Happy Sunday everyone, we hope you’re out enjoying this fine day of rest. Though we’re not exactly religious, Sunday’s are still sacred in New Modernity as a day to dress in your finest clothes (summer whites anyone?), pack a picnic, and go for a stroll in the park. You can row boats, play croquet, visit a museum, head to the beach, plant in your garden, read a good book, or cook an especially extravagant meal.

One Sunday tradition that we miss most, having recently moved to New York from San Francisco, is visiting the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park. Built in 1878 (the oldest wooden conservatory in the country!), this historical landmark was originally meant to be located on the San Jose estate of an eccentric business man, but when he died before he could hire a construction team, a few prominent San Franciscans purchased the materials and had it built in Golden Gate Park as a gift to the city (delightful).

The Victorian structure, along with all of Golden Gate Park, was conceptualized in the late 19th century when city dwellers were first becoming modern day urbanites. They longed for a connection to nature even as the excitement of new skyscrapers filled the air downtown. Conservatories were actually quite hip at the time, with plant sciences becoming all the rage, earning them the nickname “theaters of nature.” Unfortunately, as time went on, large earthquakes and fires damaged not only the Conservatory, but all of San Francisco, leaving the structure rather depreciated. In 1998, the Conservatory was placed on the 100 Most Endangered World Monuments list by the World Monuments Fund, sparking an extensive $25 million dollar restoration process that lasted until 2003.

With every penny well spent, the Conservatory now contains more than 1,700 plant species, including the largest and most comprehensive public collection of high-altitude orchids (more than 700 of the 1,000 known species) in the world, along with special changing exhibitions, like “Plantosaurus Rex” (which featured ancient plant species, and a huge t-rex busting through the roof), and “The Butter Fly Zone,” which showcased dozens of butterflies in over 25 varieties flying about inside.

Not a bad way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

The folks who book artists for Outside Lands were probably really excited about nabbing Paul McCartney. That’s cool and everything, but we would consider sacrificing our first born to see Hall and Oates. The rest of the lineup is really good too. But, seriously guys: Hall and fucking Oates.

Birthdays – I love them.

Other people’s, not mine.

I love going to celebrate another year on the planet and bringing a gift or pie or a hug and some kind words but mostly when it’s someone else. When it comes to my own birthday, I’ve never been a big fan.

There was a time not too long ago where I would literally turn my phone off and spend the day in bed, avoiding all calls except the ones from my family. I never felt like I did anything to deserve the attention that our culture focuses on a person celebrating another year on the planet. My parents fucked, got pregnant, and my mother gave birth to me all completely arbitrarily and beyond my say-so. Even though I was planned, the day I came out wasn’t planned. I’m not tripping on getting older, I just don’t like tons of attention and the idea of throwing myself a party so that I can celebrate an “achievement” that I had nothing to do with has always felt strange to me.

I ain’t hating on anyone who makes a big deal out of their birthday – it’s your day, go sick, make as big a deal out of it as you want, though I will say - people who want to celebrate a “birthday week” usually have a personality disorder. Why not make it your “birthday month” or fuck it, your “birthday year?” All the attention makes me uncomfortable and yet I want to enjoy it as much as everyone else seems to.

I have grown better about it the past couple of years, as I’ve realized that there is one advantage to having a birthday party. I love my friends and family and I love getting them all together over a bunch of food. My birthday is the one time of year I really get the juice to get a bunch of people who I want to see in the same place at the same time. I don’t ask much of people’s presence (though I get lots of time with friends throughout the year) but I also love watching people I care about make friends amongst themselves, and the asking of friends to show up is always made easy by my birthday.

Last year, I had a cookout in the neighborhood park where I grew up back east and a good fifty people – some of who I hadn’t seen in YEARS – showed up, broke bread and got lots of hugs. The year before, a good fifteen of us completely destroyed bags of crawfish and shrimp and noodles at Red Crawfish and had a blast.

This year, all I want is another cookout. Nothing fancy, no gifts necessary – just homies and their kids and food. The only problem is, for the first time in my recollection of living in San Francisco… my birthday coincides with the annual shitshow that is Bay To Breakers. Half a million drunk yahoos completely trashing every neighborhood that they “run” through means there’s no available permits for picnics in Golden Gate Park and that most of the city is going to be involved in something else, and I don’t want to compete or deal with that madness. Hell, I’d like to be out of town if at all possible.

Which leaves Saturday.

I’ve got a month, and I’ve made some calls to the Parks Department. Everything will work out the way it’s supposed to…

… as long as people show up.

Thankfully, I’m not worried about that.

Outside Lands has come along way from the time the area received its nickname. 130 years ago, Outside Lands was an uninhabitable and inaccessible patch of sand dunes. Today, the beautiful state park is host to one of the West Coast’s largest music festivals, held annually in San Francisco.

As announced today (April 16), the 2013 Outside Lands headliners will include Paul McCartney, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nine Inch Nails and Phoenix. It’s worth pointing out that all the headliners have performed at or been announced as headliners at upcoming summer music festivals, with the Chili Peppers and Phoenix having headlined Coachella, NIN at Lollapalooza and Made in America, and Macca at Bonnaroo.

Joining the headliners will be an eclectic group of alternative, electronic and rock acts including the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vampire Weekend, D’Angelo, Hall & Oates, Willie Nelson, Kaskade, The National, Jurassic 5 and Matt & Kim performing on multiple outdoor stages.

San Francisco’s Outside Lands festival has released its 2013 lineup, a stacked one will feature Paul McCartney, Red Hot Chili Peppers, a reunited Nine Inch Nails, The National and Phoenix. Other artists include Vampire Weekend, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, D’Angelo, Grizzly Bear, Yeasayer and The Head and The Heart.

The festival is set to take place at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park from Aug. 9-11. Tickets will go on sale here on April 18 at noon PDT. A press release states a portion of the ticket proceeds will go toward San Francisco’s Recreation and Park Department.
