We’ve witnessed history in the making. Congratulations Barack Obama! Geoff (at Going.com) put together a large webpage showcasing some 700 frontpages of newspapers from around the world (from Newseum) on the day that Barack Obama won the US Presidential Election. Check it out: Link

The selections are impressive, though toward the end some newspapers apparently either didn’t get the news, didn’t care or had to go to press before the results were in.

I’ve been using Going.com for a couple months since they came out with their recommendations engine update but lately I’ve found Going to be more frustrating for what it attempts to deliver, but doesn’t. In addition, many of the events turn out to be paid parties that are advertised using Social Networks (I suppose I can’t stop that) but I take most of this kind of advertisement as “noise” and rarely as anything I’d want to go to or have fun at.

And while I’ve spent a good deal of time selecting events I like and those I don’t, the Going.com engine does not appear to be learning anything new about me or what I like (that was one thing it claimed it could do, though).

Going.com also seems to be giving me Boston events even though I live in New York City.

That got me thinking of how Social Media could backfire if it’s not delivering what people came for – which might be why some are tanking on Social Media and Social Networks.

However, I think Social Networks are very useful and I belong to several and Social Media is just in it’s infancy – I think Social Networks will continue to evolve way past what they are now.

The Passions hit Chicago @ the Liars Club, Friday.

So, The Passions are set to invade Chicago this weekend at the The Liars Club. You can read all about the event on Going.com, and I believe that if you RSVP the show it’s free cover- which is always nice. There’ve been a lot of free shows lately. I love promotional bonuses. Any handout nice considering that these shows are eating my wallet. But I’m pretty excited for this one. These Brooklyn Kitsune Records residents will be sure to set floors on fire. Kitsune never fails, that label has consistently put out some of the most groundbreaking, cross-genre dance music that there is.

I’ve never been to the Liars Club, but you can expect to see me there later this week. If you’re on the fence, wondering if it’s worth it give these tunes a listen.

Going.com caught me at this weekend’s Brooklyn Book Festival in downtown Brooklyn. The plaque I’m holding up is a description of my organization, The New York Center for Independent Publishing (NYCIP)…to go to the going.com event listing (and see more of their pics), click on me. It was pretty windy that morning (who wants to be shivering on a Sunday morning at 9am?), but all was good once the sun crept over the stone and peered through the plaza. There were hundreds of exhibitors (mostly publishers), authors, and about 10,000 people came out to play. It was a great networking event for me, both for the organization, and for Urban Molecule.

I ran into author and friend Jolene Siana, this great girl I met here in the city last year. She introduced me to Caprice Crane and Sarah Grace McCandless. Caprice is an award-winning novelist out with a new book called forget about it. Sarah is a graphic novelist/writer/cupcake eater. Both very beautiful. Great seeing you Jolene!!

Press of mention: Ocean Press. This publisher specializes in radical books on Latin America. Bill Koehnlein had a great spread of Che Guevara titles that made my mouth water. I’ve been fascinated with Guevara ever since I first heard his name used in reference in an early 90s Pet Shop Boys tune.

Also, I met Vincent Cuccia, an italian writer who offered to help me with grant writing and incorporating Urban Molecule. Very funny guy. Also, if you want to meet a dog that paints, goto www.tillie.org. Tillie is “The World’s Preeminent Canine Artist.” And, as a gift, the Brooklyn Book Festival Committee gave everyone a moleskine – how can you beat that?

Later, after the Festival, I met with my friend Max who just moved to Henry Street earlier this year. We went for sorbet and cookies and caught up. All-in-all, a great day in Brooklyn! To see more of my flickr pics of the Brooklyn Book Festival, click on the picture above (that’s me, Azie, and her pup Sia).

In case you’ve been left out of the loop, Going.com is a website dedicated to the sheer pleasure of being young in the city- any city! They cover New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago–even San Fran. For those who feel slightly skeptical of enjoying an unplanned night, this site is gold.

Going.com is the place to find out what’s going on, who’s going, and how it’s gonna go. With an expansive event calendar, private e-vite system, and a substantial list of parties, concerts, and shows, this website will feel just as lifesaving as the first second your lips hit that Cosmo.

Speaking of Cosmos, Going.com has recently upgraded, introducing the coolest new feature to its site, which allows you to buy your other Going.com friends a drink. Yes, via the internet!

Did your best friend save you with her Oscar-winning flat tire routine on a bad date last week, and there’s no doubt you owe her a cold one?

Have you noticed lately that your boyfriend has been really stressed out over his summer Calculus class? The only way to chill him out is with some red red wine, right? Well, now you can buy him and your whole crew a round!

All you have to do is go to your lucky friend’s Going profile, click on the ‘Buy Me a Drink’ button, fill out the gift info with a personalized note, (A little Chardonnay for my beh-bay?) and a little drink icon will pop up in their inbox, which contains a gift code. Once they find a participating BuyYourFriendADrink.com bar or restaurant in the area, they can head over and enjoy their free drink. It’s that simple!

As someone who helped sneak a keg into the dorms as a birthday gift for a wide-eyed friend who makes LiLo’s party habits seem like child’s play, I can tell you: Whether you’re trying to earn a couple brownie points with your bestie or your best boy, booze is a safe bet.

Cheers!
