Brugge.

Brugge is an outstanding example of a medieval historic settlement, which has maintained its historic fabric as this has evolved over the centuries, and where original Gothic constructions form part of the town's identity. As one of the commercial and cultural capitals of Europe, Brugge developed cultural links to different parts of the world. It is closely associated with the school of Flemish Primitive painting.

I’m writing her a letter. Her being, Dana (Dan-uh), Leon’s sister. Dana & I got on

I’m writing her a letter. Her being, Dana (Dan-uh), Leon’s sister.

Dana & I got on very well on my visit to Oz. As I did with Miles, Leon’s best friend. It’s one thing to find someone you’re crazy about, it transcends levels when you’re just as crazy about the people closest to him. The warmth of feelings mirrored… matched; feuds over who likes who, more.

So I’m going to write Dana about my plan to come to Sydney. I want to surprise Leon, be waiting for him on his street. At the bottom of those ridiculously long stairs, there to greet him when arrives home from work. And I haven’t the faintest as to what winning & witty line I plan to have fall from my mouth.

I have no idea what confidence these words carry off, but my stomach is somersaulting over these thoughts. I’m scared. Nervous knees. I’m struggling to write a sentence longer than a couple of words, and that’s coming from someone long-winded. More than half the time I’m laughing at myself for thinking I’m actually following through with this. But my feet keep finding themselves one in front of the other.

My plan? I’m not all together sure. There’s a hazy picture painted, but the outlines are still blurred. A bit on purpose. When have I ever been known to stay within the lines. There’s no question mark on the end on purpose. Open-ended. Just like this journey. I want to let this opportunity take on the same organic nature as this trip. See where things go. I want Leon and I to have the opportunity of time. Time together to see where this wants to go. To mend any damage done, to share all the words I kept in my head. To be able to tell him it took me a while – a thought out, purposeful while. But I did that so I could tell you (Leon) now: here is the only place on this planet I want to be.

It’s times like these that you find yourself re-reading three of the most moving letters to make sure you’re not totally off your rocker & the guy your about to cross oceans for, really wants you there.

All the vicarious fueled encouragements from friends don’t make it any easier to consider alternatives. But here it goes. I just hit ‘send’.

If you have ever lived in or visited Arizona you’ve likely heard the saying, “It’s a dry heat” when discussing the weather. However, at Globetrotter Imports (http://www.importsbyglobetrotter.com) we’ve experienced the effects of this heat unlike most people. Note: Please visit http://www.satbusinessconsulting.com to inquire more about importing. Also, visit http://www.facebook.com/satconsulting and become a fan by clicking “Like”.

In 2004, when Lisa and I were first starting our importing business, we had met with several furniture manufacturers in Guangzhou and Ningbo, China. We had talked with them at trade shows, visited their factories, read their marketing materials, and socialized with them over meals. We believed that we knew all we needed to know to safely invest a significant amount of capital into our first container of unique household items.

After waiting several months for our goods to be manufactured, wrapped and packed into a container, shipped by train from Ningbo to Hong Kong, then by ship to Long Beach, and finally by truck to Tucson, we received our items. I still remember how excited we were when the semi truck pulled to the rear of our store for unloading. Several hours later, with all our items unloaded and staged in our display room, we began to unwrap.

We unwrapped wine cabinets, armoires, entertainment centers, Buddhas, entry gates, benches, and much more. Everything looked great until I unwrapped a large dining table. It had a crack right down the middle of its top surface. My heart skipped a beat before I uttered “What the hell?” and began unwrapping its chairs. Each chair had also split down the middle of their seat. Not only did we have damaged goods, we had no recourse. If we had ordered from another importer in the U.S., we could have returned them or received credit toward future purchases. However, when it came to our Chinese suppliers, we had no recourse. (As it turned out, we were able to sell our damaged items “at cost” to people willing to repair).

The discoveries of the split table and chairs were just the beginning of things to come. Weeks after receiving our Chinese imports, we began to hear “popping” noises throughout the day. At first we ignored the noises and weren’t concerned as to their source. But as the popping became more frequent, I began to suspect that more items were splitting. I became 100% convinced when I received a call from a customer who had recently purchased several thousand dollars worth of items (and who was considering spending several thousand more). “Steve”, she said. “All of my furniture is splitting. I hear popping noises throughout the night!” Not only did my heart skip a beat again, it jumped through my chest and hit the floor.

I explained to her that we were experiencing the same thing and it appeared that Tucson’s dry climate was just too extreme for the wood to age properly. Per our supplier’s product specifications, everything was to have been kiln dried, but obviously they weren’t dried long enough to withstand Arizona’s dry heat. I then told our customer that I would give her a full refund. But because she liked her purchases so much, she decided to keep everything. Valuing her loyalty, we felt we had to do something to rectify the situation. Hence, we surprised her with a gift of a new bookcase valued at $500.

We had learned some valuable lessons from this initial experience:

You get what you pay for. Chinese manufacturers are very good at making almost anything. However, if you want to ensure that the items bought are of high quality, you’ll need to impose higher quality controls at a greater expense.

If you don’t want to pay for higher quality controls, purchase wooden items that can crack. We eliminated our worries about future purchases by ordering rustic looking items. For example, if a crack developed in the side of a rustic looking cabinet, it added to its rustic appearance.

Be wary of purchasing imported wooden items (from China, India, Indonesia, etc. where climates are humid) from stores who operate humidifiers in their display areas. They do this to minimize cracking before the sale. If you’re lucky, they will tell you this and suggest that you do the same in your home. However, to be certain, purchase items that can crack or that have already adjusted to Arizona’s climate. To be really certain, ask the store owner to provide a warranty or refund guarantee.

Please visit http://www.satbusinessconsulting.com to inquire more about importing. Also, visit http://www.facebook.com/satconsulting and become a fan by clicking “Like”.

Spent a few weeks in Peru, with most of my time in Iquitos and Cusco. Had the BEST time.

But I got really ill with dengue fever in Iquitos which took all my motivation to shoot, but there are a couple shots in there. I found the end quote by chance on my last day in Peru and I felt it needed to be shared.

Thank you for watching and if any travel advice is needed please don't hesitate to ask.

Victoria in HDR: Geelong & Surf Coast Timelapse from Filip Laureys on Vimeo.

(Please watch in full screen with sound.)
This summer I had a chance to travel the amazing surf coast in Victoria (Australia) and create another video as a follow up to the Melbourne HDR Timelapse. The weather has been absolutely wild – as always in Victoria and so some really nice shots were born.

As for some stats: The whole timelapse took two months to make, 96 320 shots were taken, 6 000km travelled, visited countless amazing places, met some really nice people, feel in love with Geelong, got really scared by roaring animals at night in the bush and injured my shoulder from hiking with the heavy gear.

Equipment used: Canon 5d mark iii, Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6, Canon 24-105mm f4, Canon 24mm f1.4, Dynamic Perception Stage One slider, Merlin Telescope Head.

Many thanks to The Study Abroad and Exchange Office of Deakin Uni for all the support with this video!

Created by Filip Laureys – http://www.filiplaureys.com
Music purchased from themusicbed.com – Dexter Britain: Ardor
(stay tuned will release a blog post about the workflow of this timelapse)

– https://www.globetrotter.de/wir/ueber-uns/portrait

Da kann ich nur sagen: Schönes Fernweh… @pesigngallery

Some of my best time lapses carefully selected and edited to the rhythm of "Clair de Lune." I carefully chose this song because I felt that the song's melody depicted motion. Each time-lapse was carefully edited to fit the mood of the song. You'll notice the Tempe Town Lake with lights perfectly matches the melody, and the rumbling of the cloud matches the main part of the song. Finally you'll notice 9 brand new time-lapses that have never before been published!

BIPOLAND from Matty Brown on Vimeo.

Please Use Headphones for best sound experience.

Poland is a country with a very brutal past, even so recent at just 70 years ago. The holocaust is something I have thought about often as a child, especially as a 3-year-old with a vivid imagination and my father sitting me in front of the television to watch Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ film. I have always wanted to visit the concentration camps and let the seriousness and power of it envelop me, humble me, and change me. It was one of the most chilling moments of my life, also because of how peaceful and beautiful the camps were. Spring flowers blooming bright and birds playfully jumping over the brick rubble. The calm breeze definitely added to its eeriness.
Poland has this tension that is slowly healing itself as time goes by and newer generations emerge, but you cannot look in any direction without the constant reminder of the past whether it is the remnants of the ghetto wall, or the cautious faces of the elderly. This piece was supposed to be about Auschwitz, but in making the video the surprise was how vibrant, tough, and full of life the Polish people are. I was as emotionally impacted with these new wonderful friends and sensory overload of the gorgeous present-day country as I was with sympathy and sadness at the camps. Even though they are very tough souls, I started to admire them and their country.
I chose to not only observe present-day Auschwitz, but also present-day Poland, document both, and show them as I felt them…knowing the strength of these people who looked forward and fought tooth and nail so the new generations could live these beautiful lives today inspires me so much. This is my tribute to Poland, its people, and the ones who perished in World War II.

****The title ‘Bipoland’ is meant to describe the two feelings of the past and present while I was there. On one hand, there is a heaviness that still lingers from WWII, but on the other hand things are as bright and exciting as any other flourishing country.
