OK, so why did I write this rather radical post? Two occurences:

#1 Bernie Goldberg appeared on Fox News and tried to smear Liberals/Democrats and tried to explain why Liberals hate Sarah Palin. His brainless hypothesis: “She has 5 kids. Liberals don’t have 5 kids. One of them has down-syndrome. Liberals certainly don’t allow that to happen.” I think Jon Stewart’s response sums it up very well: “Go fuck yourself”, later adding “Eunice Kennedy Shriver [one of nine Kennedy children] founded the Special Olympics because she wanted an organized form where she could mock children with down-syndrome. Of course the Special Olympics is to winners as Fox news is to experts. If you show up, you are one”

#2 A 10-year-old child from Arkansas refused to pledge allegiance to the flag of the US. His reasoning? The Pledge of Allegiance states “with liberty and justice for all”. The kid thinks this has not been accomplished yet since homosexuals are still severely discriminated in the US. What happened after that? He got mobbed by his fellow students AND teachers alike. I really do love some Americans and how to oversell their patriotism. If that’s not all some (fortunately not all) posters on a Christian forum picked on him even more. Some excerpts:

“These are the types of kids who grow up to be those ultra-jerky liberals who think they are smarter then everyone else because they can articulate well. The kinds of people who take Michael Moore and Richard Dawkins seriously.”

“Eh, the little punk needs to be slapped.”

“If you can’t pledge allegiance to this country get the heck out of it, or change it.”

I think it’s sad if somebody is mocked for a true statement. And some of these idiots should consider what psychological consequences their mocking might have. But well, criticizing the truth is one of mankind’s favorite activity… I’ve got nothing more to say to this…

Entre los cientos de metáforas que se han utilizado para describir el misterioso proceso (Borges) de la traducción, la de la interpretación musical ha sido siempre mi preferida. Cuando me sitúo ante un texto (que normalmente coloco en un atril), me siento como un músico dispuesto a acometer la tarea de descifrar, asimilar y expresar lo que otro compuso. Por eso me sorprendió que, en el excelente programa de Radio Nacional “A dos voces” de Luis Gago, dos traductores, Amaya Lacasa (Bulgakov, Pushkin, otros) y Eustaquio Barjau (Peter Handke, pero también Hölderlin o Rilke), ambos de gran sensibilidad musical, rechazaran el paralelismo. Para Lacasa, traducir era algo muy distinto de interpretar; para Barjau, algo mucho más modesto. Menos mal que otro día, en el mismo programa, Javier Marías (Sterne, Conrad, Ashbery, Yeats) dijo que, en su opinión, las traducciones eran como variaciones sobre un tema original.

Desde entonces no he hecho más que dar vueltas a la cuestión, y cada vez me convenzo más de que la metáfora es válida, sumamente  válida… siempre que no se olvide que se trata de una metáfora (etimológicamente, una “traslación”) y no de una igualdad absoluta reconfortado encontrar un texto de la finlandesa Oili Suominen: “Todos los traductores de Grass tienen la misma partitura delante, pero cada uno toca su propia interpretación y frasea a su modo, y cada instrumento tiene su propio sonido”.

En mi opinión se trata de una imagen tan útil, en muchos aspectos, que no me resisto a enumerar algunos. En primer lugar, el de las relaciones entre autor y traductor, y entre original y obra traducida. Si la traducción es una interpretación (musical) del texto, resulta perfectamente comprensible por qué puede haber innumerables traducciones válidas; y por qué una (o varias) de ellas puede ser considerada como “de referencia” (no me gusta la palabra “canónica”, ninguna traducción “va a misa”), es decir, como la traducción que hay que leer si no se domina el idioma original o como la traducción de la que no se podrá prescindir si se quiere hacer otra, aunque sea para rebelarse contra ella o para dejarla en ridículo. Muy benjaminiamente comprende también por qué la versión del propio autor es sólo la primera, y todas las demás vienen a completarla y enriquecerla; por qué es imaginable (al menos teórica y, en alguna ocasión, prácticamente), que esa primera interpretación no sea necesariamente “la mejor”… (¿Es realmente Strawinsky quien mejor dirigió a Strawinsky, o cabe preferir las versiones de Ernest Ansermet?). Se puede resolver la vieja discusión de si el traductor nace o se hace, porque las Facultades se nos convierten en conservatorios en donde los futuros traductores estudian técnicas y aprenden fundamentos teóricos (llámense como se llamen, pero en el fondo solfeo, armonía y composición), aunque necesiten también algo que ningún conservatorio, ninguna facultad universitaria puede darles; y entendemos asimismo por qué proliferan actualmente los traductores de digitación vertiginosa, pero sin alma. Por qué “envejecen” las traducciones: es sólo porque su estilo de interpretar ha pasado de moda. Se nos aclara también, y no es poco, el problema de los instrumentos antiguos, es decir, de los “castellanos” de época que debemos –o no debemos– emplear al traducir los clásicos, discusión que en el ámbito musical no parece haber terminado y que en el de la traducción sigue igualmente abierta.

La metáfora musical ayuda también a comprender el problema de la necesaria empatía entre autor y traductor, entre compositor e intérprete. Nos recuerda que no se puede  traducir, interpretar hoy a Schumann o Schnitzler como interpretaríamos a Kafka o Janáček; nos enfrenta con el problema de si un traductor o un músico es una “chica para todo” que puede interpretar a cualquier autor, o si debe y tiene que especializarse; de si hay “voces” traductoras más adaptadas al bel canto y otras que se prestan más al verismo; si hay que tener cierta edad, o cierta experiencia (o ambas cosas), para traducir/interpretar a Wagner o Shakespeare; es decir, si un intérprete debe esperar a que su voz se ensanche y afirme antes de cantar el Tristán… y no traducir el King Lear antes de cumplir los sesenta años. De si puede ocurrir que un traductor, veinticinco años después de haber interpretado sus Variaciones Goldberg, pueda sentir, como Glenn Gould, la irresistible necesidad de grabarlas de nuevo, de hacer una nueva traducción. Y, en el plano universitario, si no tendría que haber para los traductores manuales de ejercicios como el Czerny para el piano o el Dionisio Aguado para la guitarra, o si alguien no debería inventarse un método Suzuki para enseñar a los niños a tocar, desde muy pequeños, el violín de la traducción… De paso, también resulta evidente por qué el nombre del traductor debe figurar en la portada del libro: nadie quiere escuchar simplemente una Novena de Mahler sino una Novena de Mahler dirigida, por ejemplo, por Abbado.

Sin embargo, hora es ya de explicar el título de este artículo. La verdad es que el título que yo di cuando se me pidió, mucho antes de escribir una sola línea, fue “El castellano bien temperado”, en obvia alusión a la famosa obra de Bach. Sin embargo, cuando vi que el título se había transformado en “El castellano bien templado” – no sé si por error o porque alguien pensó que “templar” era más castellano – me gustó. En el fondo yo quería hablar de un instrumento (el idioma español) bien temperado, pero también, por supuesto, bien templado.

So I just wanted to write about my current obsession with the tv show “The Office”. I have always enjoyed watching the show, but recently I have been watching episodes non-stop! Like now, for instance, I will finish writing this post and then watch a few episodes online… I am currently making my way through season 2 and loving every episode!

I think the reason I love the show so much is because of Jim and Pam. They are absolutely the best thing about the show (for me) probably because they are adorable together and pull the funniest pranks on Dwight. Although, Kevin and Stanley do have a close second for being all around hilarious…

Anyway, this was somewhat a pointless blog but I am just so obsessed at the moment with The Office I couldn’t hold it in.

Hi all!  just wanted to let you know that my brother is currently in a film festival.  Basically, he created a commercial for a company called ‘Herbon’, which makes cough candies and such.  All of the entries into the contest are put on youtube and the video with the highest number of views by November 22nd can win $15000!!  So its a pretty big thing…

My brother’s commercial is actually quite funny and I think he did a really good job!  But I would love it if you all took the time to watch it (maybe a couple times a day…) that would be greatly appreciated!

My biology teacher once told me that there are as many stars in the universe as there are grains of sand on the entire earth!!

That’s kind of crazy to think about… Makes me feel really insignificant.

I’ve never really thought of myself as a jealous person until today.  I mean, I know I tend to compare myself to others and wish I was more like them… but I guess that is kind of “good” jealousy. 

I was having some problems with a friend of mine… not really problems I guess, more just getting on my nerves.  This has happened before, and I realized that I always tend to just blame the other person for being “annoying”.  “Yeah, it must be so-and-so’s fault…they’re just acting so obnoxious lately, they’re really getting on my nerves”.  But tonight, it completely dawned on me… it’s really not the other person’s “fault” at all…  In actuality, I was just annoyed with myself for being jealous of them. 

I think I have a hard time being jealous of someone… jealousy really is a waste of an emotion.  If someone can do more turns than me or is prettier than me or is more flexible than me, I tend to put up this emotional wall thinking that if I distance myself then I won’t think about how jealous I am of them.  And then in my mind I try to blame them for being something they’re not just so I don’t look like an idiot.  I made that mistake today… talking about this person in a way that they really aren’t, when I’m just jealous of their abilities and talents.  I wish that I have what they have, and then I get frustrated with myself because I know that my talents, although different, are just as unique and awesome as theirs.  I have to constantly remind myself to not only appreciate other peoples abilities, but to also appreciate my own.  I will never be able to conquer this jealousy until I can accept my own abilities and limitations. 

I made a mistake today and I feel horrible… I can’t believe that I let my own jealousy stand in front of my morals.  Before today I never thought of myself as a jealous person, but at least I’ve realized it and hopefully I can move past this.

So Hallowe’en is finally upon us once again.  A night where people can get dressed up in the scariest, funniest, most odd looking costumes and fit right in in any crowd.

I’m a big fan of Hallowe’en.  I love just looking around and seeing everyone’s costumes… some are completely original while others… not so much.  My brother dressed up as Facebook yesterday for a party… he had a picture frame around his head like a “profile picture”, then a white t-shirt with his name, status and wall on it.  Then he had fabric markers and people could “write on his wall” by writing things on his tshirt.  On the back of his shirt he had pictures, and people could comment on them, etc.  It was a pretty neat and original idea.  

Then there are the hundreds of sexy nurses, maids, angels, firefighters, police men/women, pirates, cowboys/girls… pretty much anything that takes a responsible and conservative career position and turns in into someone with a lot of cleavage, muscles, skin, and legs showing…  Now these are the costumes that I’m not a huge fan of…  It seems like over time the whole fun and imagination of Hallowe’en diminishes so much.  When we were kids, we would spend weeks beforehand thinking of a costume, putting it together, trying to look as real as possible.  And then as we grow up… Hallowe’en isn’t all about wearing sweet costumes, or getting way too much free candy.  It becomes a night of trying to wear as little as possible while still being able to call it a costume.  It becomes a night of finding any random costume to wear, just knowing that in a few hours you’ll be too drunk anyway for anyone to notice how stupid you look.

My favourite part about Hallowe’en is just seeing the excitement on little kids’ faces as they’re getting dressed up, going door to door, and holding out their huge pillowcase… intent on filling the entire thing up to the brim with candy.  Let’s bring that excitement and spirit back into this holiday…  put the “halloooo” back in Hallowe’en!

So this weekend we have to turn our clocks back an hour. That idea always amazed me…. we could watch tv, read a book, do something for an hour, then turn our clocks back and just get that entire hour back in our lives… I find that idea kind of… insane. but also pretty sweet. I mean we could use that hour to do something so totally pointless that when we turn our clocks back it doesn’t even matter at all…. or we could use that hour to do something completely awesome for a longer amount of time. Either way, I think its kind of cool that every fall we get to go back in time… like our very own time machine. Without the whole “machine” part…

Don’t you hate it when you have cetain expectations of how something is going to work out and then things don’t go entirely to plan? The thing is though, that maybe things don’t even turn out bad… they just don’t turn out the way you were expecting them to. I guess you are all prepared to react in a certain way when you think you know how things will go. And then BAM they don’t end up that way…

Recently I’ve had a couple happenings where I thought I completely knew how thing were going to turn out. And then they ended up completely different. I ended up getting kind of bummed out, but really things didn’t end up too bad in the end… I guess I just wasn’t prepared. I think I need to try to stop getting too tied up in expectations…. they only end up making you feel worse in the end if things don’t work out accoding to plan…

La Paz, 26 oct (EFE).- Parlamentarios del oficialista Movimiento Al Socialismo (MAS) criticaron hoy la decisión del presidente Barack Obama de destinar al ex embajador de Estados Unidos en La Paz, Philip Goldberg, que fue expulsado por el Gobierno de Evo Morales, al Departamento de Estado de su país.

Pese a reconocer que esa es una decisión soberana del Gobierno estadounidense, los parlamentarios consideraron que esta nominación demuestra que Obama “difícilmente cambiará su estrategia y política con relación a América Latina y otros países del mundo”, según un comunicado de la Cámara de Diputados.

El presidente de Estados Unidos designó el viernes a Goldberg, como el nuevo subsecretario adjunto para Asuntos de Inteligencia e Investigación del Departamento de Estado.

Morales expulsó a Goldberg de Bolivia en septiembre de 2008 bajo la acusación de conspirar contra su Gobierno y apoyar a sus opositores.

Para el diputado y jefe de campaña del MAS Jorge Silva, esta designación “es como un premio al boicot (y) al espionaje, a un hombre que ha cumplido el mandato de la política internacional de Estados Unidos, para sabotear y conspirar contra Gobiernos producto de las decisiones mayoritarias”.

Según el senador Antonio Peredo, los gobernantes de EE.UU. “no claudicarán en sus pretensiones con relación al resto del mundo, sea quien sea el presidente electo”.

“Es evidente que eso demuestra que en el Gobierno de Estados Unidos y la alternancia de los partidos políticos, no significa un cambio de estrategias, sigue siendo la misma, con relación a América Latina y otra parte del mundo”, agregó.

Oficialistas bolivianos critican el nuevo puesto del ex embajador de EE.UU. en La Paz

El presidente de Estados Unidos, Barack Obama, designó el viernes al ex embajador del país del norte en Bolivia Philip Goldberg como el nuevo subsecretario adjunto para Asuntos de Inteligencia e Investigación del Departamento de Estado.

De acuerdo con el reporte oficial de la administración Obama, el cargo elegido para Goldberg tiene el rango de Subsecretario de Estado Adjunto.

La nueva función del diplomático es considerada “clave” por la Casa Blanca.

Goldberg asumirá, en consecuencia, el cargo de Director de la oficina de Inteligencia e Investigación (INR) del Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos.

Según el informe de la Casa Blanca, un funcionario del Departamento de Estado dijo que Goldberg es uno de los funcionarios diplomáticos de carrera a quien admira la secretaria de Estado, Hillary Clinton.

Por ello, apuntó el portavoz, la convocatoria para que trabaje al frente de la oficina de Inteligencia e Investigación es una muestra de los esfuerzos de la ex Primera Dama por promover a funcionarios de carrera del servicio exterior a posiciones de gran importancia y relevancia…. Ver:

La Paz, 25 Oct (Erbol).- El gobierno de los Estados Unidos, a la cabeza del entonces presidente George W. Bush, vetó entre los años 2006 y 2008 la venta de equipo antimotines para la Policía Boliviana a sugerencia del ex embajador de ese país en Bolivia, Philip Goldberg.

La denuncia la hizo conocer el ministro de Gobierno, Alfredo Rada, quien dijo que durante los violentos disturbios de agosto y septiembre del año pasado se pudo constatar que el Departamento de Estado de los Estados Unidos frenó la compra-venta de equipo disuasivo y defensivo para el resguardo del orden público en Bolivia.

“El 2008 detectamos, en momentos en que el país un clima de tensión, que cuando queríamos adquirir equipamiento antimotines nos encontrábamos con obstáculos a nivel internacional, había un veto del Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos”, remarcó la autoridad.

Indicó que este veto se dio a partir de 2006, año en el que comenzó la gestión gubernamental del presidente Evo Morales, y se extendió hasta el 2008, gestión en la que fue expulsado del país el embajador Philip Goldberg por acciones conspirativas en contra del gobierno boliviano.

“Entre el 2006 y 2008 se impuso un veto a cualquier compra o adquisición de material antimotín destinado a Bolivia, quien incidió para esa actitud fue el embajador Philip Goldberg por los informes que enviaba. Esta es una de las razones para su expulsión de Bolivia, en un afán claramente conspirativo y político, influenció para que el Departamento de Estado esos años impusiera un veto a cualquier adquisición de equipo antimotines para la Policía”, subrayó.

El ministro Rada admitió que en esos dos años el gobierno tuvo muchas dificultades, porque había gente que quería ver a la Policía Nacional sin el equipamiento necesario para resguardar el orden público.
