10.  Gnarls Barkley – Crazy (2006)
Quem diria que a mistura de um Dj e um Rapper não viria bem a calhar?! Apois, e com seu primeiro single Crazy, eles conseguiram o 10° lugar na lista. Crazy conseguiu ficar 10 semanas consecutivas em 1° lugar no TOP SINGLES do Reino Unido. A música é ótima, uma mistura deliciosa de POP com Jazz.

Last week we began an ambitious expedition through the best music of the past decade and I posted the albums ranked 91-100. Today we will tackle the next ten, numbers 81-90. Let me know what you think.

90. U2 – No Line on the Horizon (2009)
I’ve long been a fan of U2, but have rarely found their complete albums to be great. Even their magnum opus, The Joshua Tree, is terribly front-loaded. No Line continues their tradition of good recordings, proving to be one of their better collections overall and definitely their best since 1991’s The Joshua Tree. Some of the songs, like “Magnificent” and “Moment of Surrender,” can stand up to anything in their legendary catalog.

89. Matisyahu – Youth (2006)
An orthodox Hasidic Jew doing reggae music? Why not, this is the 2000’s. Matisyahu mixes socially conscious lyrics with danceable rhythms to produce one of the more unusual and surprising releases of the decade. The title track, “Youth,” and “King Without a Crown” are two tunes that particularly show that he could be in for a long and fruitful career.

88. Pearl Jam – Riot Act (2002)
As I’ve mentioned on many occasions in the past, I’ve long been a rabid fan of Pearl Jam and this is probably my favorite of theirs from the intervening years between No Code and Backspacer. It has a varied sound that is more akin to Vitalogy than to any of their other works, while showing the maturity of a group of men closing in on 40. The album contains jabs at corporate America and President Bush, but I think my favorite tunes are probably “I am Mine,” “Thumbing my Way,” and “Love Boat Captain.” It’s definitely a must-have for PJ fans.

87. The New Pornographers – Challengers (2007)
TNG is an indie rock supergroup of sorts made up of AC Newman, Dan Bejar (aka Destoryer), and one of my personal favorites, Neko Case. The band makes interesting music together, but I personally wish they would utilize Case more often than they do. Regardless, this album has some great songs, including “Myriad Harbor” and the title track, “Challengers.”

86. Belle & Sebastian – The Life Pursuit (2006)
Scottish band Belle & Sebastian have been carrying the indie pop banner for several years now and The Life Pursuit continues their streak of interesting and catchy music. Their sound is similar to the alternative bands of the 1980’s, such as The Smiths, just with a bit more sunshine from earlier mainstream pop. Check out songs like “The Blues Are Still Blue” and “Funny Little Frog” to get a better idea of what they are about.

85. Gnarls Barkley – St. Elsewhere (2006)
The combination of producer extraordinaire Danger Mouse and rapper Cee-Lo Green quickly proved itself to be a formidable one with their debut release, St. Elsewhere. Funky and soulful, with inescapably catchy songs like “Crazy,” the duo blew up in 2006 with this multi-platinum released and have continued to prove themselves with an innovative style that appeals to both critics and regular listeners.

84. Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest (2009)
Interesting and intelligent, the band Grizzly Bear is a critical darling of the decade for a reason. The have a real knack for bending genres, mixing electronic sounds with vocal harmonies a la Fleet Foxes and some very nice alterna-pop melodies. Catchy songs like “Two Weeks” and “While You Wait for the Others” will be stuck in your head for days. Though I had heard some of their last release, Yellow House, this was the first album of the band’s that I’ve listened to very often, so I’m looking forward to seeing what Grizzly Bear has in store for us in the future.

83. Radiohead – Hail to the Thief (2003)
Would it be considered a heresy for me to call Radiohead the Beatles of generation X? There is probably no other group who have changed music, who have camped out at the cutting edge and set themselves up as the standard-bearers of a generation, to the same extent as Thom Yorke’s band. While this politically charged album may not be among their best, it is still quite good and proves that even when not on top of their game, Radiohead is on another level than everyone else. Songs like “2+2=5” and “There There” are nearly on par with anything in their career.

82. Modest Mouse – Good News for People Who Love Bad News (2004)
I had listened to some Modest Mouse prior to the release of this album, but for whatever reason, they never truly grabbed hold of me. It was not until the catchy and anthemic song “Float On” hit the airwaves that I went back, listened, and became a fan. This breakout album for the longtime indie stalwarts is definitely a must-own for someone interested in the music of the early 2000’s.

81. Okkervil River – The Stand Ins (2008)
This hyper-literate Austin band hit paydirt with this 2008 release and its ultra-catchy “Lost Coastlines.” Though this set of recordings is supposed to be a companion piece to their 2007 release, The Stage Names, I think I actually enjoy it more. Frontman Will Sheff likes to make strange and sometimes obscure references to everything from French playwright Antonin Artaud to a 1920’s German silent film to the Gospel of Thomas, and that’s only in one song (“Singer Songwriter”). How cool is that? Seriously, check this album out if you haven’t already.

Efter att ha varit sjuk i flera dagar så börjar jag nu känna mig betydligt friskare. Med friskhet kommer energi. En annan energikälla för mig är musik. Om jag lyssnar på bra musik så kan jag inte låta bli att studsa, sjunga eller vissla med, dansa… Jag kan inte sitta still om jag lyssnar på bra musik. All kärlek åt Spotify där all världens musik finns inom ett knapptryck!  Jag är kär i livet idag. Nu när jag är på så pass bra humör så får jag passa på att kasta lite glädje på er alla andra därute i bloggosfären. Det är för mycket fokus på vem som bråkar med vem och vem som har den största bloggen. När glömde storbloggarna bort det här med att man faktiskt började blogga för att det är kul? Vi ska ha kul härute i bloggosfären! När jag, Rödräv och HimmeluntPannkaka blir inbjudna till Blog Awards nästa år så ska vi åka dit i taxi och dricka kir, varför det? FÖR ATT DET ÄR KUL!

Peace offering?

Allow me to share with you some of the music I’m digging right now… For the past month or so, I’ve been straying a bit from hip hop to reconnect with my other love, R&B. I’ve come across these three artists (well actually, 2 groups and 1 artist) through performances or recommendations from friends, and let me tell you – I’m hooked. Instant fan status…

Gotham Citi (www.gotham-citi.com; myspace.com/gothamciti)

A couple of months ago, I went to an art & fashion event called “Pop Is Dead” to show love to my boy TTK, who was showing of his work. At the event, there was a performance by a group called Gotham Citi under the guise of a “funeral,” where they sang over the body of a Michael Jackson impersonator. All I can say is that I stopped whatever I was doing, and I literally had goosebumps…that doesn’t happen to me very often, and I HAD to learn more about this uber-talented group of gentlemen.

Flip, Dijuan, Kartier and Marquel are four young men from Harlem and the Bronx who sound like a throwback to the good ol’ days of R&B groups fused with the sounds of today. Through their music, one can hear influences of Jodeci, Dru Hill, Boyz II Men, 112 and Day 26, just to name a few. They are talented vocalists, writers, musicians and producers, each with his own identity and sound but perfectly harmonious as a group. In their own words, “Gotham Citi‘s sole purpose is to maintain the integrity of music and stay true to the notion of pure, raw talent as well as adding their own unique texture to “re-set the standard” of music.“

If you’re lucky, you might find them in the subway during rush hour, singing acapella versions of both classic and original songs. After “Pop Is Dead” I can’t wait to see them perform again. In the meantime, I must content myself with the few videos available online. They released a single entitled “Daylight” (available on iTunes) that’s oh so infectious! Below you’ll find a couple of videos of Gotham Citi singing acapella, as well as one of them in the studio after recording “Daylight.”

Last month, I was invited out to Newark, NJ by Silent Knight to contribute to a photography exhibit as part of the Hub City Revival anniversary show. There, I met G. Martin, from Brooklyn by way of Gary, Indiana (yup, birthplace of Michael Jackson.), one of the featured artists of the evening. A talented singer and musician (he can play several instruments), G. Martin blew me away with his performance. After chatting with him, I happily shelled out the measly $5 he asked for his EP and have been addicted to his music ever since… His music touches an emotional nerve as he sings about love and heartbreak – a sure sign of GOOD music. My personal favorites are “Hold On Love,” “Depressions” and “You.”

So my Jersey folk (i.e. Brokn.Englsh & Deal the Villain) have been trying to put me on to Pardon the Stranger for MONTHS… I hated how their faces dropped everytime I told one of them I’d never heard any of their music. Well, a month ago, Lyriqs to Go posted the video for “Brand New Me” on Twitter and I checked it out. DUDE… GAME OVER. I love this group! Comprised of singer Kendal and producer DefDom, their music is such that you can’t quite put a label on it. “The Next Room” reminds me of Gnarls Barkley, but other songs are just straight sexy…

I finally had the opportunity to check out Pardon the Stranger when they performed at Daniel Joseph’s release show this past weekend. All the hype was for good reason – it was like I was entranced while listening to Kendal sing… I’m so glad I finally got to see for myself. Pardon the Stranger has a new fan in me!

Pardon the Stranger has an album entitled “We’re Here to Help” that’s currently available on iTunes… cop that! Peep the video for “Brand New Me” as well…

And there you have it… check out these talented artists, and let me know what you think. Just trying to shed some worthy light on the people who need it…Hopefully you’ll enjoy their music as much as I do and will become fans just like I did!

After a week of vacation and two weeks of vacation-heightened work, I’m back.

To work our way back into things, a quick music-focused post inspired by the 70 degree forecast and a fantastic DJ collective named, appropriately, Heatwave.

Heatwave’s gig is simple and impeccably executed.  They take familiar songs and re-interpret them (they call it re-fixing) through a dancehall lens.  The tropically-tinged results are imminently enjoyable and irresistably danceable.

Though it’s a bit of a stretch to break out the reggae when the temperature is still sub-70, these guys are really worth checking out and who knows how many months it will be before I could credibly write a post with any references to heat.

The first manages to bring back Gnarls Barkley’s mega-hit in a way that reminds me why the world couldn’t stop listening to this song, but also gives it a new spin that wants met to listen once again.

The second turns Mary J. Blige into a reggae superstar while maintaining the vibe of her original song

The third takes the lyrics from Pharcyde’s classic, and lays them into a reggae riddim.
