January 31st – the one day it is acceptable to adorn more sequins and glitter than you can ever imagine.  This year, don’t forget to match that sequined mini with a sparkling shadow or liner.  Glittered lids were seen all over the 2009 runways – and not just in the typical silver and gold shimmer.  Urban Decay has a line of multi-colored glitter liners, perfect for that eye-catching New Years look.  Feeling confident enough to cover the whole lid? Apply a glitter eyeshadow from bottom of eyelid to brow line, or blend two different shades. Don’t forget to line the lower lid and inner corners for an eye-opening look. Try M·A·C Glitter eyeshadow in a classic gold or a daring fuchsia, first applying vaseline to the desired area so the glitter will stick.  If the eyeshadow is too much with your sequin dress, focus on just your eyelashes with a glittery mascara or even a pair of fake lashes for a bolder look (Sephora’s glitter lashes).  Remember, focus on one area to avoid a disco-ball disaster.  But don’t forget your glittered top hat and 2010 glasses to bring in the new year!

Back again! I just returned from Zelda’s so now I can finally show you the extraordinary Christmas card I made for her! Of course she got a real present as well, but trust me, nothing can compare to a card like THAT! No, just kidding… or maybe not… Best Christmas gift EVER! I so laughed my ass off. I knew it would be something Twi-related but I’d have never guessed THAT one. Ever. Guess we just know how to rock a Twilight Christmas party!

Merry Christmas! I’ve saved my most festive holiday color for last. I’ve had such fun making these themed frankens, and I hope you have enjoyed them!

I used Color Club Sex Symbol silver glitter, and LA Colors Art Deco in red glitter and green glitter.

I added in 1/4 each of Sex Symbol and Art Deco red glitter. The green glitter is a bit more sheer, so I added 1/2 of that to balance out the density of the red.

As you can see, the red is still the dominate color here, but the silver and green glitter shows up nicely. I think even Rudolph would be pleased with this color!

I just wanted to do a quick post to show you my Christmas Eve mani, which of course could be no other than China Glaze Ruby Pumps. This red jelly with red glitter from the Wizard of Ooh-Aahs collection is one of my all time favorites. I was almost sad to remove the beautiful Depend from yesterday, but who can stay sad when it’s Christmas and you have the prettiest red glitter in the world on your nails?

The kids are so excited to sprinkle their reindeer food on the lawn tonight.  I made them for my kids and Anne gave them to each of her classmates at their Christmas party last Thursday.

I mixed oatmeal and sliver glitter and poured it in a plastic test tube.  I made the “simple and easy” tag using the stamp set “Reindeer Food” from The Angel Company and tied it around the tube with red ribbon.  I used red Stickles to make Rudolph’s nose shine.

If you haven’t already, you can quickly make this project.  Put the reindeer food in a plastic baggy if you don’t have access to a tube.

Lots of girls love fairies. And if you’re like me, then you probably believe they exist. I go through little obsessions with fairies at times, wanting to dress like them, or create gardens in the back yard. Just never have the time to do it though. But that doesnt mean You cant become a fairy. And you dont have to be a 7 year old to be a fairy either. In order for me to become a fairy, (without wearing a full costume and wings to my school or out of the house, which I’d like to do, but cant) I’ve come up with some ideas (for little kids, teens, and for whoever else) that wont take you too long to do, but will give you that fairy feel. Enjoy!

* Remember, three things that are essential to a fairy like essence is glitter, nature, and color.

# 1 – Costume – Ok, so the first thing you need is a costume!! So pick a color that looks good on you: blue, pink, green, orange, purple, etc. If you want, find ones that have flowers or leaves on them. Those are typically called “nymph” costumes, and you can find ones for each season. Most costume stores have wings. Claire’s store in the mall has some smaller ones, but just as cute. If you decide to make your own costume find patterns at a craft store, or Wal-Mart, and then buy the fabric. Usually the fabric you’ll use can be velvet, tulle, sheer, iridescent, etc. You can probably find used dresses and skirts at thrift shops which can be altered and decorated to your liking. For wings, there are many easy directions for making wings, such as these: Wings 1, Wings 2 .  To make a fairy skirt, you can simply take ribbon or an elastic band (the size of your waist or hips, depending on where you wear it), and then take pieces of tulle or mesh fabric (the length depends on how tall you are), and tie them to the ribbon or elastic. Do enough of it so that when you wear it, its not see-through. (But please do wear shorts underneath, we cant take any chances.) With the ribbon you can simply tie it, with the elastic you’ll need a way to fasten the back, either with velcro, or a snap button. You could make large petals out of felt or fabric and attach them before, or after, you tie the tulle. Whatever works for you. As for a top, you can create one if you’re good at sewing, or find a renaissance style shirt (which can be dyed if need be), or a top thats airy and isnt too heavy. Wands can be bought, or made. You can make wands using wooden dowels with foam stars, styrofoam balls covered in fake flowers, with ribbon, and whatever else you can find. Use your imagination! If you want a “crown”, thats simple! Take a headband and glue a fake butterfly, and/or some fake flowers to it. Or, take a few hairpins, or bobby pins, and glue it to that. Put them throughout your hair. Pretty! (Find a few more fairy crafts here.)

# 2 – Make-up - Glitter!!! Glitter!!!!! Glitter!!! I cant say it enough. Glitter makeup of any kind will work. Plus lots of bright colors (unless you want to be a dark fairy, then go with purples and blacks) Paint your nails, use blush and eyeshadow, face paint, etc! Whatever you want, will work just fine. (Make some glitter gel with the recipe here.)

#3- Your Environment - Well you cant be a real fairy, if you’re not anywhere near where a fairy should be. Woods, streams, and a backyard full of flowers and hiding places will do. Or you can create your own fairy garden (which I will tell you how in an upcoming post). You cant fly, but you can sure as heck feel mystical and magical. And in your costume, (and in your mind) you can feel a part of something you never knew before. When you believe you are a fairy, and you sit outside and you create your own magical world, you’ll know when you feel something strange. Its that chill up your spine. That feeling that something is watching you. And the tiny hints of laughter, that dance among the wind. Only then, can you truly be in a fairy environment.

#4- Fairy Perfume – Part of being a fairy is having your own fairy smell. Now sure, you can buy any ‘ole perfume (and I recommend Fairy Dust by Paris Hilton), or you can make your own. You can buy a perfume kit, which include different smells that you can mix and match to create one as unique as you are. You can also buy natural oils, which come in most health food stores, and add them to some water, in a spray bottle. Add a little fine glitter in it for some sparkle. Most fairy smells include flowers, fruits, chocolate, rain, cotton, etc. Depending on the type of fairy you are, create a perfume to match. 

#5- Picking your Talent – You’ll notice that the fairies in the Disney series, all have talents. Animal, Water, Garden, Earth, etc. Whats yours? To determine this you need to pick one that you love most. Do you love animals? Then you have an animal talent. Do you love flowers? Then you have garden talent. Knowing your talent will help you determine the smell of your perfume, the color and accents on your costume, and in your make-up, and how to set up your garden. #6 – Using Your Talents – Now that you found your talent use your talent. Help animals, clean water, tend to gardens, etc. In an upcoming post I will explain how you can use your talents to create a fairy garden. The fairy garden will have elements of all the talents.

#7 – Decorating – If you plan on creating a fairy like aura in your home or room, or even your backyard, you’ll need a few tips. Fairy yard art, and statues will bring a little fairy magic to your home. You can also find fairy doors and windows for your trees, or fairy homes, also try fairy homes 2, and fairy homes 3. (I’ll tell you more about the fairy homes in the next post) Now if you’ve got a lot of money, and you want to spend a lot of money, there are three things you can buy to deck out your backyard. There’s the toadstool chair and table set, the giant butterfly yard art, and the fairy castle.

#8 – Fairy Dust – Now what would a fairy be without her fairy dust? Just as unique as your perfume is, your fairy dust is too. Now, sure you can buy some glitter at the craft store, but you’ll want to add things to it, to make it magical. Make sure the glitter is fine, as fine can be. Chunky glitter is a fairy no-no. Pick a color of your choosing (similar to the colors you picked out before, and your fairy talent). Add a few drops of your natural oils (same as perfume, for the most part). You can also add in some dried flowers crumbled up (crumble them nicely please!) for an added touch. Shake it up good. Put your fairy dust in a cute necklace container, or in a jar (which you can decorate) or wherever you want. Use it for decoration, for fairy trails, etc.

#9 - Signatures! – You can come up with a fairy signature. Not a writing signature though, a physical one. For instance, if your fairy talent is garden, then your signature can be little dried pansy flowers. Or if your talent is water, you can do little pearls. You get it? Something small to represent your talent, and you. You can use your signature when you create things, including your fairy homes, and in your garden.

#10 – Names! – Oh my! What would a fairy be without a name???! Now you can create a name based upon your talents too, or colors, surroundings and what not, or you can use the fairy name generator. Please note that if you do not like your fairy name, you cant start over because its going to give you the same name again! But you might get an idea using it.

Now you know a little bit about what it takes to be a fairy. Of course what I’ve told is only a little bit about what there is to know. Do some research on fairies, and on your talents. Find out where they live and hide, and more! If you still need help, use these fairy books to get you going:

Back to the glitter today! Our theme at work today is candy cane… I figure just about everyone else is going to do stripes of some sort, and so I wanted to do something that was just candy cane inspired instead of looking like a candy cane vomited on my face. =)  I’ve been fortunate in being given a LOT of glitter to try (thanks to www.glittergaloreandmore.com) which has really come in handy with all of these themes. I have a whole lot of pictures to up date with when I do my official glitter review. I’m really excited about it!

Also, starting in the new year, I’m going to be accompanying posts like this one with a face chart sketch of color placement so you can follow along if you’d like! My good friend Gabe, who’s an amazing artist, is designing the face charts for me, and as soon as they’re done, I’ll fill them out and scan them in to my posts so that it’s an easy step-by-step guide. I’ve thought about doing video tutorials, but the truth is there are 10 million make up video tutorials and it’s more of a commitment to just the makeup than I’m willing to make, plus, I enjoy using face charts, so there.

I’m not going to go into -extreme- detail about what I used for this, but I do want to mention a couple of specific products because I used them together for the first time this morning and I absolutely loved the end result.

Even if it doesn’t snow this winter you can still have snow with this cute snowflake project.  Made with a paper towel roll, this craft will add a touch of winter to any home.  The project can get pretty messy so wear old clothes or a smock!  This fun project idea comes to us from Sean Donovan in Massachusetts!  Thanks for the suggestion Sean!

Things you will need:

• Paper towels or newspaper to cover your work surface
• Glue
• Stapler
• Pencil
• Scissors
• White paint
• White glitter
• Paper towel roll or several toilet paper rolls
• Yarn or thread

Step 1: Cut your paper towel roll into 8 pieces.  Be sure to make them as even as possible.

Step 2: Paint each of your cardboard pieces with white paint.  Be sure to cover each piece completely.

Step 3: While the paint is still wet, or using a thin layer of glue, sprinkle glitter onto the outside of each piece.

Step 4: Let everything dry completely before putting it together.  Pinch each end as shown and lay out your pieces in the above pattern.  Glue or staple everything together and let it dry before tying a piece of thread on as a hanger.

Congratulations!  You have just made a glittery snowflake for your home!  Make a bunch and hang them from your windows for a wintery feel.  You can also use silver glitter for a different effect.  Did you do this project?  How did it turn out?  Please feel free to share your comments and pictures in the comments section!

I didn’t get up at 5am today, but I have  a good reason. Tonight I have to work until midnight and I figured I could use a couple extra hours of sleep. Have no fear, my pilates workout is done and I’m writing this in a state of noodle-like relaxation. =)

After I finish this update I’m going to do some chores and then start getting ready for work. Today our theme is “lump of cole”, which translates in makeup-speak to “the smokey eye”.  My plan is to do the blackest, smokiest, smokey eye I’ve ever done. I fell asleep last night concocting the very most perfect black smokey eye recipe on the planet. Yes. The planet. And I think this smokey eye will actually be done without loose glitter (GASP!!). Which will mark the first eye look I’ve done for work in over 3 months that doesn’t involve glitter. This make put a dent in makeup history… ok maybe not, but at least it will be something different for me.

I’ve done a lot of different things with my eyes over the last 2 years that I’ve been working in makeup professionally, and for the longest time I felt as though something was missing… that was before I wore fake lashes. I was scared to death of them honestly, because I’m one of those people who wont do something unless I know I can do it right. And by right I mean as near to perfect as possible. I wouldn’t be able to live with it unless I could get the lash to look like it was a natural part of my lid… even if it was hot pink and an inch long. That being said, when I finally came to terns with the fact that all of my over-the-top glitter and color looked lopsided without huge lashes to balance them out, I put a great deal of time and practice into getting it right.

When I first started wearing them, I would spend a good 15-20 minutes with them, sometimes taking them off and starting over to get them just right. As close as humanly possible to the lash line in order that there not be any gap where one could differentiate the false lash from the natural one. I would wear them a couple days a week and get used to the way it felt to have a lash on (that’s a lot of work all on it’s own!). These days, I wear lashes pretty much every day that I work, and it takes me about 15 seconds on each side to apply them and I’m obsessed.

I feel like I treat work makeup like I’m dressing for stage (hehehehe) every day, and everything I put on is a costume (double hehehehe). The more showy it is, the more I love it. And I’ve found myself obsessed with false lashes. It started out with a pair that just made my natural lash look bigger, and now I’m not satisfied unless they are big, full, and fit for a drag queen.

Having become unsatisfied with the selection of lashes I have available to me, last night I went on a lash search and stumbled upon www.mydivascloset.com and their selection of lashes and… and… it takes my breath away just thinking of the possibilities and ideas these lashes inspire (http://www.mydivascloset.com/fakeeyelashes.html). Glitter Play Dough

Materials Needed:

1 cup flour

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 cup water

1/2 cup salt

2 teaspoons cream of tartar

Food coloring

Glitter

Mix all ingredients except glitter. Mix all ingredients in a saucepan and heat, stirring constantly, until it forms a ball. Remove from pot, add glitter and knead until smooth. Glitter play dough will be good for several weeks stored in a tightly sealed container at room temperature. Do not refrigerate.

 Fairy Glitter Gel

Materials Needed:  

1/4 cup aloe vera gel

1 teaspoon glycerin

1/4 teaspoon fine polyester glitter (color desired)

5 drops fragrance oil (scent desired)

1 drop food coloring (color desired)

Mix the aloe and the glycerin in a small bowl. Stir in the glitter, fragrance and color. It is ready to use immediately.

Fairy Flower Crown

Materials Needed:

2 Pipe Cleaners

Plastic or Silk Flowers

Ribbon

Hot Glue Gun and Glue
Twist one end from each pipe cleaner together. Hold it around the upper part of your forehead and then twist the other ends together. This will make the base of the crown.

If necessary, gently cut/separate the flowers from the main stem. Leave an inch or two of each stem on the flowers if possible. You can also leave some leaves, or use them separately if that works better. Glue the flowers and leaves around the pipe cleaner. Use as many or few as you want.

Once you get the flowers how you want them, you are ready to add the ribbon. Cut 8 – 10 piece of ribbon; all different lengths, between 1 and 2 feet long. Glue one end of each piece of ribbon to the inside, back edge of the flower crown. If desired glue a flower to the other end of the ribbon.

Today, I draw my inspiration from a classic Christmas song, “Silver and Gold.” After all, you can’t go wrong with precious metals!

Silver Siren

For a soft, romantic winter look, take a cue from silver screen beauties Rose Byrne and Leighton Meester and let the eyes tell all.

Okay, so the look isn’t overtly silver, but the cool undertones of the plums and grays make for a pretty shimmery look. You can get a similar effect using Lancome’s Ltd. Ed. Color Design Sensational Effects Eye Palette in Starlette and Stunning, which features coordinated shades to get a fool-proof, party-ready smoky eye ($31.50 on BeFlurt.com). Pair it with a light pink lip–I suggest either MAC Lipstick in Syrup ($9.80 on BeFlurt.com) or MAC Slimshine Lipstick in Scant ($10.15 on BeFlurt.com). Syrup is a frosty light pink, whereas Scant is a little darker in hue, but goes on more sheer than MAC’s usual lipsticks.

To finish the look, try patting on a layer of silver glitter to either your eyes or your lips. An extra fine glitter in a white silver hue will work best to add just the right amount of shimmer. Just a quickie post-  a nice Christmas mani.

This is China Glaze Emerald Sparkle with some little white decals that look vaguely like snowflakes.  Here’s the thumb, they look better there-

The flash washed the out a bit.

On a side note, anyone seen Princess and the Frog yet?  I loved it.  I’ve seen it twice and may go see it again.  I was a Disney baby and a new one got me real excited.
