NoiseSoft Releases the “QU” and “ROOT DELAY” VST Effects
November 26th, 2009.

NoiseSoft announces the release of two new effects, the Qu quad filter effect and the Root Delay effect.

The Qu is a new VST quad filter effect plug-in for Windows. The Qu consists of four separate “all band” filters with five separate controls for each channel (A to D). The individual tuning of our custom filters produces audio illusions and phenomena that can not be found anywhere else; phase and frequency based stereo panning controls mean that a user can dial in effects that contrast across the whole audio spectrum, especially when used with track envelopes within the host workstation.

Controls and features:
- VOLUME: This controls the master volume. Lowest setting is silence and highest setting the maximum output.
- MIX: Controls the mix quantity of all filter sections.
- PITCH (A/B/C/D): Adjusts the affected pitch of each individual filter section from low drones to bell-like high pitched ringing.
- RESONANCE (A/B/C/D): Adjusts the resonance of each filter, from minimal effect to extreme phase shifting and everything between.
- FREQ (A/B/C/D): The frequency control for each filter has custom coded extreme frequency shifting, capable of lo-fi filtering in the low knob settings, all the way to harsh industrial/glitch effects.
- LEFT and RIGHT (A/B/C/D): These are separate controls for left and right phase shifting.
The Root Delay is an echo / delay VST effect plug-in for Windows. The Root Delay is designed for creating dub style echo and filter sweeps as well as other delay effects found in all kinds of modern electronic music. The effect features a delay section with separate adjustable controls for left and right time settings and also a filter section with controls for sweep rate and depth. The delay and filter combination produces everything from granular glitch / idm style processing to sweeping dub style echos and slap back effects.

Controls and features:
- LEFT and RIGHT: These are separate controls for left and right echo / delay times
(milliseconds from 0ms to 10ms).
- FEEDBACK: knob is for controlling the amount of echos you would like.
From 1 to (almost) infinity.
- RES knob: Adjusts the resonance of the filter, from minimal effect to drone
sound and everything between.
- CUT: Adjusts the filter cutoff. From very metallic to very (sub)bassy.
- RATE: Adjusts the sweep rate of the filter, from about a minute to pseudo granular.
- DEPTH: Adjusts the depth of the filter effect. From light filtering to very dramatic sweeps.
- WET: Controls the volume of the delay and filter effects combined.
- DRY: Controls the volume of the dry signal.

Pricing & Availability:
The Qu and the Root Delay are both priced at $14 each, both available for Windows as a VST effect plug-in.

Here is the first soundtrash that I decided to post. I spent my time to define a style and my references and this composition is for me enought revelant for my intention. It also contains different pieces of previous work which I considered coherant with this project. Basically its a 6 minutes loop-based composition, I needed to make a montage to post it because I do not have all my devices in London to handle it and record it live. I worked with 16 loops and 3 tracks used for transitions. Many of them got basic effects like reverb, flanger, bit crunching, echo, and I also often use kind of a slicer effect on pre-processed loops and in the live handling. The montage is a draft, I did not want to spend too much time on it because the final outcome will be performed. I try to stay simple in the composition and the complexity is in the loops. Using kind of a surgical processing of sound I try to make a loop act between each other

1-Loop-based soundtrack, research 01

Here is the final composition that you can consider like 1 way of combination but there could be many others

2-Loops

I had the need of breaking down this one to explain it and showing that those loops are, in a way, interdependant even if they can be combine differently. Basically there are 3 categories of loops, drums, glitches & percussion (basically different from drum, because those are recorded concrete sounds and processed sound waves ), synth loops (which plays melodies) and samples (take from some of my previous work)

DRUMS

In this project the drum is quite minimal because the rythm came with the Glitches & percussions. I use it just to give a linear aspect to the track and link the other loops

GLITCHES & PERCUSSIONS

This is the most important part of my work. I create those one with digital glitches and some recorded sounds. One by one they don’t make that much sense but when they are played together and with other kind of loop, they create rythm. Then they define the style too.

SYNTH
The 2 first one are played by a virtual analog synth ( I talked about it in a previous post)

SAMPLES
I used samples but from my own work, because I often work on the same tons and with the same multiple protocol. The first one cames from a song named DECE1 ( which is on Myspace) I juste take off the drum. It also contains 3 loops

If you wish to generate some glitch-patterns from your webcam or from existing mov-files, and you ha

If you wish to generate some glitch-patterns from your webcam or from existing mov-files, and you have osx leo or later then pls. scroll down, download and try it. (alpha!!!)

ok then, let see how does it works:

1. after the start up screen push command+i

2. you will need a source, the movie is the default (so you need to drop a ‘mov’ file to the ‘dropyourmovie’ field), or choose the webcam with the ‘movie/live’ switcher.

3. in this version you have pixel or(and) line renderer (you can switch with the enable)

4. there are 3 different play modes as linear (rendering from left to right) or glitchy mode or the symmetrical player.

5. you can apply effects from the list.

6. with the adjust of the ‘resize’ methods you can get different results and also you can animate the ‘resize pixels high’ with the switcher ‘animatehigh’. After enable the animate you can use the slider to adjust the level of the animation.

7. line offset is easy, working in ‘enableline’ mode, but if you animate with the ‘animateline’ switchers, the sliders are working only with bigger number then zero.

8. if you have some nice result stop with the ‘run’ switcher and make a screenshot (now its just working with the command+shift+F4) later will be picture renderer.

9. if you have a nice screenshot, don’t forget to send me, i will be more than happy:)

10. pixelnoizz switcher is working in pixelmode.

tip: try it with more combinations and use different movies (old film, black background animation or whatever)

Conclusion: its a toy, a test application for glitch and non glitch lovers.

Hi there, sorry for lacks of posting. After handed, presented, and received comments from proposal, I’ve been giving myself a bit of time to relax and research more on my project. I’ve also found some more interesting artists and I’ll post about them next posts.

Anyway, I was suggested to look at definition of words and they might help me to narrow my ideas down a bit. So I’d just joint them down here and keep updating them when I find more.

Glitch (*this is the technique I want to focus on):

n.

A minor malfunction, mishap, or technical problem; a snag: a computer glitch; a navigational glitch; a glitch in the negotiations.

A false or spurious electronic signal caused by a brief, unwanted surge of electric power.

Astronomy A sudden change in the period of rotation of a neutron star.

Word History: Although glitch seems a word that people would always have found useful, it is first recorded in English in 1962 in the writing of John Glenn: “Another term we adopted to describe some of our problems was ‘glitch.’ “ Glenn then gives the technical sense of the word the astronauts had adopted: “Literally, a glitch is a spike or change in voltage in an electrical current.” It is easy to see why the astronauts, who were engaged in a highly technical endeavor, might have generalized a term from electronics to cover other technical problems. Since then glitch has passed beyond technical use and now covers a wide variety of malfunctions and mishaps.

Computing Dictionary

/glich/ [German "glitschen" to slip, via Yiddish "glitshen", to slide or skid] 1. (Electronics) When the inputs of a circuit change, and the outputs change to some random value for some very brief time before they settle down to the correct value. If another circuit inspects the output at just the wrong time, reading the random value, the results can be very wrong and very hard to debug (a glitch is one of many causes of electronic heisenbugs).
2. A sudden interruption in electric service, sanity, continuity, or program function. Sometimes recoverable. An interruption in electric service is specifically called a “power glitch” (or power hit), of grave concern because it usually crashes all the computers. See also gritch.
2. [Stanford] To scroll a display screen, especially several lines at a time. WAITS terminals used to do this in order to avoid continuous scrolling, which is distracting to the eye.
4. Obsolete. Same as magic cookie.

Oh yeah, so I’m still Devin KKenny. I’m sometimes a jetsetter, but not as nomadic as I’d like, but I tend to drop science.

Here’s something I’m geeked on right now:

1) cats from Rubulad are now spinning big deal afterparties. That means that somewhat to very glitchy (jazzified ass-shaking electronic dance music) is perhaps making its way into the mainstream? Think Prefuse-73 or Flying Lotus with video hoes. I don’t speak French.

http://www.myspace.com/julesakadjshakey and www.barneyiller.com are what I’m talking about in particular… afterparty for Pretty Lights at Brooklyn’s new Beauty Bar, twas last night…so do research I guess.

2) one of the aforementioned DJs runs this episodic party called WARPER! and they’ve been doing it for 3 years. I’m talking about DJ/occasional cover girl (for DJing) Shakey! So basically:

www.warperparty.com

Warper is the party for people interested in getting in on the ground floor of the latest evolution in DJ culture. Conceived by live electronic music performers to build community, showcase creativity, and share knowledge in the NY area and beyond. Your hosts, Shakey andMoldover, schedule the evening to include feature performers, open electronics jams, and special events in a fluid and energetic environment appealing to both participants and party goers. Warper will be held monthly at various NY and Brooklyn venues and will additionally include all-ages parties, premium shows, and events on the road.

Savvy club-goers can look forward to partying to a program of music created and remixed with the power and flexibility of the latest music technology. Music performers and creators are encouraged to bring their laptops, instruments, drives, controllers, and ideas to share and showcase.

You feel me? A DIY, Free, Dope, volunteer-run, dance party for electronic music. ..that’s HUGE. Flexible institutions, get me? I love house parties, and crazo illegal warehouse raves for a buck in some asbestos building too (especially when my homies get paid for their labor and spin more than 30 minutes) but there are some sick alternatives too, I wish stuff like this was in every spot where people have heard Cher’s “Believe”.

As I was looking around I walked from the cave/pool going towards the mine and ended up back at the Plaza. Weird! I was like how did I get here? Farmtown also had glitches with hiring people to harvest. It didn’t work right either. I would try to refresh and each time it was like crops kept coming back that had been harvested. Did I make money on em twice? Anyways I now have the largest farm possible on Farmtown and it looks cool.
I randomly stumbled upon a Radiohead remix done by Leftfield. As Idiotheque is definitely my fav Radiohead song, (probably since it’s their most electronic sounding and it also doesn’t leave you feeling sad as Thom Yorke is quite capable of doing) I thought I would share as in my opinion Radiohead and Leftfield are in a class of their own. I saw Radiohead live in concert at Thunderbird stadium ( 2003) and the best way to describe it: It Changes your Life!

Idiotheque remix

To follow, here’s a Leftfield classic from the album entitled Leftism.

Space Shanty

and to finish off, here’s a track from Gemmy that reminds me of Leftfield because of the the old electronica beat mixed in new glitchy wonky sounds. Rainbow Roads is included on Mary Ann Hobbs’ new compilation Wild Angels. If you still aren’t tuning into her show on BBC Radio 1 Wednesday nights, I strongly encourage you to start. …and it will get you saying “maximum respect”

Oval’s Markus Popp is widely known in electronic circles for being one of the pioneers of a subgenre known as ‘glitch’ that finds order and beauty in the seemingly erroneous misplaced data and marred physical media used to contain sounds and music in the modern age. Popp famously created much of the music for Oval through various methods of ruining CDs, by scratching them, painting on them, or even breaking them completely, and compiling and reworking the resulting noise into swaths of ambient electronica. While Popp’s once-overs give these sounds a sense of structure and continuity, the original defamation of these sounds can be heard in the ever-present clicks and pops, utilized and reworked into microrhythms, and inconsistent loop lengths and tempos. These two aspects combined give 94 Diskont the most subtle feeling of uneasiness, keeping the listener from drifting off too far into the otherwise serene compositions. However, the methods used to arrive at such a distinct sound are second to the gorgeous warmth and submerged melodies throughout.

The rise of digital media came with this idea that, unlike vinyl or radio waves which degrade over time and distance, the compact disc and digital file were pristine, infallible ways of conveying sound. Markus Popp managed to find the underlying beauty and humanity that exists when even these forms of media succumb to error and fault, and it is once again up to the mortal and imperfect to piece it back together.

Two Unrelated Notes: I’ve added WWWY&B to the blog database on CaptainCrawl, a blog searching site with a great, clean interface and a burgeoning number of sites from which to pull whatever you need. It seems pretty legit, and I added that little button on the right. Word. Also, we have another new friend here! Dave is from Akron, Ohio and enjoys great music, Cleveland sports, and dabbles in hobby-level carpentry (birdhouses, bar stools, magazine racks, etc.) Make him feel welcome.

Working in what little spare time I have on my own music project as I’ve blogged about before. Finally posted a track “internal alchemy” here for now: http://wonderlnd.tumblr.com/post/246178244/internal-alchemy-a-downtempo-glitchy

It’s a downtempo instrumental with some experiments in “glitch”. (Digital audio artifacts/noise/flaws used as musical and percussive elements). Intended as an interlude between the more club oriented tracks.

A little bit convoluted but this is the only place I could find the track online.

1. Record-Play
2. Search for “Roam The Bleak”
3. It’s third from the bottom (at the moment)

I came across this a few months ago looking for some tracks for a short film by creative agency the SRK when I was working for Five Missions More.

I love the way the erratic piano riff builds slowly from the intro and hovers in the background once the beats take hold.

To me the track is anxiety and confusion for the first 1min 30s breaking into a release of strength or some kind of realisation.

To put the story to it…our hero is walking down a dark alleyway late at night, unaware that his arch nemesis is watching through the shadows. Then there’s a reveal…or perhaps it could be part of the soundtrack to a scene in a silent horror film?

Either way (or any other) it’s a beautiful, eerie track. But unfortunately, I can’t find it on MySpace (or even find a MySpace), Last.fm, hypem, iLike, we7 or anything else. So the Hub will have to do.

He’s behind you…

UPDATE: Here’s the track:
