Really, who doesn’t love Gnarls Barkley? 

Admittedly, this video is a little weird, that’s why I’m posting it on a Saturday.

Gotta say, I still really dig the message. I’m sure that whether I admit it or not, I’m probably still doing the same thing.

Just watched this video for Gnarls Barkley (aka the best shit you can’t classify)
The concept is a little slow to get going but the truth makes up for any lackluster starts.

I came across this video due to a recommendation from another blogger  http://imtka.wordpress.com/. Jorma Taccone is a member of The Lonely Island, who (as I’m sure you know) make comedy sketches. This video, however, with music from Gnarls Barkley is very thought provoking and moving. It reminds the viewer of a time when they’ve experienced the pain that Taccone suffers. I don’t wanna ruin too much of the video so watch it.

WTF is a Theramin? Well, if you’ve been on or around the internet long enough, you’ve probably run into one. They’re touch-less instruments that use radio waves to create pitch and volume, and they make the sound of an alien crying. They’ve been used mostly for sound effects and to make the occasional geek feel cool, and if I know anything about geeks, that means somewhere out there someone has used one to cover the Mario theme.

Well, lets just say I was 1up-ed when I saw someone had actually hacked his SNES to play Mario with the Theramin. Fuck Wiimotes, this is where the shits at.

            The Razor Sharpe Radio Show is on the ropes.  I think I can only keep up with this thing twice a month, but that should result in more new music from different genres.

            We had two special guests on the show this week.  Obie and Laura Sullivan were gracious enough to wake up early and join me in the studio for an hour.  They are newlyweds.  Manos and I played some music at their wedding.  We played their wedding march, “All I Want Is You” by Barry Louis Polisar on the show today.

    EC was kind enough to let us use his time slot to have our program, and for that we are very grateful.

            We kicked it off with our boy Xaiver Rudd playing a mean didgeridoo on “G.B.A.”, you can even hear him gasping for air at the end.  After hearing Kevin Devine cover “American Hearts” on a live recording, I decided to pick up some A.A. Bondy at the store.  I am delighted.

            Bondy, whose real name is Augeste Arthur, recorded American Hearts in a barn in New York.  He has the most awesome voice, but plays an even better guitar.  The arrangements are quiet, but they hold your attention very well.  I couldn’t decide which song to play because there are so many good ones on the record.  You get to hear “Black Rain, Black Rain” which has a beautiful riff.

            I know that I’m late on the Gnarls Barkley train, but I finally found a used copy of St. Elsewhere and had to play two songs for you guys.  I also played a short and sweet song by Rogue Wave called “Medicine Ball.”

            I played John Legend because he gave an awesome commencement speech at the University of Pennsylvania a few weeks ago.  You should really do yourself a favor and try to find that on YouTube or something.

            Danielle is going to be on the show next time, so enjoy this week’s show.

This time its a collaboration with Gnarls Barkley. It will rip your heart out.

If you’ve watched television, listened to the radio, read the paper, talked to the animals, or looked at a calendar today, you know it’s Earth Day.  Like me, you’ve prolly forgotten all about this particular day because every day is Earth for us, right?  Well, it may surprise you to learn, given my penchant for black metal and white-hot hatred of patchouli oil, that I am a major tree-hugger and secret hippie girl.

To celebrate this most earthy of Earth Days, I’m not going to get all preachy and tell you about my favorite bus route or the cute sticker I made for my giant recycling bin.  If you want that, just turn on any TV channel right now (except for Fox News, I’d imagine) and bask in the mainstream banality of “going green.”  Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad people are talking about environmental sustainability and minimizing our impact, but this will prolly be forgotten about in a few years.

Why do I believe this?  The answer can be found in today’s story…

When I was in college the first time, Earth Day was a big deal for me.  It was my first time away from home, I really liked playing Ultimate Frisbee, I owned a pair of Birkenstock sandals (still do), and I wanted to “do something.”  So, as certainly as dawn follows dusk, I found myself at the local campus PIRG (Public Interest Research Group, a nationwide, non-profit, lobby, organization started by Ralph Nader) asking to sign up for anything.  At this point, Earth Day was a couple of months away, so we were set to work painting posters and making decorations (out of paper, lots of paper, sigh) for the big day.  We had a lot of fun that Earth Day.  We handed out flyers, listened to music and speeches, walked around with no shoes on, and tried to sign up people for whatever cause we were pushing that day.  It seemed like my fellow students were pretty open to our message and it felt like we were actually making a difference.

I quit going to meetings a couple of months after Earth Day.  School was getting to be more difficult/less interesting and I lost interest right about the time they wanted us to go out and “canvas.” For those of you that don’t know, canvassing is when you walk house to house, knock on doors, and tell people about whatever it is you came there to tell them about.  Generally, canvassing is a political enterprise, but I think registered sex offenders are required to do a bit of light canvassing in some jurisdictions…I’m sure they hate it just as much as I do.  And I hated canvassing so very much.  I think having to sell candy for school and sports when I was a kid really queered me on it.  So I got out of that relationship.

Since then, I’ve tried to do what I can for our buddy, Earth.  A few years after that Earth Day it was like everyone just sort of moved on.  I’d occasionally ask about a workplace recycling program or talk to someone (no, not in that preachy, pedantic way I talk about Hello Kitty, I’d play nice) about Earth Day and I always felt like I had just arrived from Venus…nobody had any idea what I was talking about.  Earth Day was started in 1970 and it seems to get popular again every 10 years or so.  Maybe it’s my lot as a person that’s getting older to complain about constantly repeating the mistakes of the past, but come on, you guys.

Still though, things have gotten a lot better.  Maybe all of my generation heard what we were talking about in 1990 but had to wait until they were old enough to affect policy.  And I just teared up a little bit.  God, I’m such a sucker for the good in people…and thrilling accounts of ethical policy-making.

So yeah, I hope that’s true and I hope that we can all just keep doing it for the rest of the days after Earth Day.

Two made up words spring to mind when I look at the Earth Day Symbol…blech and gnarls.  Why doesn’t anybody consult me on these sorts of problems?   I’m not usually that busy and I care, you know?  I like the ecology flag better…

So the recent slide in sales of videos is something that is both heartbreaking and frustrating for someone such as myself. I obviously chose the wrong time to get into the market of editing skate videos. I have heard from numorous sources that sales on blading videos are very low across the board and if you expect to make atleast decent money you have to have a serious reputation (i.e. something legendary like a 4×4 video or be adam johnson or lonnie gallegos)but if you are a new age editor who is trying to make a name for himself you are in for a long haul. The money is not there to be made and you have to endure the lack of sales and skepticism on the part of your fellow bladers/editors until you are able to establish yourself as a prominant producer of rolling videos. It is not only what you know but who you know. No longer can you just have sick editing or a sick line up. You need to be able to put them both together and make the package perfect…if your not haffey, broskow or farmer kids just are not interested these days and that makes things difficult. I am quite aware that the road I am traveling in the skating world isnt the smoothest one but either way I am going to travel it because it is what I really love to do. So here is a promotional edit from my recent release “TOO MUCH LOVE” which feautures Michael Garlinghouse, myself, Josh Ulrichsen, Jeff Dalnas and Jeff Howard. Take a look and have a good evening.

It was early January 2006, when a friend introduced me to Gnarls Barkley. At that time Crazy, of course was nowhere near the Billboard hit it would later become, but that infectious bass line and Cee-Lo’s soprano vocals lead me to believe that even if no one else caught on that I would always check for them.  From that day forth, Gnarls and I have coexisted peacefully.  St. Elsewhere was such a good album and The Odd Couple almost seamlessly followed course.  Who’s Going to Save My Soul is a single from the latter album.  The video, as you will see, is eccentric as all hell yet is very potent in conveying the song’s message of that one never really heals after a devastating break up.  Peep it.

The polls have closed and the only thing remaining is to verify the results. The hanging chads must be examined, the circles determined to be fully blacked out, and the ballots cast legitimized. But, the fat lady has sung.

I wish to thank each and every one of you who voted for me in the 2008 Weblog Awards. I did not win, but I also didn’t finish last. I was a category finalist, making the top ten in Best Up and Coming Blogs, and for that I am eternally grateful to all my friends for your support!

I finished my driving school and passed my test with flying colors. Well, I missed two questions, but the answer key was WRONG… I was gypped! Meh…

I’ll go to the courthouse today to finalize the paperwork and be done with this speeding ticket business for good. Hopefully I won’t get caught have to do this ever again. 

I may be getting a backbone after all. 

I stopped at the grocery store the other evening to pick up some kielbasa for dinner. As I was walking across the parking lot toward the store, obviously in the crosswalk, well in sight of the STOP sign posted for oncoming traffic, a wench decided she didn’t have to obey the traffic laws, or was illiterate… you decide.

I even put out my hands to get her attention and she kept creeping toward me. So I started yelling at her to stop… not a panic-y, high-pitched whine, but a throaty, in-your-face, don’t-make-me-hurt-you yelling. 

She had to balls to tell me to calm down before I had a heart attack. Bitch! I was having a heart attack because some asshat was trying to run over me!

I’m all better now.

I took this picture one morning while visiting my dad near Bristol, Tenn. I thought it was a hilarious shot because the gnarl looked like a mouth, with teeth. It reminds me of the apple trees in the Wizard of Oz. Okay, I am easily amused, and have a warped imagination, but you have to admit this looks funny.
