So far I did not suceed finding an online code collaboration tool for code review that is embedded in Netbeans. Except the collab plugin which requires a XMPP server (which I installed but NB not really willing to log into it and rewarding me with errors). I found another tools which is not embedded in Netbeans but an editor by itself: GOBBY (link).
It supports several team members working on the same (text) file and comes with a chat. One needs to start in host mode, so no server is required. It runs both under Windows and Linux. Unfortunately I did not manage to make the Windows version talk to a Linux host.
It still works ok for me because I can share a file (from my Netbeans project) by opening it directly in Gobby. Once the changes are made and you go back to Netbeans, the IDE will update the modified file.

Hallo,

Linux.

Windows

Console2 — open-source – Windows console window enhancement. Multiple tabs, text editor-like text selection.

h3.
#
##
###
h4. Expected result
h4. Actual result

Mozilla Firefox;EditPlus“

Windows.

Ubuntu

apt-get install …

(Collaborative Editor).

VLC media player – офигенный multimedia player и даже multimedia framework, который читает большинство audio and video formats (MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, DivX, MPEG-1, mp3, ogg, aac …) а также DVDs, Audio CDs VCDs.

WEB

Tools for Collaborative Writing of Scientific LaTeX Documents;

LaTeX and Subversion;

LaTeX Document Management with Subversion;

Version Control of LaTeX Documents with svn-multi;

Subversion and TextMate: Making collaboration easier for LaTeX users.

Gobby (roda em qualquer plataforma: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux e *NIX afins);

Digg/Reddit + arXivs;

Amazon + arXivs;

Google + arXivs;

Dessa forma, numa mesma e única plataforma estariam centralizadas as melhores e mais robustas funcionalidades disponíveis no momento — seria o paraíso!

Bom… é isso aí: a diversão é mais-do-que-garantida, []’s!

sudo apt-get install gobby

Today when updating my RSS reader I found a link to a very interesting video in Vimeo. It is a demo about the new ‘cooperation mode’ in Eclipse. I felt in love with Gobby the first time I saw it, but never found the chance of using it.

But Cola, of the Eclipse Communication Framework team, can really revolutionize what we understand for pair programming and increase the adoption of this practice.

I’ve been reading Petite Anglaise’s blog for quite a while and it has inspired me to start writing my own blog. I’m a 40 year old northern British TV actress/writer/artist/comedienne – cynics might call me a Jill of all trades, mistress of none, but at least I’m versatile.

I’ve been married for one year to a lovely man, a writer (currently unemployed as well) and we’ve got a good relationship, except that lately we’re together all the time and it’s almost like being a retired couple. To say we’ve got on each other’s nerves is an understatement. That’s what a lack of money and purpose can do to a relationship. We’ve had to exist on credit cards and it’s been really hard on both of us. He’s laid back, and I’m stressed and driven…sometimes that’s a good balance, other times it’s a nightmare when we both have different modus operandi.

I don’t want to tempt fate, but I have been an out of work actress for the last eight months, and finally there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Just a faint one, mind, but it’s there. Since I sacked my useless headgirl ‘Cheshire born but London-centric’ agent and signed up with a lovely northern pair, they have got me a meeting with a theatre company who are putting on a successful touring play about women at a pole dancing class. The part is tailor made for me – northern , gobby, brassy…yes ok, I’ve been typecast for the last few years, but maybe that’s my destiny.

Better that than factory fodder (been there, done that, don’t want to go back) or stacking shelves in a supermarket. No offence if that’s your job, but I’d hate to do that and be recognised…shades of ‘Extras’ ie Robbie out of Eastenders working in Carphone Warehouse.

So it’s given me hope, and that’s been a rare occurence lately. No guarantees, but it’s a glimmer of light…..oh to be in work!

On a couple of occasions over the past few days, I’ve had the pleasure of editing code with other #haskellers, using the collaborative text editor gobby. It was quite a lot of fun, and (somewhat surprisingly, to me at least) rather effective. It could stand a good chance of becoming one of my preferred methods for collaborative programming.

Except.

Except that gobby doesn’t support undo! It doesn’t even have a way to go “back in time” to a previous version of a document (unless you have it saved locally, of course). This is, quite plainly, a huge show-stopper, and I don’t say that just in theory: I ran into this issue head-on after only a few hours of use. I wanted to delete a bunch of double quotes, so did a search-and-replace. It was taking too long to click “replace” for each double quote character, so I clicked “replace all”, thinking it would only replace double quotes from the current location to the end of the file. Well, as you can probably guess, it deleted all the double quotes everywhere in the file. Oops. Ten minutes of tracking down missing quotes ensued, and I don’t even want to imagine what it would have been like without the help of the typechecker.

This was ten minutes of wasted time. I should have been able to just hit “undo” and get on with life.

So, why doesn’t gobby have undo? I looked at their bug tracker, and sure enough, this has been a requested feature since 2005. But it’s never been done, since undo in a collaborative-editing context is a hard problem. Apparently someone is sorta-kinda working on an implementation, that works in some cases…

A hard problem, eh? What hard problems need is good theory. Well, gee goshums! If only there was some sort of theory of concurrent editing…

So, the upshot of all of this is that I am seriously considering writing a gobby clone in Haskell with some sweet, sweet patch theory goodness. (Other killer features under possible consideration: hpaste and darcs integration, a Yi frontend, integrated compilation/error annotations, chat support that doesn’t suck…) I do have a lot more thoughts on the particulars of how this might work, but I won’t write more about the specifics here since that’s not really the point of this post.

The point is that although I said “seriously considering”, in actuality I’m not sure exactly how serious I really am. This would be a pretty big project, and I certainly couldn’t get anywhere close to pulling it off myself. I’m not even sure that I understand all of what it would require; I’d be particularly clueless about the networking and UI stuff. I just think that it would be pretty sweet, and a great application of Haskell’s strengths. Mostly at this point I’m looking for feedback. What do you think? Is this an awesome idea? Is it a stupid idea? Most importantly, would you be interested in working on it?
