Even vergelijken. Verkeersdoden. (Zwaar) gewonden niet meegerekend. Onveilig vrijen is onverantwoord.

Blame the media.

Hiv is ieders verantwoordelijk.

Don’t shoot the pianist, don’t shoot Koppen.

The view from my office today: watching leaves as they fall from the trees, realising that Winter is just around the corner. I have to admit that lately, I often spend such a long time thinking about how to express myself that I forget what I wanted to write down in the first place. And since I don’t find the time anymore to write a decent blogpost I’ll keep it short this time.

This weekend I’m in London again. When I come to think of it there’s always been something about seeing the Union Jack that has conjured up all these fun scenes of swinging sixties, friendly-sounding bobbies and musicals. Okay, London was never love at first sight and even now I still don’t have those larger-than-life feelings about the city (contrary to other people). But the truth is that I really came to appreciate England’s capital more than before.

I think it’s the contrast within London that is most fascinating. It has some of the most beautiful open spaces (“London’s lungs”) and yet some of the streets in the old parts of London are so narrow that it’s almost impossible to see the sky. Moreover there’s the diversity. London has always been a city of many cultures and many faiths. Its residents reflect a wide range of national, cultural, racial and religious backgrounds (the result of a history which has included invasion and expansion). Moreover the different communities are part of the mainstream contemporary life. They not only have helped build today’s vibrant Britain, but have also contributed to its economic, social, democratic and cultural development. Again, clearly much can be learned from their experience.

Anyway. In order not to become a total bore I’ll stop here and end with a nice track I stumbled upon this week. It’s everything we love about guitars and boys. Bloc Party might not want to stay on hiatus too long with these boys around: Two Door Cinema Club – I Can Talk.

Bye-

Iedereen was bang.

Ontnuchterende cijfers.

Allemaal mensen, Nikolas Vanhecke, De Standaard, 25.11.2009

[…]

One of my mom’s favorite movies is Dr. Zhivago. As a little girl I would crawl up under her and we

One of my mom’s favorite movies is Dr. Zhivago. As a little girl I would crawl up under her and we would watch Omar Sharif steal Julie Christie’s heart while my dad watched sheep jumping over fences. Over the years the movie grew on me just as my affinity for Russian culture.

As much as I do like Russian culture and food I had never tried authentic Russian cuisine until recently. On East 20th Street is a quaint Russian restaurant named Mari Vanna. The restaurant is named for a mythical woman, who welcomed diners into her home with open arms, feeding them traditional Russian food on her best china and linens and the restaurant certainly lives up to the legend.

Upon stepping inside I felt as if I had been whisked away from Manhattan and dropped into a home in Moscow where Yuri was waiting to recite one of his bittersweet “Lara” poems. The décor, courtesy of designer Vera Tatarinova, is a Russian enthusiast’s dream filled with crystal bowls, picture frames, fine china, porcelain dolls, coasters, glasses and other precious collectibles. The cozy furnishings and friendly staff made me feel like I was visiting my comrades instead of going out to eat.

For appetizers I had Soleniya, homemade pickled vegetables, and homemade blinis with red caviar sour cream, diced red onion and crumbled egg yolk. I also had the opportunity to finally taste borsch with pampushka a soup consisting of beets, broth, beef, cabbage, carrots and potatoes. It is served with sour cream and is beyond delicious. Note to self: winter is around the corner, stock up on borsch. The only beef stroganoff I had tasted until recently was made by Stouffer’s, but after sampling the real McCoy, I could never go back to pseudo stroganoff again. The beef was tender, the sauce delectable and my mouth was watering for more.

Another great feature of Mari Vanna is vodka. The restaurant offers a diverse selection of house-infused vodkas. My favorite was the beet flavored vodka. The beet’s essence complimented the vodka well and masked some of the harshness. Talk about a way to get your vegetables, if V8 tasted like that I would buy stock in the company.

Mari Vanna is an unexpected surprise for any New Yorker that enters their doors. Even if they may not have been exposed to traditional Russian cuisine before, I have no doubt they will walk out a fan. The prices are fair and it is worth it. There is no better dining experience then when the atmosphere, décor and food combine in symbiotic harmony and create a wonderful dining experience. Nostrovia!

When it comes to food, I always like it when I find a good bargain. In the past, I thought that I had found the perfect value restaurant for sushi (see the Taro review), but this month’s sushi restaurant is a revelation. If you have dined at Wong Kei’s Chinese restaurant at Chinatown, you probably did not chose it for the lushness of the surroundings or the politeness of the waiters, but for the fact that it serves uncomplicated, delicious and – above all – cheap Authentic Chinese food. Misato restaurant, a little bit further down the road from Wong Kei, is the Japanese equivalent but without the rude waiters.

If you go to Misato and not find a line of eager diners waiting to be seated, you should consider yourself lucky. The first thing you will also notice is the windows would definitely benefit from some cleaning. Meanwhile, little Japanese waitresses run ferociously like little ants to take orders, deliver food and make the tables ready for the next people in line. But the true revelation starts when you are seated and handed the menu. Don’t get me wrong, the food is not equivalent to Nobu (if you still think that Nobu is the top sushi joint), but the food is plenty, tasty and above all cheap. Before you order, take a look at the tables nearby and glance at the portions the waitresses are carrying. Then delve in the menu and try to make a decision among the variety of bento boxes, rice dishes and noodle soups.

I ordered the Bento Sushi, the california rolls and the prawn tempura. While the tempura mixture could have been better and tastier, the other choices were more rewarding. In fact, I found it considerable difficult to negotiate all the food in the sushi bento, as it contained 7 sushi pieces, 6 maki pieces, 2 california pieces, crispy seaweed and a small salad with chicken, all for £8.80.

Only after finishing your food at Misato, you realize that even though it is nice to eat at a posh place, it can be even nicer to dine at a budget, yet delicious, eatery. And please consider leaving soon, as other people are waiting to be served.

Lambda.

P.S.: Misato restaurant is located at 11 Wardour St, London, W1D 6PG (Google Map, Streetview).

In about an hour I’m supposed to head to mom and dad’s to get in a limo that’s gonna take us and a few of my aunts and uncles and my sister and her boyfriend out to dinner then to Bardstown Road for the Bambi Walk.

I’m excited, it should be fun. However, I put on three different shirts trying to figure out what I wanted to wear tonight.

This always happens to me. I have somewhere to go and I have to look nice and all the sudden I hate every single part of my wardrobe. There’s the usual thoughts: I wish I had more to choose from, I wish I had that shirt I saw in that advertisement, I wish I looked good in that. Ask my friends, getting ready when we’re all together, I’m the one doing four wardrobe changes before I even start on makeup all the while asking them, “Does this look OK? Are you sure? Would you tell me if it didn’t? Did you like the other one better?” Annoying, I know. Sorry guys.

I have about four shirts I’ll wear out because everything else I’m afraid isn’t dressy enough, or I look bad in it. I haven’t had the money to go blow on clothes for myself in a while and when it comes time to do so, I can find something else I’d much rather spend it on because, let’s face it, there’s several things better than standing in a room with three mirrors looking at yourself, especially in things that may or may not fit. For example, I’d rather go to the dentist than shop for a bathing suit.

It’d help if I felt good in what I wear, but for that I think I’d need a schedule free enough to regularly hit the gym, a life coach affirming me every single morning and a personal stylist laying out what I need to wear each day/night. Not to be a Debbie Downer, I’m just…I don’t know.

As for tonight, I did find a shirt in my closet I like a lot. Too much, probably, because I wear it at least once a week to something – I told you I need to go clothes shopping. I’ll wear it tonight because I do feel good in it and I think it looks pretty good on me too. But seriously..I need some new stuff.

I won’t go shopping Black Friday because I don’t have it in me to wake up at 3 a.m. or push crazy people out of my way before the sun’s even up. But next weekend…watch out, Old Navy. I’m coming for ya.

The Metropolis city located only one block from the Patio Olmos mall on Illia blvd lately has been the niche for young adults thirsty of culture at a very accesible price ($ 5 to $20 argentinian pesos). You can find from mini theatrical plays of 30 minutes with the possibility to eat and drink while watching the play to foreign cinema of very good taste. The crowd is great and the theater made you feel more than welcome. How to get there? Believe me, 90% of the public transportation one way or other will let you close by.

Another theater to take into count is the well recognize teatro Libertador San Martin. Many important performances of international level had taken place here. Ballet, theatrical plays, opera and concerts in this theater will give you a preview of the glamour from the past and a quality culture dosis.

Just a quick one this weekend as I’m far too busy (what an arse I sound) so here are 5 top musical based things to do in Manchester this weekend in no particular order:

1) The Chemical Brothers – Sankey’s; Tonight

I dont think I really need to hype this one up, it rather speaks for itself, the Chems are here to celebrate Bugged Out’s 15th year birthday, and all I can say is it is going to be big, very big, morbidly obese big.

2) La Roux and Zane Lowe – Warehouse Project; Saturday Night

Again not exactly a gig I have to hype up a tremendous amount La Roux is huge and Zane, our favourite antipodean Radio 1 DJ is always worth seeing, and I dont think you need a particular excuse to go to a Warehouse night this year, the general consensus id that this year it has been easily the best. Also one of my favourite bands at the moment Ou Est La Swimming Pool are also playing. My friend saw Tiga a few weeks back and he could barely speak for about 3 days. Go and see, please

3) Contort Yourself - The Roadhouse; Saturday Night

One of Manchester’s own, Contort Yourself are DJ’s who provide in their own words, “The best 8-bit-breaks, dance floor classics, punishing house and cosmic pop”. They are truly tremendous if you go to the Roadhouse I can guarantee you will have a good night* so check out their myspace and go along

4) Breakestra – Band On The Wall; Saturday Night

Breakestra are an LA based 8-piece funk and soul band who bring it hard, I’ve heard very good things about them, people have mentioned the names James Brown and Parliament to me, and it doesnt get much more funky than that. If you havent been to the BOTW since it was done up then this would be a good an excuse as any it looks great, and if you want to be funked silly (yes I did just say that) then head along

5) Datarock - Moho; Sunday Night

Datarock are awesome = fact. They may be crazy Norwegians with a list of band members that dwarfs the Polyphonic Spree but theyre blend of electro is right up my street, I cannot think of a better way of spending a Sunday night than absorbing some Datarock magic.

If you need any other listings please see my page on gigs

*obviously that was metaphorically speaking A N Other Manc cannot be responsible for you having a good night.

There was a time when I couldn’t understand why people got so excited when the DJ dropped Chesney Hawkes, why my friends would scream in ecstasy when The Proclaimers began walking 500 miles yet again and I would scream out of desperation, why the Ghostbusters theme tune brought man and woman alike to orgasmic heights of sheer joy.

I know what you’re thinking: ‘he’s one of those miserable twats who thinks he’s too cool to dance to some fun pop.’ I’m sure that’s true. Having said that, I’m consistently excellent at making a tit out of myself on dance floors across London, and if you’ve seen some of the things I’ve done to my hair over the past few years, you’ll know that I have no qualms when it comes to looking ridiculous (I’m thinking particularly of the time when I was going for the whole Messiah look).

When I found out that I was off to the Roxy for a friend’s birthday, I wasn’t that excited. I’d heard that it was properly cheesy (I’m talking stilton to the power of camembert) and that the DJs were not really DJs so much as random fat blokes pressing pause and play.

The club was busy (Friday) without being like a sardine can, and you could get served without too much queuing. The DJs had the anticipated level of skill, but the track selection was quality. It was crowd-pleasing stuff with the odd gem chucked in and the vibe in the club was fun fun fun.

It’s a pretty nice space, with a long bar and fewer of the sticky floors and sodden carpets of say, Cheapskates. The bouncers don’t give you any hassle unless you deserve it. The queue can be quite slow so get there early on busy nights (Friday, Saturday, Monday) and enjoy the Roxy for what it is: a fun, friendly, surprisingly satisfying night out.

No really, Lyssa, what’s a tweetup? A: All my fave people in one place. With someone else providing food and booze. And the chance to win lots of cool stuff. Trust me, it’s waaaay better than hanging out at my house with my crazy dog, Old Dog, and the cat that isn’t quite toilet trained, so he insists on pooping all around the house. Trust me.

See you there!
