With that said it&#8217;s time to post a bit more and first out is my extremely literally and very quickly translated (at the most 5 minutes were used) Negima ED (Mahou Sensei Negima!: Mou Hitotsu no Sekai, for more info at <a title="AniDB" href="http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&#38;aid=6489" target="_blank">AniDB</a> or/and at <a title="Anime News Network" href="http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10713" target="_blank">Anime News Network</a>).</p>

Even as his red robes weigh heavily on his old, sick body, Angus tries his best to stand proudly. The aging, pale-faced monk has every reason to be proud, as he has always been a faithful servant to his lord and master, Asmodeus.</p>
<p>Coming from such a religious family as his, Angus was inducted into the clergy at the early age of 12. He rose through the ranks quickly, and not only because of his important name. Opportunities have always been plentiful for a master of elemental magic, and he would have risen to the head of the church if he hadn&#8217;t let the best ones slip.</p>
<p>He wouldn&#8217;t have, if he wasn&#8217;t so afraid. Not a coward, he reminded himself. Simply aware. Angus had seen things, visions in shades of grey, including the end of the monastery &#8211; an end marked by blood and fire. The screams in his nightmares had often woken him, his robes drenched in sweat. He never quite understood the meaning of these dreams.</p>
<p>Now, in the twilight of his life, almost alone in the dust-covered halls, he only has one final hope remaining. He hopes Death will come for him before day and dream unite, before he is forced to live his nightmare.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Using the glossaries package in Latex and Linux, Kile]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>I was recently frustrated by the limitations of the <a href="http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/acronym/">acronym</a> and <a href="http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/glossary/">glossary</a> packages: I wanted to have something that joined the functionality of both together. Luckily, I found that with the <a href="http://tug.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/glossaries/">glossaries</a> package, which actually states that it is the replacement for the now-obsolete glossary package.</p>
<p>In order to make this tutorial, I have used the following resources, which you may also find useful: the <a href="http://tug.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/glossaries/">CTAN glossaries page</a>; the glossaries <a href="ftp://ftp.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/glossaries/INSTALL">INSTALL file</a>; (<a href="http://www.latex-community.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&#38;t=1602#p8715">one</a>, <a href="http://www.latex-community.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&#38;t=2976">two</a>) links from the latex community pages; and a page from the <a href="http://www-h.eng.cam.ac.uk/help/tpl/textprocessing/glossaries.html">Cambridge Uni Engineering Department</a>. These instructions work for Ubuntu Karmic Koala: please modify where necessary for your system.</p>
<h2>Installing glossaries</h2>
<p><em>Note for Windows users</em>: While the <strong>makeglossaries</strong> command is a perl script for Unix users, there is also a .bat version of the file for Windows users. However, I don&#8217;t know how to set up MIKTex or equivalent to use this package. Feel free to add a comment if you can add information about this step.</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Get and unzip the glossaries package.</strong> I downloaded it from <a href="http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/install/macros/latex/contrib/glossaries.tds.zip">here</a>. Though you can download the source and compile, I found it much easier to simply download the tex directory structure (tds) zip file.  Unfortunately, the <em>texlive-latex-extra</em> package available on ubuntu or kubuntu does <strong>not</strong> contain the glossaries package &#8211; it only contains glossary and acronym. I unzipped the contents of the zip file into a directory called &#8220;texmf&#8221; in my home directory. You&#8217;ll also want to run &#8220;texhash ~/texmf/&#8221; to update the latex database, according to the INSTALL instructions.</li>
<li><strong>(Optionally) get the xfor package.</strong> If your system is like mine, after you&#8217;ve installed the glossaries package latex will complain that it doesn&#8217;t have the xfor package (which also is not available via apt-get in Ubuntu). Download this package from <a href="http://tug.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/xfor/">here</a>.</li>
<li><strong>Open the glossaries zip <span style="text-decoration:underline;">as root</span> in a nautilus window, terminal window, or equivalent.</strong> You&#8217;ll be copying the contents to various locations in the root directory structure, and will need root access to do this.</li>
<li><strong>Find the location of your root texmf directory. </strong>In Karmic, this is /usr/share/texmf/, though it may be in another location on your system.</li>
<li><strong>Copy the contents of the tex and doc directories from the glossaries zip into the matching directory structure in your texmf directory.</strong> For me, this meant copying the &#8220;doc/latex/glossaries&#8221; subdirectory in the zip file to &#8220;/usr/share/texmf/doc/latex/&#8221;, and the same for the tex directory (copy &#8220;tex/latex/glossaries&#8221; subdirectory in the zip file to &#8220;/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/&#8221;). In theory, you can also copy the scripts/ directory in the same way, but I did step 6 instead, as this is what was suggested in the INSTALL document.</li>
<li><strong>Update the master latex database. </strong>Simply run the command &#8220;sudo mktexlsr&#8221;</li>
<li><strong>Add the location of your scripts/glossaries directory to your $PATH. </strong>This gives programs access to makeglossaries, the perl script you will be using (if you&#8217;re in linux/unix). If you followed my default instructions in step 1, this location will be &#8220;/home/yourname/texmf/scripts/glossaries&#8221;.</li>
<li><strong>Test the installation.</strong> Change into the directory you created in step 1, into the &#8220;doc/latex/glossaries/samples/&#8221; subdirectory. There, run &#8220;latex minimalgls&#8221;. If you get an error about xfor, please see step 9. Otherwise, run &#8220;makeglossaries&#8221; and then &#8220;latex minimalgls&#8221; again. If everything works, the package is set up for command-line use. You may wish to modify your Kile setup to use glossaries &#8211; go to step 10 if this is the case.</li>
<li><strong>Set up the xfor package. </strong>Run steps 3-6 again, but with the xfor.tds.zip file instead of the glossaries zip file. This package is simpler than glossaries, and does not contain a scripts/ subdirectory, so you will not need to do step 7. After installation, try running step 8 again: everything should work.</li>
<li><strong>Setting up Kile. </strong>Though I&#8217;m using Ubuntu, I find the Kubuntu latex editor Kile to be my favourite (just &#8220;sudo apt-get install kile&#8221; on Ubuntu). To set up Kile for using glossaries, you need to add another build tool that runs makeglossaries.
<ol>
<li>Go to Settings -&#62; Configure Kile</li>
<li>Select the &#8220;Build&#8221; choice, which is a submenu of &#8220;Tools&#8221; on the left-hand menu.</li>
<li>This brings up a &#8220;Select a Tool&#8221; pane and a &#8220;Choose a configuration for the tool &#8230;&#8221; pane.</li>
<li>Click on the &#8220;New&#8221; button at the bottom of the &#8220;Select a Tool&#8221; pane.</li>
<li>Type in a descriptive name for the tool such as &#8220;MakeGlossaries&#8221;, and click &#8220;Next&#8221;.</li>
<li>The next prompt will be to select the default behaviour (or class) of the tool. I based MakeGlossaries on MakeIndex, as they both run in similar ways. Click &#8220;Finish&#8221; to finish.</li>
<li>For some reason for me, Kile wasn&#8217;t initially picking up my changes in my $PATH, so in the General tab of the &#8220;Choose a configuration for the tool MakeGlossaries&#8221; pane, I put the full path plus the name of the &#8220;makeglossaries&#8221; script in the &#8220;Command&#8221; field. You may only need to put in &#8220;makeglossaries&#8221;.</li>
<li>In the &#8220;Options&#8221; field of the same tab and pane as step 7, just put in &#8216;%S&#8217;.</li>
<li>Change the selected tab from &#8220;General&#8221; to &#8220;Menu&#8221;. In the &#8220;Add tool to Build menu:&#8221; field, select &#8220;Compile&#8221; from the pull-down menu. This allows it to appear in the quick compile menu in the main editor window.</li>
<li>I didn&#8217;t change any other options. Press &#8220;OK&#8221; in the main Settings window.</li>
<li>You should now be able to access MakeGlossaries within Kile. Remember, you have to run latex (e.g. PDFLatex) as normal <em>first</em>, to generate the initial file; then run MakeGlossaries; then run PDFLatex or similar again.</li>

<h2>Tips on using glossaries</h2>
<p>I usually keep all of my acronyms/glossary entries read by the glossaries file in a glossaries-file.tex or similar, and use &#8220;\include&#8221; to pass it to my main tex file. The links I posted at the top of this tutorial contain a number of useful examples, and included below are my favorites from those locations as well as a few of my own.</p>
<p><em>Note on usage within your document: </em>Please note that to reference these entries, use \gls{entrylabel} for both referencing an acronym or a glossary entry. Further, to access the plural version of either, use \glspl{entrylabel}. By default, you do NOT need to put in a plural form of an acronym: latex will add an &#8220;s&#8221; to the expanded form and to the short form when you reference the acronym with \glspl{TLA} rather than \gls{TLA}.</p>
<p><strong>A plain glossary entry that is not also an acronym.</strong> The first &#8220;sample&#8221; is the label used to reference this entry. The second &#8220;name={sample}&#8221; is the name of the glossary entry, as viewed once the glossary is compiled. The description is the actual definition for the glossary entry:</p>

</pre>
<p><strong>A plain acronym entry that is not also a glossary entry.</strong> The TLA acronym below illustrates the very basic acronym form. The &#8220;aca&#8221; example after it illustrates how to add non-normal plurals to the short and long form of the acronym. Then, again, the first instance of &#8220;aca&#8221; is the label with which to reference the acronym, and the second instance is the name as viewed in the compiled document. The final {} section is the expanded form of the acronym:</p>

<p><strong>Using an acronym within the glossary definition of a glossary entry.</strong> If you wish to make use of an acronym within the glossary definition, and have that acronym indexed properly within the glossary as well as the main text, here is what you do. First, make the acronym. Note that there is nothing special about this acronym:</p>

<p>Second, make a normal glossary entry, and reference the acronym as normal. No special work necessary! Please also note that you can put in \cite references within a glossary entry with no problem at all:</p>

"intensional knowledge", or knowledge about the problem domain in general. The "T" in TBox could,

<p><strong>Using an acronym as the name of a </strong><strong>glossary entry.</strong> You sometimes want to use a defined acronym as the name for a glossary entry &#8211; this allows you to create a definition for an acronym. In this case, build your acronym as follows. Note that you need to add a &#8220;description&#8221; field to the square brackets:</p>

<p>Then, reference the acronym in the glossary entry as follows (notice the different <em>label</em> for this entry):</p>

<p>Interactive TV has been bantered about for the last 10 years and seemed no more likely than beaming up to the Starship Enterprise.  Suddenly it’s all over the trades, with every sector of the advertising business either prognosticating on its future or building it.  As with any new advancement there are new words that describe new processes or redefine and expand the definition of common terms.  For example, “video” has replaced “programming” as the term for moving pictures with sound.  And “TV” has become a “channel” or “platform” rather than the only medium to use channels.</p>
<p>This collection of “interactive TV” terms should help you get started and ready for the new frontier.</p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>Addressable – </strong>Term used to describe the ability to send content to an individual household.  Privacy issues slowing current proliferation.<strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>Authentication – </strong>Verifying consumer as a content subscriber in order to allow them access to programming.  Intended to maintain content rights and protect ad revenue models.</p>
<p><strong>Broadband – </strong>Digital cable, fiber-optic Telco’s and internet access.  Satellites are not broadband.</p>
<p><strong>CAM – </strong>Community addressable messaging.  Future goal of ITV, when messages can be delivered at the HH/STB level.</p>
<p><strong>Click-to-Call/Buy – </strong>Using the remote control to request a call from the marketer or make a purchase.</p>
<p><strong>Content – </strong>Programming, commercials (SForm/LForm) … everything is “content”.<strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>Custom Versioning – </strong>Create various versions of commercial messaging with the intention of trafficking them to unique, targeted viewers based on interest and consumer behavior.   Ideally used when “addressability” is achieved.</p>
<p><strong>Digital Homes – </strong>Homes that receive their TV content from a set-top-box or specialized device that transmits from a web connection.  Homes that utilize a “digital receiver to convert “analog” frequencies are not “digital homes”.</p>
<p><strong>Direct Tune – </strong>Message on the overlay to tune to an OnDemand or VOD unit for more info.  I.e. Tune to Ch 223 to see brand videos.</p>
<p><strong>Dynamic Ad Units (DAU) – </strong>Advanced interactive creative units that serve additional information or entertainment i.e. gaming, geo-targeting, sweepstakes entry.  Like “rich media” online.</p>
<p><strong>EBIF – </strong>Enhanced TV binary interchange format.  Standard software to enable interactivity for all set-top-boxes (STB) regardless of manufacturer.</p>
<p><strong>Electronic/Interactive Program Guide (EPG/IPG) – </strong>Focus is on advancements that will provide better search tools for viewers.</p>
<p><strong>Head End – </strong>The closest distribution point where a cable system transmits content to its subscribers.</p>
<p><strong>IPTV – </strong>Acronym for “internet protocol TV”.  Future ability of the TV set-top-box to interface with the web like a modem, access content and achieve 2-way communications with the web.<strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>MAC Address – </strong>Media access control address.  Like a computer IP address, it’s the unique identifying code given by the manufacturer for your set top device.</p>
<p><strong>Microsite – </strong>Custom landing page.  Also refers to a custom channel or marketplace on TV.</p>
<p><strong>MSO – </strong>Multiple systems operator.  Companies that own and operate a number of individual cable systems in the US.  Over 2,000 cable systems are owned by 7-8 MSO’s including Comcast, Time Warner, Charter, Cox, Cablevision and Bright House.<strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>Multi-screen – </strong>For interactive marketing, usually refers to the three interactive video mediums, TV, Web and Mobile.</p>
<p><strong>OnDemand – </strong>Refers to a consumer-driven action in which programming or commercial content is served and viewed upon request.  Also refers to a range of channels on a cable system designated for requestable commercial content.</p>
<p><strong>Overlays/”Bugs” – </strong>Visual baseline pop-ups added to a TV commercial  reflecting the call-to-action prompts with instructions on how to use the remote for interactivity.</p>
<p><strong>“Pay-for-Play”/Free TV – </strong>Viewers option to pay for programming to eliminate commercials or watch for free with commercials.  Free option should disable Fast Forward.<strong> </strong></p>

<p><strong>Set-Top-Box (STB) – </strong>The predominant TV device that receives all video content and stores DVR programming.</p>
<p><strong>Static ad units (SAU) – </strong>Static overlay units that a viewer can respond to without changing channels or viewing content.</p>

<p><strong>“TV Everywhere”- </strong>Multi screen distribution of content to aggregate viewers and fulfill their expectations of viewing content On Demand.  Usually involves TV, Web and Mobile.</p>
<p><strong>TXT-to-Order/Connect with TSR – </strong>Using a mobile phone prompted by a TV call-to-action to text an order or request a call from the marketer.</p>
<p><strong>Video – </strong>General word for “content” delivered through various media services including broadcast, cable, satellite, telecom and web, across all lengths and formats from user-generated clips to full-length movies.<strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>VOD Advertising (pre, mid, post-roll) – </strong>Advertising positioning during a VOD program airing.</p>
<p><strong>Widgets/”Apps” – </strong>On-screen icon that links to an interactive application.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Today, I was gratified and embarrassed to read a <a title="review (authorized user access only)" href="http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/journal_of_scholarly_publishing/v041/41.1.gump.html">lengthy review</a> of <a title="Getting Published" href="http://www.niaspress.dk/books/getting-published" target="_blank">our book</a> recently published in the <a title="Journal of Scholarly Publishing" href="http://www.utpjournals.com/jsp/jsp.html" target="_blank"><em>Journal of Scholarly Publishing</em></a>.</p>
<p>There was much to be pleased about in this review by Steven E. Gump, not least this comment about our introduction:</p>
<blockquote><p>The opening chapter offers a behind-the-scenes look at the various players in the publishing industry and a brief but particularly fascinating section on the state of the global academic book industry (15–9). This chapter should be required reading for all aspiring academic authors.</p></blockquote>
<p>and this about the importance of (self-) promotion:</p>
<blockquote><p>One way in which this book stands out from other academic writing guides is that it describes how academic authors can themselves add value by actively promoting their books (chapter 10): ‘you should not leave everything to the unseen multitudes in the [publisher’s] marketing department who are working hard to <em>push</em> your book to the market. As an author, you should get actively involved by creating a corresponding <em>pull</em> ’ (160, original emphases). True, such ideas are not new; but I am pleased to find them receiving such in-depth coverage and attention in a book for academic authors.</p></blockquote>
<p>But Steven E. Gump is also known for being a stickler for consistency. Here, sadly, he detailed far too many instances in which a word was spelt this way here, that way elsewhere, commas wandered a bit, etc., etc. He’s right; these errors shouldn’t have slipped through. Like all authors, I wanted a perfect book and (as usual) we didn’t quite get there. The final comment, then, is probably fair:</p>
<blockquote><p>Textual inconsistencies aside, though, I recommend this book for academic authors, especially those in the humanities or social sciences, wanting an insider’s view of academic book publishing in the early twenty-first century. For first-time authors, reading this book will clarify a complicated, lengthy process that is only beginning when the manuscript is finished. Authors will be reminded, too, that, despite hurdles encountered along the way, ‘everyone in the academic book industry &#8230; is there for the express purpose of making the most’ of their manuscripts&#8211;of making each book accepted for publication a success (19). Just be sure to do as the authors say, not necessarily as they do.</p></blockquote>
<p>Quite. And I’m quite sure that &#8211; given how most of my posts seem to be written before dawn &#8211; Steven E. Gump would find many more errors strewn through this blog, too.</p>

<p>Dear Barbara,</p>
<p>Some dance forms, ballet and tap for instance, have terms for each &#8220;move&#8221; that a dancer does, like a plié or a toe drop.  (There&#8217;s a really cool online glossary of ballet terms with video <a title="ABT Ballet Glossary" href="http://www.abt.org/education/dictionary/index.html" target="_blank">here</a>.)  As you know, in our dance studio we like to &#8220;reinvent the wheel&#8221; when we create movement, and as such we name the new moves as well.  We use the names as mnemonic devices to help ourselves remember the moves, but also to make it easier to communicate to each other about the movement, especially if we&#8217;re giving notes or corrections.</p>
<p>For instance, it is a lot easier to say, &#8220;Can you lift your shoulder to hold me in place during the man-o-war?&#8221; instead of &#8220;Can you lift your shoulder to hold me in place during that move where you and the two other guys run around in a circle and lift me and the two other girls?&#8221;</p>

<p>R Factor (or R Value) is used in the construction industry to measure thermal resistance.  Under uniform conditions, it is the ratio of the temperature difference across an insulator and the heat flow per unit area.</p>
<p><strong>More Simply Put</strong></p>
<p>Basically, the bigger the R Factor the better an insulator is at keeping the heat in your home during the winter, and the cool air conditioning in during the summer.</p>
