Ecommerce is defined as the buying and selling of good or services on the Internet. When you have an online business of any kind you need to make sure that you have the appropriate web hosting service. Many companies will tell you that they have the right hosting packages for you. You need to be very discerning when shopping around for your ecommerce hosting. There can be hidden fees and while they may tell you that certain things are included they may not be what is really going to fit your needs so you need to ask smart questions.

This post is to help you know what to look for and to help you avoid problems down the road with your hosting. Hopefully you will think of other things to ask questions about as they pertain to your business.

SSL (Secure Socket Layer) – this is a form of encryption that will enable you to process payments and send information securely. People worldwide are nervous about giving out their private information these days and rightfully so. Identity theft is a huge problem and still on the rise. It is important to do all that you can to protect yourself, your business and your customers.

Shopping carts – not all shopping carts are equal. You may think a web hosting company is great just because it has this feature but you need to look closely. Depending on the number of products that you sell you need to see if the shopping cart supports enough items for your business. Some only handle up to 20 products or so and for a lot of ecommerce businesses this is simply not enough.

Product catalog – this is where the customer will browse through your items. You need to be sure it is easy to manage and to upload new items to. You will want it to support photos as well as good descriptions of the product. Browsing the catalog should be easy and it should integrate well with the shopping cart program that you are using.

Advertising – a business can never underestimate the power of advertising. Every business wants new customers. Many ecommerce web hosts will offer you credit to advertising sites such as Google AdWords, Facebook Ads, or Yahoo! Marketing. Make sure you take full advantage of these and if possible go with the plan and company that gives you the best credits. The best thing about these forms of advertising is that on any given day you can decide how much you want to spend on advertising. You have total control.

Support – every good web hosting company will offer very good customer support. This is a competitive industry and customer support is a key element. Your host should provide great hours that they are available along with multiple ways of contacting them. They should offer at least 99% uptime and their servers should be monitored 24/7 so that you don’t run into unnecessary downtime. They should offer a good FAQ’s database and live chat options are always nice.

Our top picks for Best Ecommerce Web Host are:

FatCow

JustHost

A quick tip for those who are hosting a Rails app (or any app really) on GoDaddy or other shared hos

A quick tip for those who are hosting a Rails app (or any app really) on GoDaddy or other shared hosting sites where the app ends up being hosted from a subdirectory, e.g.
http://www.mysite.com/my_app/
instead of just
http://www.mysite.com
.

If you only have one application and want it to be hosted from your root URL, edit your top-level .htaccess file (where you see default GoDaddy files like welcome.html and missing.html) and add something like the following:

# EDIT: added first line so GoDaddy web stats won't break!
# if the requested URL doesn't start with /stats/ or /my_app/
# then add /my_app/ to the beginning
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/stats/.*
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/my_app/.*
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /my_app/$1

If you are using Rails, you can now get rid of the relative_url_root configuration (usually in environment.rb or production.rb), so links will be generated like
/images/mypic.jpg
instead of
/my_app/images/mypic.jpg
(although both should work fine).

This probably works on other Apache-based shared hosting providers as well. I haven’t road-tested this solution completely but it’s very basic Apache stuff so there shouldn’t be any problems.

EDIT: Here’s an even better tip for those who are thinking of hosting a Rails app on GoDaddy shared hosting… don’t do it! Unless you just need a cheap site for sharing prototypes. You can get decent VPS hosting for $15/month these days–there’s no reason to have a slow site running on outdated Apache & FastCGI versions that mysteriously crashes about one out of ten page views just to save $7 a month. In GoDaddy’s defense, shared hosting is a fail concept of bygone days now that VPS technology has become so widespread and inexpensive–there’s nothing particularly wrong with their service that a few version updates wouldnt fix.

What is dedicated server hosting? For those that don’t know this is a type of hosting where yo

What is dedicated server hosting?

For those that don’t know this is a type of hosting where you do not share any part of your server with anyone else. This type of hosting is for those that need a lot of space and bandwidth with the reliability that can’t be had with shared hosting. This hosting allows webmasters to have all of the control as to the website. You don’t have to have total control but there are plans where this is the case for webmasters that do have the time and ability to control each aspect. The great thing is that most hosting companies offer you options as to how much control you need.

Why choose dedicated server hosting?

Dedicated servers can often be faster than other servers. This is because you do not have the level of traffic that a shared server does. The demands on a shared server are great and can cause it to be bogged down. This will rarely happen with a dedicated server. Dedicated servers also give you the opportunity to choose your operating system and hardware that you will use. Because of these things this is a great option for very large sites. If you get a lot of traffic and don’t want down time this is a great choice. When your site is very large and you want to better fine tune it for your visitors this is a great option because it is much more customizable.

So what are the drawbacks?

The major drawback in dedicated server hosting is the price. It can be a pretty expensive option. Basic shared hosting is very economical and you can even find some virtual private servers that are affordable but it is quite a leap to dedicated server. However, with that said, when you have the need for dedicated server hosting it is WELL worth the money. You do get what you pay for if you truly do need the control, the customizable nature and the traffic flow.

Watching someone without them knowing it is unquestionably evil.

Wow! Just saw GoDaddy deal for $15 per month for unlimited space, unlimited bandwidth, and unlimited domains. You could host hundreds of sites for $15 a month. I’ve seen some pretty good deals out there but this takes the cake. Oh wait, Host Gator is also one I’ve used and they have a similar plan for $8. I’ve been very happy with Host Gator, from reliability to support they’ve been great! Their plan comes with your own toll free number which includes 100 free minutes! Both the GoDaddy and Host Gator plan comes with a free SSL cert in case you need to have a certificate for ecommerce or other secure transactions. For a control panel I’d recommend cpanel which Host Gator provides. It’s much easier to use. The Go Daddy panel can be difficult and limited in what you can do. Both come loaded with plenty of software so you should be good to go. My favorite of course being WordPress, a great blogging platform! Both plans also come with a credit to Google Adwords in case you’d like to market your new site through pay per click advertising. Host Gator seems to be a step ahead with this one as well by offering $50 while GoDaddy offers a $25 credit. GoDaddy makes up for this though with a $25 credit to facebook (sorry facebook! wordpress wouldn’t allow me for some reason to link to you). Host Gator offers a 45 day money back guarantee while GoDaddy does not, but both are cheap and you can go month to month. Drum roll please….. dndndndndnd And the winner for the affordable web hosting award goes to HOST GATOR!! Good job Host Gator!! They also provide green web hosting that are powered and cooled by wind power in the state of Texas!! They also have a fall special so signup before Nov 1st to receive 20% off your order. And I have no affiliation with them I swear! Just a happy web hoster!

Go Daddy provides website URLS at very affordable prices. Visit their website and search for the availability of several domain names you like. Make sure to keep them short, sweet and to the point so your visitors will be able to easily remember how to get to your site.

Try to incorporate some keywords that deal with your website into the URL. Think of search engine queries that could lead people to your website. For example, if you run a business that sells cattle in Ohio, people could find you by searching “cattle in Ohio,” “cattle sales Ohio,” etc. Google gives websites an exact match bonus, meaning that is a person searched for “cattle in Ohio,” a website with the URL “cattleinohio.com” would be at the top of the search results.

One good way to find relevant keywords for your site is to use the SEO Book Keyword Tool. Use this tool to estimate traffic for certain keywords (ex: Cattle Ohio) so that you can pick a stronger domain name.

Make sure you choose a domain with a .com suffix. Most people do not have to worry about purchasing the other extensions, such as .net or .tv. The one exception is for those who think another person might purchase a similar URL and cause confusion amongst visitors

I think the time has come for home business owners to consider having an internet presence if they don’t already; and at the very least -but most important – should be a webpage. Simply put a webpage “…is a document connected to the World Wide Web and viewable by anyone connected to the internet who has a web browser….”

Couldn’t be simpler, right? It’s akin to putting up a roadside sign promoting your business. In the real world the roadside sign lets people who don’t normally travel in your neighborhood know your business exists. If the sign is a good one, the sign will tell you what the business’ name is, what the business is about [produce, auto parts, tax preparation], where the business is located [address, phone number], and when the business is open [times/days of operation].

Your webpage roadside sign can tell passersby the same information plus much more. It is the signage that introduces your business and it is the front door. The web traveler who finds your business webpage will be able to see on the “home page” all the pertinent information much as the roadside sign does, but it also invites the person into the business. Your site could be informational only, such as the example of the company for which my brother works – Delegata, or it can be its own storefront, such as the Oakland Chocolate Company.

I think one good addition to a business webpage is a blog. Again simply put, a blog is an ongoing, chronological conversation between the author and the reader. Simply put. So why have a blog on your business webpage? Some of the value points include:

Interaction with customers and prospective customers – if you allow the comments feature on the blog posts, you can get feedback from your readers; be aware some of it might be negative, but all feedback has value.

Staying engaged with your business – having a blog on your business website brings you to your site on a regular basis; I think the value to that is (a) it allows you to keep the page(s) updated and (b) lets you see what your customers and readers see…over time you may want to tweak the site for better accessibility – always remember that there is global competition out there.

Product info and product/customer stories - you can use your blog to give customers/users helpful information about the products in a fuller way than simple catalog-like listings can give. You can also relate helpful stories (the positive ones) that customers send you – sometimes a customer comes up with a unique use for a product that is worth sharing.

History of your business – people like to know the origins of a business – who started it, why and where; also, perhaps the history of the products or aspects of the products themselves. Two really good examples of this are an interesting website I found while researching ancient mosaic art, Mosaics in Greece that has a page giving the history of mosaics…it’s short and sweet; and one at the Winsor & Newton website which has quite a bit of historical information.

Added value: a blog is a great place to give your customers and prospective customers added value such as: a) ideas for use of products – this could include recipes or hints and tips; b) industry trends and other information.

There is one caution about writing a blog – be careful of making unsubstantiated claims about your products or services. A silly example: you have a home-based business selling vitamins. You are an independent distributor and have a webpage to which you added a blog. In a post you make claims for your vitamins, like they “cure” disease. Unless you can provide research data and other “official” proof, making this kind of claim can get you in hot water. My advice is to stick with the warm fuzzies about your products. Rather than making claims, tell your readers why vitamins are important. Give your readers information about nutrition and the benefits of taking care of yourself.

If you don’t have a website, you can get one at online sites such as GoDaddy.com - which by the way, has its own blog. You can design your own site or hire it done. Learning to blog just takes a bit of work. One good resource is ProBlogger.com.

A tip: once you get your business webpage established and start your blog, “Twitter” each post…it will drive more traffic to your blog and more people will learn of your business.

The Below entrepreneurship information below is an answer to the age old question – Trusting a website and Entreprenuership On-Line. Finding a real trusted website is so important on the Internet. Please read below a real answer to a real question from a real customer.

Hi France,

I would like to thank you for contacting me in regards to your question of concern.

The Internet is full of “quick money schemes” and a real danger out there in the wide world of honest people looking to make extra income on the Internet.

Please bare with me…as I explain the over-all structure and why it works as an end result…

Here is the reality of “Making Money on the Internet” :

1. It is LONG and can take as long as five years – because we are bound by google searches.

Reason : Google uses spiders to search what is popular among people searching for information on the web. Items of Information that are popular in the billions of searches get first hand at the top ten lists.

What does that mean to YOU :

It means that google will verify the “Links” that are tied to your website. It also looks very closely with all the information that your website is providing to viewers. You website you have must have at least five pages – the more pages that are “linked” to your main page is better for you. But this is not the end…it is just the beginning.

Google 2nd Requirement: You must inter-link with other websites and blogs out on the web that is related to your website. It must be related or google will “grade you accordingly”.

Google grades your website according to these items:
1. Relative Information

2. Keywords are relative to the information YOU give and are continuous on your website

3. Feedback from other websites that have similar information that is on your website.

4. NO “dead links” – very important and most entrepreneurs check out their website constantly/daily to make sure there aren’t anylinks that lead to – error pages or blank pages (if you do have a dead link – find out why and get hold of the interactive link with the person you had that link with)

5. Interactive Links that have your website link on their webpages (Very important) – But Careful Note
Here : There are websites out there that are called viral websites that encourage people to join their website for free and to earn points as a member if they click on other members websites – THESE WEBSITES ARE CONSIDERED BAD – and google will markyour website if you interact with these websites.

So – careful signing on with these free websites.

6. Google encourages interactive websites that are your own – In other words the more websites that you owe gives YOU a stronger relationship with google.

So – What Do You Do ?
1. Get a website that is cost effective to YOU and will not cost you an arm and a leg. I highly suggest you check out my website :

http://201art.com for information on go-daddy -look at my unique visitor results which is updated monthly. ( I’m thinking of placing a month to month feedback of visitors to my website -http://201art.com to show the growth of viewers to my website.

2. I highly suggest you purchase “Smart Space” (please check at http://201art.com ) which is the biggest bang for your money – and your

money purchase is very small ($60.00 CA – on yearly basis) to purchase your own interactive website.

And the best part is you get your “Domain Name” (Your personal website name) for only $1.99 – that blows everyone else away.

3. Get as many as five websites to get you started ( I presently have ten websites and growing) with their own domain names that you choose.

4. Check your competition – this is so important -see what they are saying about the same subject (information) that you are or will be providing.

5. Check out their “source” of information – look at what keywords they use and double check their keywords on your own – this means place those keywords in the google search and see what comes up on the first page of google search.

6. Never have what is called a “mirror” website. A Mirror website is one that is very close to the exact same information that you have in you original website.

7. YOU MUST ADVERTISE your website locally and internationally. Use your newspaper and on-line advertising places such as Google , Face book and Twitter. You may eventually use Yahoo and Microsoft

- but they are expensive…so use your money”intelligently”
How Do You Know when You Find a “Truthfully Website”?
This is a very good question. The best way to find out about someones website and to see if they are truthful – you must check them out yourself – and you can place this question into google search (For Example only) : Is Making Money Fast a scam -

Using “scam” in your search will pull up fake websites automatically. But – still be careful -because there are those that write on their own behave …using the term ” is such and such a scam – they are promoting their own website.

Look at the layout of the website – if it looks generic with super super guarantees – click away fast. Some other clues are those pop-ups that ask you not to leave. LEAVE AND LEAVE QUICKLY.

And – just like you have France – contact that person and ask more questions before you place your hard earned money down. But – again – be extremely careful because there are still those that are catching on and making their websites cleverly authentic.

Never be afraid to ask questions – The most obvious RED FLAG is when the owner of the website does not answer any of your questions or concerns.

Always check to see if their is a mailing address on their website and double check their address on google or yellow pages.com ( Not a good idea to give your phone number – as this leads to mass marketing scams headed directly to your phone number – use caution when giving out your website address. Make a point of having viewers contact you by e-mail – it is safer and reliable.

Even with all these precautions you still can be tricked into a “bad website”.

What Do You Do To Make Sure You Are Not Tricked?
You keep with familiar websites that you truly know in the real world - for example: Sears, Godaddy, Priceline, art.com , Macy’s, Walmart, camping.com,NOVICA Handmade Jewelry – in association with National Geographic, mozy.com, weight watchers,Chapters.ca or .com, Indigo and so on.

The idea here is to use companies that you are know in thereal world and have used before.

How Does this help my website?

Having associates with real large corporate companies means viewers are more likely to trust your website.

Reason: The large corporate companies will only pick you as an associate with their company if you are a “Real Trueful” Company. When YOU want to become an affiliate with their company – they check out YOU very closely. If they find you are an impropriate and a danger to their company – they will reject your website.

So – if you see a personal website that use corporate websites as an affiliate – you know you are finding a good website. But still check them out – ask questions and get the right answer before you put your money down.

Another Safe Suggestion:

If a website uses Paypal as their secure shoppingcart procedure – you know you are safe.

How?

Paypal holds all purchases to make sure that the viewer is satisfied with their purchase. Not only

that – they are extremely secured within the transactions and you can complain if you find your purchase has not meant your means. This means Paypal is protecting you from the bad guy. This is why if you see a business that promotes Paypal – itmeans the company you are making the purchase from is serious about how YOU are about their products or service.

The Bottom Line – If it sounds too good to be true – It usually is.

Use caution and keep answering questions and make sure they answer your questions – VERY IMPORTANT

So – How Do I get my website noticed on the wide world of web?

1. Advertise as stated above

2. Have a least five websites if not more – the more the better for you as a trusted website

3. Become a partner with cj.com and ask to become an affiliate with large corporate companies

4. Keep your website current – Up to Date is so so important

5. Also – advertise yourself by going social – as in Face book and Twitter – You can follow me at @artolympics2010

6. When socializing in Twitter and Face book – do not spam your viewers – you can only give them

information – your viewer must make their own decision to go to your website or not.

And Lastly :

You may find these tasks overwhelming to keep up to- but never get discouraged – as an Entrepreneurwill tell – keep plugging along – “no” is never in your vocabulary. And never ever listen to yourfriends – most friends will tell you not to pursue your “dreams” – always keep in mind what they are doing in their life’s – Are they successful – that is the key – are they successful.

Working for corporate companies in the real world -such as Mary Kay can be beneficial for YOU as

personal achievement and to your success. But, the reality of being a entrepreneur is that you must

interact with people and never ever get discouraged.

In Conclusion – it is a LONG ROAD to success, but in the end, it is very very rewarding.

Thank you,
Mr. Bari Demers
http://201art.com
Hi there,

Serious blogger will say it’s a try, some will just

dismiss it – it make you wonder if they really

tried.

I’m serious about earning extra money ( I’m looking

to buy a house ) I don’t need that extra money to

buy it but I’m looking for a little extra income.

I’ve joined Mary Kay (and I don’t care for beauty

products lol) which is ok but I still need to get

out of my house and with my present work I don’t

spend a lot of my time at home and would like to

start doing just that a little more.

I’m a workaholic but I just reach a step where I

need more time for myself.

”So – what happens is that it grows slowly. And

the money is real hard cash… any questions?

contact me at info@201art.com – I will love to help

those that seriously want an income with the real

cash. ”

I don’t mind if it grows slowly. I’m just wondering

if I’ll spend the money for nothing and If I REALLY

need to spend that amount of money each month to

learn how to do it.

I did try some stuff from online publicity. I

always ended up spending money and not having

returns on it.

Any personal feedback would be more than welcome.

Thanks for your generosity.
France

Intro After a friend call me today and ask me to assist them to register their domain name, I’

Intro

After a friend call me today and ask me to assist them to register their domain name, I’ve decided to write a post and tell you exactly how you can register your own domain name in a few minutes.
Well in South Africa you can easily pay between R150 to R200 to register your .co.za name, by using other companies. If you do it yourself, you pay only R50.00.

Take Note: If you are an eligble Non-Profit organisation in South Africa, you do not need to pay for domain name. It’s for FREE!

Step 1- Check if your domain name is available.

For Non-Profit Organisations – .za.net or .za.org

Check if your domain name is available here.

Type YourDomainName.za.net or YourDomainName.za.org in the provided text box.

Press Enter.

For .co.za domain names.

Check if your domain name is available here.

Type in the domain name in the text box.

Click Enter.

Step 2 – Obtain DNS Nameserver’s name and IP Addresses

You need a minimum of two independant DNS Nameserver names and IP Addresses.

Use your hosting company

Obtain information from your Web hosting company.

Note: You need to add your domain name at your host company as a domain or add-on domain before you can proceed.

Use EveryDNS

Login or Signup at EveryDNS.

For New users: Just choose an username, enter your e-mail address, and passwords for EveryDNS, and click Signup.

Enter domain name under Add new domian:(basic) e.g. yourdomainname.co.za or yourdomainname.za.org

Click the >>(basic) button.

Your domainname.co.za should appear now under the Primary Domains

EveryDNS Domain Name Server Details:
Domain Name Server 1: ns1.everydns.net IP Address: 208.76.62.100
Domain Name Server 2: ns2.everydns.net IP Address: 78.129.207.168
Domain Name Server 3: ns3.everydns.net IP Address: 208.76.63.100
Domain Name Server 4: ns4.everydns.net IP Address: 208.76.60.100

See note how to update EveryDNS with your Web Hosting details.

Step 3 – Register your domain name

For Non-Profit organisations – .za.net or .za.org

Read the ZA Nic Policy for Domain Registrations carefully.

If you do agree with the terms, follow these steps:
Fill in the Registration Form.
It is pretty straight forward.

At the Technical Information section you will fill in your Domain Name Servers
You must fill in at least 2 names.
Name1: Domain Name Server 1
IP1: IP Address for Domain Name Server 1
Name2: Domain Name Server 2
IP2: IP Address for Domain Name Server 2

Double check that the information is filled in accurately.

If you do agree with ZA Nic Policy for Domain Registrations click Submit.

If there are any errors resulting from the submission of your request, ZA Nic will reply to you by e-mail. Follow the steps again until your request is accepted.

It can take a few days before you will get a reply from ZA Nic. You can always check on the Status Page for where your request lies in the queue.

For .co.za Registrations

Read the terms and conditions carefully. If you agree continue to the next step.

Download the application form here.

Open this document in your favourite text editor and complete the details.

Record Value: YourDomainName.co.za

Click Add.

Conclusion

Well, in a few easy steps you can register your domain name yourself.
Since I prefer to have total control over the DNS Settings, I prefer to use EveryDNS for local (South African) domains.
For .com domains I prefer to use GoDaddy. It costs $10.69USD or lower.

I hadn’t dealt with GoDaddy web hosting for at least four years until today, when I got into it working on a project that I’m getting paid (barely) for.
So, uneducated user, here a few reasons why you should do your research and not jump in bed with whomever has the most intriguing ads on TV.
- Setup Lag: I don’t get this one, but almost everything you do on the hosting account requires administrator approval. So, when you’re looking to move forward with your project, you’re often stuck waiting for someone to approve it while your hosting thing just says “Pending.” I experienced with not only adding an FTP account and MySQL database, but also editing that FTP account.
- MySQL: Wow, where do I start. There are a lot of privileges that you just don’t have. ALTER DATABASE doesn’t work, even though you own the database (maybe for disk space reasons?) and you’re not allowed to add user accounts. Plus, when you initially create a database, your username will be used to name the database. Nothing on the UI stated this, so I ended up with a database called “sqlins.” Awesome…
- Your root folder is the public_html folder. Why is that important? Well, in programs, it’s often advantageous, for security reasons, to store scripts in a directory that’s not accessible to the public. But, with GoDaddy, all of your directories are publicly accessible.
- No Configuration: GoDaddy does not support .htaccess (even though it runs Linux/Apache servers) or directory-level php.ini. In fact, I can’t find where they allow php.ini configuration at all, so you’re stuck with whatever they give you that’s not editable by ini_set().
But maybe that’s too complex for the people who generally utilize this particuar GoDaddy service.
I get this anger and frustration mostly from an ad that’s running on TV now, that advertises Intuit web hosting (which I didn’t even know that they did). Wag of the finger fucking shame on them for advertising web hosting as if this is the all-inclusive “market your business on the interweb” package that you need to grow your business. Fuck that lie. I’ve dealt with too many people who expect magic on the internet and don’t understand how things out there work. I would have thought that, in the 10+ years the internet has been ingrained in pop culture, that people would figured things out a bit more, but I guess I’m wrong.
Damn…

Domain and Web Hosting - Paid vs. Free

Free web hosting… Some web hosts offer free hosting services but with limited space, limited choice

Free web hosting…

Some web hosts offer free hosting services but with limited space, limited choice on naming your URL, to be truthful there are many limitations to customers who don’t want to pay for hosting.

This holds many risks and insecurity for the following reasons:

The Host may at any time close your account for any or no reason.

The Host could decide to change all the free accounts into paid accounts at any time.

Your site would also have limited visibility, and therefore be much harder to market your products or services.

As well as these problems mentioned above the host may add ads to your pages. They will make money off these ads and you on the other hand will not. You may not even want ads on your site at all, and some of the ads may be offensive to your visitors! With free hosting you would have very limited if any control over the type of ads on your free hosted website.

If you want a site mainly for family & friends to be able to check out photos or a way to stay in-touch free hosting maybe the way to go.

Paid web hosting…

With paid hosting you have so many option and 100% control of all content on your site.

You will also be able to create the domain name / URL of your choice.

Say you have a free plan the URL might look something like this

http://www.mycatblog.at_freehosting_site.com or http://www.freehosting_site.com/mycatblog.html

With owning your own domain name it will be 100% yours! When choosing your domain name consider something easy to remember and catchy that’s a great way to go on getting visitors back to your site.

So a paid domain name would look something like this

http://mycatblog.com or http://www.mycatblog.com

You can also pick rather you want a .com, .biz, .info, .me there are many to choose from each ranging in different prices. Or if you want to really protect your domain name many people buy them all (.com, .biz, .info, .me)

I have my sites hosted through Godaddy so I’ll give you some ideas on the prices and cost of hosting.

Here’s an image of the prices for domain hosting at Godaddy.com.

They have 3 packages Economy (3 month at $4.99 a month), Deluxe (1 month at $6.99 a month), and Unlimited (1 month at 14.99 a month).

As you can see in the image above each hosting has set limits on disk space, email accounts, and MySQL databases. I myself tend to stick with the deluxe plan it suites my needs and is very cost effective. It also has a few more perks than the economy plan.

Now with buying your domain hosting you get a HUGE discount on the purchase of your domain name (your URL address) if you were to purchase just the domain name it would run you $10.69, if you have a domain name you have already purchased it would cost $6.99 for .com transfers, if you get a hosting plan your domain name would cost $1.99 for 1 year.

So say you decide on getting the deluxe hosting plan and your domain name for 1 full year that would be a total of $81.67 (before tax) Not a bad deal if you are looking for a site and services for a business website. Also Godaddy offers application that can be installed on your site with a click of a button depending upon what type of hosting you have rather it is Linux hosting or Windows hosting.

So a run down of why you may want to get a paid hosting plan rather than a free one.

100% control over your domain

That means you would have what is called top level access to your files and the content being placed on your site.

If you choose to run ads you make 100% of the profit, you control what type of ads run and when and how (Google ads, or Click bank is just a couple that come to mind)

You can set your site to be seen easier on the web, with 100% control of Meta tags.

If you wanted to be able to track your visit, and be able to see which content is generating more traffic you can do so, it’s much easier to implement tools into your site when you own it.

Also you’ll have control over how much interaction your visitors have when viewing your site (rather they need to sign up to see the content… if the sign up is free or paid, if anonymous visitors can post reply’s to topic’s or not and so on)

Upcoming Topic’s…

I’ll be making more post on this type of topic in the near future. Some topic’s I want to touch on will be…

What type of Hosting Linux or Windows and what’s the difference between the two?

I’ll also be going over some aspects of Google and how that can help your site and your business in general.

So check back soon for more information on the above topic’s mentioned.

Also if you know of a hosting plan that you have used in the past and would like to mention that as an option please do. All input is welcomed.

Thanks for checking out this post.

Reposted from www.socialgastronomy.com

I have used www.godaddy.com for my web hosting for probably close to 5 years or so. I would say that I am a loyal customer as I have half a dozen domains with Social Gastronomy’s website and email hosting being there, as well.

So, if I am UPSET enough to write a blog post to describe the poor customer experience as a case study of what NOT to do, you can understand the magnitude. Comparably, my wife call the president’s office of a our national bank office when they charged us unnecessary fees from the way that they do their deposit accounting practices.

If you are reading this as of thursday morning, I have been without my social gastronomy email for 22 hours. I don’t mean that I can’t access it, I mean that if you email me, you get a bounce back. The rest of the team can get email so feel free to email them, but I can’t get GoDaddy to fix the problem.

It started with our desire to upgrade our email from GoDaddy’s standard POP email account to the hosted exchange service. We were trying to coordinate calendars virtually which was killing our productivity. Ironic…

We signed up for the product and found out that it woudl take 2 hours to port the MX record over from one product to another. Called customer service and they did it manually. Score one for GoDaddy. Very polite person. Score two.

However, I had a problem with how I set up my particular account, you had to use a weird naming convention till you could port the domain record over. Ok, did it. Didn’t work so she suggested that we delete the particular mailbox. Ever have that “I don’t think this sounds right moment”. It got stuck. She did some checking and found out that we had to delete our mailboxes on the old plan before starting the new one. Ok, that was inconvenient, but was quick. She does email me the instructions for getting outlook to work. Good job.

All of them worked, but mine. She tells me that it takes time for some accounts to populate with the new MX record. Now, having been involved with the web for 15 years as a product manager, marketer, etc.; this doesn’t sound right if all but the one account that was different now doesn’t work. Well, then I do some testing and find out that my particular mailbox is now bouncing emails. She tells me to call back in a couple of hours after the record populates. Then sends me a customer service “how did we do” survey.

Ok, so now I have no email, no plan to fix email, and a nagging feeling of panicked “My email is boucing”. So, I call back in to find someone else. Explain the situation. She tells me that if one works then the others work. So the first person was wrong in telling me to delete AND doesn’t understand how they manage MX records.Cool. However, she can’t access my email address and since I am in a car, I have to call back in after my next meeting.

I get home from my meetings and call again. I explain the situation to the 3rd customer service person that I have now talked with about my lack of email. He agrees with me that this is a problem. He then does some checking and confirms that the reason that I can’t re-add my email account is that it is hung up in the deletion process on the server. He needs to open an escalation ticket to get it resolved. Great! We are making progress….

It will take 24 to 72 hours to resolve. In the meantime, “why don’t you create another email address with a variation of your name…” I explain in a panicked voice that I have all of my business cards and contacts who use this email address and need this escalated faster. “Can’t do it, Sir.” He does very politely send me trouble ticket email.

So 15 hours later…. I call back in to find out how I get email back. I get another customer service rep. No help. I ask to escalate to the group as he doesn’t have access to their work queue. Tells me that it is 24-72 hours. I ask for his supervisor, who he grudgingly connects. Now at Customer Service Rep #5. Who proceeds to tell me can’t help, can’t escalate, can’t provide information, can’t see the queue, and since it is in Arizona, no one is in the office to work on it (implied), but he can’t tell me that information for security reasons.

Beyond Being Angry, What do I Know about What is Going on?

1. Unfortunately, this is pretty common for customer experience across many industries and size companies

2. It is fixable. AND they need to fix it as it a real indicator of potential business issues. If I didn’t think it was fixable, this would be a twitter post on why this company SUX and why I am never using them again… etc. I don’t think that they are bad, just that they have mediocre customer service and antequated support systems. There is a better way.

3. When a loyal customer starts to consider moving their accounts because of poor customer support, ineffective systems, and slow response times; you have a problem. It takes 2 hours to move a MX record (switch providers), but it takes 72 hours to fix a problems. You have a problem…..

4. If your call center systems and processes are designed to shield your employees and not allow access to people who can actually address customer problems, you have a bigger problem….

5. This is why customers are taking to social media, blogs, etc. to vent and to CIRCUMVENT your antequated customer service infrastructure. Either I get help from someone who actually knows what they are doing OR I am venting because I get the standard call-center “I understand, but don’t really care” response.

6. This is a major concern for a lot of organizations; Customer Service who gets managed against customer ratings, Sales which loses opportunities, Marketing which loses ability to influence the narrative on the company, and the CEO who gets hammered on the web everytime a pissed off customer vents about their poor service.

How does this relate to Social Media?

1. I am actually using this to see if they are monitoring social media and twitter to see if they will respond to a public complaint as I am stymied within their call center.

2. I found 523 GoDaddy current employees near their corporate headquarters on Linkedin; including their CTO…

 3. 56,400 hits for “I hate godaddy” on Google

4. GoDaddy Sucks has 64 members on Facebook, GoDaddy had 65 members.

5. Do a search on Twitter for GoDaddy, this is what you find…

6.The first 2 pages of search on godaddy is standard corporate messaging from GoDaddy. If I were a new customers, I would discount this messaging and look for the real scoop. Hence a search on twitter, facebook, and linkedin. If I was really interested, I would go to the more technical social media platforms for technical discussions, etc.

7. I am annoyed more than angry, but I want my email account fixed AND I want to see that I can get better attention due to my urgency. Going into the blackhole of customer service is not going to be acceptable as consumers become more adept at researching providers on social media sites to understand the real scoop. Providers will have to become more responsive and understand that a pissed off customer doesn’t just tell 10 people anymore, they tell EVERYONE….

8. I am posting this at 10AM, now down almost 24 hours. Let’s see if they are paying attention. I will update when I hear back and what form they communicate.

One last point, this blog post is hosted on GoDaddy…

In the meantime, you can reach me on twitter: www.twitter.com/mmrosenhaft

4:30PM Update: I got a canned email that my problem is fixed. Obviously, GoDaddy is not monitoring social media otherwise they would have responded to my blog post, tweet, linkedin or facebook status updates.

Selecting the incorrect internet host can be disastrous if you’re looking to setup an online b

Selecting the incorrect internet host can be disastrous if you’re looking to setup an online business. Your online business is supposed to be online 24/7. If your host goes down for some reason, that implies you aren’t earning any revenues. The question is, can you afford to have your host go down? How much cash will you be losing if that happens?

to stop potential loss of income, the smartest thing to do is to select a reliable website host from the start. Here is what usually occurs when someone selects a web host.

1 ) They read reviews online .

2 ) They try the pricing.

3 ) They check out server specs.

4 ) ultimately, they compare package features, specs and pricing before making a commitment.

however [*COMMA] note that such information is only negligible. In other words, you can not really tell how reliable a hosting company is based on such information alone. Given two servers with the same directions and pricing, how does one choose? The reliability of the service then relies on the skill level of the IT professionals.

A hosting company with competent IT execs behind it’ll always plan ahead. Critical software and patches are always installed on time to prevent future Problems. Upkeep and upgrades are done on a regular basis to reduce down time. Keeping the servers online will be the emphasis of the hosting provider.

in many instances, Problems tend to arise in the shared hosting environment. In such an environment, hundreds of buyers could be hosting thousands of sites on a single server. The challenge is to keep the server running in an acceptable condition even with the huge number of sites hosted on it.

For sites that consume minimal resources, that should not be too big of a problem. [**] some website owners install scripts that consume massive amounts of resources – and they do not even know it! To make things worse, some scripts are automated and they create extra scripts that hog resources on the servers. It’s only a matter of time the server goes under.

fortunately , the hosting industry has evolved to a stable stage. Many smaller companies who have not managed to overcome these challenges have gone belly up. These are firms that lacked the technical skills to deal with the technical demands of running a hosting provider.

The more professional hosting corporations have developed highly sophisticated software that deal in particular with such Problems. As an example, checks are ran on a constant basis to work out if there are any customers abusing their hosting accounts with too many unnecessary files. Customers who are hogging too much resources are then asked to take action to cut back the server load. Otherwise, their account may be temporarily postponed.

if you are in a rush, ask around in hosting forums to determine which are the more reliable corporations. Spend some time reading what others say about their experiences about assorted firms.

finally, before you make a purchase for any hosting package, make sure you source for discount codes. These are chit codes that are normally available in hosting review sites. Before checking out, you will be prompted for the coupon code. Just enter the coupon and enjoy a discounted rate for your hosting.
