Bear Stearns. After four months, Jackie returned with his son and Chris gained custody of him. Still not making much money and without the knowledge of his co-workers, Chris and his son were homeless for a year. They spent nights in a bathroom at the transit station, his office, at flophouses, and at parks. Eventually they were allowed to stay at the Glide shelter for homeless women while he saved money for a place for them to live.

In 1987, after just five years and with just $10,000, Chris started his own brokerage firm called Gardner Rich in Chicago. He sold part of his stake in the firm for several million dollars in 2006 and became founder and CEO of Christopher Gardner International Holdings.

Chris is a remarkable man who is making many positive things happen in the world. He met with Nelson Mandela and is working on a venture in South Africa that will bring hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars into the country.

Chris has helped out Glide, which gave him and his son shelter, and helped fund $50 million to build homeless low-income housing and provide emnployment to homeless people in San Francisco, where he was once homeless. He is involved in other philanthropic ventures, serves on several non-profit boards, and has received many awards, including the National Fatherhood Initiative’s Father of the Year honor.

Gardner’s second book, Start Where You Are: Life Lessons in Getting From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be, was published on May 12, 2009. Today the 55-year-old Chris Gardner, who also has a daughter Jacintha who was born in 1985, is worth an estimated $165 million.

 Thomas Jefferson penned these words in the Declaration of Independence:

We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Hmmm… seems like nobody hit the bulls eye. The answer is actually a…

…SNAIL!!!

Yup, it’s a small snail sitting on the windscreen. Somewhere on the Karak Highway, it glided to the roof of the car and most probably blown away because when we arrived at the rest area I searched for the snail but it was nowhere to be found. I was sitting at the front seat and was able to snap a few photos of it. Scroll down to have a look!

We found it hiding behind the wiper after passing the Gombak toll.

Later it moved from left to the right side of the windscreen and started to climb.

A few minutes later, it moved a few centimetres higher up. I guess it wanted to have a better view of the highway

This was the last photo I was able to capture. Later, it glided up to the roof and disappeared. The poor old city snail who thought of moving to a nice town in Terengganu is now lost somewhere near the highway and had to learn to live the country ways. What a disappointment!

Ps; I am now on my way to Terengganu accompanied by hopes of meeting Uncle Azahar at Zainun’s Nasi Ayam.

Judge Gaeta in Bergen (God rest his soul) would do the right thing and give her straight probabtion. How is this even a crime? What a bunch of nonsense. I hope the taxpayers are happy that they are paying some lazy Asst. Pros. and his entire Sexual Assault Victim Assistance squad over 100K per year plus outlandish benefits to prosecute this type of junk.
