Okay Dave, I got the hint brother. Indeed it is past time for some scribblings…

First off, I am doing a lot better. A couple of weeks now removed from the hospital and well into my outpatient therapy. Thank God none of that involves any IV’s, tubes, wires, and breathing treatments.

All in all I couldn’t be happier with the way the VA and my many providers have and continue to be there, I seemed to of lucked out and have a ‘dream team’ of folks helping me help myself. A good solid treatment plan is in place, peer support, a lot of hand shaking and smiles. I have crossed over to the other side.

My ‘miracles’ are happening now, with the good Lord delivering on all the prayers that have been and continue to be said. That I have no doubt, and I am thankful. Thankful for a second chance at life, you my friends, my family and the starting lineup of top notch providers I’ve been blessed with that have gone to battle with me to provide the effective tools necessary to continue ridding myself of all those haunting demons that nearly defeated me, better known as combat PTSD.

I am in control, no longer is THAT going to control me. It’s about attitude. Improvising, adapting, and certainly overcoming. I still have my daily struggles, but everyday seems to be easier than the day before.

Purpose; I have one.  My goal, or the objective, is to get involved with peer support myself in the not so distant future. To have a ‘positive’ impact as it relates to the recovery of fellow veterans with similar combat related issues as I, but not necessarily limited too only that.

The purpose of the peer support program being:

1. To provide opportunities for veterans to take control of their ‘own’ recovery.

2. To teach and support the learning of skills needed to facilitate one’s recovery.

3. To make veterans aware of available services and choices.

4. To help veterans develop a sense of wellness and self worth.

5. To bring a unique perspective to the treatment teams on which they work.

And that’s what this blog is about as it relates to what I’m looking forward to posting. PTSD awareness, treatment, and HOPE! There is another side, where the grass does grow greener. My postings on the topic will increase here as I continue to get my marbles re-issued and lined up correctly lol. More importantly ‘keeping’ that brain housing group of mine dripping with CLP.

The ongoing adding of links and such to the sidebar that [ hopefully ] can and will be resourceful to anyone that either knows of someone, or someone, that is struggling with it themselves. It has become a cause for myself.

We all need serenity.

For me that proverbial wheel of wellness is turning again. Its been like a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle that are all finally falling into place. Gods miracles are amazing, and I have no shortage of faith in him.

Lastly, a very special gift. A very special woman that has came into my life. Shes absolutely wonderful and has taken great interest in all this and me. I guess one womans ‘junk’ can be another woman’s treasure lol.

All joking aside, she’s been nothing short of amazing in understanding, allowing me to talk, offering to participate in my counseling sessions etc. She runs to the store, gets my groceries, breakfast, med reminders, bandaging my foot that has me temporarily semi crippled. She works in an E.R., so, nursing me back to health kinda comes natural to her.

For ‘her’, I am grateful. Pretty too.

A lot of great chemistry there.

It was one of the best Thanksgivings for me, with my new girlfriend given the stamp of approval. Meeting my family and having dinner with all of them.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend and had a great Thanksgiving as well. Again; and in my prayers, I am thankful for all of you that have been, and continue to be, so supportive.

Tony Rombola, American guitarist (Godsmack)

When it comes to songs I don’t know which type of songs I like but I am very selective. I may like some songs of the bands but not all. Linkin Park is my favorite band and the band’s lead singer Chester Bennington is my favorite  singer.

Linkin Park

No need of any introduction for this rock band as everyone is aware of their best songs. But still for those unfortunates who don’t know….. Well “They are the best in the business”! Linkin Park is an American metal band. It was formed in 1996. Nu metal and rap are the band’s genres. Their debut album Hybrid Theory was a big success selling more than 4million copies. Well that was enough for a big fan base and moreover their following albums also got the same attention. Till now Hybrid Theory, Meteora and Minutes to midnight are the albums named to their fame and hard work and superb songs. They have won American Music Awards, Grammy Awards, MTV Asia Awards, and much more. The band members are Chester Bennington – vocals, rhythm guitar, Mike Shinoda – vocals, rhythm guitar, samples, keyboards, Brad Delson – lead guitar, backing vocals, Dave “Phoenix” Farrell – bass guitar, backing vocal, Rob Bourdon – drums, percussion, backing vocals, Mr. Hahn – turntables, programming, samples, backing vocals. I like many of their songs but these are the most which I like:

numb, crawling, somewhere I belong, in the end, place for my head, breaking the habit, points of authority.

Skillet

Skillet is a rock band which was formed in 1996. Band members: John Cooper – lead vocalist, bassist, his wife Korey Cooper – rhythm guitarist, keyboardist, vocalist, Ben Kasica – lead guitarist, and Jen Ledger – drummer, vocalist. Skillet, Hey You, I Love Your Soul, Invincible, Ardent Worship, Alien Youth, Collide, Comatose, and Awake are the albums till date. I like their guitar work and moreover John Cooper’s voice also impressed me. The band was also nominated for two Grammy Awards. Hard rock, industrial rock, and symphonic rock are the genres of the band. My personal best are:

Godsmack

Godsmack is an American heavy metal band formed in 1995.Band members: Sully Erna (founder and songwriter), Tony Rombola (guitarist), Robbie Merrill (bassist), and Shannon Larkin (drummer). Godsmack, Awake, Faceless, The Other Side, IV, Good Times, Bad Times…Ten Years of Godsmack. Godsmack has been nominated for four Grammy Awards. Alternative metal, heavy metal, nu metal post-grunge, rock are their genres. Faceless and IV were two consecutive #1 albums on the Billboard 200. I love their style of making and executing songs, though I only like their two songs: I stand alone and Straight out of line.

Besides the songs of these bands, I also like the song of Greenday – (Boulevard of broken dreams), Oasis – (Wonderwall), Blue – (One love), Enigma – (Sadness,Gravity of love), A perfect circle – (Rose).

I am a huge Godsmack fan.  If you hate them or love them, that is fine with me.  But I have been waiting for this new album for over a year now.  In August of 2008, I sawSully in an acoustic show.  That night he talked about a hard rocking kick ass album that should be out in January of 2009.  Well, it is almost January of 2010 and now they say it will be around March before the album is released.  All I have to say is… about damn time.

The superstition that there is bad luck associated with Fridays that fall on the 13^th day of the month will provide for an interesting atmosphere surrounding The Battle of the Bands happening this Friday…the 13^th, at The Hess Rec Center. Work, Paper Scissors, Eating for Two, Something Evil and 12-Year Stretch will compete for bragging rights and a cash prize of 250 big ones. Attendance of the event is open to everyone so you don’t have to be university student to attend, though if you arrive on a steel horse with a six string on your back you will be immediately and forcefully escorted from the premises. Tickets are three dollars for UAF students or seven dollars otherwise. The Battle begins at 7pm sharp so be sure to get there ASAP and pour your heart out for your favorite. A good band knows (and shows) that their efforts day in and out are for your delight at the end of the week. The Battle of the Bands is about bragging rights, but it’s also a chance for the fans to show their love in a tangible way. Good luck to all! For more information check Facebook.

Though this is usually an informational blog I’m going to digress from that and share with you the sad, pitiful and thus, funny story about my band (Paper Scissors)’s first Battle of the Bands experience.

It’s the summer of 2006, and Godsmack is scheduled to play at the Carlson Center in a few weeks. They decide they would like to have a local opener and so, get in touch with a venue, the now defunct Hide Out Lounge, and asked them to organize a Battle of the Bands, the winner of which would be selected to open the show. The obvious question here should be a resounding, why? I fully agree that the musical prowess and integrity of Godsmack is at best debatable, but at least it wasn’t you-know-who. Regardless of our feelings towards Godsmack we were a brand new band with no credibility, but we were proud of our work and grabbed immediately at the chance to play anywhere that would let us. Not to mention the hilarity value in the assuredly dumbfounded looks on Godsmack’s collective face were we to win. A few days before the show I attended a meeting of the participating musicians to hash out logistics. The host of the meeting (and the event) asked, very seriously, that any bands who weren’t seriously intending to compete for the prize please resign themselves from the competition. It hadn’t escaped me that I was the only person wearing at least one piece of clothing that wasn’t black, and it seemed that that question may very have been meant specifically for Paper Scissors. I said nothing. I guess we weren’t exactly sure how serious we were but we can be a stubborn, if not proud bunch and were definitely not backing out. The day came and we showed up pumped and ready to rock a million faces. However,  we got the hard rusty shaft instead and were scheduled to play last, immediately after Turbid North who, both in hindsight, and at the time were the obvious choice for winner. That same shaft was given a nice sharp twist when all of the bands, especially Turbid North, went long, and so by the time we were up, we had something like 12 minutes to set-up and play before the event (which was outside) had to shutdown because of noise regulations. We set up with the quickness and jumped right into it, but we weren’t quick enough. What was a packed house emptied twice as fast as we could set up. We played for one person (I counted). The icing? Before we could start our second song we were politely asked by an officer with the Fairbanks police to “shut it down.”  There aren’t any places other than first in a Battle of the Bands, but I can assure we came in last.

One of my favorite bands of all time is Fuel.  Most people probably know their song “Shimmer” but they have had multiple hit records since then.  A couple years ago the band lost its front man Brett Scallions and drummer Kevin Miller, but picked up some incredible replacements.  The new singer Toryn Green was discovered in an open audition that the band held and is an awesome replacement.  Tommy Stewart, the new drummer, is also a strong replacement having come from a little band known as Godsmack, which of course is complete sarcasm and they are in fact a very well known and high earning band.

In the past couple years the band has released a record, toured, and has since not been heard from.  Certain contract negotiations have hindered them making new music and even their website is lacking its usual updates for fans.

So as a loyal Fuel fan, I have to ask, pleeeeeeeeeeease when will there be new music?

Fastnat för Godsmack ordentligt igen Precis rätt röst, rätt musik och rätt texter! Kan det bli bättre? Kanske är en rock-chick längst in i själen ändå? Funderar rätt mycket på det där, alltså vem man är egentligen? Ibland känner jag mig som en rock-chick, vissa dagar som att kläder är allt jag bryr mig om och andra som om jag helt enkelt inte bryr mig. Känner mig lite lost. Eller om man ska se det som Alina sa till mig, det är väl bra att man kan passa in överallt? Seguramente muchos no conocerán a ésta banda de Massachussets, puesto que no se trata de las típicas bandas mundialmente reconocidas, aunque cabe la posibilidad que alguien haya escuchado ya ésta canción, puesto que fue incluída como banda sonora de uno de los juegos de Prince of Persia.

Su estilo lo podríamos encuadernar como rock-metal alternativo, aunque hay quienes les definen como ñu-metal (yo creo que el sonido de Godsmack se aleja bastante del de bandas como Limp Bizkit, Korn, etc. pero es cuestión de encuadernar en algún lado).

Godsmack

After getting home at 1am last night, I did not have the energy to get up and run.

But that changed when I got on the scale at work today.  As I expected, missing a run, having drinks and bread at dinner for three nights, and eating almost an entire reuben from the Carnegie deli took their toll.

Yuk.

So I knew that no matter what, I would need to run tonight.  When I got home, it was above 85 degrees, and about 210% humidity.  But I strapped on my gear and headed out to do my 3 miles.

And my body told me just how bad a boy I have been.  I was immediately at 165 HR and by the turn, I had to walk.  I actually ended up stopping three times, not for heart rate, but for chest and breathing pain.  I had always assumed that these problems were heart rate related, but apparently not.

In any case, I finished in just under 33 minutes.  Not optimal, but it will do.  Now, when I sit down to watch the Nebraska Cornhuskers declaw the Missouri Tigers on ESPN tonight, I will be able to do it knowing that I did the right thing today.

One thing I should note, I am definitely back on track as far as nutrition goes today.  Protein shake for breakfast and lunch, with unsalted peanuts for snacks.  I had a lot of water, and even was good at dinner: roasted chicken, no skin, salad with light dressing, carrots, and broccoli… and of course water to drink.

I’m even going to be good during the game.  The snack? Red Peppers to dip in home made hummus.  I just got done making the hummus.  It’s going to set for an hour, and then it will be perfect.  Now all I need is for a Husker win tonight.

Since 1981, Mötley Crüe has been cranking out hard rock and metal music to rabid fans around the world. Now, twenty-eight years later, the Crüe is still banging heads with the best of them. They released a new album and have put together a music festival, modestly named after themselves, with a lineup of some of today’s best and brightest rock musicians. I was lucky enough to catch Crüefest 2 last week and I was not disappointed. Let me take you on a tour of the White Trash Circus:

Crüefest 2 consisted of five bands on the main stage: Charm City Devils, Drowning Pool, Theory of a Deadman, Godsmack and, of course, Mötley Crüe headlining the event. There was also a second stage featuring some good, up-and-coming bands. I checked out a band called Schram, out of Detroit. These guys put on a good show. They had a ton of energy and seemed genuinely happy to get out on stage and play. I also caught a band called Silver Stone, out of Arkansas. They also put on a really good show. The singer was good and the guitar player shredded some pretty killer riffs. They also had a third band on the second stage, but I only caught a few of their tunes. Okay, okay, so I was waiting in the beer line and didn’t get over there in time. What? I was thirsty! Thankfully, the second stage was jamming while the main stage was setting up for the next band. I made my way back and forth from one stage to another all night long…with an occasional stop at the concessions.

Watch out, Crüe!

On to the main stage! I got to the main stage in time to catch Theory of a Deadman’s set. It was excellent! Those guys put on a great show. They brought the house down with a kick-ass rendition of ‘Bad Girlfriend’. Tyler Connolly sounded great on vocals and was tearing into his solos on guitar. A good show. The next band up was Godsmack. If I said the Godsmack set was awesome, it would be understating how great these guys are…what a freaking show these dudes put on. Sully is an absolute freak out front! And Shannon Larkin on drums is just ridiculous! They had a fantastic set of all their hits. If you weren’t singing along, you may have been dead because there was so much energy coming from these four guys that you couldn’t help but get up and jam. During the show, Sully jumps on a drum set and Larkin’s set rolls forward on the stage, and these two go face-to-face just beating the piss out of the drums. Sully is a talented guy, he sings, plays guitar, and oh yeah, just happened to play drums for twenty-plus years before he became a front man. You know what; I will make the statement that Godsmack was better then the Crüe on this particular evening. Yeah, I said it. Should it be called Smackfest?

Finally, the main event; the bad boys from L.A. themselves took the stage. After some brief theatrics in front of the curtain, the Mötley Crüe stage was revealed; a padded room with lights on the walls, leading back to the drum set. The remaining three members, Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx and Mick Mars came pouring out of the padded tunnel and they busted into Dr. Feelgood to open the show. The plan for this tour was to play the Dr. Feelgood album from front to back, in its entirety. That was fine by me! I have many favorites on that album and they played them all with gusto. ‘Kick Start My Heart’ and ‘Same Old Situation’ both sounded great. I did take note that Tommy Lee was not behind the drum kit. As it turns out, he injured his hand and the guy behind the kit was playing in his place until he healed up. That didn’t detract from the show, in my opinion. Tommy Lee is a good drummer, but nothing spectacular as drummers go. Average will always describe the bass playing of Nikki Sixx. Mick Mars and Vince Neil both sounded great, but didn’t knock my socks off.

Overall, this show is not to be missed! Godsmack was clearly the best band on this night. The Crüe sounded good, but I thought they lacked the sheer energy that they are easily capable of and have displayed in gaudy excess in years gone by. Check it out, if you dare!

Maybe I’m wired wrong, but I don’t see the appeal in concerts. I just went to Crue Fest and I could have had more fun sitting at home playing games or surfing the web. I shall now document the events of last evening.

First thing I noticed is concert stands are way too damn expensive. I came with 10 bucks and learned that nachos were 7 bucks! Burgers for 6? WATER at 4? Jesus, what are they thinking? And not allowing you to bring your own food and water proves they just want your entire paycheck. Oh, don’t think I have mentioned this yet, but I hate beer; it’s one of the most disgusting drinks I’ve ever come across. How anyone can drink bitter lemon juice is beyond me; but, for the sake of completion, beer was $11. I could have bought 5 times as much with the same money! And they were also selling Dominoes personal pan pizzas for $11; you could buy them for $5 if you went yourself.

First band that played was alright; never heard of them before though, so I can’t remember their name. The second band, Drowning Pool, was good; but I’ve heard their songs so much I was bored. When the third band came out, Theory of a DeadMan, I was enjoying it. Their music is more my kind, but everyone around me were pretty much booing them! Show some fucking respect to the guys at least. If you would rather listen to metal than rock then shut up and go somewhere else til Godsmack came on.

Speaking of which, when Godsmack came on, the stands were packed. It’s like everyone waited til the end of the concert to show up because they hated the other bands. Not that I mind, you can do whatever you want, but to see the stands go from half full to packed out the ass was an interesting sight. I didn’t know who Godsmack was really; I mean, I listen to their songs all the time but I didn’t know how they acted on stage. They really put on a show.

And finally, Motley Crue. Fuck Motley Crue. I’ve heard of them and figured they were a really good band from the 80’s but then they fucking sang. DEAR GOD THE SINGING! Why must the singer sound like he cut off his own balls? I had to get the fuck outta there before my ears bled. If they had a different singer, I might have been more impressed but maybe that’s part of the thrill from back in the 80’s. They can also put on a show, but it seems like they were trying to blind their audience too (every 5 seconds the floodlights would flicker towards us). Their bass was insane; even from the back end of the stands, I could feel the bass throughout my body. Right before I couldn’t stand it anymore and walked out, I was listening to the guitar. The guy can play a guitar, but during the intermissions when they were setting things up for the next set, it sounded like he was trying to break the strings (there was pretty well to no harmony at all).

Even with all the bands I didn’t once stand up and dance around. I hate the idea of dancing in public; I look like an idiot but everyone else does too so that doesn’t seem to be a problem. Mainly, I’m just too self conscious to enjoy a concert. Oh yeah, and I gave the singer of Motley Crue a nickname, Rat Boy; he sounds like a fucking rat in a cartoon show.

It was great to support one the 80’s top metal band, Motley Crue. We had the pleasure    of hooking up their backstage lounge and rocked it to it’s full potential. After an exhilarating concert festival, the backstage lounge was comfy cozy for fans and bands to relax from all the heavy metal angst. This year’s fest performers along with Motley Crue were Godsmack, Theory of a Deadman, Drowning Pool, and Charm City Devils.
