The tangle of confusion and self-contradiction in Pullman’s literary criticism is disturbing to see. It reveals, I think, that his whole attitude to the Narnia Chronicles is irrationally driven. He doesn’t want to critique the books, he wants to damage them. Any weapon that comes to hand he will grab at, regardless of its suitability for the task. The fashionable brickbats about sexism and racism were to be expected. The half-truths about Digory are a cleverer ploy. The absurd claims about Susan are audacious. And as for the complaints about the death of Peter et al, it has to be said that here Lewis’s train is not the only Pullman to have left the rails. (Michael Ward, On Lewis and Pullman)

If you’ve read and enjoyed both C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia and Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials as I have, you’ll really appreciate this short article by Michael Ward. Many of you would already know that Pullman spews nothing but bile for Lewis’s Chronicles. Perhaps you’ve wondered why, or even if his criticisms have merit. Dr. Ward explores the allegations and insults of Pullman for Lewis’s Chronicles, helping us understand both the nature of Pullman’s vilification and the immensity of his errors.

According to the American Medical Association, stress is a factor in over 75% of sickness and the World Health Organization has stated that stress is America’s number one health problem.

And might I say, this is far, far superior to the one put up by the FFRF last year. It’s not divisive but rather is positive and inclusive. It’s exactly the kind of sentiment we should be promoting. Kuddos!

I think everyone already suspected as much. As Sam Elliott points out, the film made an incredible $380 million at the box office internationally and only suffered in the ultra-religious U.S., making a mere $85 million domestically. The total gross is plenty to justify completely the trilogy, only New Line seems to have gotten scared off by the likes of Bill “I love child rapists” Donohue and other fanatical Catholic voices.

10. The Chronicles of Amber
Roger Zelazny

With the Amber novels, Zelazny created a very detailed and intricate fantasy universe. Fantasy fans have called this one of the most engrossing fantasy worlds they have ever read and remains a classic of modern fantasy.

9. The King of Elfland’s Daughter
Lord Dunsany

One of the most influential works of fantasy writing, Lord Dunsany’s 1924 novel of elves, kingdoms and magic laid out the groundwork for much of modern fantasy today. This is truly a pioneering work in the genre which laid out the groundwork for the writers who would come after.

8. A Song of Ice and Fire
George R. R. Martin

George Martin’s series is a richly constructed world grounded in both reality and fantasy. These unconventional plots keep the story fresh. The action is realistic while the events are unpredictable, adding a certain suspense around the characters, as you truly don’t know what will happen to them. The four books of the series thus far have grabbed the attention of high fantasy fans everywhere as they have proven to be some of the best there is.

7. A Wrinkle in Time
Madeleine L’Engle

This richly layered children’s fantasy has become a favourite to many readers over the years. Its deep themes may remind you of C.S. Lewis, with a hard look at what it means to be a child, as well as just being a great adventure. A Wrinkle in Time is a book which will stand the test of time.

6. The Harry Potter Series
J.K. Rowling

Sure, it may be bold of me to include a series which is so recent as high as #5. However, this is no ordinary fantasy series. This is the series which created a worldwide reading phenomenon, grabbing the attention of both kids and adults everywhere. Yet Harry Potter is not just hype; these are wonderfully crafted stories set in a fully realized magical world. The characters feel real, and even more so since we follow them through their growing years throughout the seven books. There are twists and very interesting plot devices all leading up to a final conclusion which does not disappoint. This series is one of the powerhouses of modern fantasy, and will remain so more a long, long time.

5. The Chronicles of Narnia
C.S. Lewis

Its interesting that most of this list is comprised of stories written for children. Perhaps it says something about the child-like need for discovery in fantasy tales, and none sums it up better than the Narnia books. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe has reached instant classic status, and the wardrobe in the title has become an icon for all portals into new and fantastic worlds. Lewis’ Christianity allegories also give this series an intellectual edge which doesn’t distract from the story. These seven books are some of the most beloved fantasy stories of all time.

4. His Dark Materials
Philip Pullman

Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy tells the story of two kids who are able to journey through the different dimensions which exist in the universe. These two children have a great destiny in the future of all the worlds which will affect the very nature of existence and spirituality. Pullman reaches for some pretty big goals here, but does not disappoint. He tackles the domination of organized religion while championing the freedoms of human thought and expression.

3. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass
Lewis Carroll

Carroll’s fantasy tale of Alice’s trip down the rabbit hole has captured the imagination of youth all over the world. This exercise in nonsensical logic, language and situations has become a book not only to enjoy, bu also to study. The metaphors in these two tales run deep and are often referenced by many other media. Alice and her crazy adventures simply make no sense; and that’s why we love them.

2. A Midsummer’s Night Dream
William Shakespeare

Let’s face it; Shakespeare is the master. Many of Shakespeare’s plays have an element of fantasy in them, but with Dream the bard went all out. Shakespeare mostly played upon the idea of the fairy world and the mischievous creatures’ intrusions upon the lives of us regular humans. Midsummer night’s dream is perhaps Shakespeare’s most beloved comedy, and its whimsy will live on for many centuries to come.

1. The Lord of the Rings
J.R.R. Tolkien

Choosing the greatest work of literary fiction was an easy task. It is, of course, the Lord of the Rings; the epic high fantasy of one hobbits journey to defeat the powers of evil. No fantasy world is as rich or detailed as Tolkien’s Middle Earth. It is as if he himself believed it to be a real place, complete with a full, fleshed out history and wonderfully detailed geography. And set in this world is a strong, heartfelt story which has proven to be ageless. This is a bold tale of massive proportions which also works on the simplest emotional level. A masterpiece in every way.

This was hard! Some of the stuff I envisioned didn’t actually pan out the way I wanted it to when it came to drawing things, to many magical hidden rooms, he he. This is what I always saw, though, while writing, and now you can see it too!

It’s raining rather profusely today and I am still battling the Flu. I shut all the windows and turned on a few lamps and lit some candles, so hopefully this will bring warmth back to my life. I slept on the couch last night because I was sniffling/coughing so much and I didn’t want to bother my husband, needless to say he was angry that I slept on the couch because I am the sick one. The Jazz channel is also playing, that’s always nice. I really wish I could have a whole bottle of wine and forget about the Flu, but that doesn’t seem very responsible…

I watched one of the most disturbing movies yesterday, it was called Blindness. Unless you are into scary epidemics, don’t see it, it will haunt you. I can’t stop thinking about it. It does have a good ending, though. I’ve watched a lot of random movies lately. It seems that in the afternoons they cater to the artistic stay-at-home crowd.

I really want to see Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs…

Book Covers

I made new covers for the Feather Book Series the other day and shared them with the members of the Fan Club. They gave me some great feedback, so I will likely be changing them from what you see below. I even had some Fans send me fonts they thought were neat LOL. It will be hard to add everyone’s suggestions, but I am going to try. A lot of the Fans that came back with comments to the questions I asked were actually QUITE helpful. I am sure you will see the product of your answers throughout the third book.

Editor Progress:

Christina is nearly done re-editing Feather, God love her for it! (She got to go to a private Bon Jovi Concert yesterday, boooooooo, we’re all jealous). Guardian I suspect will go faster because there will be fewer mistakes, and then Raven will rock out just as fast. Right now I am shooting for a December release of Raven, DECEMBER!!!!! By then it will be snowy (for some of us) and just the right season for reading.

At the moment, I am having a really bad cold which is so annoying.

Term NUMBER 2….woooowooooooooooo:-)

I must admit that we are already in week 03 but since this blog is shiny brand new, I couldn`t post sooner

In this semester we will learn all about the Psychology of Body Mechanics.

I am really happy to have another brilliant Mentor Chad Stewart for this new second term !

He worked for films like: Fantasia, Tarzan, Tom and Jerry the Movie, The Polar Express, The Simpsons…

To this post I attached the “typical” AM class scenery. Once in a week we are having a live Q&A Videoconference with our Mentor and Class, which is so amazing.

I still feel so lucky and happy to have that great opportunity in taking those AM classes. To be able to learn so much from these professionals is like a dream come true and the knowledge I gain there is priceless !

I was quite surprised this week to see so much classic literature topping the ALA’s most frequ

I was quite surprised this week to see so much classic literature topping the ALA’s most frequently challenged list for 2009. To clarify, this is a list of books that are challenged by individuals in the community. They have to submit a “challenge form” stating their reasons, to a school or public library.

First off, here’s the list:

And Tango Makes Three, by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell
Reasons: anti-ethnic, anti-family, homosexuality, religious viewpoint, and unsuited to age group

His Dark Materials trilogy, by Philip Pullman
Reasons: political viewpoint, religious viewpoint, and violence

TTYL; TTFN; L8R, G8R (series), by Lauren Myracle
Reasons: offensive language, sexually explicit, and unsuited to age group

Scary Stories (series), by Alvin Schwartz
Reasons: occult/satanism, religious viewpoint, and violence

Bless Me, Ultima, by Rudolfo Anaya
Reasons: occult/satanism, offensive language, religious viewpoint, sexually explicit, and violence

The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky
Reasons: drugs, homosexuality, nudity, offensive language, sexually explicit, suicide, and unsuited to age group

Gossip Girl (series), by Cecily von Ziegesar
Reasons: offensive language, sexually explicit, and unsuited to age group

Uncle Bobby’s Wedding, by Sarah S. Brannen
Reasons: homosexuality and unsuited to age group

The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini
Reasons: offensive language, sexually explicit, and unsuited to age group

Flashcards of My Life, by Charise Mericle Harper
Reasons: sexually explicit and unsuited to age group

Now, I want to know: should these books actually be *allowed* to be challenged? Doesn’t that basically just amount to censorship, pure and simple? If parents are truly concerned about their children reading non-appropriate material for their age group (which is a valid concern of course!), perhaps books should be getting ratings, the same way movies do. At least to borrow from a public library would set age restrictions on younger patrons. What do you think? Would you also challenge any of these books? Find out more about other banned books over the years on Infloox.

(His Dark Materials, Book 3)
by Philip Pullman
narrated by Philip Pullman
Multicast performance
Produced by Listening Library
Approx 12 hours

I have finally finished the series of “His Dark Materials” by Philip Pullman. I set out on this reading adventure intrigued by the protestations from organized religion when the movie came out. I saw the movie and didn’t see what the hubbub was about. So then I thought well maybe it was in the book and they left out parts from the movie to keep the religious right from protesting. After reading the first two books I still didn’t see what the big deal was. Basically the series was just another fantasy young adult series that borrowed from many mythologies to create a very creative well told story. With this third book in the series I still wonder why all the fuss, but can see where closed minded individuals who believe “their truth” to be the only truth worry that the series may instigate the young masses to form thoughts on their own. Okay, that was a bit harsh, but I still just don’t get it. Yes the third book does see the death of a deity known as “The Authority,” but it also sees the death of a fallen angel by the name of Metatron, and yes, this book is Philip Pullman’s way of writing a book that promotes an alternative to organized religion, but, the general idea of good triumphing over evil and everyone can make a difference and we must fight for our freewill doesn’t make people become evil.

I was very pleased to find the books available in audio book form and especially once I found that the audio book featured a multi-cast as well as being narrated by the author himself. There are many characters in the book and the multi-cast helps to move the story along for the audio book with out the listener having to try to battle with trying to figure who is talking or thinking at the moment. The added bonus of having the author narrate the books helps to uncover intentions of the author himself.

This book may be a bit difficult to summarize because of the many events happening to close out this trilogy so I will touch a bit on the main events, but I will not give up the surprise ending.

Book two, “The Subtle Knife,” left the listener with a cliffhanger. Lyra’s mom, Marisa Coulter, captured Lyra and Will had just learned he had a task to help Lyra’s father, Lord Asriel. Before he goes to the battle of the worlds with Lord Asriel, Will insists on finding and rescuing Lyra. Mrs. Coulter has Lyra in a cave to protect her from the Magisterum, the church/government that rules in Lyra’s world. The Magisterum has sent out an assassin to kill Lyra before she can yeild to original sin.

Will has used his knife to escape an attack from the archangel Metatron. He is escorted by 2 angels one flies ahead to tell Lord Asriel of Will’s plan while the other stays behind to assist Will. Upon hearing the news, Lord Asriel dispatches a small army to the cave where Lyra is being forced drugs to stay sleeping so she will be undetected, to counteract the zeppelins from the Consistorial Court. He also sends two Gallivespian spies, the Chevalier Tialys and the Lady Salmakia, to protect Lyra. Gallivespians resemble humans, but are approximately four inches tall and they ride dragonflies.

During this time Will runs into Iorek Byrnison, the bear king of the armoured Panserbjørne, who are migrating south to avoid the Arctic melt caused by the effects of Lord Asriel’s bridge. Three forces — Will, Iorek, and Balthamos; Lord Asriel’s army; and the army of the Magisterium — converge on Mrs. Coulter’s cave, where Will is able to wake Lyra with a special powder that he sprays up her nostrils. He is cutting a window into another world when Mrs. Coulter turns and looks directly at him. For a moment, Will is reminded of his own mother; as a result, his concentration falters, and the knife shatters, having been unable to sever his affection. Because the window he has cut is open, Will, Lyra, and the Gallivespian spies manage to escape to another world.

Will and Lyra delay even further their trip to Lord Asriel’s by going to the world of the dead. Will and Lyra mean to keep promises to Will’s father and Lyra’s friend Roger. In the world of the dead Lyra must leave her Daemon on the shore and is separated from her daemon. They soon discover the dead must be released from the abyss and Will uses the Subtle Knife to cut an opening and release the ghosts into the world. Once in the world the ghosts are freed and their atoms are free to mix back into nature.

The major battle begins between Lord Asriel’s army and the army of Metatron. Ending with Lyra and Will reuniting with their daemons and Lyra’s parents sacrificing themselves to destroy Metatron.

While all this is going on Dr. Mary Malone has stepped through a window from her own world (assumed to be the readers’ world/Will’s world) into another window into a stranger world. There she meets elephantine creatures who call themselves Mulefa and use large seedpods attached to their feet as wheels. These creatures have a complex culture, intricate language, and an infectious laugh. Although from completely different worlds, Mary and the Mulefa establish a rapport which results in Mary’s acceptance into Mulefa community, where she learns that the trees from which the seedpods are gathered have gradually been going extinct for about 300 years. Mary uses the tree sap lacquer and accidentally constructs a telescope (the ‘amber spyglass’ of the title) that allows her to see the elementary particles known as Dust. Dust adheres to all life-forms that have attained a level of intelligence associated with building civilizations. She sees that Dust is flying away in large streams rather than falling on and nourishing the trees on which the Mulefa mutually depend.

After the battle Will and Lyra are reunited with Dr. Malone and soon learn their ultimate fate as well as the fate of all the worlds. Here is where I’ll stop because the end of the book is a bit of a surprise, but I will tell you it is a very beautiful to end this magical tale. Spread the word to all your friends, “This series is a fun romp through fantasy and mythology with a lesson to learn.”

Finally getting around to reading Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass (I hate to admit that it took

Finally getting around to reading Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass (I hate to admit that it took the movie ads to prod me into reading the book), I have been surprised by the depth of the story. Spoiler warning! From the very first chapter I have been pondering what dust might be, and I have just discovered that it is Pullman’s metaphor for original sin. In the chapter where this is finally revealed to the protagonist, Lyra, her father reads an explanatory passage from Genesis 3 (somewhat altered). Indeed, dust drives the plot of the story.

With apologies to the magisterium

Pullman’s treatment of the topic once again throws into relief a popular, but mistaken, concept. “Original sin” is simply not a biblical idea. Nowhere in either the Hebrew Bible or the Christian Scriptures does the text suggest that people are born with the taint of a physical liability passed on from the first human coupling, as Augustine hypothesized. In fact, the Bible hosts several potential explanations for the origins of human troubles. One solution that it never reaches is a genetic passing on of an original sin.

Tradition often makes Scripture into its own image. Ideas are inevitably read back into the story and a chimera of hazy concepts emerges. Pullman’s treatment of the human condition is to be applauded, and to his credit he does not attribute the concept of original sin directly to the Bible. Although he alters the text a bit he doesn’t add this most damaging concept to it. The belief that people are inherently defective has allowed for some of the worst crimes imaginable against our species. As a concept original sin is dust in the wind.

Coisas chatas
- Narrativa lenta e pouco empolgante nos dois primeiros terços do livro
- A protagonista é extremamente antipática no começo da história

by: Calvin Patimeteeporn

The Golden Compass and Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring both take on two versions of what we define as a “fantasy” world. One takes on the adaption of our pre-existing vision of a fantasy world set in a country filled with different races including elves, dwarves, and wizards. The other, however, takes on an adaption of our own world but, for the lack of a better term, “fantasized”. Compass introduces a world to the audience that is very similar to ours, even including some of the same countries, but allows some fantasy aspects to fall through, such as witches and talking polar bears. Fellowship introduces a world that we know to call “the fantasy dimension” with the typical elves and dwarves. Again, both are fantasy, but both display two different worlds.

However, plot-wise, they, and numerous other fantasy films, are extremely similar. Both heroes are, in their worlds, considered unimportant and meek (a hobbit and a little girl). However, its this emphasis on their unimportance that actually make them important. A recurring theme in both of these movies (and every single Disney movie ever in existence ever) is that even the most unlikely to be heroic character can be, well, heroic. Lyra ends up saving multiple universes and Frodo stops Sauron. Both unimaginable tasks completed by a midget and kid. But of course no hero’s journey is complete without the “supernatural aid” of others: Frodo has Gandalf, the old wizard, and Lyra has Iorek, the talking polar bear (Both Ian McKellen!). These characters are immensely powerful but do not actually play the role as the main hero, despite their advantage, but rather they support and guide the character through their epic. But even with this placed aside, the theme of unity is present in both movies. The fellowship of a mix of races and the motley crowd of witches and humans both provide a metaphor to the power of unity (cheesy, yes) and how it is able to accomplish, even the hardest of tasks.

These movies provide both a great amount of differences and similarities, but both are classified as the same genre. Both approach a different world and a different cast of characters, but plot similarities exist as demonstrated through both protagonists.

But all I want to know is when are a sage-like professor with a staff and a giant talking squirrel voiced by Ian McKellen going to come into my life and aid me through college.

If you follow my tweets/facebook/talk to me at all you’ll know I’ve been reading an uber amount of books recently so I decided that now I have a nice number of read books in my belt I could do a book review post without it being pointlessly short or annoyingly long. Sounds boring doesn’t it? Oh well, I’m bored and having a break between books and numerous people have been telling me to update this thing. So in future – be careful what you wish for! (NB: I had some formatting issues so the font size is all over the place but I cbb to fix it, so deal.)

One of the first series of books I read. Bought the second and third after having to read the first in school in year 8 – I was never much of a ‘reader’ before that (and to be honest not for a long time after either). For some reason I really got into these books though – I think it was because it was set in another universe (or multiple) but still felt realistic, as if it really could happen. From then on I was hooked on fantasy books and films and things that took me out of ‘the norm’. I loved it at the time but if I picked it up now after never having read it before I’m not too sure if I’d feel the same way. I do know that many adults do indeed enjoy the series (my Auntie was hooked and I went with her to see the film when it came out) but it is definately aimed at a younger audience.

The story follows a young girl, Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon, who leave home in search of their best friend who has been kidnapped. Along her travels through the trilogy she discovers her parents aren’t what they seem, she finds friends in creatures she never thought she’d see and then steps out of her universe and into a whole other world. There she befriends a boy named Will who has also stumbled out of his own universe and into that one. As the two travel through many other universes in search of answers about their estranged parents and the plans they’d had for them they unearth the biggest secret imaginable and are forced to walk through death, meet creatures from heaven and fight for their lives and the lives of everyone..in every universe.

I started this trilogy when I was going on holiday and needed a book to read. I can’t really remember why I chose Sabriel – I think it was because the cover looked groovy (hell yeah I judged a book by it’s cover – what you gonna do about it?). It combined my love for fantasy with magic, romance and destiny and I loved it. I couldn’t wait for the next two books to come out. Although they weren’t quite as good as the first and the final book was hella confusing I do still love it. I think even now I could happily go back and read it again. I wish they’d make a film out of these books, it would be great to watch.

Sabriel always knew she was different, she could step into death itself and once brought her friend’s rabbit back from the waters of the first gate of death – but when she starts seeing things she knows she shouldn’t be seeing at school she starts to worry for her fathers health – he was still on the other side of the wall in The Old Kingdom where magic still hung in the air and death was never far away. She sets off to discover the truth and travels over the wall to find her fathers home and hopefully some answers… but all she finds are more questions as she’s told she is the new Abhorsen and it is her duty to use the necromancy bells of the Abhorsen to send death back to where it came from. As she continues her search for answers she finds and falls in love with a man called Touchstone who was released from imprisonment as a decoration on the front of a boat. As he slowly remembers pieces of his past and how he had become imprisoned they’re faced with a great evil which threatens the safety of everyone in the Old Kingdom. Lirael also grew up knowing she was different, as an orphan child of the Clayr she should be having visions of the future but she was getting older and older and still hadn’t had a single vision. After leaving the glacier she called home in search of answers of her own she learns some hard truths about her own family and the fate of not only her own kingdom, but of those accross the wall too are placed in her hands.

I had never really got into the Harry Potter books, but I always loved the films – I’m a sucker for the magic plotline and special effects. I think I would have read the books a lot sooner if I hadn’t heard so many people saying the films were a let down from the books – I didn’t want my love of the films to be shattered by realising they weren’t what they should be. I finally folded after Order Of The Phoenix was released in the cinema, around the same time Deathly Hallows was being released as a book. Everyone was Harry Potter crazy and I was a bit jealous that they were getting more than me even though I loved the films and couldn’t wait for the next one… So as everyone was anticipating the release of Deathly Hallows I bought the first book…Think I got through all 7 in about 2 weeks – which for me at the time was REALLY fast. I think the last book wasn’t as good as the first 6 though, it seemed to drag a bit too much. That’s probably just my opinion though. I’m not including a synopsis for this one. Everyone who cares about it, already knows the jist of it. If you don’t know – you don’t deserve to.

This book I bought in the airport when I was going to Crete with Louise and wanted a book to read on the plane and by the pool to pass some time. Before I left I’d been in an ancient history type of mood and I’d recently watched Troy, Tristan and Isolde and King Arthur so I guess I just wanted something to feed my urge to know more about those sort of times. I’ve always appreciated those kind of times (even though they’re massively different eras they still all count as one in my opinion). Back in the day when wars were fought as man to man combat and surviving depended on pride, honour, skill and comrades…rather than if you were unlucky enough to step on a landmine. There are other books written by Simon Scarrow but I only really read it for something to do. I did enjoy it but it’s not my kind of book. I highly recommend it to those who like unbelievably graphic violence and wartime tactics (mixed with a bit of romance – but not too much)

He struggles with travelling over the desert, keeping his men alive as they fight against the elements…and enemies who attack at night on horses. Once they reach the enemy’s city they work their way through to those who remain loyal but while Cato falls in love they realise they’re trapped and starving.
This is the one I know you’ve all been waiting for! I admit I was skeptical of these books at first, I hadn’t even heard of them until the film came out – and even then I spent more time laughing at the fact Cedric Diggory was a vampire. However, the plot hit me right where it needed to, it screamed out at my love for fantasy, romance and my lifetime obsession with vampires (which very few people knew about until these books). I was hooked immediately and read all 4 within a week or so…then read them again…and again… I’ve read through them at least 4 times now, including Midnight Sun which is the partial draft of Twilight from Edwards perspective. I even managed to spread the love and got a LOT of people addicted to it like me. Now I can’t wait for New Moon to be released (even though I hate the book – it goes against my true love nature haha) and me and Elizabeth are doing everything we can to get to the premiere – let me know if you hear of any competitions/have any HMV purepoints I can have!

Moving from sunny, dry Arizona to cloudy, wet Forks is difficult for Bella and she’s not a happy rabbit. On her first day at school she notices a group who don’t seem to fit in and discovers they’re the adopted children of Dr Cullen. However when Bella is placed next to Edward Cullen in biology she is confused by his reaction to her – he seems utterly disgusted by her and storms out at the end of class and isn’t seen again for the rest of the week. Upon his return his personality confuses Bella even more as he goes from talking to her normally to snapping at her without any rational excuse. After Edward shows up in Port Angeles and rescues Bella from a gang of seriously unpleasant men Bella learns the truth about the Cullens – they’re vampires. The saga follows Bella as she falls in love with Edward but is left broken when he leaves her. Her best friend Jacob Black steps in to comfort her and Bella finds a way to feel close to Edward while he’s gone. However after confusion and a lot of misunderstanding Bella is reunited with her love but faced with confusion about where she really belongs and as danger sneaks up on her again and again Bella has to make the biggest decision of her life..and death.

I originally wasn’t going to read this book. I didn’t want to be sucked into the whole ’she wrote Twilight so I’ll read this’ scenario. However, I was really bored last week and looking for something to buy in HMV for some more points so I bought this and was pleasantly surprised! Even though a lot of people will have read it purely because it’s Stephenie Meyer I think it would still have been a best seller if she’d used a pseudonym. It still manages to call out to my fantasy based heart – even though I think I’d say it was more ’sci-fi’ than fantasy…but is there really that much of a difference? A totally fresh idea in my opinion and a completely new angle to look at alien invasion from!

Wanda is an alien. Mel is a human. The main problem is…they’re currently sharing a body. Usually when a soul enters a host’s body the consciousness of the host disappears but Wanda finds herself constantly hearing Mel’s thoughts and as Mel remembers those she loves and the time she’s spent with them Wanda finds herself loving them too. This leaves Wanda in a very difficult position – stay loyal to her species and report the ‘problem’ and look for a quick fix and a new host body… or run away in search of those she now loves? As Wanda becomes more and more human she’s faced with the problem of still loving Mel’s Jared as she herself falls in love with another man – a human man. Wanda then has a very important decision to make: what means the most to her, her own life… or the life of the human host who never stopped fighting and she has learned to love along with Mel’s family?

I started this series because I was still in a vampire mood and was in search of a vampire romance book that had numerous books in the series and I wouldn’t get through too quickly and be left wanting more. This seemed to fit the bill perfectly. It took me a couple of chapters to get into it, it’s only flaw is the writing style used that can get kind of annoying at times. However it uses both classic and original ideas of vampires and mixes them together perfectly to form an amazing idea that really appeals to my ‘I wish I was like that’ nature. The picture I used is of the 4th book – Untamed as I couldn’t find a photo of them all and Untamed is the purple one haha.

When Zoey is marked as a vampyre fledgling she thinks her world is over. Vampyres are seen as freaks and she doesn’t want to lose who she is and become all emo and covered in eyeliner. After she returns home from being marked at school and her mother and step-loser fail to understand or care she runs away to her grandmother’s house who has always been on her side in arguments against her mother. However in her search for her grandmother the change into a vampyre becomes too much for Zoey and she collapses and hits her head – hard. While she is unconscious she meets the goddess of the night – Nyx who is the goddess of the vampyres and Nyx explains to Zoey that not all darkness means evil and not all light means good. Zoey wakes up at the House of Night – otherwise known as vampyre finishing school and is questioned as to why her fledgling mark has been filled and she has the tattoos of a fully grown vampyre after only being marked hours earlier. Zoey soon learns that her tattoos aren’t the only thing different about her (she’s a freak among freaks) and soon realises she has the gift of an affinity from Nyx and over time uses her connection to Nyx through her instincts to work out that there’s something not quite right at the House of Night. As Zoey tackles average teenage problems such as bitchy popular girls, a vampyre boyfriend, her human exboyfriend, and the interest of one of the young professors at the school she also realises she must tackle not so average teenage problems such as the undead, prophecies, murder, demons, fallen angels and of course, even more boy troubles!

Synopsis:

When six year old Jordan McKay dreams, he dreams big. Sitting in the park one day eating a popsicle, Jordan is suddenly launched into the future he had been manifesting in his mind. Finding himself lost and alone, he is shocked that he’d finally dreamed hard enough to make it come true. Found on the other side by a woman, she works to help bring him home, touching his soul in a way he will never forget. After dreaming himself back he learns to control this new talent, never forgetting what the woman had done for him and vowing to return the favor, even if it meant sacrificing his own life to do so.

Now bound to Jordan by fate, Kenzie Ashcroft finds her life riddled with bad dreams. Every night when Kenzie falls asleep she wakes up to a parallel life where things are not only opposite, but are eerily real. Struggling to keep the two worlds straight she grows up wondering how this happened to her and why, wondering who the shadow of a man growing up beside her really is.

Thinking life is wonderful, Jordan begins changing Kenzie’s fate, giving her everything she ever wanted and making her the woman he always thought she was meant to be. As he delves deeper into his web of time and space, however, fate sends him a curve ball and he finds that he is not alone. Followed by a girl with turquoise eyes and skin cold as death he struggles to learn who she is, what she does, and why she is here. As he gets to know this strange girl in the hopes of learning more about himself, Jordan finds that what he thought was the right thing was not in the end. In a desperate attempt to take back the wrongs he thought were right, Jordan takes the leap to trust the strange girl. It is then that Jordan’s world begins to fall apart, or does it?

Parallel begs to challenge the notion of luck and the idea that no matter what you do to force change, you cannot hope to change fate.
