CABATUAN, ISABELA–White lights. Photos. Bouquets. Candles. A cross. A casket.

In the brightly-lit room, a service every night. After each, coffee, candies, nuts, soup, and biscuits. And singing onto the wee hours.

It’s the image of loss, one I did not see in this wake-slash-vacation-slash-reunion with my father’s clan up North.

Sure I saw occasional tears and reflective looks from my aunts and uncles as they gazed at the coffin. Yet with the eulogies interspersed laughter; and with the solemn songs, songs of praise. In the midst of games or stories, we would mention her–even call to her–and smile as we remember.

Our Mamang herself could smile at such a tribute.

Mamang Pilar Bagaoisan (1930-2009)

I remember her as grandmothers are–mild, quiet, and with a smile that reflected a fount of experience. She doted on the whims of 22 grandkids–usually the play of youngsters and the joking of teenagers. Like her name, she stood as a pillar of faith and silent strength to 11 children and us who followed.

For all I recall, I only regret not knowing her more as a young adult, she being the last living among my grandparents. Growing up abroad, I only saw her once a year. And when I stayed here for good, she moved to the United States to live with my aunt’s family.

She would have made a great interview subject for this journalist-to-be. I could have asked her how they survived during the war, how she dealt with the turbulent 70s, and how my dad was at my age.

Now I can’t remember having played a song especially for her, as I’ve played the night away during the wake. I wish I could have told her my own stories and dreams, as I’m now telling my relatives.
Like my cousin Marvin in the States, I could have even debated with her on which between ABS-CBN and GMA 7 was the better station.

Her children call Mamang’s passing a sacrifice somehow. She and our relations in the US and Saudi Arabia were to come here early this year for the clan reunion. They put off the trip for financial reasons.

Yet she still came back here and all of us reunited here in Cabatuan–something that might not happen again. The reasons, though, were less than jovial.

In one of those nightly singing sessions, our eldest aunt had me play the classic gospel “Because He lives” over and over. Until the singers got the harmonies right, she said.

The song spoke of the hope we had and why we were joyful while we mourned:

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow;
Because He lives, all fear is gone
Because I know He holds the future
And life is worth the living just
Because He lives.

With gratitude for her life, we know that because our Savior lives, Mamang still lives.

It tells me too that somewhere in the future, I’d get to have my interview with her.

For all those lucky enough to have taken automated academic entrance exams for college and the likes, the controversial Automated May 2010 Polls would be a breeze. However, for majority of the Filipinos, it’s gonna be like having a cellphone during the 1990’s. New. Scary.

As for the rest of us, the supposed educated voters, let’s all vote correctly. Vote based on logic and not on sheer emotions. Respect history, but don’t get stuck in the past. Vote with confidence. Vote for intelligence, competency, and experience. Move forward with Gibo!

From the time it premiered on GMA-7 last December 7, I gradually got hooked to the first-ever Christmaserye which takes its title from the popular Ariel Rivera Christmas ditty “Sana Ngayong Pasko” or roughly translated to English as “Hopefully, this Christmas.”

I don’t normally get enticed by mushy teledramas, but this one has got the right blend of drama and humor all rolled up to capture the holiday spirit while emphasizing on love, forgiveness and strong family values.

Yes, Susan Roces has already aged a lot and it shows. This is the main reason why she fits the role of Remedios to a T. She plays a married woman who abandoned her husband and children to be with the real love of her life. Decades later, she returns to the same home to re-connect and make amends with her children (and grandchildren) who either welcomed or abhored her re-appearance. The twist in the Christmaserye is that Remedios is afflicted with a disease that slowly erases her memory. She wants to gain the forgiveness of her family and spend whatever is left of her life in their company or at least before her memory of them is completely gone.

Try catching “Sana Ngayong Pasko” on GMA-7 from Mondays-to-Fridays after Full House. This is just a short series that will last till the first week of January 2010.

Tonight was the second elimination of GMA 7’s reality TV show, artista search, Star Struck V. The bottom three that was announced was Nina, Ian and Rye Burgos.

Just when you thought that Philippine showbiz wannabes are limited to just pure- or half-breeds, think again. Doors have been opened to Nippo-Brasiliero (Japanese-Brazilian) models who want to take a slice of the local TV/movie industry. In particular, there are three of them who are starting to become more visible on the boob tube and I really wouldn’t mind seeing them join the fray. In fact, they have been taking their Tagalog-speaking lessons seriously to get more projects, unlike some Fil-Ams or Fil-Euros who won’t even make decent attempts to straighten or sharpen their fluency in Tagalog.

Akihiro Sato

First on the list is Akihiro Sato who is, undoubtedly, the most successful among the three so far. He initially dabbled in modelling, appearing in commercials, endorsing various brands and even shooting his first indie movie, “Handunaman”. After signing up with GMA-7, he became part of Celebrity Duets where he reached the finals (I salute him for trying to sing in Tagalog in one of the pre-final theme nights) and began building his strong fanbase. Afterwards, he was tapped to play the male lead opposite Rufa Mae Quinto in SRO Cinemaserye’s “Moshi Moshi, I Love You” which ran for a month before landing a plum primetime role in the network’s top-rating (and ongoing) “Darna” where he plays the role of a vampire-villain named Vladimir.

Daniel Matsunaga

And then there is Daniel Matsunaga who is currently the male toast of TV commercials since he has at least 3-5 TVCs currently airing – one for a toothpaste brand, a chewtab medicine, a telecommunications company, a healthy snack food and more. He also does frequent guestings on GMA-7 and QTV-11 shows and has been seen more and more lately, especially after he was named one of the Top 10 in this year’s Cosmo Bachelor Bash alongside Akihito Sato.

Fabio Ide

Completing the troika is Fabio Ide who also wants to make his mark in local showbiz circles. Ironically, he landed on Philippine shores way ahead of Akihiro and Daniel, but only got the confidence to enter the TV industry when his compatriots started gaining ground. Just the same, it’s not too late for Fabio as GMA-7 is also giving him the opportunity to shine within the next few months.

The best thing about them is that their features are non-alienating to the Pinoy audience since they look very close to the typical Pinoy celebrity mold. Without knowing their Japanese-sounding names, you would think that they’re very local, if not imported Pinoys from the US or Europe.

As of Wednesday, December 9, 2009, DWLS 97.1 MHz FM—also known as Barangay LS from the original Campus Radio that was reformatted since February 14, 2007—has finally restored its FM stereo broadcast after it has encountered analog FM stereo encoding signal problems.

During the second year of Barangay LS in January, I heard that its FM stereo sound became defective, resulting of only right-channel, mono-like sound. The main reason is that their old, near-deteriorating analog FM radio signal amplifier, which runs its unit during its FM radio broadcast in 1976, has damaged its some circuitry parts in vacuum tube format than a modern-day transistors or ICs.

By later month between the year 2008 and 2009, DWLS FM management has decided to replace their old analog FM radio signal amplifier to a new digitally-controlled analog FM radio signal amplifier. They spend millions of pesos to upgrade their radio broadcast facility located at GMA-7 TV transmitter in Quezon City. But when they were started to run a unit to broadcast, it only airs in FM mono sound while they were finding a way to develop a software, or rather use an old software, that generates FM stereo encoding signal and “calibrate” further to ensure that it won’t occur signal problems.

As the restoration of FM radio stereo broadcast takes effect as of the aforementioned date, the remaining problem now is the sound quality in main FM signal mono mix-out, which is still gaining high-volume, mid-range tone aside from stable bass and treble sound volume coming from their audio mixer transcribing to audio satellite feed.

Expect that their analog FM radio broadcast would retain its operation until shutdown in 2015 for a migration to digital HD radio broadcast following for a migration to HDTV broadcast, as mandated by National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).

This year, the networks had it again! The never-ending network war is more alive this Christmas. ABS-CBN and GMA networks respectively aired their Christmas Station IDs last month. Thus, debates all over the internet community were spurred. Whose Station ID is better? This time, I’ll examine the station ID of both networks. I’m not a very good critic but for fun, I’ll do it. After you read this, violent reactions are allowed. So Kapamilya and/or Kapuso Fanatics, brace yourselves.

With the Station ID’s opening lines “Dumaan man sa malakas na alon, lahat tayo ay makakaahon”, the station made clear that the previous typhoons that hit the country can never struck the Filipinos down. The network did not only cast their big stars but also ordinary people who portrayed the message that when we all help each other especially those in need, nothing can destruct us.

Towards the middle of the video, one can see the networks roster of stars holding miniature parols. This is quite the usual formula of ABS-CBN station IDs in the past, and this one is not an exemption. Although it is quite annoying to see their bankable stars shown throughout the duration of the 5-minute video which completely ruined the message that it is suppose to convey, the background song made a catch-up. Upon hearing the song when I first saw the video, I instantly had a last song syndrome. Because of its catchy melody, the song is the most unforgettable element of the whole station ID. It won the hearts of many since I’m hearing different people sing this song on public places.

But as my Communication teacher would tell our class, another downfall of this station ID of the Kapamilya network is the use of the term ‘Bro’ on its tagline, “Bro, ikaw ang bida ng Pasko”. The term ‘Bro’ was derived from its top-rating primetime drama entitled ‘May Bukas Pa’. Its character, Santino uses the term ‘Bro’ not as a short term of brother but to identify God or Jesus. So the tagline literally means God is the star of Christmas. But the usage of ‘Bro’ tends to be misleading.

My rating? A passing 6 over 10. No thumb up this time.

I’m not a fan of any GMA productions. But upon seeing their station ID, I was impressed to know that the station decided not to bank on their stars. Instead, they use ordinary people who conveyed the message “Sama-sama tayong magpasalove ngayong Pasko”. This is a unique formula for a station ID but it worked for the advantage of the station. Newspaper columnists and internet critics praised the network for its good move.

Although GMA won on its unique concept, unlike ABS-CBN the downfall of the station ID is its song. Unlike ABS-CBN its song wasn’t catchy enough to capture viewers’ attention. I actually got jaded watching the duration of the video because of the song. Good videos should be paired with good songs, but this one failed because the music did not leveled-up with the video.

This time I’ll grade the two elements, video and music, separately.

So the big question of the Christmas season is this: What Christmas station ID appealed to you?

I am always amused with the constant battle between the Philippines’ two biggest TV networks – ABS-CBN and GMA-7. The competition even stretches to the production of their respective Christmas station IDs.

While ABS-CBN focused on all its contract stars appearing in the same while singing their theme of “Bro, Ikaw Ang Star ng Pasko” (Bro, You are the Star of Christmas) with each one holding a star, GMA-7 signed up unknowns to present a more dramatic unfolding of events that lead to the celebration of Christmas with the concept “Sama-Sama Tayong Mag-PasaLOVE Ngayong Pasko” (Together, Let’s Pass the Love This Christmas). Honestly, the ABS-CBN ID is more joyous and literally star-filled, but the GMA-7 production is clearly more heart-tugging and realistic in keeping up with the recent calamities that the country experienced.

I actually enjoy watching both so instead of taking sides, let’s just take each day of December with the optimism that comes with the season’s festive and love-filled spirit as shown by both station IDs.

Thank God it’s Friday! Make sure you keep doing your holiday shopping this weekend because the crowds in the malls and the flea markets will only get thicker as Christmas Day approaches.

Starstruck V is GMA-7’s successful reality artista search which has already produced a good number of showbiz personalities who continue to shine in the industry up to now. Names like Mark Herras, Jennylyn Mercado, Yasmien Kurdi, Rainier Castillo, Aljur Abrenica, Kris Bernal, LJ Reyes, Katrina Halili, Mike Tan, Ryza Cenon, Paulo Avelino, the late Marky Cielo, Megan Young and Cristine Reyes are products of the same. Now on its 5th season, it promises to be the biggest and the toughest with the Final 14 contenders already announced last Sunday. But just the same, the show gives a high premium to text-voting so you can never really tell what the results will show despite having a council of judges and mentors who score the finalists in every task.

I would be happy seeing both Ian Batherson and Nina Kodaka finishing on top because these two have the unmistakable star factor written all over their faces. Besides, both of them have good potentials in acting, dancing and singing.
